Mark Steyn: The Long, Slow, Unremarked-Upon Death of Free Speech
— Ace

"This is the aging of the dawn of Aquarius."

I heard a lot of that kind of talk during my battles with the Canadian ‘human rights’ commissions a few years ago: of course, we all believe in free speech, but it’s a question of how you ‘strike the balance’, where you ‘draw the line’… which all sounds terribly reasonable and Canadian, and apparently Australian, too. But in reality the point of free speech is for the stuff that’s over the line, and strikingly unbalanced. If free speech is only for polite persons of mild temperament within government-policed parameters, it isn’t free at all. So screw that.

But I don’t really think that many people these days are genuinely interested in ‘striking the balance’; they’ve drawn the line and they’re increasingly unashamed about which side of it they stand. What all the above stories have in common, whether nominally about Israel, gay marriage, climate change, Islam, or even freedom of the press, is that one side has cheerfully swapped that apocryphal Voltaire quote about disagreeing with what you say but defending to the death your right to say it for the pithier Ring Lardner line: ‘“Shut up,” he explained.’

A generation ago, progressive opinion at least felt obliged to pay lip service to the Voltaire shtick. These days, nobody’s asking you to defend yourself to the death: a mildly supportive retweet would do. But even that’s further than most of those in the academy, the arts, the media are prepared to go. As Erin Ching, a student at 60-grand-a-year Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania, put it in her college newspaper the other day: ‘What really bothered me is the whole idea that at a liberal arts college we need to be hearing a diversity of opinion.’ Yeah, who needs that? There speaks the voice of a generation: celebrate diversity by enforcing conformity.

I actually noticed this story on Twitchy, because a left-leaning comic, Patton Oswald, approvingly retweeted the link, stating he agreed with the general thrust, and for that blasphemy, was then set upon by the zealous inquisitors of the Holy Universal Unification Church of Shut Up.

104 I said this today in a thread below, but I'm going to repeat it here because internet.

I've said this a million times, on this very site:

Liberals do not believe that there are such things as "opinions." There are facts and there are falsehoods, and all their world-views are based on their "facts."

So to argue against Liberalism is to argue against "facts." And who can argue against "facts"? Only benighted fools. And who argues with fools?

That's why Liberals become so enraged when people disagree with them--according to the Liberal, the opposer is either lying or stupid.

That's also why Liberals see absolutely nothing wrong whatsoever to using power to crush conservative opinions. After all, they "reason," if you found out your child's math teacher was teaching 2 + 2= 5, you would fight so he could no longer teach such lies, right? That's exactly what Liberals believe they are doing, and why they fight so hard against any ideas that aren't "Liberal."

Liberalism is a form of mental disease. They themselves prove this every single day.

123 There was a famous case in Apartheid South Africa in which a white woman gave birth to a "colored" (half black) baby. Since inter-racial sex was illegal at the time, she was arrested and charged with having sexual relations with a black man. She swore up and down she had never done such a thing, and had always been faithful to her white husband. Her husband and the courts, needless to say, pointed at the baby and said -- well, do we even need to say anything? The proof is right there. But she continued to protest her innocence. And she she hired a lawyer. A very good lawyer. And he did some good gumshoe-ing. And here's what he found out: A black guy went to a black prostitute, and had sex with her, not using a condom. He deposited his semen therein. Then about 15 minutes later, at the dingy whorehouse, the next customer came in, who was a white guy. He also proceeded to do his business without a condom. After he withdrew, his willy was dripping with semen, which was a mixture of his own -- and of the guy's who came (pun intended) before him. You might think of it as the ultimate case of "sloppy seconds." Then he went home to his white wife -- who just happened to be the plaintiff in this case -- and within an hour or so had conjugal relations with her, using his unwashed uncircumcised ding-dong, and once again foregoing condomhood. Well, his weak-ass white sperm could not compete with the greatly outnumbered and quickly fading black sperm in the race to the ovum, and in one of those crazy one-in-a-million things that just happen, the original black guy's sperm impregnated the white guy's wife, using his own white penis as the delivery device. And so this white woman became pregnant with a black man's baby, despite having never even met the man. The husband actually cooperated with the investigation, because he just didn't want to believe that his wife had cheated on him, and was looking for any explanation. Even an explanation that proved, eventually, that he had cheated on his wife. But his cooperation was what made the fact-finding possible. Legal result? The case against the wife was thrown out of court -- and the husband was now charged with having interracial sex with the prostitute -- and he was convicted. A short time later Apartheid ended. But without the antiquated laws this biological mystery for the ages would never have been uncovered.

