— DrewM We hadn't heard from Steele in quite some time. Well, break time is over, everyone back on your heads*.
This time Steele steps in it regarding Afghanistan.
"Keep in mind again, federal candidates, this was a war of Obama's choosing. This was not something that the United States had actively prosecuted or wanted to engage in," he said. "But it was the president who was trying to be cute by half by building a script demonizing Iraq, while saying the battle really should be in Afghanistan. Well, if he is such a student of history, has he not understood that you know that's the one thing you don't do, is engage in a land war in Afghanistan?"
And never go against a Sicilian when death is on the line.
Is Steele's position that we shouldn't have gone to Afghanistan after 9/11? That when things started going really badly there in 06-07 we should have left? That would put him at odds with just about every Republican, save perhaps Ron Paul.
If you look really hard and twist his plain words, you can kind of almost see that he's trying to say something about Obama's bad mouthing Iraq and claiming the US should have only focused on Afghanistan. That critique (which isn't what Steele really said) only works if Obama had come into office and cut and run. Considering he surged troops to Afghanistan and doubled down on it with the Petraeus appointment, it makes no sense.
There's simply no way to look at what Steele said and conclude he has the slightest idea of what he's talking about when it comes to the history of why we are in Afghanistan or what Obama has done there since coming to office.
As Bill Kristol says, it's time for Mr. Steele to leave the building.
*If you don't get the reference, it's an old joke.

We should have nuked Afghanistan while osama, zawahiri and the taliban were all assembled there. Once they were reduced to shadows on the ground Hussein [the other Hussein] would have opened himself and his nation to a full colonoscopy from US weapon inspectors. Needless to say we would not have had to sacrifice thousands of soldiers. Because we were unwilling to make the unpopular but victory ensuring decision we're now stuck in a protracted war. Hopefully we learn from this lesson; if we're hit again vaporize the perpetrators.
To compound the problem a recent article [NYSlimes of all places I believe] revealed that $3 Billion in cash annually is being taken out of Afghanistan. What's happening is the war lords are stealing the money and taking it out of the country. We are being fleeced; that money could be used for Americans in need.

Obama is a corrupt moron, but at the very least, there is some effort to win a very tough war.
Steele is a corrupt moron with no redeeming features.
I do not understand why would even want to be chair of the RNC. I think he is simply passive aggressively damaging the party because he knows we have a huge problem with his greedy and lazy work. Perhaps he wants the GOP to reject him so loudly that he can become one of those 'media conservatives.'

Posted by: Sharrukin at July 02, 2010 09:58 AM (eYgrz)
Well I'm going to do the unpopular thing and offer a small defense of Steele's comments.
First, Steele pointed out the old saying about a *LAND* war in Afghanistan. We weren't in a land war before Obama. A fighting a land war doesn't mean, just having troops on the ground. It means fighting to gain and retain land through the use of all the resources needed to secure and dominate the territory you've gained.
It is wise to look at the historical record on this and see that it has never worked, has, or nearly has, collapsed every military that has tried. The latest was the USSR who had the far better circumstance than the US of being able to drive their tanks from Mother Russia right to Afghanistan. They could send troops by rail and truck, all without ever crossing a unfriendly boarder until the arrived at the front. We in the US, must send everything by air for some portion of it's trip and we must beg access from a unstable government who can barely insure safe passage.
The original fight, using light, mobile, special forces and local partnerships is a far superior tactic in my opinion. A *LAND* war is not winnable for any price in blood or treasure that the US will pay, willingly or not.
But that is just one old Sargent's view.

