Liberals Never Learn...An Infinite Series
— DrewM

recovery.jpg

The most amazing thing about member of the self-proclaimed "reality based community" is just how divorced from reality they are.

Now that it's clear to just about everyone that Obama's economic promises ("predictions" for the hacks at Politifact) are unfulfilled and all the money he and the Democrats have spent over the last year and a half was wasted, liberal bloggers know what the answer is...more of the same!

Behold Greg Sargent (more on him here) of the Washington Post

The sputtering recovery is actually making it tougher politically over time for Dems to take new steps to solve the problem. The sluggish recovery has undermined public confidence in the Dems' general approach to solving the problem, making Dems more reluctant to attempt the next round of ambitious solutions. That, in turn, insures that the jobs numbers remain grim. And so on.

...What makes this even worse is the perverse dynamic I noted above. Republicans have pursued a very deliberate strategy to feed public pessimism about Big Government's ability to lift us out of the doldrums, pointing to the sputtering recovery as proof that the Dems underlying philosophy has been discredited.

The result is that it's even less likely that Dems will risk taking "another bite at this apple," as Josh puts it. The public doesn't focus on the details, and the failure to pass an ambitious enough stimulus has ensured that the Dem solution fell short of expectations, which paradoxically has left the public increasingly pessimistic about government spending as the best means to fuel the recovery. That in turn led Dems to conclude that further ambitious government action is politically unfeasible.

Yes, it's so gosh darn unfair that people are holding Democrats accountable for their failures! Of course if the mean Republicans would stop pointing out what a disaster the Obama/Democratic economic record is, people would let them keep spending and then we'd be in AWESOME shape!

The talking point that Republicans are simply the party of No is propaganda sprayed by the left like manure in the hopes something will grow from it. They offered up proposals at the time that would have stimulated the economy far better than the ever predictable Democratic call for more spending did. All they heard in return was, "I won". Yep you did, now you own it.

There's absolutely no reason Republicans shouldn't vote against programs they don't think will help the economy and point out to voters how those policies have actually hurt the economy.

"Reality based liberals" are immune to the real world consequences of their preferred policies (in more ways than one). They are like children who stick their fingers in their ears and shout so they don't have to hear bad news and can keep demanding more of the same.

I'm not going to defend the GOP's record during the Bush administration when it comes to spending. Let's just say it's not what a conservative would have wanted and leave it at that. At least now they are saying they have learned their lesson and will do a better a job when they get a chance.

Do I believe the Republicans have truly embraced fiscal discipline? Of course not. I am at least heartened that the GOP is acknowledging past mistakes. I have my doubts about how true their promises are but only time will tell. I'd rather keep a weary but hopeful eye on them than turn the idiot liberals loose on the economy any day of the week.

Hell, its not just the bloggers, the bloggers are just repeating what the politicians are saying.

....that would have stimulated the economy far better than the ever predictable Democratic call for more spending did.

One of the main problems besides the fact that you can't spend your way out of a recession, was the fact that they spent, and are spending, the money on the wrong damn things.

A very large portion of the money is going into the typical wish list of liberals socialists for more socialist programs that benefit few and only grow the government at the expense of private industry.

If you don't grown private industry you NEVER get out of the recession. That is what happened with FDR and why a recession became the "great depression".

Sadly the communists in charge now believe the propaganda of the communists from the 40s and the 50s regarding Saint Roosevelt.  Except for one thing; he did spend more money on capital projects.

Once again, we (meaning us conservatives) are ahead of the curve, and so far in front of the Dims that they can't see our tail lights.

We do know exactly what needs to be done: we need real tax and regulatory relief, not empty rhetoric. We need real action in bringing down the debt, not bringing down the country. It's the private sector (from which all tax money flows) that needs a boost, not Washington lackeys.

Wanna see some real stimulus? Cut the corporate tax rates and roll back all regulation to around 1980 levels. Repeal the CRA along with this new banking bill. Throttle the EPA. Starve the regulatory beast and we'll see the private sector rebound.

Obamanomics isn't working by any metric or standard. They're just too stoopid to see it.

37 Lemon Kitten@17,

That's one of the most damning things I've read. Ever. If only it could be put on a bumper sticker.

