Martial ONT [Weirddave]
— Ace Open Blog

Thursday night. I guess that means it's my turn to be frustrated by the temporary blog software. I swear y'all, all of us COBs have been trying our damndest to get our IT guy to say "yxiP retsiM", sending him back to the 5th dimension and restoring the blog to normal. So far, no luck.

Today was a beautiful day here, 80-couple degrees, low humidity, bright blue sky with scattered cotton ball clouds and a bright sun. Just the perfect day to put the top down and drive to Palestine, which I did. There I bought two 9.9 Johnson outboard motors for $350. I thought there was only 1, but he threw in the other as a "parts motor". Parts motor hell, it runs fine, all that needs to be fixed is one of the clamps and the steering handle. Hell of a deal, I think. The motor size limit on our lake is 9.9, but it doesn't say anything about how many 9.9 motors you can have. I'm thinking of rigging both of them onto the back of the jon boat (not really). Twin 9.9s, baby, I'll rule the lake! Gonna spend all summer on the lake, just me, my girl and my Johnson.

Proof That Communism Has Come To America

Don't you see people? They're seizing the means of reproduction!

(I know it's satire. Couldn't resist the pun)

Based

In the past century, Poland has suffered mightily under both the Nazis and the Commies. Poland knows what's what. Poland don't play, boys. Have I mentioned how much I like Poland?

Musical Interlude
In the spirit of the previous story:

One of these days I'm gonna get me a full suit of winged hussar armor - and wear it whenever I go out riding my motorcycle.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in Europe....

And no, I don't know what to make of that. However, it does have a good beat and you can probably dance to it. Maybe I'll get hussars armor and cruise around in a wingtip.

Swords!

"When I got this sword, it was completely covered in blood rust.” Sword maker Francis Boyd is showing me yet another weapon pulled from yet another safe in the heavily fortified workshop behind his northern California home."You can tell it’s blood,” he says matter-of-factly, "because ordinary rust turns the grinding water brown. If it’s blood rust it bleeds, it looks like blood in the water. Even 2,000 years old, it bleeds. And it smells like a steak cooking, like cooked meat. I’ve encountered this before with Japanese swords from World War II. If there’s blood on the sword and you start polishing it, the sword bleeds. It comes with the territory"

4-Chan Saves The World

Heh. They were sick of everyone making fun of them.

June 6, 1944
Operation Overlord commences, and thousands of allied forces land in Normandy. After securing their beachhead, wave after wave advance up the steep hills and breakout into the German rear.

Because . . . err . . . Some Polish men who were part of the troops that saved Europe on that day emigrated to North America and 318 years later were working for Cantor Fitzgerald in the World Trade Center?

When I was 8, I met my great grandmother, who I only knew as "Bapka", which is sorta Polish for Grandmother (I'm told). She was so old that she could barely move, but she roused herself to make Golumpkis for us, cussing at us in Polish the whole time, but with a sly grin on her face and giving us a lot of eyes-twinkling side eye. She was really cool for a super old person.

Golabki, but I've always heard it pronounced like "holoopki". My grandpa loved them, but he always had grammy make them without veal because he thought it was unnecessarily cruel.

165 I watched my fair share of Peppa when my girl was little. She'd call it a "baby show" now. The writers had a pretty good sense of humor. One of those shows that little ones would find amusing and adults could laugh too. At least till you saw that episode five million times.

Life back then, and even before with diapers and feeding and baby crying and figuring things out as a first-time parent seems so simple now. Felt wild and overly difficult then but I'd go back to those days of sleepless nights, and butt wiping to get away from the present covid muzzles and our empty-headed tyrants today.

182 However, water systems destroy everything in the data center.
Not as thoroughly as fire though.

We have four servers in that datacenter at my day job, those are all back up now.  They estimate that less than 10% of their servers were affected by water, but that's still a couple of thousand systems.  (Maybe more, I'm guessing by the IDs of my servers.)
And generators shouldn't be in the data center room.
That's for damn sure.  I don't think they were actually in the server room since the fire didn't affect any servers directly, but they should have been in their own outbuilding with its own fire control system.

Change the fluids, plugs, and wires.  You're probably good to go. Those old Johnson outboards are built crazy-good.   I once saw a smaller one that dunked into salt water for 24 hours, then just sat for a year, and with minor maintenance, it ran again.
Now, the paint sucked pretty bad, but it was amazing to hear it run again after what it was put through.

