Leon Panetta: Al Qaeda Will Attack the US Soon
— Maetenloch

Spook86 from In From the Cold caught this admission from CIA Director Panetta during Congressional testimony on Tuesday. According to Panetta another attack on the US from Al Qaeda is expected within the next 3 to 6 months.

Now if anyone would know about upcoming attacks it ought to be him so I assume he has enough details that point to an imminent attack to make him willing to predict one publicly. But the cynical side of me also suspects that he's just covering himself in case something does happen since there's less political downside to a false alarm than no alarm whatsoever.

Mr. Panetta offered that chilling prediction today, during Congressional testimony that also included FBI Director Robert Mueller and Director of National Intelligence Dennis Blair. The CIA chief said the terror group is utilizing new recruits who are more difficult to detect and trace

and
British intelligence officials believe the Nigerian was part of a larger group of terrorists that trained in Al Qaida camps in Yemen last year. The whereabouts of those operatives remains unknown. Extended questioning of Abdulmutallab by trained interrogators might have yielded actionable intelligence on those trainees and their operational assignments.

Also unclear is the status of 36 American ex-convicts who traveled to Yemen over the past year, ostensibly to study Arabic. Thomas Joscelyn of The Weekly Standard has unearthed a little-publicized report from the Senate Foreign Relations Committee (released last month) that raises concerns about the former convicts and a second group of Americans, who moved to Yemen several years ago and converted to a form of radical Islam.

So if we know that Al Qaeda is planning attacks using non-typical recruits that have been trained in Yemen, you'd think the government would have pulled out the stops Jack Bauer-style to get info out of the only such terrorist they had in custody. But instead they decided to Mirandize the crotch bomber after just 50 minutes.

If I were the Obama administration, I'd be very, very worried that Panetta's prediction will come true. Because if Al Quaeda does pull off a successful attack their actions would rightfully be considered malignant incompetence.

Never let a crisis go to waste.  I don't put it past this Administration to be hoping for a major attack.

Ther can be no doubt that Al Qaida wants nothing more that to bring us to our knees. Judging by this administrations' effete actions concerning the recent attacks, and towards terrorism in general, I don't have much faith that we'll escape the next one.

And yeah, that would be a great excuse to impose martial law. Not for any real reason, we certainly didn't overreact after 9-11. But for the bunch of clowns in Washington, they's get wood from having that kind of power.

This topic came up yesterday.  ALL of the secuity bosses have been doing this since 9-11. It is a two-fer. First it is a cover-your-ass moment so if something does happen you can come back with a "told-you so".  It also is a justification that your shop needs more personnel and a larger budget.

That last part is the gold standard for every damn buearocrap in DC.

29 Techie, I don't think it's 'truther' territory to observe that this administration has put far more energy into giving jihadis (illegitimate) rights rather than protecting us.  Obama isn't personally handing them a nuke to use against us, but if you look at the empty rhetoric towards Iran, and the lack of serious interrogations, it's clear that this administration is doing evertything in their power to 'let it happen,' however fluffy their motivations.

That said, martial law won't work because no one trusts them enough to go along with it.  Some of the stupider urban centers, maybe.

Panetta is doing his job as he sees it.  He has done the press conference, sent the emails, done the rounds on TV and radio, and moved the papers around on his desk.  After the attack happens, he will do more press conferences, send more emails, do the rounds on TV and radio, and move some more papers around on his desk.

I really don't think he sees the connection between his job title, and what he's supposed to be doing to protect me and my kids.

They were caught off guard by the underwear bomber (to say nothing of the Fort Hood situation) and the incident and its subsequent handling made them look unprepared, weak, and foolish. They know this is their soft underbelly.

The cynical side of me says they are trying to get out in front of this so when something does happen, instead of it being a "How did you incompetents let this happen? This administration is weak on terrorism!" moment; it becomes a "We all knew this was coming and warned the American people, we are all in this together." moment.

Whether that will fly, I don't know.

We need an adminitration that is serious about eliminating terrorism by any means. A tough stance does many things, all of which work in our favor.

It shows strength to our enemies, which is what they respect. If we show a greater determination, they just might decide against attacking us, because we could inflict far more damage on them than they could on us.

The form this should take might make the more effete in Washington squirm. It involves the swift and sure execution of any terrorist who takes any action against us. A short tribunal followed by an execution. No bones, no regrets, no apologies to anyone, just the attitude that the poor dead terrorist did it to himself, and would still be alive to pursue a productive life with his family at home had he so chosen.

It'd make would-be jihadis wonder if it's really worth it, instilling in them a sense of futility. We just need a government with cojones. We can defeat these rabid animals, but not the way we're currently doing it.

And... while in crazy mode, if we know for sure there is going to be an attack, and we don't stop it, does that mean we are culpable, ie, the US government is behind it, just like all the 9/11 Truthers say the US government is behind that event? 84 unknown jane @65:
This could be ass covering, but something gives me a (bad) funny feeling it isn't.  If something bad does happen (and pray that is doesn't, or that we can thwart it) then I'm all for the majority of Americans to just go apeshit.  It's about time we quit trying to play nice with this crap; let's throw out the rule book and play this game old school.

Everytime I hear conservatives, justifiably heartened after the Massachusetts Miracle, talk about how this bodes so well for the November elections, I just have that weird "cognitive dissonance" feeling, like, "you're kidding me, right?" As if there's going to BE an election in November? Like America as we have known it is actually going to hold together for another nine months?

My gut has been telling me for a long time that there ain't gonna be no elections in November. Either total economic collapse with the consequent social collapse; or, exactly what others on this thread have described (and what I think is the likeliest scenario):  terrorist attack with massive casualties--and immediate declaration of national state of emergency, and imposition of martial law.

The power-mad sickos the idiot voters elected in 2008 would take on the mantle of total dictatorship quite readily, I imagine.

I'm with you and others here re: the Second Amendment. But even if the military refuses to take up arms against us (and I don't think that's a safe assumption), we're still up against Obama's ACORN/SEIU armies. We're talking about people who beat up old black guys in wheelchairs, threaten women with gang rape, knock people down, punch people out--and their Beloved Leader of Memory, Saul Alinsky, "studied" under Al Capone's hit man in Chicago in the 1930s.

But I do wonder whether our men and women in uniform won't follow orders from their Commander in Chief....
General Fuckwad Casey, chief of the army, carrying on about how the killing of 14 people at Ft. Hood would be even MORE tragic if it were to make us sacrifice our allfuckingimportant "diversity".... as well as all the people at Walter Reed who dared not utter a peep against Hasan for fear of being nailed by the political correctness police....does not give me a lot of hope that the military would actually refuse to follow the Obamafuehrer's orders.

So how will the Second Amendment help us, folks? If our military goes along with martial law, we're outgunned. Period.

If someone has a rosier prognosis, please share it! As blue as I am about all this, I'd genuinely appreciate some reason for optimism.
