— Open Blogger Hello fellow morans. I recently purchased an FN 57 pistol. It resides under my pillow patiently waiting for the coming 2nd American revolution or the possible zombie Apocalypse, which ever comes first. My question for the discussion thread is: What weapon do you carry or depend on to protect you and your loved ones from the shit that may soon befall us?

AR15 shooting 68gr BTHP-M rounds, and Sig P226 in .40 S&W - both with plenty of ammo.

My other hand typically carries a potential bribe for the marauding hordes, like my old color GameBoy, my expired Visa card, or a HotPocket. Although I do reserve the right to drop the HotPocket and engage in one last furious round of self-pleasuring before the jackbooted thugs/zombies/census workers break my door down. On my nightstand waiting for some douche-bag to make his last fatal error is my Beretta 96FS in .40 cal.
It's reliable as they come and puts a nice hole in whatever the hell I shoot at it with.
If there is a siege to the castle, or the second Revolution, or zombies, or the shit just hits the fan, I have my Kel-Tec SU-16C in 5.56 mm. Also the trusty Remington 870 Express (Synthetic of course) in 12 gauge for the fun of it all, great for zombies.

I have very small hands and struggle with recoil on most of the handguns I have tried shooting. I'd just like something to kill intruders with; I don't need anything fancy.
My husband refuses to discuss this with me; he says I am such a bitch when my sleep is interrupted that a firearm would not be necessary. This is probably true, but I'd still like to get a gun. I need something that isn't too heavy, or hard to work.
Another question; would it be possible to get a smallish gun, but have some sort of Super Bullet that would make up for the small size of the gun?

Search for the weapon that has the slowest velocity possible, with the largest weight you are comfortable with shooting. Lower weights mean more comfort with the weapon. Slower velocities mean greater impact on the target.

Top PR firm for BP tied to White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel
By: Mark Hemingway
Commentary Staff Writer
05/30/10 2:42 PM EDT
Over at The Next Right, the've pieced together some interesting connections about the White House's ties to British Petroleum, better known as the company currently polluting the Gulf of Mexico. We all know Obama was the biggest recipient of BP's campaign cash in Washington, but it seems BP's ties to the White House run even deeper.
According to The Next Right, PR firm Greenberg Quinlan Rosner "helped BP plan and evaluate its successful re-branding campaign, focusing the company's branding on energy solutions, including the development of solar and other renewable energy sources."
The firm's Stanley Greenberg is married to Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn. There was something of a flap last year when it was pointed out that White house Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel had been living in the couple's Capitol Hill townhouse and resulting in a lot of questions about whether or not this arrangement violated congressional ethical guidelines.
Further, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee paid Greenberg's firm some $500,000 in 2006 and 2008 while Emanuel was living with Greenberg, and Emanuel was even in charge of the DCCC during the 2006 election cycle.
And I'd be willing to bet that BP has paid Greenberg Quinlan Rosner a lot more than that. I doubt I'm the only one who thinks that BP's relationship with the White House might be a little too close for comfort.
BP Aims to Avoid Fresh Restrictions on Drilling
By ELIZABETH WILLIAMSON
(excerpted)
After the spill, the company brought on crisis communicator Hilary Rosen, former Democratic congressional staffer, former chief executive of the Recording Industry Association of America, and a current editor-at-large for HuffingtonPost.com. Ms. Rosen heads the Washington-based office of U.K. communications firm the Brunswick Group. Public records are not yet available on the new Brunswick contract. Ms. Rosen declined to be interviewed on the record.
(excerpted)
Even before the Gulf disaster, BP has faced tough scrutiny from federal regulators, starting in the aftermath of a 2005 explosion that killed 15 workers at a Texas refinery, a 2006 oil spill in Alaska and allegations of safety lapses at a Toledo, Ohio, refinery.
Despite this history of safety problems, BP has made allies of some Democrats and environmentalists with its support for climate-change legislation, which company lobbyists helped write. It is a key member of the United States Climate Action Partnership, which aims to convince businesses that renewable energy and putting a price on industry emissions of heat-trapping gases can be profitable.
Among BP's lobbyists is Tony Podesta, who heads the Podesta Group, a lobbying powerhouse founded by Mr. Podesta and his brother, former Clinton chief of staff John Podesta, who headed President Barack Obama's transition team. John Podesta now leads the Center for American Progress, the liberal think tank whose scholars have presented the White House with ideas like forcing BP to devote its first-quarter profits, or some $5 billion, to a fund for Gulf cleanup. It also has criticized potential BP-related conflicts of interest within the government.
Tony Podesta confirmed Podesta Group was working for BP on the Deepwater Horizon issue, but responded by email that "they have asked us not to talk to press." BP paid the Podesta Group $320,000 a year in 2008 and 2009, and $60,000 this year through March 31, said the Center for Responsive Politics. "We don't talk business, are often on opposite sides of an issue, and still maintain peace at the dinner table," John Podesta said, referring to he and his brother.

