— Gabriel Malor This sounds familiar...
The relentlessly rising cost of health insurance is prompting some small Massachusetts companies to drop coverage for their workers and encourage them to sign up for state-subsidized care instead, a trend that, some analysts say, could eventually weigh heavily on the stateÂ’s already-stressed budget.[...]
“They are giving up out of frustration,’’ Fields said of the employers. “Most of them are very compassionate but they simply can’t afford health insurance any more.’’
Precisely how many small businesses have recently given up offering insurance is hard to pinpoint. The Office of Labor and Workforce Development said the most recent quarterly insurance data collected from small companies has not been compiled.
State officials said they have not seen convincing evidence that there is a trend. There has not been an unusually large spike in enrollment in Commonwealth Care, the subsidized insurance program, according to spokesman Richard Powers. And in any case, Dr. JudyAnn Bigby, secretary of health and human services, said the administration budgeted for higher health care spending because it anticipated that there would be growing numbers of long-term unemployed residents who would be signing up for coverage.
Let me rephrase that last paragraph:
State officials say there's no trend, but haven't seen the most recent quarter's data. In any case, the state has already decided it will spend more taxpayer money on healthcare this year, so, who cares, right? Right?

and Palin wasn't alone. A lot of GOP leaders were loudly and effectively explaining why this bill was a bad idea. Gingrich, Paul Ryan, several others. I think Palin had great impact, but I'm a Palin fanboy... several took part in this fight and showed leadership and balls.
Mitt Romney showed us what he was made of too when he didn't do anything to help the good fight on this. Some would say he was smart to duck out. I agree... but this is a fight he will be 'smart' to continue to avoid as much as he can.
Just one thing to consider. We should focus on 2010, but we should also pay attention to who lets us down and if they can lead in the future. This entitlement alone makes it very tough to ever save our country from insolvency. It must be repealed.

this is what I mentioned earlier today.
The employers are doing exactly what the socialists want them to do: drop employee coverage and tell them to enroll in the state's insurance plan.
By design this is how we're moving to single-payer health insurance.

Of course this is what they knew would happen, and businesses are acting rationally as they look at what this will do to their costs. The way it is set up Precident Toonces and the dhimmicraps can howl about 'evil business' dumping their employees health coverage. The sad part is that there is a pretty healthy portion of the 52% who will nod their head in agreement and join in on the howling. We are well and truly fucked. Just passing this legislation has opened a Pandoras box of bad that simply cannot be put away or dismissed.

No, it doesn't matter. Businesses are in business to....make money. This sort of nonsense is not helping. Regardless of who is paying their "fair share", somebody, somewhere is getting a pretty sweet ride. And every body knows how national HCR is going to shake out once it gets rolling. This isn't rocket surgery.
Which, I guess, is the point. Forward. to single payer! And always remember who the former governor of Massachuesetts was who signed this disaster into law and isn't about to apologize for it. Rrrrrrr.....Romney.

Despite the lies/promises by Obama & Pelosi, the costs of private insurance were never supposed to come down -- they were supposed to keep going up.
This is how the private insurance sector will be run out of business. The "government option" will be cheaper and will soon be the only, um, option.

Yeah, we'll get through it with some pain. Our country from time to time acts like a drunk who gets close to the edge of self destruction, get's scared and pulls itself back. Part of that is the peoples ability to recognize where we are going and change course. The other part is that the financial markets see where we're headed and shut off the tap, they quit investing and force change.

speaking of oil leaks...
While they have the well capped, why don't the CAP THE FRIKKIN' CAP to make it more permanent?
And also, why don't they just fix the well and, you know, collect the oil from it so I can put gas in me car?

I submit the value of the gov't option will out in practice. Much like how buying the least expensive paint, rollers, and brushes costs you much much more in 2nd and 3rd coats and redo time than buying decent quality materials.