And that's no anecdote. It's an every employee sample of the working class with real numbers put to paper. Multiply that out by many tens of millions of times. If you mention Tax Freedom Day as the shortcut, everyone gets upset for a moment and thinks, "Well, what are you going to do?" If you read that spelled out business example, you start saying, "Damnit, I'm going to do something!"

Hello, GOP, if you're really going to become responsible and not Statist-Lite, you might want to start advertising examples like that to the public to make people realize just how much they're getting ripped off by government and how employers, their employers, are getting ripped off too on their behalf.

45 This is the basic problem with governing from what you might call a "woulda, coulda, shoulda" ideology. Democrats would rather reinforce failure than admit that their whole approach is wrong. It's a pattern with them going back for decades: their ideas are not wrong, they aver; it's simply the implementation that failed. If only this knob is tweaked a bit more, if that lever is pulled, then all will come right and the essential soundness of their social engineering made plain to all. It's nonsense, of course, but Democrats have so deeply invested themselves in this make-believe world of "social justice" and equal-outcomes that admitting failure at this point is unthinkable. It's gone past any real question of policy or social impact; it's about self-image and an ideology so deeply held it's more a religious belief than a political philosophy. I'm not sure that the Tea Party movement can reinvigorate the moribund GOP establisment enough to offer a compelling alternative, though. "We're less bad than Democrats!" isn't exactly a compelling call to arms. The "entitlement mentality" is deeply entrenched in America now, and any attempt to reverse it is going to require politicians with guts and brains both -- qualities sadly lacking in our candidates for a good long while.

Because my company has been conscripted by the government and forced to serve as a tax collector, we have lost control of a big chunk of our cost structure. Tax increases, whether cloaked as changes in unemployment or disability insurance, Medicare increases or in any other form can dramatically alter our financial situation. With government spending and deficits growing as fast as they have been, you know that more tax increases are coming—for my company, and even for Sally too.

Companies have also been pressed into serving as providers of health insurance. In a saner world, health insurance would be something that individuals buy for themselves and their families, just as they do with auto insurance. Now, adding to the insanity, there is ObamaCare."

Send it to all the Gaia-botherers you know.

Because Greenies' plan is not for millions of additional illegal inhabitants to achieve a higher standard of living, it's to collapse the U.S. social and economic systems and bring the average American standard of living (and associated carbon output) in line with that of third-world countries.

The president joked that "when you're in a car and you want to go forward, you put it in 'D.' " If you want to go backward, "you put it in 'R.' "

When your intended audience is the same one that bought "if the glove don't fit, ya gots to acquit" because it just sounded so right, this kind of kindergarten-level propaganda can be highly effective.

74 The entire globe would exist in a perfect utopia How many tens of millions in the 20th century were murdered on that bloody altar of the "perfect utopia"? "Perfect utopia" to one is a "perfect nightmare" to another (look at the misery the Norks live in). One thing I've noticed as I've grown older is that liberals really cannot answer the "And then what?" question. They know little about the past and think little of the future; they live only in the present, and think of their own petty issues and desires as eternal verities. They are children, in short, with all the temporary passions and limited horizons of children. I'm often struck by how the liberal definition of happiness is not freedom to achieve, but rather freedom from discomfort. A liberal views a citizen rather as we would a newborn baby: if your didie isn't wet or beshitted, and you've had your morning feeding, what do you have to bitch about? Achievement discomfits liberals because it reminds them that there always will be winners and losers in the great game of life -- it's a property of reality.

More to the point: which do you think most people would rather do, go back to the economic situation of 2006 (just before the D took over Congress) or forward to the Obama/Pelosi/Reid policies in overdrive?

That disgraced Yosi Sargent (or spelled Sergant sometimes) from leaked NEA tape, has nothing to do with this Greg Sargent, is there?

79 What I can not stand is the constant desire for some people to want to control other people. I understand the theory put forth by Bastiat that human nature makes people want to take the easy way out and let other people "provide for them" but this is not the only thing the liberals want.

Not only do they want their daily bread provided by some endless source, but they also want to regulate the shit out of everything.

I can't help but go back to that old definition/saying that they are scared that somewhere out there someone is having a good time and they just can not stand that.

I mean, how else could they accuse people of being evil just because they want to leave you alone and want to be left alone?

Re: the link from Lemon Kitten @17 -

The simple solution for a lot of employers is to hire illegal aliens. None of the regulatory burden they get when hiring a citizen, and if business drops off and they need to reduce expenses, they can lay off the illegals without jumping through all the EEOC hoops and having their unemployment insurance premiums skyrocket.

