— Ace They did another one to open the show, but I didn't find it funny, or accurate. It featured Barack Obama, at the SOTU, lambasting Martha/Marcia Coakley as the worst Democratic candidate in history, but that wasn't really the problem in Massachusetts, was it?
Liberals want to believe that was the only problem here. But the problem was Barack Obama's socialist program for America. Leftists never admit the message was rejected; it's only the messenger.
Here's a so-so sketch (pretty much their standard of excellence) on Scott Brown. Note the theme continues -- the problem in Massachusetts wasn't Obama's program. No, the problem for the left was that Scott Brown was hot.

You know, if Obama would just come out, get on TV, and make some more speeches explaining what it is he wants to do, I think most people would change their minds.
Either that, or if they would just re-name all the things that people are against. Then people wouldn't know they were against them.

SNL hasn't been funny since the original crew left a long time ago. At that time maybe 25% of their jokes were political and they were mostly just pratfalls making fun of Ford falling down.
Now, as of the last time I watched it, 75% was political and ALL left leaning crap. And the biggest sin of all....not funny.

Why do cranky conservatives always bitch about SNL? Sometimes it's funny, sometimes it isn't. For the most part the political stuff is as funny as it's ever been. I mean, you can't get any funnier that that "do sex to me" sketch earlier this year (in fact, that entire show was comedy gold, especially Al Gore getting pwned on "What Up With That?".) I thought this Scott Brown sketch was hilarious. Casting the gorgeous Jon Hamm as Brown was a no-brainer.

They don't get official marching orders as much as the writers and "talent" they pull from tend to be Kos Kids.
About the only one who tends to sling it at Dems wholeheartedly is Jim Downey, who is the token Republican on staff. He's the one who did the skit about the bank bailouts who kept name-dropping Soros as the owner of the Dem party and referred to a few top Dem donors as "people who need to be shot" via the on-screen chyrons.

SNL is sporadically funny. Some andy sanberg sketches are good. Their political humor normally isn't that good anymore. Althought their Clinton and Bush 41 sketches used to be pretty good. Also they had that opening with Obama and the Chinese Premier that was funny a few weeks ago. I don't watch the show anymore but occasionally see clips when hot air posts them
Also that Reagan mastermind sketch was one of the best ever.

Ace--Think you're totally misinterpreting the SOTU sketch. I thought it was pretty clear they were making fun of Obama by having him run down Coakley in an over-the-top manner as the excuse for the Mass. loss without him taking any responsibility for the loss.
I don't think the show is that deep and jokes that well thought out. They've had 2 sketches over the entire year that portray obama in a bad light. The first was from the left, which was that skit where Obama says he didn't accomplish anything. The second being the one with the chinese premier. 2 sketches in 1 year isn't very promising for a show that used to have 1-2 Bush sketches a night over the past 8 years.

Morons.. Here's a skit I saw live.
People like John Kerry get the votes to stay in office, but they donÂ’t have the support of the people. HereÂ’s proof.
See the traffic in the photograph? ItÂ’s heading north on Route 1 in Saugus. I was sitting in bumper to bumper traffic on the overpass waiting to loop around onto the highway and merge into that traffic at 1pm when I snapped this shot of the heavy volume caused by a Scott Brown event. It was Scott Brown Traffic.
The Scott Brown Bus Tour – a Thanksgiving for the people of Massachusetts. I went to the 1pm event at Kowloon’s, the big Chinese restaurant on Route 1. Heading south on Route 1, you have to get off just beyond the restaurant, then exit, cross back over the highway, and get on the northbound side before exiting into the parking lot.
I had plans with Lauren Birmingham, the Kowloon PR gal, to have her let me in the back door so I could take a look at what was going on, but when I reached her on her cell phone, she said there was no way to move anywhere. Thousands of locals had shown up to say thank you to Scott as he said thank you to them, and to make matters worse, Barbara Walters was there covering Scott, and was probably trying to make him cry for a prime time special.
John Kerry has been in the U.S. Senate for 25 years, and it’s hard to imagine any regular people showing up to see him. Deval Patrick, a first term “hope and change” governor couldn’t fill a fundraiser last summer with Barack Obama as the guest of honor. Ted Kennedy served very prominently for 47 years, and voters couldn’t wait to turn his seat over to Scott.
This event served to highlight what a ripoff it is for these guys to get elected and stay in forever. It is an attack on the notion of self-rule and democratic ideals that they get into a seat and use all their connections, wealth and influence to keep themselves in it forever. They have robbed us of moments like these in which the people are energized by the cause and effect of the democratic process – the joy of self-rule lost to the influence of special interests and the power of privilege.
Elected officials like to complain about voter apathy and wish publicly for a more engaged electorate. Now we know what to tell them in response – you want to see an election with high turnout? Retire, and open up your seat to the process, and you’ll see some energy.
Just ask Scott.

