— Ace A family nursed a malnourished deer back to health. Now it plays with the dog.
Notice the dog and the deer are playing -- acting out aggression routines in sport-form -- but they'e playing two different games. The deer's game is a little more dangerous, as he starts windmilling those hard hooves around.
The dog mostly just wants to play keep-away with the ball.
Thanks to rdbrewer.

Obviously a Tea Party deer. I mean look at how violent it was to the dog who just wanted to play ball. And I mean look at the color of the dog. Need I say more?

The deer didn't have the first idea what was going on. It was just randomly striking out at the vastly more intelligent dog. Carnivores vs Herbivores.
Are those crops in the background? Have they been danced around yet?

The deer's a browsing herbivore and has no concept of a game based on fighting over a prey item. His game is based on the kind of dominance combat he'll have to engage in when he battles other deer for mating rights.
At the end, the dog -- for a moment -- joins in the deer's game of fisticuffs, but apparently it's not as fun as the keepaway game.
I wonder why those two cats didn't just jump on the backs of the deer and dog, take their ears like reins, and ride them off into the sunset.

Actually, I'd probably want to keep the deer nice and sedentary and overfed. The less frolicking the better.

The cats are just watching because they've already had first hand experience with the fawn's playful hooves.
They're waiting for the "cluebat" to school the dog. I'm betting that the good folks who own these pets leave the deer and the dog in the yard together, sans ball, and come home to a really unfortunate learning experience.
Posted by: Speller at April 02, 2010 11:36 AM (o0R2E)
my dogs managed to get a game of tag going with a deer last year. They would chase the deer to the edge of our property (said edge having the invisible fence) and when they turned back to the house the deer would chase them until they would again turn and chase her back to the property edge. This went on for at least 30 minutes until I realized the deer was simply keeping my dogs from noticing the fawn that was hiding elsewhere on the property. Brought the dogs into the house and let the deer get her fawn and scram.
Since then my dogs chase deer but never get too close in case one decides to stop running away. They like the idea of chasing, not so much the idea of actually catching a deer that is 5 times their size.
My hound/greyhound mix usually races deer by running next to them trying to beat them to the perimeter. Its all a race to him and he's fast, stupid and utterly deviod of courage when it comes to deer.

The comments attached to the video say that the deer was free-roaming and hung out with other deer, but would come back to the house to eat cat food and play with the dog. Apparently it's grown and doesn't come by anymore, so the dog is safe.
This meaning that it's now fair game for venison steak.

Yeah... that's odd. I've never seen deer play like that with each other. But it does appear to be playing.
But yeah.. if that deer got any damn bigger that dog is pretty much dead. I'm suprised it didn't get wounded from that video.

The deer is thinking, "Obviously this creature is not a threat and wants to engage in some domination challenge, but why won't it kick back? Why does it keep dropping that stupid toy-thing? I have no interest in that!"
The dog is thinking, "Obviously this creature is not a threat and wants to play, but why won't it try to take the toy? Chase me, chase me and let's have a tug of war!"
"The cats are thinking, "if only that deer was smaller, and couldn't kick to defend itself. You know, more like a rodent or a birdie. Then it would be on!"

No, really, keep away is a predator games. The ball represents food. It's a food challenge. Deer don't play food games. They defend by windmilling and using horns and running. How do I know this? I don't.

I dunno if that little deer could really harm the dawg that badly. Dogs are very tough, hounds and retrievers like that one especially.
My hound dog ran full-speed into a fence post head-first, fell over sideways , stood up, shook once and ran off after the dog that had been chasing her.
Dogs play rough.