If i didn't know any better I'd say you were T-Dub, except with a U.N. fetish instead of a Soviet one.
Look, I don't know where you got the idea that I was "fetishizing" UN troops. I'm just making a cautionary point. I never doubt anyone's bravery or capability in the face of fire because you never know, but it is foolish of any of us to think this is some Hollywood scenario where our various collections of firearms are enough for us to single-handedly fight off a forceful counter-resistance. Even if the entire US military rank and file went AWOL rather than support the Feds, we'd still lack the command and control structure. That's more important to modern military tactics than you may believe. I'm not saying UN troops couldn't be defeated; I'm just saying that a lot of our own people would die in the process.
So, if you want to ignore my point and paint me as some kind of enemy, then fine. Ignore my point, go out on your porch, drink your beer, and fire off your various small caliber weapons at all the inept invaders. You'll probably take out more of them than they take from you. But there's only one of you.
My greater point is that if we're going to envision the scenario posited by the original post, then we should do so completely. Even if the entire populace were unified in such an effort - and they certainly will not be - it would still be an uphill battle.

First of all, I never defended the UN or held them up as some kind of elite force, I just pointed out the fact that if we were to have a major revolutionary event in the US, they would likely be called in to defend the Feds. So, I'm not arguing against you, or ignoring your point. I'm fully aware that there are millions of well-armed citizens that represent a formidable barrier to foreign invasion of any kind. That's a great thing, but it would require a serious commitment by those people. Thus, I'm just trying to point out the big picture, and you're selectively ignoring my bigger point.

The U.N. tries to project force here and its slaughterama, shooting fish in a barrell, end of story.
You know, you argue just like a Democrat lawyer I know, whereas you take a single quote or segment of an argument out of context, build a straw man, and then proceed to flail at it like a piñata.
Let me make this simple, point by point:
You're the one who brought it up and keep pursuing it.
I brought up the warning of such an event, not a championing of it. The fact that you are trying to tar me with stating something I haven't leads me to continue to pursue the argument. I have no problem with disagreement, but I would expect you not to misrepresent what I said.
Google is your friend and as being someone who really likes to have past history and precedent as the foundation of any argument you have failed to bring forth yours after I have brought forth mine.
Red herring, as I never postulated the success of UN forces. And I certainly never acted as their cheerleader. Wasn't it I who first pointed out their despicable record of raping their own flock?
Look I'm not trying to paint you as an enemy, the T-Dub reference was a low blow, I'll admit.
I appreciate that.
I just think you have way too much faith in a foreign and inept military force that would make Barney Fife look like John Rambo instead of good old American ingenuity and resolve.
Again, I never said I had faith in them, I was just warning of the possibility. And given the internationalist nature of the current administration, do you doubt that they'd try it?
The U.N. tries to project force here and its slaughterama, shooting fish in a barrell, end of story.
Again, I largely agree. But some of us would die, too. That should be a known result. What I was advocating in such an event was guerrilla warfare over frontal confrontation. I think the former is preferable, and the latter not at all. Whether superior or not, in a worst case scenario they would have the initial advantage of superior firepower. That could be overcome with proper tactics. But we need to be clear about what we'd face.
Look, I don't think we're really arguing differing positions. I'm just arguing for caution and prior preparation. Even given our intrinsically superior numbers, without coordination, the effect will be localized and limited to triggering events.
So, basically, I'm agreeing with you that I have more faith in our own than in whatever opposition may arise. But without a concerted and planned effort, our path would be quite difficult. In such an imaginary scenario - wherein the US military is not intact, at least domestically - invasion forces would have no difficulty entering major cities (just think about who runs and lives in them), but pushing out into flyover country will be much harder. That's were the real fight happens, and if they can achieve their footholds, then we'd be facing armor, artillery, and air support. I don't like those odds in a pitched battle. But I do like the odds of a coordinated guerrilla campaign.
Maybe I'm more Lee than Jackson or Forrest, but I'd like to think I'm a measured combination of them all, favoring aggressiveness and speed only when the proper positioning has been acheived.