Timmy,
IÂ’d like to see the RNC or someone file an injunction to STOP an unelected civilian from voting as a Senator in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. It was my understanding that his position was gone the day after election dayÂ… period. If anything, he should be home playing with the kids and no one should be representing Massachusetts citizens until Brown gets there. This is the equivalent of Obama appointing an unelected czar to fill in for missing Senators and cast votes in direct contrast of what the people of that state wish done.

I was in my early/mid teens during those years. I remember it being the highlight of my week watching Saturday Night (it wasn't "SNL" in those days). I loved Bill Murray, Curtain, Radner, Newman & Garret. A while back, I bought the 1st & 2nd seasons because I hadn't seen them in ages. In re-watching it all these years later, the 1st season was SOOO bad. Very stupid. It only started to get better in the 2nd. I was shocked at how un-funny Belushi was (I thought he was hilarious when I was a kid). Same goes for Chase. He always got top dog status back then, but was one of the least funny on that show, imo.

OT, but did anyone read the sidebar item about the guy strapping on a homemade rocket pack in an ill conceived attempt to get a "boost" out of his sledding experience?
Funnier than the Scott Brown sketch.

>>AGAIN! I hit the jackpot because I am one of the lawyers who GETS how stupid OBAMA is and is embarrassed at his continually being touted as a Con Law expert and professor. Judging from his own comments on law, he is clueless and makes those of us who try hard to do well angry to be painted with the same broad brush as him!..Posted by rightzilla..
I will have to agree to his stupidity. First, the man not only refused until recently to acknowledge the other party might have any productive ideas, his concept of reaching-out until he was weakened was just to try to buy off a few for political cover if things went bad later. “Progressives” are chagrined because with big Democrat legislative majorities the leftist agenda should have been barrelled through without any need to consider Republicans for anything. Second, he poses as a centrist rhetorically; his lofty well-spokenness in giving prepared remarks has worn thin with more and more people. The recently late Howard Zinn nailed it when he pointed out the dulcet words will be matched to a mediocre Presidency. Being willing and able to repeat saccharine and leaden sludge in a mellifluous baritone after it is written by the speech staff has less and less significance by the day, when that’s all that is offered, including to people in the center.
Not a ruse; just tokenism and tactical symbolism, and nothing even close to substantive bipartisanship. The promised bipartisanship — lofty and saintly pragmatic nonpartisanship, really — was one of the first of Obama’s many campaign promises to reach an expiration date.

Apart from slapstick, funny like SNL funny, is more interesting, if not funnier in the context of the time. When you watch it later, in the context of our time, the humor may fall flat but the audience at the time may have been hysterical with laughter. From what I have been told, they were on on Saturday night because they were a little risque and cutting edge. Weren't they on with Archie Bunker? The you can hear the flushing of the toilet throughout the house family. And that secret agent guy who used to talk into his shoe and was always saved, of course, by the woman agent but never realized it and she allowed him to think he was all that. Didn't women behave that way with their men, women were just having the women's movement I think but many were still in the "I'm running the show but I let him think he is" mode?

SNL is gay, nothing will ever top Monty Python in terms of comedy gold sketches.
One of these days I'd like to see a Monty Python and the Holy Grail remake where the bunny wabbit tears apart stooges from the Obama administration. That would be the gift that keeps on giving.
CHARRRRGE!!! *bunny tears them apart* RUN AWAY!!!!!