214 Good evening, ONT hordelings. Thanks for struggling to bring us your usual servings, WeirdDave.

About the current blogware:

In the Before Time, when I'm too behind on threads to scan all the comments, I will just search for "http" to find all the great links AoSHQers post.

This doesn't work when folks leave off the "http" (and I think I read that's how TinyURL is serving them up now), but it caught anything with it.

NOW, however, folks can create actual hot links (welcome to the 21st Century), so an http doesn't show up. There's nothing that explicitly distinguishes these links, because commenters can use color and underline which likes link a look.

ALSO, all the nics are in red, so you have to hover over each one to see if it's a link.

That's okay, though. I have plenty of time to quickly eyeball every comment and hover over every nic on every thread.

Not complaining so much as lamenting. The Horde has always provided a rich field of links. The Olde Wayze were easier to link-search.

End mild rant.

Just tried the Preview for the first time. Note that the green box gets cleared when Previewing. Just FYI.

219 The tank has a halon firefighting system to automatically extinguish fires in the crew compartment. The engine compartment has a firefighting system that is engaged by pulling a T-handle located on the left side of the hull. The Halon gas can be dangerous to the crew.[84] However, the toxicity of Halon 1301 gas at 7% concentration is much less than the combustion products produced by fire in the crew compartment, and CO2 dump would be lethal to the crew.

No way. X-15 did less than a quarter of that. The space shuttle did less on reentry.  And currently, government regulations on noise levels are the biggest hurdle for greater than Mach 1 commercial flight.

Now commercial space travel? Sure. But that's not something I or anyone else that isn't empty-headed would designate as "air"craft.

238 >> K-152 Nerpa accident.
First of all, the gas there was not Halon, but another one, some sort of refrigerant that was a good fire suppression agent. And most importantly, some idiot triggered it on submerged submarine. The victims died from oxygen depletion and severe frost bite. It was a massive release.
There are protocols in place which include everyone donning breathing equipment when the fire suppression system goes off. None of those were followed -- it was some sort of sea trial and they had lots of civilians on board.

Yep, non-toxic.  Designed to drive all the O2 out  of the room to extinguish fires, and very good at that task.  Which also extinguishes people if they don't move fast.

241 The first Data Center I ever worked in had a Halon fire-suppression system. The Emergency Protocol binder had about a three page flowchart of what to do during a fire. It would take at least 15 minutes to complete all steps if you followed the flowchart.

I always thought it was toxic but reading up on it now I see you're right, at effective suppression concentrations it causes "giddiness" but no lack of consciousness and no prolonged effect.

252 (Wikipedia says, I'm definitely no expert on this, just reading what they show): Halon is supposed to be used at 5% concentrations which would not displace all the gas. The canisters and delivery systems are designed to keep the concentration at around that 5% which would still leave plenty of O2. A lot more than would be displaced by a fire's CO and CO2.

Still, in the event of a fire, I would advise running away while waving your arms wildly in the air.

253 Deep Ellum diary: Normally, I don't give money to the homeless down here, unless they're doing something, like playing an instrument or making a hat out of palm fronds.
A couple of assholes hang out in front of 7-Eleven and say, "Hey man! Give me some money! Buy me a Coke!"
To which I reply, "I need some money." Or usually, a hale and hearty "Fuck off!"
There's been a girl sleeping on the sidewalk in front of the dog park. It's kind of covered and sheltered, under the overpass, but right there on the sidewalk. She's usually crashed out while I'm walking Rhubarb Doggo, and I'm through there about 4 or 5 times a day. Always curled up in a blanket. Today she was up, and I saw her crossing Canton street headed down Good-Latimer. God told me to give her a 20, and I ignored the prompting.  Until I met up with her on the corner.
Normally, the homeless don't approach Rhubarb Doggo, because she doesn't cotton to bullshit, and brooks no fuckheadery. She will bark and snarl at sketchy fucks, as it should be. She is a Good Dog.

Homeless girl says, "Sir, do you have a dollar so I get something to eat?"
God says, "You got a 20, give it up, shithead."

