He was suffering from pneumonia.
His nephew Doug Nielson, told CJOB that Leslie had been in the hospital in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida for 12 days and that with family and friends by his side at 5:30pm Sunday “he just fell asleep and passed away.”
What a great guy. I've heard several people say that he was a great guy in person as well, very nice. His work in later years in the comedies was so fantastic that it nearly overshadowed his prior excellent work as a dramatic actor. I think I laughed more and harder watching his movies than any others. He will be missed.

But in his case, how he was able to get you to not only laugh but laugh out loud, that it gets past the guard and hits home.

Even though there are some lefty comedians that make me puke, I'll still go with humor as the best single measurement of smarts/wisdom out there.
Very sad.

Just a good guy who happened to be an actor with a phenomenal range, good as a "straight" leading man, even better in comedy roles.
There are too few Leslie Neilsons out there. RIP.

He was very funny in real life too. He went around a lot of the time with a fart machine, playing pranks on people.
One time I saw him on a talk show talking about his dramatic career and the success of his comedic career. With all seriousness, he said, to paraphrase, "This is how I would deliver a line in a drama: [and he delivers a short line]; and this is how I would deliver a line in a comedy [same exact line, same exact delivery!]." Gawd, that was funny.

What's remarkable is that even when "old," he was able to do humor that was just plain hilarious; not simply "funny for an old guy."
Yeah, Paris, he continued to be a leading man in comedies. At that age. Amazing.

Cemetary? What is it?
It's a big field with graves (and now one of them holds a very talented man), but that's not important right now.
Forbidden Planet, Airplane, Naked Gun-RIP you beautiful diamond.

Funny thing about Nielsen is that you can watch one of his old movies and make it funny by thinking it's a comedy. That way, it feels like he's always on the verge of a hilarious gag. I start laughing sometimes. Last time I watched Forbidden Planet, it was hilarious when I would hold that thought in my head.
I saw an actress say that he had ruined his prior work because of those comedies--that you couldn't watch him now without laughing. She felt like he shouldn't have done them. I disagree. It's only when I want to see him as funny in a dramatic role that he becomes funny.
I think all of this is a testament to how skilled an actor he was.

I actually think movies are an endangered species. In the future, everything will either be movies for tv, or tv series.
