Medium-Good News from Michigan
— Dave in Texas

Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick taken down in Democrat primary.

Her loss is described as another "anti-incumbent" smackdown, combined with a certain name recognition that may or may not have become recently unpopular. Take a look at the incumbents mentioned though and see if you can find the little funny:

It should be Arlen Spector, (F) for FAIL!!!

The only lament I have about Cheeks Kilpatrick is that she won't be going to join her son AND Dingell's wife in prison.   Seriously, is there a black politician anywhere in this country who *Isn't* crooked?

I'm serious, give me a name of someone you think deserves the public's confidence.   Any state, any office.

16 Sorry to go off topic so early but they were discussing this DROP thing in philly and an article in one of the papers and people from all over the country were calling.  Who knew that you could retire as a teacher and then come back the next day making 15% less than you were making, collecting your pension and still working?   The callers knew and they were mostly people from other unions who were really angry.  apparently this DROP program is another example of all the crap that people just don't know about but will eventually impact all of us.

In my district, 30 year-old Justin Amash, won the primary to replace Rep. Vern Ehlers (R).

Ehlers was extremely intelligent, but he was an old-school Republican.  Non-confrontational, moderate, etc.

Amash is also extremely intelligent (BA in Economics at U of M; Law Degree from U of M), but he's also extremely conservative.  Like Coburn/Demint conservative.

Amash ran a fantastic campaign, emphasizing the fact that he has NEVER missed a vote as a state legislator and that he posts detailed explanations of each and every vote on his website.  I urge conservatives around the country to look at this guy's website and read about his campaign.  He CRUSHED two establishment favorites (Steve Heacock and Bill Hardiman) and appealed heavily to young voters.

I hope that what just happened with Amash is happening all around the country.  In my opinion, the old guard of the GOP have to be destroyed and replaced if we want to see any type of return to limited government.

He's conservative, transparent (in the real sense of the word), and energized.  He doesn't have the rhetorical skills of Michigan's only current noteworthy conservative, Thaddeus McCotter, but Amash makes up for that in the way he votes:  He's actually a principled, consistent conservative - which sets him apart from McCotter, too.

Actually, he got a pretty sweet deal. According to the WSJ, the Washington Post company still bears responsibility for all retirement benefits for all Newsweek employees, and assumes responsibility for all Newsweek employees that are laid off due to the change in ownership.

Me, I welcome Newsweek's transformation into an organ of the Democratic Party. At least now it's official.

No, Clarke isn't in the Conyers/Crockett mold, even though, yes, he was Conyers' chief of staff for a while.  He has a pretty interesting life story, with a Bengali father who died when Clarke was a child and a mother who worked as a crossing guard, managing to her son a scholarship from the DIA as a third grader.

He's a decent, reform-minded kind of guy whose legislative focus has been auto insurance rates.  During a radio interview this morning, he mentioned the mounting national debt as an example of Kilpatrick being out of touch with the concerns of her constituents.

McCotter's speeches give me the impression of the old-timey political speakers at county fairs who relied on fire, brimstone, and a rich, monotonous baritone voice to bore their constituency into voting for him.

I don't like McCotter.  He pisses me right the f#ck off, actually.  I'll take him - we need as many Rs as we can get, especially in Michigan.  But that f#cker preaches conservatism - and voted for the union bailouts.  Two things wrong here in my world: Duplicity (he advocates conservatism and then hands government money to the unions), and enabling unions, which are the bane of this society's existence.  I realize what his district is and that to keep his job, he probably had to vote for the union bailout, but he could have been honest about it.  Had he handled that situation with integrity, at least I'd only be disappointed in him for one thing.  He can stay hidden for all I care at this point.

In the 9th congressional district of Illinois, currently represented by Jan Schakowsky (D), a fresh young conservative jewish republican is running against her.

His name is Joel Pollack (website is pollack for congress dot com - did I mention I don't like the tiny url thing 'cause it gives me grief?)

If you think back to a couple of years ago, Barney Frank was at an event in Boston, making excuses for why he wasn't to blame for the financial crises.  A Harvard law student in the audience challenged him and made him look like a fool.  That law student is Joel Pollack, he's come home to Illinois to run against and hopefully beat Nancy Pelosi's best friend, Jan Schakowsky.

The video of the Barney Frank takedown is up on YouTube, it's great.  Fox had him on afterwards to talk about it further, which is also up there.

I used to think that Harold Ford was a Dem I could live with. He did a pretty good job of making all of the right centrist noises when he was a Rep from Tennessee. But he's the product of a corrupt political family, and he was talking a lot like a leftist when he was mulling a challenge to Gillibrand in NY.

90 There are some.

Posted by: Vic at August 04, 2010 08:30 AM (/jbAw)

91 Justin Amash beat Bill Hardiman, a veteran state legislator, and Steve Heacock, a buddy of Vern Ehlers and an affiliate of west Michigan's Republican elite.  Amash should easily win this seat.

Bill Huzeinga pulled it out to replace Pete Hoekstra, beating state senator Wayne Kuipers and former u of m star Jay Riersma.  He should easily win this seat.

Longtime politician Tim Walberg beat Marine Brian Rooney for a rematch with Mark Schauer in what should be a tight battle.

It looks like the Republicans vying to replace Bart Stupak will be going to a recount, with the final count last night giving Dan Benishek a very close win over state sen. Jason Allen.

Republican Fred Upton and Democrat Sander Levin easily beat back primary challenges.

For the Dems in the D, state sen Hansen Clarke took out Carolyn Kilpatrick, and will win the general election.  I don't agree with Clarke on many things, but he's good guy with integrity, thought good state dems tend to lose their way when they get to Congress.

This is a race thats gone under the radar, but Dr. Rob Steele will be taking on King John the Second in my home district.  It'll be an uphill battle, but Steele is actually campaigning unlike most republicans who run in this district just to have a name on the ballot.

For governor, bussinessman Rick Snyder will be taking on Lansing mayor Virg Bernero.  Snyder is still a bit of a wildcard, which might have helped him in this race where he faced several established politicians, but as long as he doesn't screw up, he should beat Virg, whos been relying exclusively on the democratic base in a state thats kind of sick of the democrats.

Exactly.I love Taranto's Best of the Web tag for him.

Specter (R2D2, Pa.)...

How can you beat that?  It clearly shows his affiliation(s).

93 @10 Alan West in FL comes to mind. No, skin color has nothing whatsoever to do with proclivity towards breaking the law. Nor does religion, gender ... I'd suggest a quick apology to the real class acts out there. I'd vote for Col West for prez, he has the right stuff. If you pointed out that its hard to find an honest dumbocrat, I could believe this. But then politicians in general are seduced by their power. Or possibly the power is what encourages the losers like C-K to vie for it. I am glad she is gone. Its a shame we can't get Conyers to retire as well. Him Dingle, and the other Levin are real winners. /not On the happy side, Rick the nerd won for governor. He is a good guy, and we need to get him over the finish line.

95 The bad news in Michigan:  The Demonrats stole the GOP primary by pimping Ricky Snyder - a man that actively campaigned for Democrats to vote for him.  Ricky isn't at all different from his challenger, Virg Bernero.  So much so, that the liberal Michigan League of Conservation Voters endorsed BOTH Snyder and Bernero.

Now Michiganders have a Soviet-style "choice" in November, and a guaranteed 4 more years of Jennifer Granholm.
