Mexico Is A Dangerous Place...Third In An Occasional Series
— DrewM

mexicoisdangerous.jpg

Mexico, the country that attacks the US for having the temerity to enforce it's immigration laws is under attack from Amnesty International for....the systemic abuse of illegal immigrants.

Rupert Knox, Amnesty's Mexico researcher, said in the report that the failure by authorities to tackle abuses against migrants has made their trip through Mexico one of the most dangerous in the world.

"Migrants in Mexico are facing a major human rights crisis leaving them with virtually no access to justice, fearing reprisals and deportation if they complain of abuses," Knox said.

Central American migrants are frequently pulled off trains, kidnapped en masse, held at gang hideouts and forced to call relatives in the U.S. to pay off the kidnappers. Such kidnappings affect thousands of migrants each year in Mexico, the report says.

Many are beaten, raped or killed in the process.

One of the main issues, Amnesty says, is that migrants fear they will be deported if they complain to Mexican authorities about abuses.

At present, Article 67 of Mexico's Population Law says, "Authorities, whether federal, state or municipal ... are required to demand that foreigners prove their legal presence in the country, before attending to any issues."

Chutzpah...thy name is Mexico!

I'm sure illegal immigrants and American tourists alike, would much prefer to take in the sights at say, the Grand Canyon, than the hell hole that is Mexico.

The purpose of this series...

In response to Arizona's immigration law, Mexico's Ambassador to the United States announced that his government issued a travel advisory to Mexicans saying they should avoid traveling to Arizona. It seems the Mexican government, despite its own stringent immigration laws, thinks expecting Mexicans in the US to follow US law is tantamount to harassment.

This got me thinking that perhaps we should focus on some of the dangers Americans face when traveling to Mexico. Exposure is really the only way to fight such chutzpah.

My children's best friends are all Mexican-Americans. I very much like most of  the Mexican-Americans that I know. I see signs at these protests that are basically advocating for civil war. I  hope it doesn't come to that, but they damned sure seem to be pushing in that direction.

14 Most of the illegals in the middle east coast aren't mexicans but El Salvdorians, Columbians, Hondurans etc. They are indeed traveling through Mexico to get here. They must keep going past the border states because the competition for jobs is tougher. The Mexicans look down on them.

Explain to me again why illegal aliens in this country are protesting?

Are they protesting because Mexico isn't a free country, or that Mexico's definition of  freedom is limited to "You're free to leave?"

Central Americans complain about abuse by the Colossus (to their) North–Or: “You DON’T wanna be illegal in Mexico!”

Mexican President Felipe Calderon on the new Arizona law: "this opens the door to intolerance, hate, discrimination and abuse in law enforcement."

"Jose Ramos, 18, of El Salvador said the extortion (by Mexican border police) occurs at every stop in Mexico, until migrants are left penniless and begging for food.

Maria Elena Gonzalez, said female migrants often complain about abusive (Mexican border) police officers. "They (Mexican border police) force them to strip, supposedly to search them, but the purpose is to sexually abuse them," she said.

Others said they had seen migrants beaten to death by (Mexican border) police, their bodies left near the railway tracks to make it look as if they had fallen from a train..."If you're carrying any money, they (Mexican border police) take it from you," said Guatemalan migrant Carlos Lopez in the same story, "federal, state, local (Mexican) police--all of them." Lopez had been shaken down repeatedly in 15 days of traveling through Mexico.

"If you're on a bus, they pull you off and search your pockets, and if you have any money," added El Salvadoran migrant Jose Ramos, "they (Mexican Border police) keep it all and say, 'Get out of here!'"

In May of 2002, 18 Americans--though holding perfectly legal Mexican visas--were unceremoniously booted out of Mexico. "And stay out!" yelled the Mexican immigration authorities while shaking their fists.

The Americans' crime? Why, the arrogant Gringo scoundrels participated in a May Day march in Mexico City!

Unreal.

25 Speaking of illegal aliens, my son, as one of sixty student senators at Texas A&M, is co-sponsor of bill to stop the in-state tuition rate to illegals. The opposition that he has heard so far is incredible.  Basically, if you're from Oklahoma, Florida, or one of the other 47 states, you will pay the much higher out of state tuition rate.  But if you are an illegal and went to high school in Texas, you get the in-state rate. It's just crazy.

