I haven't been this excited since Geraldo opened up Capone's vault.

The NBA sucks. No defense, and the talent has outstripped the rules of the game, like moving the fences in to 200 feet in baseball. Narrow the rim by 2 inches, raise the basket to 12 feet, and actually call offensive fouls, and maybe I wouldn't prefer watching. Lawrence Welk.
Oh, and also ban tattoos.

I don't fully get the hype. I hate basketball, but i think i am unbiased in this case. He is the best player in the league, or so I am told. He is hyped. He is packaged and sold. He is the greatest since Jordan.
But where are his championships? Didn't Jordan actually, you know, win stuff?
Meanwhile you have Kobe Bryant who has won 5 championships.
Both men came into the league from highschool(i think), not were hyped, one delivered, yet the one who delivers gets the short shrift in comparison to the one who doesn't

Cleveland is a dying city looking to keep its cash cow. O'bumblefuck had no business flying to Copenhagen for something so trivial. IIRC he hadn't even met with McChrystal by that point in time. Yet he had time to jetset to Denmark in the hopes of landing some contracts for his thug union bosses in Chitown.

LeBron is exactly at the same point where Jordan won his first title (7th season). I think the more apt comparison is Kevin Garnett: another great player straight out of high school, and classily not bitching about his team's utter failure to get him any solid supporting cast. James saw the writing on the wall and did not want to chance the Cavs not getting him a Pippen or Shaq to help him. (Heh, Shaq himself actually did try to help him, but '09 Shaq < '00 Shaq.)
Posted by: logprof at July 08, 2010 05:46 PM (BP6Z1)
Lebron would be a fool if he were to go to Knicks or the Nets, as he will pay much more in taxes and probably be on a much worse team than Cleveland.
I'm not sure the Heat are going to have enough even if they do land James, as they will have to trade Beasley to make room.
Posted by: Matt X at July 08, 2010 05:47 PM (UmqUc)
Maybe Lebron is a right winger. He is going to Florida because there is no state income tax. That should save him 10+ million
They should use this example in math class, or economics perhaps. But maybe they don't teach that in schools anymore.

I can imagine a team like that doing well in the regular season but falling apart in the playoffs. And an injury to any of the stars becomes devastating. Winning will depend on finding the overlooked, undervalued player they can pay the minimum.
It's a very extreme strategy. Might work.
All that said, the whole special is an extreme dick move by LeBron to the fans of Cleveland. Just unnecessarily cruel.

Rapist proclivities aside, Kobe came into the league with as sleazy a move as Bron-bron just pulled. Kobe - a kid out of high school - announced that he would only play for the Knicks or Lakers. That was it. He got drafted by Charlotte and refused to play for them.
If the NBA had had any balls, it would simply have said "Fine, you don't play. Ever. Bye."

C -- ummm, some stiff making minimum NBA salary
PF -- Chris Bosh
SF -- LeBron James
SG -- Dwyane Wade
PG -- Mario Chalmers
Bench #1 -- Michael Beasley, unless he's traded for parts
Bench #2-4 -- three rookies drafted in the 2nd round
Bench #5-11 -- six old guys making the minimum, trying to gravy-train a ring
You can win a title with three stars and role players, but only if those role-players aren't minimum-salary stiffs. This will be the softest interior team in the league by a longshot unless something drastic happens to their roster. If Vegas puts their win total above 62 (the computer geeks predict 66 wins), I'll go all-in on the under.

I'll gladly be a Knight in King Jame's Court.
You jealous teabaggers should go set yourselves on your fire. LOL

Lebron, sundown, you better take care, if I find you've been creeping around my backstairs.
I'm not bitter though.

Aww. I read this from earlier:
Maybe Lebron is a right winger.
and wanted to pretend he was going to play RW for one of the NHL teams down there. I'm guessing the Panthers if he said Miami, although the Lightning is the team that has already won a Cup...much to the chagrin of this Sabres fan. (Seriously, how fair is that? Tampa Freaking Bay beats us to a Super Bowl win AND a Cup win? Utter excrement, I say. And on that note
but... what's his favorite hockey team? Who does he root for to put the biscuit in the basket?
I'd say given the Cowboys, Lakers and Yankees, he'd be cheering for either the Canadiens (most titles, also very obnoxious road fans) or the Red Wings (second most titles, closest thing to a generic USA-based perennial winner the NHL has right now).
And on topic, I concur with how cruel this was to Cleveland fans. Even if the NBA isn't the best sport out there it was still something the fans had going for them given the not-Browns and the Indians.

Lebron hates George Dubya. When asked who he would like to dunk on if it could be anybody, he said Bush, and he said he would like to shatter the board in the process.
Do the "tea partiers" have this much "hate" for Bush? The Ron Paul-Glenn Beck faction, maybe?

Ohio also went to GW. Twice. I did not vote for Obamessiah. As a native Ohioan, I'm sickened by the fact we're stuck with assholes like Kucinich, Strickland, Sutton, and Brown. I'm in a Dem stronghold of NE Ohio, and these stupid fucking Dem/union clowns keep inflicting the same shit on us, election after election.
As for LeBron James:
Anyone who followed the controversy over LeBron James realized two things: Even with him on the team, the Cavaliers possessed neither the ability nor the heart to get to a championship and win. Secondly, as soon as he got an offer he wouldnÂ’t refuse, heÂ’d be gone.
Now that both situations have come true, thereÂ’s a lot of anger among Cleveland fans. IÂ’m a football fan myself, having been a faithful follower of the Cleveland Browns for 46 years. Basketball is not my favorite sport. ItÂ’s the principle. What transpired was craven behavior on the part of a beloved athlete.
ItÂ’s not just what James did, itÂ’s how. He conducted a three-ring media circus with himself as the main attraction. He disrespected Cleveland on national T.V. and did not have the courage or conviction to face the fans or the owner, Dan Gilbert. He was not straightforward. He chose instead to broadcast his message from the comfort of an ESPN studio. Then he fled down to Miami where Pat Riley met him at the airport and whisked him away to a hotel. Nice touch, LeBron.
We all realize that sports is a “business”, but the trouble is, fans and local business owners also have a financial stake in their team, and they get shafted the worst. Vendors, restaurants, pubs, and parking lots, take a big hit when a star player or a team leaves town. The whole industry surrounding a sports team has an investment in the business and the effects are economically devastating.
Gilbert is right about James quitting. I watched those playoff games with the Celtics. He played like shit. You could tell his mind, heart, and body simply werenÂ’t in the game. Much of the blame rests on him. Having said that, one player does not a team make. You need a supporting cast to assist and step up when you falter.
As for his new team, the Miami Heat: He took his unfinished business to a team that has only won a single championship, back in the 2005-2006 season. The lure was the signing of Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, who will be his teammates. A warning to Miami: We Cleveland fans know all about hyperbole and the high hopes attached to newly acquired athletes. Tim Couch comes to mind. WeÂ’re also painfully aware of getting this close to a championship, only to watch in total disbelief as the chance slipped away with one fatuous mistake on the part of a coach or player. This is not the first time a well-liked player (or team owner) has abandoned our town. Unfortunately, weÂ’re old hands at this. Even after all that, we still believe that if you give loyalty, appreciation, and support to a team, youÂ’re supposed to receive it in return.
As for the Cavaliers and our other Cleveland sports teams, maybe this will serve as a catalyst for the determination to fill our teams with the athletes who will bring us our long overdue championships.
Lebron James has moved to Miami, taking his ego and self-promotion with him.
Good luck Miami; youÂ’ll need it.
