— Ace Just this slug and nothing more as of yet.
CUS says he's polling at around 30% approval.
I guess The Machine needs a different frontman.
Points and Figures looks back upon the lamentable Daley rule, and tosses out a horrible name for successor: Rahm Emmanuel.

In other news:
LONDON (Reuters) – A giant bale of hay has killed a founding member of the Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) band after it tumbled down a hill and crashed into his van.
Cellist Mike Edwards, 62, died after the 600 kg (1,323 lb) bale rolled down a steep field in Devon, southern England, smashed through a hedge and careered on to the road.
He died instantly in the freak accident on Friday afternoon.

The city hasn't been the same since Eugene Sawyer assumed the reins in a midnight coup.

Daley Sr. would have no place in modern Democrat Party. Hell, he was barely welcome in the 70s. Getting kicked out of the 72 convention and replaced with Jesse Jackson. Daley Jr on the other hand is a brainless little toad who blindly follows the liberal line.

Get your popcorn, this could be interesting. Neither one of the Mayors Daley every groomed a successor. When Mayor Daley I died in office of a heart attack, it was a free-for-all. Then when eventual successor Mayor Washington died in office of a heart attack, it was a free-for-all.
This Mayor Daley has not indicated any sort of successor. Which means the free-for-all begins today. The city is a non-melting pot of various interest groups, with the Jesse Jacksons competing with the Luis Guitterezs competing with the Alderman Dick Mells of the world. (Dick Mell is Blago's father in law, the guy who got Blago into politics.)
Mayor Daley's accomplishments? A clean and vibrant city, beautiful public spaces, a terrific downtown. His non-accomplishments? High crime & lousy schools. And his biggest gaffe - turning the city's parking meters into a tax farm, by selling off the parking meter revenue to JP Morgan for 75 years, for an upfront payment of a billion dollars. Which has already been spent.

LOL, when I was at "A" School in 1970 me and another guy took the train into Chicago and then a bus to the museum of science and industry.
It looked pretty bad even then.
BTW, if any of you Morons are ever in Chicago that museum is a cool visit. We spent about 4 hours there and didn't get to see half of it.

The Shedd Aquarium is also very cool. I love visiting Chicago. They have a great marathon too. I would never want to live there, though.

Monty & Fresh Air - The waste & graft & flagrant spendthriftiness boggles the mind, and I would not try and sugar coat that. I was looking at the city as if I had parachuted in, and wanted a look around. Downtown is beautiful.
Think about other major American cities. Detroit? Cleveland? Miami? NYC? Los Angeles? All in various states of filth or outright blight.
I remember the downward spiral the city was in once upon a time, and I was glad to see it stopped. But.....the parking meter deal is just one of many outsourcings that is costing more than keeping it in-house. Plus it has destroyed local mom & pop businesses in the process because now the street parking is gone. The administration is pushing for more big box stores (Wal-Mart) to replace the mom & pops, and imho that's a disaster. The city spends money to acquire land, forms TIF districts so that tax revenue that should go to local schools & whatnot is taken away, and then the land goes to the big box store to develop.
And the crime that's rampant on the south & west sides isn't staying there, the north side can't stay safe forever with the police force down almost 2,000 officers.

Given the history of voting in Chicago, I'd think it would be very appropriate for someone representing the dead to win the office.

Some politicians realize that they can't get re-elected ...
Sticking a gun up someone's ass doesn't work so well when that "someone' has a gun ...

Yeah, that's the one I mean--it's in The Field House that was built for the Chicago World's Fair. Great book on all that went into what went on to get everything designed and built for the World's Fair juxtaposed onto a great story about America's first serial killer is "The Devil in White City" by Erik Larson.

In the 1970s, NYC lost 10.4% of its population.
In the 1990s, NYC gained 9.4% of population.

I will say this about Daley -- the South Side is *much* *much* safer than it used to be in the '80s and early '90s, from Hyde Park on down all the way even to Calumet Heights, which ain't no disco but isn't the slough of despair it once was either. Seriously, the improvement in quality of life wasn't just felt in the white parts of town. Hyde Park alone has been revolutionized, and it wasn't the University of Chicago's doing, it was Daley's.

O/T, but it is Illinois politics:
If Mark Kirk wants to win the "Obama" US Senate seat in Illinois, he needs to up his game.
A good starting point would be to find the film clip of Obama talking about his role as a (honorary?) campaign manager for Blago. Obama even says something to the effect of "you betcha" when asked if this is good for Illinois. The interview was on Chicago Tonight--saw the clip a coupla years ago--it's out there but I don't have the google-fu to find it...
Also, Kirk should explain that his Cap-n-Trade vote, while tailored to the north-shore enviros is certainly NOT what is needed for the rest of Illinois and the country.
Posted by: TheThinMan at September 07, 2010 01:14 PM (W3XUk)
Not necessarily. If the example of Harold Washington's first term as mayor hold true, then the Daley Machine could severely hamstring any of Jesse Jr's attempts to get too cute in that job.
Jesse Jr. has his own problems on top of that. If Blago looks like he's going up the river, he could take Jesse Jr. with him over Obama's Senate seat.

City workers
Posted by: TheQuietMan at September 07, 2010 03:51 PM (Sz+Le)
I agree. Daley did a lot of good in the beginning and revitalized a number of areas of the city. But then he was pro-business and safety. In the last few years he's gone off the rails with all of this liberal shit that would have his father spinning in his grave. The cops hate him (at least the ones I know do) and business isn't coming into the city any more and his idiot solution is more taxes. Plus crime is getting out of hand in certain areas and he refuses to address it.

There is no conservative base -- tiny or otherwise -- in Chicago. The free-market types, traditional republicans, etc., all exist. But the businesses in the city have simply made the deal to pay off the liberal/city worker base in the city, and not make waves, in a kind of partnership. This serves in keeping the sizable Leftard population out of power. Unlike New York, there is no gentlemanly Republican society that has clout in the city -- the city workers and unions have much more say here than in, say, New York. It's more like Boston or Philadelphia in the sense of permanent Blue.
If Rev. Wright ran for mayor he'd get near a sizable majority just by default. There is that Plfager/Wright contingency -- the afore-mentioned Leftards -- that are strong here. Thankfully, not as strong as, say, Los Angeles.
I think the odds-on favorite is that alderman who is a bit of a law-and-order type who is championing the firemen/police. I forget his name, but he'll be up and coming.
I can't see Rahm Emmanual becoming mayor. Not because he's too much of a bastard -- but he seems like a bastard without redeeming personal characteristics, and no line of "favors" that people owe him. Whatever clout he had got thrown in the hole with Tony Rezco.
My $.02 as a Chicagoan, if anyone cares.

I'm not so sentimental.
I remember getting lost on Chicago's southside as a teenager, driving my dad's car.
My strategy was to head west and get on the freeway. I had to drive miles and miles parallel before I hit an on-ramp and what a desolate freak-show of poverty I saw, as I drove.
Literally, people living under the shade of a towering, pulsing artery of commerce that had no connection to their almost bucolic backwater existence.
Later, I asked my dad (who knows his driving) about this anomaly and he explained, that before I was ever born, Mayor Daley made it so that all of the black people, living on the south side should have limited or no access to transportation.
"It's very nice of you to offer your city friends a lift home and you were smart when you got lost, to head west and search for a freeway but now you know that that won't work on the south side of the city. So, next time you need to go near Hyde Park just get on Lakeshore Drive and hit it. The worst that could happen is you'll end up in Indiana."
"Okay Dad. You're right. I always thought that Indiana was creepy and to be avoided at all costs but there are parts of Chicago that are like another goddamned planet!"