It's almost like it was planned that way.

These people are not liberals; they are socialists, communists even, perhaps even fascists.  Time to start calling them for what they really are.

I've had enough of their debasement of language.

Vic,

This desire to control other people is indeed frustrating, but what really makes me crazy is that it isn't enough to control you. It's their incessant and unending moral preening and assumed superiority, projection, and hypocrisy.

If someone wants to tell us they feel that a group of elites should run and control pretty much all the levers of the country and make no bones about it, we can disagree and have a debate. But when they call us an evil racists or (non AoS) morons for having the temerity to have another philosophy, well...where do you go?

@Monty: "They are children, in short, with all the temporary passions and limited horizons of children."

The Khmer Rouge was essentially the equivalent of the Bloods running the country, without any of the attendant Git Rich or Die Tryin' mentality.  Just the Die Tryin' part.

We are at 10% unemployment by the U3 statistic, which drops people from the data set after they have been unemployed for too long. The U6 rate, which counts the long-term unemployed, is stuck around around 17%:

Uh, I hate to keep repeating this but it is true.

2006 was tha last republican budget. Unemployment was 4.6 and the deficit was 167 billion. Then Democrats took majorities and the budget writing. They made unemployment start to rise in 2007. In 2008 they doubled the budget. In 2009 Bush never even SAW the budget because democrats were afraid of the voters seeing it and did not vote on it until after the election (Just like this year!)

Now we find ourselves in the last half of the fourth year of democrat control of the budget and the deficit os more than 10 times the last republican budget and real unemployment is 18%.

The democrats did not inherit this economy: they built it all by themselves.

And dont' forget the Cummunity ReInvestment Act that caused the housing bubble and crashed the economy.

After the largest government spending spree in history, and the failure of this spending to substantially aid in the economy's recovery, it seems liberals/socialists now are saying "if only we could spend more money then everything would work out as we had hoped..."  When I hear this argument I imagine going to a liberal for advise on how to get rid of a headache, and they say the best way to do it is to put your head under water.  (So, you try it - hey, it must work, Keynes and Paul Krugman said so...  Just as you are about to pass out, you pull your head up, gasping for air - your head now pounding, and the liberal explains to you that the only problem is that you didn't stay under long enough!  These true believers will push their "cure" until the patient is killed, unfortunately.

If they did we wouldn't have had a Dem supermajority and things would be better less bad now.

89 Do the Republicans ever learn?
The Republicans got into trouble with spending in the late 90's when their leadership, specifically Tom DeLay, decided that in order to permanently entrench the GOP in Congress they had to spread the wealth around to their donors and hacks. Around this time Bill Kristol was announcing that,"You know, Big Gov is here to stay, get used to it and get on the gravy train."

4-6 years after they took over Congress, the establishment in the GOP and Neo Con circles began to ignore the people that 'brought them to the dance'-me and all of the people that believed that the GOP meant and believed what they were saying to us.

And in all honesty, I began to ignore them about the same time because there was only so much they could do with Clinton and they had already done a lot (not nearly enough). They increased discretionary spending and raised money for their campaigns and by the time the '06 election came around, a lot of the '94 Republicans were no longer in Congress or had been co-opted. Throw in to the mix that Bush appointed a sputtering basket case to be his press secretary (Scott McClelland) and the GOP finally paid the price for their Beltway arrogance.

And here we are again 16 years and at least $20,000 Billion later. Yet again the Republicans and the people are on the same page only this time the people are ahead of the GOP. GOP insiders don't appreciate the little people messing around in their fiefdom but they can certainly work with the enthusiasm.

We should start working on making them go away because if the Tea Party/Paul Ryan/Sarah Palin faction doesn't take control of the GOP before 2012, nothing will change. The Beltway GOPers will gladly sell out again, count on it. The Tea Party should make sure they don't get the chance and that is going to be my primary focus.

93 I'm not going to defend the GOP's record during the Bush administration when it comes to spending. I will. Most of what the Bush administration spent on (and borrowed for) were for things you get a return on, would get re-financed on repeatedly by satisfied creditors (as opposed to maxing the credit line on the take-off-from-work, casino-binge equivalent that was porkulus) and would have something to show for years (Numero Uno- being left alone, especially by dead terrorists). See also #90.