26 Personally, I am happy that Arizona decided to exercise it's sovereign right to govern itself. That is the big issue.

The fucking Feds know no shame. They pass the immigration and reform act 20 years ago, immediately refuse to enforce it, then blame the citizens and Az. for trying to protect itself 20 years later from all of the ill effects their inactivity- or criminal failure to act- has caused.

It is a real head scratcher, trying to fig out where the problem lies. Not.

45 The irony is that this bill actually helps the illegals who pay the "Coyotes" thousands of dollars to be smuggled across the border, packed like sardines in vehicles and dumped at drop houses around the valley. They are at the mercy of these guys and many are abused and most of the women raped. Often they are simply abandoned and end up back in Mexico. And so the cycle continues, ping-ponging back and forth from Mexico to AZ (and other border states). I hope that if this law comes to pass in 90 days, it will put a crimp in the Coyotes' ease of taking advantage of these people.

Bingo. Political jujitsu.

Mexico has people trying to sneak in from even poorer Central America--imagine that. People who speak the same language, are just as brown (in fact often lighter skinned) than people in Quintana Roo and Chiapas provinces, and are probably quite compatible in Mexico. Do the Mexicans care? Not in the least. (It was amusing to see Mexican patrol boats in Cancun and Cozumel, making sure our dive boat was full of gringo and euro divers and not Guatemalans sneaking in).

When it comes to Mexico, they aren't lying. Mexico solves its Guatemalan and other Central American illegal alien problem quite simply and ruthlessly, by not hiring them, not giving them *any* benefits, and ruthlessly throwing them out when they do catch them.

Actually, the hyphenated American doesn't bother me, because historically it indicates a group on its way into the melting pot (Polish Americans, Italian Americans, Japanese Americans, etc.)

I'm not being obtuse, at all.  I have stated my problem with this very clearly and directly.  And, this isn't about hypocrisy, at all.  What does Mexico's treatment of illegals have to do with ours - even in the fevered minds of the left?  That bit of hypocrisy only applies to Mexico's attempt to address domestic US policy, which Mexico shouldn't be trying to do, no matter what, but it has nothing to do with the left and those who want to grant amnesty, here.  They would just say that the illegals from the south need to be given political asylum in the US to escape the awful treatment they get in Mexico. I'll bet that Amnesty likes the asylum idea, too, for the reasons cited (of them) in this post.

56 historically it indicates a group on its way into the melting pot (Polish Americans, Italian Americans, Japanese Americans, etc.)

Historically, sure.  But we don't have a melting pot anymore--assorted groups insisting on being recognized for ethnicity first and "American" second is creating more of a "salad", to use a metaphor from Victor Davis Hanson.  Each component of a salad is distinct; the flavors may blend well (or not...sometimes one flavor overpowers all the others, demanding prayer breaks and footbaths), but the cabbage and the tomatoes are identified as separate, loosely connected pieces.  All they have in common is the vinegrette.

Federal officials were stunned to learn that pages from an Immigration Reform measure got mixed in with pages from the Health Reform Act. Worse, it became part of the immigration reform which has already become law. Civil rights advocates were appalled to learn that the non-existent death panels actually do exist. But rather than applying quality of life metrics to American senior citizens, those same metrics are applied to persons illegally in the United States. Given the fact that those people "are now in a fundamentally racist nation, the Quality of Life index for them is quite low," said one anonymous official, "but, at least they'll have health insurance." Protesters had already surrounded the Arizona Capital, one carrying a sign saying "No Lethal Injections." President Obama had no comment and is said to be looking "for the best hamburger in DC."

I agree with you on the gist of this, but I just don't agree that any Amnesty report carries any meaning in this regard.  I don't see why the US would have to refer to any other country's treatment of its borders or illegals to justify defending American sovereignty.  I don't like arguments for American law that cite some foreign law (for whatever reason) and that is the part of the basis to my objection, here - in addition to the problem I have with anyone who cites Amnesty for "information".

We just disagree on this part of the issue.

68 @43 Actually it is all about getting commiecrats elected over and over again.

If we had Eastern Europeans who just got out from under communism coming in at the rate the Mexicans are coming in Democrats would never be elected again.

If comprehensive reform includes allowing an influx of Polish and Czech women across our northern borders, I fully support it.