Well, if they think Scott Brown is 'hot' wait until they have to deal with Marco Rubio and "Gunny Pop".
I think this gets the left more than anything right now. Along with the obvious female conservative/republican women in the spotlight right now, they can no longer portray the republican party as old fat racist white men. Anyhow, while extremely funny, it's once again the left minimizing the conservative/republican by sexualizing him/her (saw this, and still do, with Sarah Palin). I mean, they came out with a Palin doll, and now, according to FNC, someone has come out with a Scott Brown dolls ... 3 of them. One as an 'executive', one in jeans and flannel, and the other with fig leaf and six pack to denote his Cosmo Centerfold.
Posted by: Drillanwr at February 01, 2010 11:53 AM (GkYyh)
Does Brown have a cut of the doll profits? Remember when Bo wanted people to pay to post his image and his words? Did he ever accomplish that little deal, being the very public person that he is?

Was Marcia a bad candidate or was she a silent hero doing what she could from the position she found herself in? Ponder that one. She was entrenched in MA politics, you can't convince me that this was a stupid woman. Sure she may have been a spear carrier (noting the cases she obviously screwed up) however, maybe she no longer wanted to carry the spear. Anyway, for someone who is not stupid, there were just way too many stupid moves made.

I believe so Tami. The Dems are up to something and I think you know.
Is tomorrow the 'don't ask, don't tell' vote? Ummmm.
Obama and the Democrats in Congress are to blame. They were given power 14 months ago on Nov 4th, 2008 when they told us to vote for the Hope of Change. What we got instead was the Hoax of Chains. The chains of lost freedom, unemployment, reduced security and an increased national debt greater than the gross domestic product of the world.
Hate. them.

Oh for chrissakes. Get over yourself. It's a freaking comedy show. The host this week is one of the hottest men on the planet. Scott Brown is hot. Should SNL have portrayed Brown hosting a Harvard policy seminar? Would that have been funny?
Some of you folks really need a thicker skin, and a sense of humor.
Posted by: rockmom at February 01, 2010 01:59 PM (w/gVZ)
It seems like liberals have some kind of image issues. Not surprising, seeing as the last guy they tried to pass off as a looker was John "Silky Pony" Edwards. Also know as "that slimy two-Americas guy."
Brown's starting to get the same treatment as Palin. Except Palin got it worse, seeing as she could be attacked from more angles. Ironically, she was attacked for being more of a real feminist than those damn commies at NOW (who really hate women). Still, when you can't attack someone's views, you go after appearance and try to minimize the importance their impact on the voters. It's just like high school all over again. Or Alinsky's rules. Whichever floats your boat.
Oh, and SNL hasn't been funny since the actors stopped being able to complete a skit without cracking up like immature little boys. Yes, I still hold that against Mango boy whats-his-face. I have refused to watch that show since that episode aired.

True enough. But I'm 52 and I thought the dick-in-a-box thing was the funniest thing I've seen in ages. I watch SNL most weeks if I can stay awake. I thought Amy Poehler was way funnier than any of the women that were on SNL back in "my day." I thought Lady Gaga was amazing on the show, as was Rihanna. SNL is the only place I get to see these performers live. The "I'm On A Boat" song was so good it was nominated for a Grammy! People who say the show isn't hip or funny at all anymore are simply showing their age. I watched the episode that opened with the "do sex to me" sketch with my 60-year-old brother and 56-year-old sister and we all laughed our asses off through the entire show. But my 16-year-old also thought it was hilarious.
Posted by: rockmom at February 01, 2010 02:11 PM (w/gVZ)
We only have to wait (3) more years. Once Obama loses in 2012, SNL will be forced to be funny again.
The past 10 years has been all about helping the Democrats regain power(mainly due to the relationship between NBC and the Democratic Party), and right now it is all about Protecting President Affirmative Action. Once he loses in 2012 economics will force them to ditch their poltical slave masters, and Immelt will most likely be a gonner!
Place your bets!
