MA Senate Election Starting To Get Through At White House?
— DrewM

Major Garrett from FNC interviewed David Axelrod and it sounds like they are coming to grips with reality.

Axelrod said the White House doesn't want any Senate action on health care until Brown is seated.

"I think it would be inappropriate," Axelrod said. "I think the people of Massachusetts would consider it inappropriate, and that's something we won't do."

Late Tuesday, Sen. Jim Webb, D-Va., called on the Senate to stop all health care legislation until Brown is seated. Axelrod's was the first signal that the White House agreed.

So no back door deal to jam this through in the next week or two and definitely nothing for Obama to sign at the State of the Union (which was talked about as a bit of theater at one point).

I don't want to say it but what the hell...it's dead. They will have to reconstruct the whole thing now and no one is going to have the stomach to deal with it. There's too many moving parts that were essentially irreconcilable before and in this political climate, it's now impossible.

Nearly every House Democrat and a bunch in the Senate are going to be going into survival mode for the next 10 months. Shoving this pile of shit across the finish line is not part of their new plan.

Not sure what the official signal for Waterloo is going to be but it's time to get the band warmed up.

2 I think they've resigned themselves to the only talking point they now have:

We tried to save your lives, but the Rethuglicans wouldn't let us. It is a statistical fact that one hundred years from now, those of you reading this will all all be DEAD.

3 Perhaps there is some scandi band out there that could sing a waterloo themed song to commemorate the occasion of the death of this crap sandwich bill.

4 Only the hard core Democrats wanted this Obama Health Care Bill before Tuesday. Today, only 1/3 "want" it. I wonder how many of those people vote that want it! Did Axlerod mention that.

7 Sure sounds like these waterheads (H/T LauraW) have done a 180 on most of their former positions after sleeping on it.  Last night, after the Scott heard 'round the world, Obama and the dems said that their "signature" issues would remain unchanged.  This morning, meh, not so much.

10 The politicians of our country are corrupt individuals who have no respect for those that slavishly put them into their positions of power.

We need to hit the reset button, and write concrete controls on the power WE ALLOW THEM.

Because without us THEY HAVE NO POWER.

Remember that.

This is FUCKING AMERICA.

NOT the fucking Soviet Union.

Posted by: kefka at January 20, 2010 11:01 AM (n1uMU)

24

Somebody said in another thread that the Pubs really need to hammer their own proposals for health care reform, in as many ways as possible, for the next ten months.  Keep proposing actual bills on both the House and Senate floors, and make these Donk Douchebags vote them down.  Then keep talking about how its the Dems stopping real reform, because their commie style takeover didn't take.

Who knows, by mid-summer, perhaps enough Donks will realize they're fucked, electionarily speaking, and will vote for a rational overhaul of the system proposed by the Pubs, rather than continuing to whine about how their shit sandwich was so great, but not passed because of evil Repubs.

Ummm...I'm not sure this is a waterloo moment.  Axelrod cautions against "SENATE ACTION" specifically.  The Senate doesn't need to do anything to pass the bill that's already been passed.  The House can just pass the Senate version.

Whether the House will act is another issue, but Axelrod said nothing about the House, and you can't parse the statements of these snakes too carefully.

That's all well and good, but this legislation doesn't require any Senate action and Granny's comments sound like the message has not been received at all in the House. If she can strongarm 218 votes then she'll do it, the American people, the White House, and the Senate be damned. And frankly, I think Obama would be happy for her to do it. He doesn't care about anything or anyone but himself.

One more thing, this election makes me despise people like Landrieu, Lincoln, Nelson, Bayh, McCaskill, and Webb even more. Cowards, the lot of them.

41 -- Beck commented on this too, as related to making both parties sweat.  Brown was elected by indies, not by those with concrete ties to either party.  The other nifty thing he mentioned was that Obozo never says the word "democrat" anymore.  It's all progressive, all the time.  "The progressives are fighting the republicans."

Beck is looking for a cage match between older-style dems/liberals and the batshite-crazy progressives.

I can't remember who it was but His Holiness had a private meeting with a Republican senator a few days ago. It makes me wonder if he was able to buy that guy off in order to get his vote, thus still securing his 60 votes AND say it was bi-partisan. I hope that is not the case but crazier things have happened and it would explain the reaction of Pelosi, Reid and The One. Pelosi can stay the dominatrix in the House and push push push. Meanwhile, Reid and The One can take the supposed high road saying, "wait until Brown is sworn in." Does that make me a conspiracy nut?

62 I love how respectful they are of the "people of Massachusetts."  Now if yesterday's race had occurred away from the East Coast corridor, particularly in the South, I seriously doubt they'd be concerned (or even fake concern) for the people's will.

Meanwhile, on a progressive friend's Facebook page below his post "thinks Maryland Democrats should plan for the November elections now" I read this comment from one of his friends:

"Time to get very busy.  Make the Republicans wish they had died at birth.  Time to go to war."

I guess he didn't hear Axelrod's comments or notice that it was the INDEPENDENTS (and some Dems), not the Republicans, who elected Scott Brown.

63 You know Obama, aka Captain Zero, and his gang of political machers at the White  House has screwed this particular political pooch so many different ways from breakfast, that I can't see why the Dems in the House and Senate should follow his political advice at all.  Even if the political advice is "this thing smells bad, let's dig a deep hole, throw it in the hole, put some lime over it to kill the smell, and then cover it up."   Now that would be good advice--but the Dems on Capital Hill ain't takin' any more advice from Captain Zero.

Frankly, as soon as Webb or any other Democratic Senator proclaimed "no more ObamaCare votes until Brown is sworn," the White House had no choice but to echo the sentiment because they were back to 59 votes (not even considering the Constitutional point:  whether Brown was sworn or not, Kirk's tenure ENDED with the election, PERIOD) anyway.

I love it that Obama seems to want to tap into that anti-Obama spirit:  "It's the same frustration that swept ME into office . . ."  Heh, AS IF.  What swept the prancing, preening peacock into the Presidency was typical voter fatigue after 8 years of one party in the White House (in the last 100 years, only G.H.W.Bush was able to break that trend) combined with a huge influx of new young and ignorant voters who a) thought it would be "pretty cool to elect a black dude" and b) saw no need for experience at anything, since they themselves feel well qualified to start at the top of any given field, too.