133 They always eat their own. Always. And "their own" are always surprised when it happens to them. The sci-fi community is what I'm most familiar with but I have no reason at all to think that any other group of grievance progressives are any different. In fact, recall GLAAD attacking GLEE? Even from the *inside* that should have been an incredible spectacle clear to one and all. Anyway, author Larry Correia, the International Lord of Hate, wrote this the other day about sci-fi progs eating their own (sort of incidental to a different argument): "I pissed off the left half of the internet clear back in January. ThatÂ’s like ten million years in internet time. Since then the Social Justice Warrior crowd has moved on and been outraged by Jonathan Ross for possibly telling fat jokes in the future, then they got outraged at Neil Gaiman for his being surprised at how easily they get outraged, then they got outraged at Robert Silverburg and a couple dozen other prominent writers for saying that they didnÂ’t want a soviet style editorial board to prosecute thought crime, then they got outraged at liberal Patrick Rothfuss for saying maybe they shouldnÂ’t be so easily outraged all the time, then they got outraged at liberal Wil Wheaton for agreeing with Rothfuss, and I think IÂ’m forgetting some other outrages in there too." I guarantee you that each of those progressive liberals thought they were making thoughtful and reasoned remarks that would *certainly* be accepted as such by the thoughtful and good-hearted people they were addressing. They eat their own. Eventually, the new prey animals are going to figure that out. I anticipate a bloodbath.

168 The Progressives only care about destroying society (piecemeal or all at once), so that they can impose their utopia visions. American culture (and the broader Anglo-sphere, as seen by Steyn), is actually one of the most inclusive and tolerance societies ever. Sure, and governments may act contrary to that from time to time, but that core ethos remains and corrects that. The Left uses this to destroy us. It is the social equivalent of Lenin's quip about the capitalists selling the Reds enough rope to hang the capitalists with. They demand "tolerance" saying they want to protect their "privacy" and the sanctity of the bedroom; or alternately seek to use our natural charitableness to engorge the welfare state by calling anyone who disagrees some type of miser. Then they seek to normalize it in stages using those same excuses and start condemning people who disagree. Then, once they have power, they declare that "tolerance of intolerance should not be tolerated" (i.e. Marcuse's "Repressive Tolerance"), and that society is inately evil and intolerant to the point that only by purging ourselves of that can we find "tolerance" despite the fact that those champions of "tolerance" have become the most intolerance (though keeping the word "tolerance" in a most Orwellian sense).

We will be listening to you and amplifying YOUR hopes as we visit communities across the country. This month, MSNBC brings Growing Hope to college campuses. Rhys Young, 50, of Dovecote Close in Trowbridge, was sentenced to two years and four months in prison at Swindon Crown Court after admitting to sexual activity with the boy, dating back to 2006. nothing to see here

182 When it comes to X-Men, McKellen says that he wasn't familiar the classic comic series when director Bryan Singer asked him to get involved with the film. "I was a little bit bewildered as to how I could fit in," McKellen says. "[Bryan] said to me that being a mutant, which is what all the X-Men are, and the difficulties that they face in a society that doesn't like them because they're different, is something than an openly gay person might want to be involved with." McKellen says that Singer pointed out to him that X-Men is most popular amongst young blacks, young gays and young Jews—groups that have been taught by society that their differences are a times a disadvantage. He added that he saw the film as a way to show young people that, despite the differences they have, like the X-Men, they are still valued. "I went into X-Men thinking it was a bit of a political statement rather than just a distraction from real life," McKellen says. "The whole thing has come to a wonderful thing [sic] this week when Ellen Page, who plays one of the mutants, has just come out herself, which is just wonderful. This is my moment to send her my congratulations because I don't have her email." Actress Ellen Page publicly came out as gay Friday evening while giving a speech at Time to THRIVE, a conference for LGBT youth. She said that she was tired of hiding her sexuality and lying by omission, something McKellen says he can identify with. nothing to see here

Freedom (economic, political, artistic, religious, etc) has seen an amazing recession in the last 5 years- not just abroad. There are very few nations that I would characterize as free. I'm at a rather depressed point where I don't think another Reagan could save things; another Washington might be necessary and I sure don't see many of those.

