Markets Repeating Head and Shoulders Pattern of Great Depression
— Ace

The pattern consists (to the extent I understand it) of attempting to test new highs, finding no support for such highs, and then testing new lows; once the market finds no support at the higher head and shoulders peak, it falls rapidly to a new lower level below "the neckline."

patterns head and shoulders.png

And that's not a good thing.

“Those who don’t remember history are doomed to repeat it…there was a head and shoulders pattern that developed before the Depression in 1929, then with the recovery in 1930 we had another head and shoulders pattern that preceded a fall in the market, and in the current Dow situation we see an exact repeat of that environment,” Guppy said.

Unexpectedly, we should say.

But Always Keep In Mind What's Really Important In Life:

16 Chartists are the astrologers of the modern market.

This market is heading for ruin, but it has nothing to do with any chart formations.  What drives markets, in the long run, is growth.  What kills markets, in the long run, is stagnation.  We have a pro-stagnation set of staticists running our federal government implementing every anti-growth, anti-competitive policy they can think of, along with an insane amount of deficit spending and printing of money and that will spell doom, regardless of how the chart looks.

20 this seems like a weird comparison to me. the head and shoulders pattern is incredibly common, and certainly no sign of impending collapse. for a brief while I wrote software to analyze and make stock predictions, and the head and shoulder pattern came up nearly every week. I believe most online stock brokers even offer pattern recognition for this, allowing you to trigger buy/sell orders if the pattern shows up.

Posted by: Bill Clinton - ready to but your deficit at July 05, 2010 11:04 AM (YVZlY)

22 The mechanizations of the stock market don't worry me a bit. The stock market is NOT the economy and it really is a poor indicator of it. Only the MFM pushes the market, then and the government.  The real economy is too complicated to get across in a 30 second sound bite before moving on to another Demcrap PR session and a real commercial.

The Indonesian Imbecile will still be running the Executive after November, so I'm not sure that November is going to provide any great relief for our nation's existential problem.  Congress may change hands but that won't stop asinine, America-hating policy from being implemented by the White House.  They have lots of overstepping of their Constitutional limits to warp and destroy America, foreign policy to screw up worse than anyone could imagine, wars to fuck up, allies to push away, enemies to give our stuff to, and a stack of blank Executive orders up the wazoo that will keep this nation spinning even if Congress went 100% GOP.

We can estimate it based on what the Nikkei and NASDAQ have done:

Nikkei Dec 1989: 39,000

Nikkei Jul 2010: 9,300

20 years.  -76% return

NASDAQ Mar 2000: 5,000

NASDAQ Jul 2010: 2,090

10 years. -60% return

The Dow should be returning a similar sort of performance, which puts the bottom down around 4,000.

November isn't going to magically fix everything.  At best it will cause enough gridlock to but the brakes on the Obama / Pelosi economy-destroying agenda, but don't expect the fuckups already in place to be reversed.

It's going to take a long time to recover from 9.5% (closer to double that in reality) unemployment.  The only thing we'll be able to do after November is to stem the bleeding a little bit.

It will be interesting to see how the thin skinned manchild that is Obama deals with a Republican controlled House.  Clinton was skilled enough to play the accomplishments of a Republican Congress to advantage; I don't see Obama having the ability to do more than whine and lash out.

If the market was really reacting to the true financial situation and not computerized controls and rapacious insider manipulators, the Dow would be down around 4000 right now.

This situation won't improve until two things happen: (1) the Mohammedan Mouthpiece is removed from office and (2) controls are put in place to restore the stock market to its historic true function, which is to reflect the health of industry and economy, rewarding those who produce, not the paper-shuffling would-be Madoffs who inhabit Wall Street these days.

One reason the "Great" Depresion lasted so long was that the Fed Government kept changing the rules.  There was constant legislation coming down the pike which changed the rules that business runs by... thus, like now, people were afraid to invest because the Government was involved in EVERYTHING.

One reason the "Great" Depresion lasted so long was that the Fed Government kept changing the rules.  There was constant legislation coming down the pike which changed the rules that business runs by... thus, like now, people were afraid to invest because the Government was involved in EVERYTHING.

You sir are a genius.  Nobody will invest their hard earned money while government is changing or debating the rules every single day.  There are already risks involved with investing.  Nobody wants to deal with additional "risks" imposed by the government.

...and my liberal friends cannot figure out how Republicans are looking better in November?

Just as it STANDS the GOP has a +3.25 edge in the generic ballot- when you average Gallup (REGISTERED Voters not that awful Adults poll), Pew, DemCorp, Ipsos and Rasmussen.

Republicans have a 15-25pt enthusiasm edge.