@David Gillies, 451.
.00 buck shot is actually not as effective, generally, as #1 buck shot. The reason is that you're only sacrificing .03 inches of pellet diameter and gaining a few more pellets per load. Consequently, you get a higher hit probability and equal or greater energy transfer to the target. Robert A. Rinker advises as much in Understanding Firearm Ballistics. Mind you, if you've already bought double-oughts and loaded them into your Remington (a fine choice, by the way) there's no need to swap them out. You won't have alot of people eager to jump in front of your shotgun.

Stoeger, AR 15 Match rifle, 45-70 Marlin 1895, Winchester .22, 20 ga single shot K-Mart special, and if there all else fails, SAA .45 revolver.
The CCW gun and the 20 gauge pump are usually the most handy and ready to use. The 1911 .45 clone will make a good shop / truck gun to have handy. The other 24/7 and the XD are for USPSA and 3 gun competitions
The .22 and single shot were the first firearms that I received from my father as a kid. I think the 20 gauge single was $35 from K-Mart in 1977 and is marked S.S. Kresge Company. As much as I like all the other guns I've owned over the years, I really like that quick and lightweight little 20ga. that Dad gave me all those years ago.
Practice. Join a club and shoot in competition. Get training from a good instructor. Learn from the guys with experience. You will perform the way you practice, and you have to think about the responsibility you are taking on when arming yourself.
I know most of my neighbors have weapons, all of my friends have weapons of some kind. I'm happy with that. I watch out for them and they watch out for me. We are 15 to 20 minutes response time for the Sheriff to get to our little town. If there is a problem, we have to handle it until help comes.

I'm also looking over something new: the ALFA. My brother picked up one of the 'Defender' models [the 3.5" barrel] and says it can shoot a 5" group at 8 meters, and goes for around $300. AND it's made from CZ parts [hence the accuracy].
I've also got an old Winchester 12GA pump, and a couple of '386' MAK 90's and a Finnish M39 in mint condition (and I was able to score Czech 'silver-tip' ammo for it).
As you can see, I go for accuracy over volume.

@475: "A MkIII Browning High Power that stays with me practically everywhere. Since I'm in Calif., it's often unloaded in a lockbox, to stay legal. Pisses me off, but I'm not willing to violate the law."
You can carry a holstered, unloaded pistol in CA. Just carry your mags on one side, pistol on the other.

For no time to choose, I have a Ruger mk lll .22 pistol in nightstand. For Long range I have a Sako Forester .243 with a Simmons scope. But I only have about 100 rounds of ammo for it.
For my bug-out bag I only have two weapons, a Remington International .22 WMR/.410 over & under and a customized Ruger 10/22 with a folding stock and a Aimpoint Micro sight system. I have six 25-round magazines for the 10/22. I have a box of #4 .410 shells (25) 5 rifled slugs. and 100 rounds of .22 WMR. Hopefully that will get me to Cherokee county, where I have several thousand rounds of .22 ammo (cheap) another 10/22, My Sako rifle, antibiotics, pot seeds, fishing equipment.. And lots of cover.
Seriously, .22 caliber weapons make perfect survival tools. You can spend a single paycheck and buy more ammo than you could probably use. .22 rounds could come in real handy for barter if shit goes bad. (so could weed). If you come at me with just a handgun on MY turf. I wouldn't even think about grabbing the .243. I will get you every time with my smallbore rifle. I'm more accurate, I have better range, and I can get off a lot more rounds a lot faster. For survival... a pistol is next to worthless. A weapon of last resort.

Browning HP, but the old dog is damn heavy.
Tarus stainless .38 daily carry, Federal PP's.
Judge Night Court by the bed, 1,.410 #4, 2,.410 #00, then the real stuff, .45 LC.
No Mr. Gubberment man, I got no guns, trust me.

In the nightstand: Rebuilt Norinco 1911-A1 in .45 ACP.
On my hip: Wilson Combat Professional 1911, also in .45 ACP.

My husband would like an SA 80...but I would prefer to have Ma Duece sitting on top of my house (with maybe an optional set up in my truck).
As for reality: well, I guess my favorites are -- what I've got; because those are the only weapons that matter.

503 I'm a traditionalist and prefer a good old Louisville slugger (if it breaks it's still effective in a clubby and stabby kind of way).
Like Mueller, as a member of the SSLOL I can't concealed carry -- but if the shtf I highly doubt that will matter much. As I'm pretty well landlocked the carrier task force would be a silly choice -- maybe have the local NG and Air Guard units at my disposal; that would come in handy.
A cache of claymores certainly wouldn't hurt.

Nothing beats a 30/30 winchester, Revolver, a six shot .357 magnum with at least a 4 inch barrel adj. sights for simplicity and safety.
In an auto pistol, a glock in 9 mm will do. Do not overlook the Markarov for cheap protection.
for CCW a S&W M640 in SS. .357 mag or .38 spl.
make sure your ammo is easy to find or manufacture.