Conservative Riding Orca @ 59 - intrigued by your comment re Dem governor's race and backlash from the treatment of Joe the Plumber.

I'll bet I'm not the only one here for whom the entire Joe incident - from (of course) the "press" to the state govt. outing his personal info, etc. - was actually one of the deeply disturbing and discouraging events (among many) of 2008.  It would provide microscopic and probably only symbolic reassurance of a sort if there were, in fact, a backlash.

The treatment of Palin, the immediate coarsening of official behavior/ditching of modern responsible standards ("I'm the only one between them and the pitchforks"), the mau-mauing of bank officers (at their homes) ....... jeebus the US seemed to descend, almost instantly, into a rough Third World country where politics is barely removed from tribal/gang conflict.

With, of course (and AFAIK), not a peep of protest or criticism from any adult (commentator, corporate, GOP ..... Democrat - and I note that since I believe such behavior just a few years earlier would have in fact been met with quite a bit of condemnation from all sides).

195 I don't think liberalism is a mental disease. Liberals are people who are emotionally invested in "being right," believe that the collective empowers the individual rather than the other way around, and are insulated from the consequences of their own mistakes. If you challenge their beliefs, their emotion-driven response is to go for your throat. Anyone who has become emotionally invested in "knowing what is really going on," rather than just in "being right," has a chance at being conservative. If you challenge their beliefs, the emotionally driven response is to re-evaluate, often passionately. But in each case, the emotions work the same, normal, human way. Liberals are people too, which makes what is coming all the more tragic if we cannot find a way to stop it in time.

Yeah. Well the problem with that is that if the "valuing" is mandatory, then it's really not.

And that's where they've crossed the line.

When they demand, and use the power of the Government to enforce that demand, that they be respected without earning it, then they've lost and the only answer to them then is the continued repression of those that will not bend to their demands.

And at some point people react.

It will not be pleasant unless somehow certain "communities" do not ratchet back their rhetoric and begin actually earning the respect that they crave.

Demanding respect never works. Never has, never will.

206 194 It's funny, you'd think the Bill Of Rights was settled law. Posted by: Soothsayer at April 17, 2014 09:28 PM (zh9tu) It's a fundamental bedrock difference between world views. One side sees these rights as invioble and self evident, because they come to is by virtue of being created In the image of God, and thus are rights bestowed upon us by our Creator, simply because we are human. No other distinction or reason is needed. The Bill of Rights was merely a statement in writing of what people knew to be true: these rights are God given and cannot be taken away by government. The other side sees the exact opposite. These rights are given by government to those deemed worthy, and can be removed when those individuals or groups violate the government interests. They are not innate, they are situational. They are temporary depending upon the situation, not permanent based upon humanity.

207 Not precisely about free speech but about freedom of the press... what good is freedom of the press if the press doesn't WANT to be free - if the press sees its calling as serving the interests on one political party? In my local paper I found three articles in the last few weeks about a Republican Congressman passionately kissing a lady who was not only not his wife, but someone else's. I also found a story about how the other guy felt about it. But I did not find a single reference to FOIA-released documents clearly indicating collusion between Democrat legislators and the IRS, in one case by a Democrat ON THE HOUSE OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE who has sought to discredit their investigations. Let me be clear - these are NOT ALLEGATIONS - they are IRS memos forced into the public view by FOIA demands, which were strenuously resisted. These were not Dan Rather / MS Word fake but accurate memos designed to swing a Presidential election, these were real IRS documents about swinging a Presidential election! And the damned thing is, since they won't print an article about it, there is nothing to comment on in their "feedback" blog! And to send a letter to the editor is a waste of time, and forces me to divulge my identity in a community where conservatives are routinely discriminated against. Our freedom to speak is vital, but if our ability to know the truth is controlled by others, how do we know to speak out? We are in the hands of tyrants already - they just haven't had to bother using violence yet, because their control of our national discourse is so perfect, it makes it unnecessary!