Mitt Romney regarding MassHealth: "I like mandates"
And were I still governor, I'd mandate a single, money-saving, state-run office supply store. Staples would be a catchy name.

In my fantasy, this will blow up in the faces of the progs, causing a collapse of employer provided health insurance that the gubmint will not be able to cover. Thus putting health care / insurance back to a transaction between individual consumers and providers, affected by normal market forces.
I also keep dipping bugs in toxic waste and then letting them bite me in the hopes of attaining superpowers.

The only problem with the latter is that the "free market" advocates, those wonderful capitalists who are doing just fine during our current economic collapse, also think employers should be allowed, no, encouraged to pay wages no higher than they have to. After all, if we're going to compete with China, patriotic Americans should take whatever pittance the bosses throw their way and STFU. Just ask Ayn Rand.
And the unemployed? Those slackers can't get sick while sitting home in front of their big-screen TVs, can they? They don't need no stinkin' insurance!
Sadly, somewhere between the communist control freaks of D.C. and the nostalgic-for-the-days-of-child-labor "conservative" crowd, a middle way has to be found. To avoid the need for some kind of government mandate, business must be freed from artificial controls that make it impossible for them to make profits, even as they must acknowledge (in a tangible way) that said profits come from the work of productive people.
Building up stock values is only important when the beneficiaries include those who actually work, not just the paper-shufflers.
The best way to keep government off the backs of business is for the business leaders to get their minds right. That means sharing the wealth with those who earn it. That also makes it possible for said people to afford their own health insurance.
It also means running the current crop of traitors out of D.C., starting with terminally brain-dead fuckweasels on the order of Bahney Fwank, Osama Obama, Hairy Reid, and Nanzi Pelosi.

So what's your answer? The Ayn Rand "let the weak die, and let the fires that consume their bodies shine a light on my Aryan Supermen" approach?
Responsibility is a two-way street (something neither government nor the free-marketeers understand), and there are times when the pat theoretical answer doesn't apply.

A friend from MA whose father is in hospice has been traveling between here (CT) and there. She's a chef and injured her arm to an extent where she could not perform her typically chefly duties without surgery.
Enter CommieCare (nee RomneyCare - now ObamaCare).
While recovering from the initial injury and waiting for a surgery date, she was forced to leave her job: unemployed. While unemployed, MA records showed that she dropped her insurance, but because they use prior year's tax returns to determine your "obligation" to purchase insurance, she was fined $1000 for not carrying the State-mandated policy. While unemployed.
She applied for State-funded CommieCare. Denied (per prior year's income).
She secured interim employment (while waiting for CommieCare bureaucrats to schedule her required surgery) but had to pay her own premiums (on a reduced, underemployment salary).
Surgery was finally performed, but of course the procedure was completely botched, leaving her with only partial use of her dominant arm and looking at a future where she could no longer pursue her career as a chef.
Once again unemployed, she relocates to CT to care for her dying father, taking a job as kitchen help. Mere months after the move she receives another letter/fine of $1000 from MA because she is not maintaining the State-mandated health insurance.
Folks, this is your future under ObamaCare.

He did nothing to help the cause during the debate. In fact, he's kinda helped the democrats rhetorically on a few points.
So he's got no chance. No one thinks he will fight to repeal Obamacare, least of all Romney himself.
So his supporters, scorched earth so-called pragmatics (Trent Lott Pragmatics who want to win, but don't actually want to use that win to limit government), are going to trash the living hell out of Palin for being a 'quitter', to use Drew M's favorite word when she's brought up. They will trash her as less than a serious human. They will say she can't speak for more than 15 seconds when she really was among the most sophisticated and effective speakers on Obamacare (to be a good speaker, you have to connect to the people, so maybe you can't sound like John Kerry all the time). They will claim this is OK, because they are trying to get us this 'electable' guy, Romney, who folds like a paper table.
There is no benefit to Romney's followers bashing others. Romney just can't win.