My fave rifle is a Rossi replica of the 1892 Winchester in .357 Magnum. Not a long range package, but for any targets at ranges from 25 to 150 yards, it's handy and carries 10 rounds. If the targets are further out, I would go with my K31 Swiss straight-pull rifle in 7.5x55mm, but in a pinch I'm willing to go with my Garand. They're both sweet rifles, but the K31 narrowly beats out the Garand because it's stock trigger is better, and the Garand enbloc clips are a bit of a headache compared to magazines.
If we're talking handguns, a Ruger GP100 in .357 mag with a 6" heavy barrel is my "go to" gun. I'm also fond of a Makarov in 9x18, and an old Ortgies semiauto in .32 ACP. I know it's a mousegun, but the profile of the gun is seamlessly snagless, so if you can get over the whole "don't carry it with a round in the chamber because you shouldn't trust the sear" factor, it's a good low-recoil carry gun when you use Winchester silvertips.
Shotguns? I've got an old Montgomery Ward pumpgun that has had the barrel cut down to around 20". It's not as smooth of an action as my Remington 870, but it is handy.

you ladies and men with small hands take a look at short barrel rifle for home defence. When held properly it is barely longer than an extended arm with a handgun. I have a Puma 357 lever action that is fun to shoot, short barreled and of course shoots .38 or .357. Great little gun that even the wife can shoot without problems.

I am an old geezer so I don't have any firearms (God's Truth) but I do have two #2 pencils. With my background and training, even an old geezer can parlay two #2's into anything up to and including an Abrams tank. The wartime OSS instructors left a lot of helpful hints if you knew where to look and had the right clearances.
However, my favorite weapon was a Remington Arms automatic rifle, made in 1944. It was not issued until 1957 - I took it out of the original wrapper myself when the Seventh Division went Pentomic and the number of automatic riflemen in a squad doubled. Finest shooting weapon I ever had - nice tight shot groups even on full automatic.
BTW, I keep the #2 pencils realy sharp.

I pack a .177 caliber Daisy Red Ryder Special. Its lever-action, spring piston, smooth bore barrel, with adjustable iron sights, and a 650 shot gravity feed magazine . It's heavily modified from the standard Daisy Red Ryder by the addition of an engraved stock, and a saddle ring with leather thong on the receiver. This fine piece of instant justice has can "Put some eyes out" or worse.
Yeah, I'm ready for the zombie apocalypse.

I own a Beretta 92F and an IMI Baby Eagle, both in 9mm. I bought the Beretta when it first came out, so it wasn't available in .40 Smith. When I bought the Baby Eagle, I chose the 9mm so as to keep ammo simple. One day, I will trade them in for a .40.
For fun at the range, I also have a Desert Eagle in .357 magnum. It sounds like a cannon when it goes off. You don't carry a Desert Eagle, though.
I don't own a lot of ammo, but I do have some Golden Sabre and Black Talon in 9mm. And some .357 magnum FMJ. I'm sort of curious what the fully jacketed magnum would penetrate.

Wheelgun: my Ruger SP101 .357 revolver. Those Ruger revolvers freakin' rule; I like my Ruger even better than my Smith.

Carry: Smith & Wesson M&P 9 compact or Smith Wesson air-weight J frame .357magnum, but loaded with .38 special +P depending upon dress.
For the Obamalypse: M-1Cized Garand in .30-06 with Nightforce scope.
Three AR-15s for myself, the wife, and son for close in work.
One mini-14 for the daughter

On the nightstand, a S&W J-frame Centennial .38 Special snubby with Crimson Trace lasergrips.
For my right hand while I use my left hand to transition to the shotgun standing beside my bed.
Mossberg 500 12 gauge. 20" inch barrel. All black. All American made.
With 8 rounds of 00 buck.
Beretta FS 92 Centurion in my computer/TV den. 15 rounds of Rem. Golden Sabre hollowpoints. And another 15 in the spare magazine. Within my reach right now.
Now, when I'm out and about in our Wilderness areas with my Lab mix, I carry a Ruger Superhawk Alaskan revolver in .454 Casull. That's a hand-cannon with a 2 1/2 inch barrel. Just in case a bear or lion decides to "bother" my dog.
All the rest of my arsenal is in my gun safe.
Well yes, of course I'm paranoid. Why do you ask ? {:^)

At the house: Two Mossberg 12 guage shotguns, one for me & one for Mrs. Darkmage.
For World War Z: One M4gery and a Steyr Scout in .308 for those reach-out-and-touch-someone occasions.