So yeah, Rhubarb says, "No, I don't have dollar. All I got is this 20. Here. Have a good day. "
I got a "thank you so much", but I was sad because that lovely girl, probably in her 20's but looks like she was pushing 40 because hard living, was probably going to go get a 7-Eleven burrito and then get high, and probably have to give some fuckhead a beej when she was short.

255   DuPont did a demonstration of Halon safety one time. They put a guy in a phone booth, charged with 5% Halon 1301. He remained happily alive and breathing while trying to light a Bic. The Bic wouldn't light, but he remained conscious.
As that demonstrated, Halo does not put out a fire by displacing O2. It works by chemically disrupting the combustion.
It is a common myth that Halon "drives all the oxygen out". It does not. In fact, there doesn't seem to be a single case of Halon systems killing anyone.

This myth that "they drive all the oxygen out and kill people" is a common one that they try to fight. It does not, and these are some of the best fire suppression systems in the world. They bang their heads because no matter how much they try to explain it, you got upper management types that just will not listen and refuse to believe it won't asphyxiate people.

I saw one young woman the other day, with a dude, hanging by the doggo park - transients - haven't seen them before or since. The girl was attractive, and still looked decent, but the dude was a literally raging fuckhead - shouting and bitching at her. Probably abusive.
But, yes...although there are about three regular dudes who are straight-up crackheads. Most of the girls in that situation look terrible. Today's girl didn't look too bad, but she was rough.

Just like that DuPont video, you can walk around in a chamber containing them, breath and be just fine, but you can't strike a match or get anything to burn.

Hard to ignore that. Had to fork it over. I pray she was blessed, and didn't squander it. As I would have, back in the day.

I had a friend who was in the Army, a FIST officer, who also ran some SPA M109 artillery. They were on the firing line one day, firing the 155's in sequence, and then one of the guns didn't fire, the hatches flew open and the crew just SCATTED!!  Bad 155 round.  He and his platoon sergeant went into the M109 and were talking about who was going to open the breech. He finally did, and they got the dud round out. He was scared shitless doing that, because it could have fired when they opened the breech.

293    Re safety rules and fire suppression/protection. Common sense should inform one that if there is fire, then one needs is now in an entirely different regime of safety than is normal.
Case in point. Fire pumps. Electrical protection for such pumps had a minimum fuse/overload protection required to handle locked-rotor current of the motor continuously. What, that would let an overloaded, stalled seized motor burn up and perhaps start a fire!
Well, if there already is a fire, you want that fire pump to run and pump whatever water it can. You don't care if the thing stalls and fails. There is already a fire.

They all have impressive winter wear, often nicer than mine, including good boots and hats and mittens. They work a corner and then pass out once they have enough for a snort. They walk right up to your car in the parking lot at the grocery store and wait for you to get out so they can look you in the eye.

300 Had one dud in the M1 carbine last week - tried the round again, no joy.  Dimple on the primer, not sure what happened.  Will disassemble it and re-use the components, minus the primer of course.  But even that little issue changes one's focus, there's an intense focus on clearing things up, a little bit of tension.

Can't imagine that situation with the gun in an M109.

Only duds I've ever had with reloads have been in the 30 carbine.  I think the primers don't seat fully - but those fire on second strike (first strike just fully seats the primer).  Tight primer pockets on some Lake City brass (never used prior to my loading it) might also explain it, prevents primers from fully seating.

To be fair to the Holy Spirit, I was paraphrasing - but, His voice is usually clear, understandable, and in language to which I relate. I can ignore it, or discount it, but I can't claim I didn't hear or understand it. God, when he speaks - at least to me - doesn't do so with trumpets and fanfare and scary angels that have to say, "Fear not!".

313    Hmmph. It seems these FM-200 and Novec 1230 agents would be ideal for data centers, and that's one of their main uses. No water damage, and drying out to worry about. The only downside seems to be cost -- they are pretty expensive.
And in reading, there are inert gas fire suppression systems being used in datacenters. And these indeed displace the oxygen and would be an asphyxiation hazard for anyone. But yet they are used, and legal. I'm sure there are all sorts of rules and protocols, but they are indeed used in big datacenter applications.

This is typically my philosophy as well. This morning was different. Usually, if I have the doggo, they don't even approach. In fact, she will bark and warn me, and they run away. But doggo is one of the best-behaved, well-trained dog down here. Gentle, but protective. Decent people are allowed to approach, pet, and love. She is a good judge of character.

