Mexican Drug Cartel Puts $1 Million Bounty On Sheriff Arpaio's Head
— Ace

Playing with dynamite.

The United States once -- under a very different president* -- had an idea of how to deal with that kind of arrogant banditry.

He's been at the center of the discussions and controversies surrounding illegal immigration enforcement in Arizona for quite a while.

On the day parts of Arizona's immigration law, SB 1070, went into effect, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio is in the news for another reason: there's a price on his head - allegedly offered by a Mexican drug cartel.

The audio message in Spanish is a bit garbled, but the text is clear.

"It's offering a million dollars for Sheriff Joe Arpaio's head and offering a thousand dollars for anyone who wants to join the Mexican cartel."

A man who wants to remain anonymous says his wife received the text message Tuesday evening. It also included an international phone number and instructions to pass the message along.

Were anything like that to even be attempted... well, nothing would happen exactly under President Apology Tour.

But after.

* Hah, I just realized -- Woodrow Wilson. Not really a "very different president" at all, in many respects, as Glenn Beck will tell you. But definitely was pretty free and easy about sending US troops into war.

Well, couple of interesting wrinkles here.  Ok, lets assume that the NSA, a federal government agency, decides it actually wants to involve itself in this mess.  Gratned, that would be a first under the Obama administration, a federal government entity that would actually do their jobs when presented with something that involved illegal immigration, but lets just say they do - and yes, they trace the number.  To a prepaid Mexican cell phone.  Then what exactly?

Hell, this guy could have used his home phone number, and even if they did have an exact address, what exactly do you think the Federales are going to do with this information once the NSA turns it over?  Rush over there and get themselves and their families killed?  Or take more money from this drug lord to stay out of his backyard?

This is not funny. At all.

An American citizen, one tasked with defending our laws, is threatened by a bunch of foreign thugs. Unfortunately, we have a government that doesn't give a shit.

Any president, attorney general or director of homeland "security" who really meant what they said when they took the oath of office would be on to the Mexican government, loudly and publicly, advising them that this is their problem, and that we will take serious -- and for Mexico -- unpleasant steps if Sheriff Arpaio gets so much as a headache.

Back then there was a big debate over whether to remove Mexico as Most-Favored-Nation trading status over their refusal to do anything about the flow of drugs. Many Rs were against renewal and public sentiment was generally favorable toward non-renewal but Clinton was for it.
And really, in the grand scheme of things, not one damn voter would care either way so the GOP would have been free to yank the status and the base would have been happy for a blow in the drug war. And, it was actually a club we could have used to at least get the Mexicans to do something with long-term benefits that would be paying dividends today.

But, like usual, the GOP collapsed like a cheap chair. For nothing: Not a promise, not a wink, not a pinkie-swear, not even a "we'll talk more later"--Nothing. So, when the budget shut-down came there was no question who was going to fold.

Posted by: Jane D'oh at August 02, 2010 02:28 PM

You have it right, Jane. Impeachment and arrest of the Traitor-in-Chief and every member of his regime even remotely involved is in order if anything at all happens on this front and the government responds in the Osama Obama do-nothing-talk-big tradition.
Posted by: MrScribbler

I agree except to say BEFORE rather than "if anything at all happens".

As a nation of states, we must defy the federal Marxism dissolving our Constitutional Governance from Washington. We have the Constitution on our side. There is no point giving in to dhimmitude because we are being told to take the abuse from Washington.

101 Herr Morgenholz,

SE Tucson hosts an Air Force Base that does nothing to combat the drug lord forts in the SW hills above town.

Even the military intelligence base is not secure in Arizona.

"The most frightening part of this is that Fort Huachuca is the U.S. Army Intelligence Center, where the Army trains its intelligence soldiers -- analysts, interrogators, radio intercept specialists, and counterintelligence agents -- for operations overseas. If we can't secure the fort we use to train our intelligence soldiers, how can we secure anything else?"--T.J. Woodard is a retired Army officer who lives less than ten miles from the Mexican border. He carries a pistol even in his own house in order to be prepared to defend his family whenever necessary.

103 Maverick Muse et. al.,

What Jane D'oh said was that she feels Osama Obama is responsible if anything happens to Arpaio.

I was agreeing with her and being critical of following comments that made jokes about the situation.

Don't know if she agrees with my conclusions, so wanted to clear that up.

But, on reflection I stand by what I said: if we had real Americans running the Traitor-in-Chief's regime, they would tell Mexico (and its little tin-pot president) to straighten up NOW, before we are forced to make their lives more miserable than they are.

Anything less is a violation of the oath of office all our "leaders" took. And that in turn is grounds for removal from office and criminal prosecution.

The Army quartered with Mexican Colonials. It wasn't "killing Mexicans" unless caught with Pancho Villa.

Our Army had to follow Wilson's rules of engagement that prohibited any civilian deaths or entanglements with the opposing Mexican Revolutionary besting Villa. Intelligence was lacking then, as our military did not yet boast many Hispanic soldiers or Spanish speaking Gringos. The Army returned home after bad intelligence and an "unfortunate" incident attacking Wilson's revolutionary choice.

115 I'm going to go with my old-standby option: NEUTRON BOMBS. Look Mexico has a shit-ton of natural resources. And with illegal immigration and all the narco-terrorism spilling over they are not good neighbors. Time for all that to end. We drop neutron bombs all over that country. Once all the organics are dead we set it up sort of a free enterprise zone free of taxation and most regulation. Allow US Citizens to migrate and rebuild a solid and stable society. Turn that into a couple states which would undoubtedly would be highly conservative. Hell, even the cost of the bombs and securing the land would be covered by not having to give Mexico financial aid anymore or the crushing burden of illegals. As always, the answer is NEUTRON BOMBS.

I don't see a lot of humor in this type of threat either, but I also understand that when the outrageous becomes everyday news with this administration, sometimes you have to laugh so you don't go crazy.

So what do you think Obama will do with this coming on the heels of Mexico's President coming here and lecturing us? Apologize to the cartel for the US being provocative and advise everyone to tone down the rhetoric?

129 Wilson was a fuck-up from Day One.  Just like Barry.  Wilson liked to brag "he kept us out of the war!"  Yep, sure did.  And forbade the Army Chief of Staff from making any CONTINGENCY plans if we somehow got sucked up into it.

As a result, in April 1917, when we found ourselves at war with Germany, good old Mr Wilson called for a two million man army.  Unfortunately, we would only be able to arm about less than 1/2 million with the Springfield '03 rifle.   Fortunately the Brits had completed their rifle contracts with Remington and Winchester.  So the majority of Doughboys went to war with the Model of 1917.  The Brit P14, chambered in 30-06.

Nice planning there Woodrow.  Ya dipshit!

The story concerned Mexican consular officials prowling in New York to make sure their peeps aren't being discriminated against by the Eeeeeevil Gringos.

Naturally, that didn't draw any attention from Osama Obama and the rest of the third-world-loving lickspittles in his regime.

If he was around today, Theodore Roosevelt would have sent kick-ass Marines into Mexico and settled the drug cartels' hash on the spot. They might have done a number on Calderon, too, but hey, TR was just a big, impulsive kid.

134 The only way we're going to lessen the cartel violence in Mexico is to do what we did in Colombia; covert military action. Send guys to train the Mexican army, then go out with them and hit the cartels in the nuts. It's going to require killing people, which is something so many in this administration find unacceptably icky.