How anyone can doubt the wave is coming astounds me. Even the eeyores who think it all dries up- peoples opinions are solidifying- which is good- 4 months ahead. The economy is not going to be sunshine and kittens and tits in 1/3 of a year.

Now its a matter of how BIG the wave is.

Republicans are within MOE or leading in ELEVEN states held by Democrats in the US Senate race: 1 more ahead of what they need to flip.

Republicans are currently getting about 32 seats per that Dem ostrich, Charlie Cook. Democrats have to defend SEVENTY seats in the House to just 4 that the GOP needs to defend.

The ugliest sign are the gubernatorial races. Republicans are likely to lose Connecticut, Rhode Island (to an Indy- Lincoln Chaffee no less), Hawaii...possibly California.

Democrats are facing losses now in Oregon,Wyoming,Colorado, New Mexico, Kansas, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, MARYLAND (!), Pennsylvania, and Maine.

We are likely to wake up after Election day to a country where Republicans out-Gov Democrats by 2-1 in governors mansions.

These numbers can go in only 2 directions- up, and down. With the economy and conservative/libertarian voter enthusiasm- who really wants to bet its all down from here for us?

I agree.  I like to compare chartists to astrologers because, back in the day, astrologers were actually collecting important scientific data.  It was just their interpretation of the data that was divorced from any observable connection to reality (though there are clear seasonal patterns to most things and the tide does have a huge effect on lots of behavior ...).  I think, even in addition to the self-fulfilling power of chart technicals (or anything else that many were convinced had an impact) there is something to be gleaned from the price dynamics.  I just think that "straight lines and channels" are vastly too simplistic and linear to be of value.

We are fast morphing ourselves into a period not unlike Europe circa the late 1940's, early 1950's, where all that was going on largely focused on simple survival.  It took Europe until about the mid 1960's before luxury became an option again.

#158

RCP is pissing me off because it fails to show CA as a tossup yet shows other states as up in the air.

Shows MN Gov as lean Dem takeover when poll after poll shows 2 of 3 contenders beat the Dem by 7.

INCLUDED A POLL OF "ADULTS" FOR GENERIC BALLOT!

wtf?

I have averaged the latest polling and factored in the GOP generic margin advantage AND enthusiasm.

US SENATE- DEM: OR,HI,CT,VT,NYA,NYB,MD- 7 SAFE.

TOSSUP-CA,WA,WI,FL

GOP-ND,DE,IN,AR,PA,CO,NV,IL

You factor in the generic ballot and add that to the polling and it shows the spread of the wave- had people on the right done that in the last week before 2008 they wouldn't have been so laisse-faire or sadly hopeful for a bradley effect- Dems had a +9 generic preference and that tipped nearly every swing state over the top for O (besides Missouri and Montana).

US GOV RACES-

DEM: HI,NH,NY,CT,AR

IND: RI

TOSSUP-CO,CA,NM,MA,MD

GOP (list is long, forgive me)- OR,NV,WY,UT,ID,SD,TX,KS,OK,NE,IA,MN,AL,GA,SC,FL,TN,IL,WI,

OH,PA,ME,VT,AK,AZ

FOR A BALANCE OF R-32 D-12 I-1 Tossup-5

so much for that HUGE bump in Democratic support after Health Care, hunh?

I can't WAIT for the HUGE BUMPS they get after Immigration and C&T start up...

We are not necessarily screwed until November.

The Democrats are now starting to panic and cannibalize themselves.

But there are JUST enough Democrats scared shitless still- not the full blown go-down-with-the-ship-Marxists but rather the I-will-vote-to-stick-around-opportunists  that will end up dragging out the rest of O's agenda so much it will collide with their campaign schedules, and by then they will be too preoccupied with the vote outside to vote inside.

186 well, it really isn't surprising. when a president does the same exact things that fdr did, which of course, made the depression last much longer then it should have, then of course we're going to get the same result. i am not surprised at all, and frankly after reading laffer's op ed piece on the tax hikes (oh , sorry libtards, i mean, the tax increases that will result from the tax cuts being allowed to expire. i know u linguistically-trained, sophists like to twist words into pretzels) scheduled for '11 in the wsj, i am surprised that people haven't been talking more about it all.

so libtards, here are some basic maxims (no, not the magazine) which will help explain why this all is happening:

penalize production you get non-production

reward non-production you get non production

reward production you get production

penalize non-production you get production

187 Is the _Economist_ cover photoshopped? Really, I couldn't tell. I mean, with stories that were in the _Onion_ three years ago showing up in the _New York Times_ as straight news these days it's hard to distinguish. Besides, the photoshoppers usually are more accurate. Just like Dan Rather. /snark/