The doggo approved of this one. And God. I think the two talk amongst themselves, and then decide what I need to do.

Saw that Galaxy Quest, complete, was online and free. Watched the bit about finding the byrellium sphere that ends with the Commander saying, "Let's do that!" One of so many great lines.

On a lark, I searched YT on My Cousin Vinnie. Saw a clip where "Ms. Vito" flummoxes the prosecutor by displaying her impressive knowledge.

Then, in the YT sidebar, I see the entire movie is online and free. Milady and I cheated and picked it up at the beginning of the prosecutor's case, and watched to the end. Such a great flick.

Also, in the YT sidebar, I saw that The Mask is available, for purchase or rent. Really? Galaxy Quest and My Cousin Vinnie are free, but they want me to pay to watch The Mask? This does not speak well of humanity.

Kinda handy to not have to use the [ i ] tags now. But I just figured out that the Preview refreshes the page, so unless I note the last comment number, I lose my place. But we haz colours!

332    It seems to me the only reason not to use one of these "clean agent" gas fire suppression systems is cost. You look at the cost of the system vs the risk and cost of a fire to your equipment. You prefer the latter.
And I can see how this might be what tends to perpetuate the myths that these systems are dangerous. You're doing a cold hard risk vs cost calculation. You don't want to say, I'll just go with the sprinkler systems 'cause it's much cheaper. If it has to activate, then it will cause a lot of problems for my customers. Damage to data, downtime, etc. But I'll take that risk.       But if you can tell yourself, hey those clean agent systems are dangerous, man, that allows one to justify it in a much more noble manner.

Podravka.  Gonna look online for that.  Though there is a Persian store here that has an extensive southeast European product selection (why, I'm not sure).  Maybe they'll have podravka.  I've been doing European classics this "winter" - pollo al limone (fantastic), next is jaegerschnitzel, and goulash would be a nice way to round that out (and give me chicken, pork, and beef dishes).

341 Hmmm.  Podravka is a major Croatian food company, and all I get is info related to their products, but no specific item or seasoning with the name.  Miklos, are those other "secret" ingredients available in the US?  Or could just get them from Europe.  Got a nice Austrian army surplus fleece from Finland recently, got here very quickly.

If I get some seasoning from Croatia, it will be the second Croatian product in the house, the first being my XD9 sem-auto pistol, marketed under the "Springfield Armory" name.

342    Inert gases (argon, etc) are used in welding a lot. In the old days, sometimes steel gas(oline) tanks would spring leaks. Welding a gas tank is a dangerous thing, cause the fumes inside (which are hard to evacuate) can blow up in your face. One trick was to fill them with water, but that can mess up your welding (cool things down too fast, basically).
One clever trick that was used was to pump argon or other inert gases used for welding in and then weld away.

If it is Hungarian, it is sweet (more than Spat). Hungarians produced for the USSR and GDR  at the time, and they wanted sweet red wine. Unless corked, probably good as a dessert wine.

346 Argon is great in wine preservation.  The good systems allow one to open a serious bottle, yet not finish it at that sitting, and have it later with minimal decline in quality.  There was a wine bar in Tokyo, I couldn't believe the kinds of wine they were serving by the glass.  Not possible without a good argon system.

349 There were some Hungarian university students in our train car on one segment of our train trip around the western USSR.  They of course were stoked to hang out with Americans for a while.  We liked their food, which was a tasty break from our months of Soviet fare.*  They had a spicy seasoned ketchup of some kind, I recall that on the salty Soviet cheese on good fresh Russian black bread.

Fuck Alberta. My wife is from there, and she always refers to it as "Canada's Texas", but they just locked down AGAIN, for no real reason that I can see. My oldest son, Big, is in Calgary, trying his damndest to get his life on track, and folks like AoP have been a big help. He works as a cook, and he got a really good job about 6 weeks ago, everything was finally coming together for him. For the first time in oh, maybe 5 years, he was self supporting. And now, because of the lockdown, he's laid off again. I swear to fucking Og that I'm ready to scream at the sky over this. And Alberta has a supposedly "conservative" government too. Fuck those assholes up the ass with a rusty chainsaw. Sideways. How can I, as a father, teach him how to be an adult if they keep ripping the rug out from under him every time he makes even the tiniest progress towards being one? 393   Again, Halon (and modern similar fire suppression gases) don't work by displacing oxygen, they work by chemically interfering with the combustion process. Here's that DuPont demonstration video with the guy in the booth:
https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=NrP5-E9jmas

You see him in a booth, breathing and getting along just fine, with Halon gas at the required concentration of 5%. He's doing just fine, but the flame from a lighter goes out immediately.
The reason Halon was banned was because it was an ozone depleting gas, like Freon-12 and the like.
Halon and its modern equivalents are non-toxic, do not deplete oxygen, and are the best fire suppression method to date.