208 Whenever there’s something gay in Los Angeles, there is always an after party at 2012 director Roland Emmerich’s estate. With Valkyrie director-producer Bryan Singer (pictured, left) at his side, the A-gays gather to pay their respects — before stripping down to their Speedos and diving into the pool. With West Hollywood’s gay pride parade yesterday, it only made sense Emmerich would once again open up his gates to LA’s gays. One attendee sends photo evidence of the fracas, which came complete with Candis Cayne performing with a Jaws theme (she ended up in getting “attacked,” ended up in the pool, and “blood” going everywhere) — although the photos shuttled to our inbox shows less performance, more “attempting to stand.” Alas, we cannot confirm whether involuntarily adult film star Dustin Lance Black attended last night’s soiree, as he’s been known to. And sorry, no photos of the after-after party (which generally has a clothing-optional policy), nor do we have pictures from what happened when Roland and Bryan (pictured, Page 3) took a few select young men into the house for private casting sessions. from Queerty.com so Roland Emmerich is next too

Really feel badly for all of you with college-age kids.  Sending them off to what, in so many cases, have become alien, toxic, disgracefully, anti-American islands of idiocy (universities).  Talking today with a good friend, whose brother is a scientist at a major NYC university, a few years back when my friend was casting around for work possibilities he asked his brother about the univ.  Brother advised him he'd last a few days at most.  Once his impermissible nature was known (non-leftwing asshat, with real-world experience in big policy areas) he'd be isolated and hounded out.

Really an extraordinary thing.  As ace sometimes puts it plaintively - "is this America?".   I myself passed on even going for a job opening a few years ago  because it was at a university (a business school, even).  I started to gear up to apply for it, then stepped back and imagined how many days I would last.  I'm not going to sit through some stupid meeting listening to idiotic "green" nonsense - not even one - without challenging it.  And that would just be one intolerable area of nonsense.

I view universities as mostly alien - and repugnant - places now.  And I once considered an academic career, and had fairly good experiences when I was in school.  Depressing.

370 355 --- I'll give it another try! The necessary evolution of mankind from feudalism to capitalism to socialism is a matter of Science!!! To align yourself with the building of communism is thus to be "on the right side of history." It nevertheless happens that on the road to communism there are occasional distractions (going "sideways,") such as WWII, where the proletariat had to ally with bourgeois nations to defeat Hitler. There are also times when the counter-revolution may set progress back (going "backwards") by winning a specific battle. But this is only a matter of "one step backward, two steps forward." History consists of the INEVITABLE (Science!!!) march to communism and thus any reactionary victory is only a temporary glitch.

372 We must be very careful when we talk about what "free speech" is.  Legally speaking free speech in the US is the freedom to speak (non-harmful speech) without prior censorship by a government body.  Note that when I say non-harmful what that means is you can not go out an incite a riot so you can watch it burn.

What it does NOT mean is that you can not go out and call your boss a bunch of vile names and be free from being fired.  Being fired for making a prop 8 contribution is in itself vile, but unless the firing organization violates some other law it is perfectly legal.

378 375 "It is foolish to believe this. The totalitarian left is very well armed."

Posted by: Czar Peter at April 18, 2014 09:10 AM (ftTF5)

The totalitarian left has been steadily and systematically equipping a host of federal agencies with SWAT (not conventional 'police') powers and equipment, as well as handing out military 'surplus' gear to sympathetic state and local police forces.  Conservatives have foolishly gone along with this up-arming of the state under the vain belief that the police are ipso facto on the side of the people.

But the new military-equipped SWAT forces sprinkled throughout the land are the organizing principle of the 'civilian national security force as powerful as the military' about which Obama boasted.  They are also the means by which to get around Posse Comitatus.  While the military as currently constituted might not consent to wage war against Americans at home, the Left expects (correctly, alas) that as long as it is in charge, the police will happily carry out whatever tyranny Washington seeks to inflict on us.  They'll shoot us down like vermin and sleep well at night, because Officer Safety! is the only principle to which they all give allegiance.