Of course, "ozone depletion" was bullshit, and always will be. If the so-called "ozone-depleting gases" are mainly released at mid latitudes, why does the "ozone hole" occur only over Antarctica in the Southern hemisphere winter? Maybe because the local insolation is too weak, and at too low an angle to create much ozone at high southern latitudes, ya think?

The only real risk with chlorinated/fluorinated hydrocarbons as fire suppressants is that in sufficiently hot fires, they can break down, and release phosgene, CoCl2 as a combustion product. That stuff will kill you dead. I have made it, inadvertently, by spraying chlorinated brake cleaner into a running engine. Bad juju.

425 Why do certain retarded nurses feel the need to come in every hour at night to wake me up. Do they not know your body heals when you sleep? It's the obese fatties with an attitude as well.  You should be able to sleep with your gun under your pillow for protection. Shit in hospitals has changed the last decade.

426 I'm on day 8 (or 9?) of kale salads (+ a lot of other stuff in it)  I'm addicted!   It's amazing how my cravings for sweets are gone.

427 Breakfast: an ounce of Brandy de Jerez, cigarette, a pint of light-roast coffee, beef or lamb steak, bread fried in goose fat, greens salad or a couple figs, a chink of dark chocolate... Consuela, in her bathing costume, dripping water from the Med.

431 Had wisdom teeth out while in USAF, had to check into Hospital the afternoon before but was let out to do whatever I wanted the rest of afternoon but had to come back by certain time. Spent night there and was woken up seemingly every hour for vitals check, they operated very early next morning.

Got to get rolling, very close still for work and probably last day there.

441 Good morning.
You know how when you put the word "social" before a word it negates it.  Lets make a list.  So far I have Social Justice, Social Security, Social Studies. Social Science, Social Equity, and (you will love this one) Social Hygiene (that's what Sex Ed. was called in California public schools in 1967).

*thinks for a second, goes to book shelf*

Yep. 'Racial Hygiene'. A book for a class in college about the use of 'science' to prop up the Nazi's racial 'theories.' Politicization of science anyone?

Thanks for the ONT, btw. Did not mean to go full Godwin right after waking up, but anything paired with 'hygiene' except 'good' and 'bad' always makes me think of that book for some reason.

I aver that with Biden's comment on the 2nd Amendment, as stupid as it is, the US of A is over.  Because there is no agreeing to becoming a Fascist, Kleptocracy with Oligarchical and Totalitarian tendencies.

And they Hate cultural Americans.  Them over us. And that is not my thing.

If it works, why not? BBQ sauce, Worcestershire, relish on a hot dog all add a touch of sweetness.

Posted by: fluffy goes retro at April 09, 2021 06:28 AM (UnQlg)

464 I love cabbage rolls.  But the "getting the leaves off intact" thing is a chore.  I make "Deconstructed cabbage rolls."  I cut up the cabbage.  Parboil it. Drain it and put it in a casserole dish.   Mix the meat and rice and seasoning and roll out to fit the casserole dish.  Place the meat/rice on the cabbage.  Pour the sauce on top and spread out.  The bake.  Tastes just like cabbage rolls but without the work.

Posted by: JAS, AoSHQ addict at April 09, 2021 06:28 AM (xopIz)

465 JAS, I suspect that cabbage rolls were invented by people without multiple baking dishes.

469 From my little slice of Polish land in South Bend IN we pronounced them gawompkee. Soft a and hard o. No raisins but the women folk did canned tomatoes and a sweet and sour sauce, vinegar and sugar based. Our versions of traditional Polish always varied from what you found elsewhere. No sauerkraut as a staple, we had sweet and sour cabbage.