Plenty of smart black dudes out there (LTC Allen West presents an example of where to find a goodly portion of them). But what do you do? You vote in the two biggest tards we have who can walk and chew gum at the same time to lead your two political parties. And RNC voters, you should really smack yourselves. You claim to believe in individuality and color-blindness, but when the Donks picked their tard, you panicked. Instead of picking the best man for the job, you went with race.
And, and, and--you didn't even pick the most competent black dude available. (That was Ken Blackwell.) You went for the doofus.
So now we're spreading the stupidity around, along with the wealth. Thanks a flockin lot, my white brethren.
/just funning on the white people angle but you see my point.
Posted by: baldilocks at July 02, 2010 11:50 AM (pWXnd)
I could pick a better black dude to run our party by walking down the street and just randoming grabbing some dude.
But the real problem is that the RNC was picking Steele *because* he was black. When you do that, you are ignoring what really matters.
In my experience, the people harmed most by affirmative action are the really brilliant black people who are constantly getting beaten by the game playing losers who happen to share their skin color. And worse, the brilliant ones who make it are often doubted. In school, they are disadvantaged because they may wind up competing with people they shouldn't be, too. A black law student who would easily bust the curve at Georgetown will actually wind up at Columbia where he has a much harder time.
Affirmative action isn't helping blacks in general.
Steele is a great example. We could have found a black man, if we wanted to be racist, who was competent, but that's besides the point that it shouldn't matter. We wound up being labeled as racists anyway by the KKK party. That's just inevitable. Why legitimize that crap by freaking and picking Steele?
Posted by: Chili Corn Chips at July 02, 2010 12:07 PM (dUOK+)
Michael who?
I'm sorry but Steele was a mistake from day one. Apparently, his job is not very important in the GOP ... why? Because Steele has been making these stupid gaffes FOREVER. Maybe the reason so many in the GOP don't slit their wrists is we've had so many years to develop political calluses for the likes of ... Lyndsey Graham who is the poster boy for every RINO that ever existed.
The Democrats love fools ... Al Sharpton, Al Gore, ... the list is endless. That's one reason Americans who don't have a clue about the issues will vote for a Democrat -- at least they get entertainment on the way to the "showers". But, fairly or unfairly, most Americans expect the GOP to be less comical. Michael Steele is confusing them ... but only until they figure out he wasn't trying to be funny.
How in hell did Steele get this job to begin with? I did not think a negative IQ was possible but I'm not so sure anymore.

Who did you want for RNC chairperson? My recollection was (from watching the process on CSPAN or wherever it was) that there were not very strong candidates. Wasn't one of the ones who was being touted one of the jerks from South Carolina (Dawson)?
At the time, I thought Steele was fine. I don't think he was picked because he was black. I really think it was that he was thought of as someone who would be a good spokesperson. He was more visible in the Beltway and with media folks than a lot of the party hack types because of his Lt. Gov.'ship in Maryland. I think his race was a factor, but not the major factor.

I support both wars but we should have never gone to Afghanistan, thus never entering Iraq. Unfortunately the nation has been feminized and homosexualized to a large extent leaving us unwilling to do what needed to be done.
I see...when terrorists strike us, instead of attempting to, I don't know, apprehend them by going where they are, we should just do a random nuclear strike on some goatherds who may or may not be in the same area as the terrorists. And if I disagree I'm obviously a feminine faggot. Gotcha.
Seriously, there was a school of military thought before WWII that said we'd never need to fight a land war again, because we now had all those bombers. Germany attempted to defeat Britain in the Battle thereof, and guess what? It didn't put Britain out of the war. Britain tried the same thing with Germany later on, and that didn't work either, which is why we needed that whole inconvenient D-Day thing.
Yeah, I realize we have nukes now, but I'm still pretty skeptical that we could defeat Afghanistan from the air alone, especially since the enemy forces are spread out and, in many cases, hidden.
Keep in mind, the USSR, not known for being feminized or homosexualized, never once tried to use nukes there.
Also, keep in mind that Michael Wiener aka Savage, the guy from whom your brilliant idea originated, eventually got caught donating money to Jerry Brown, almost certainly because he was a leftist trying to make conservatives look bad.

Someone with a vision that would take the party to more competitive status. Steele simply fired all the smart RNC guys and filled their slots with his cronies. He has no plan resembling the bold Dean plan. He has done very little to boost his party on the internet beyond spamming bloggers.
Steele is not a normal chairperson. We've never really had one who acted like he does with finances (it's his fault), or selling his books and speeches. He's very unusual, and I admit, I didn't see it coming either, and we all hate him only in hindsight, but it's time to replace him.
Sure, we had little way of knowing it was going to be such a mistake. However, Steele's fake jive talk and much of the noise around him when picked seemed to be how he would be a great counter to Obama because he's black.
I think it was this 'he's great no matter his skin, but he's also black which really helps'.
Whether that's fair or not, and whether we should have known or not, we can fix the problem today. We should simply pick a new chairperson. I don't care about procedure or if Steele is Ok with it. He should show up to work Money and find the contents of his desk in a box on the ground and completely ignored from this point forward.
Politics stops at the water's edge and his job is to focus on elections. There's a lot of nitty gritty work to be done there that doesn't get someone on TV and famous. He won't do his damn job.
I wish either Romney or Palin would take the job because both of them have done a lot of nitty gritty dealing with candidates and endorsements and raising cash. I realize it would mean they can't be president in 2013, but I don't get to be president either. I think either of them have a lot of clout and could be powerful in shaping a new message.
Romney, in particular, is great at raising money and he could probably straighten out the party. Palin, however, carries an inspiring 'this is not the old party of hack flip floppy RINOs'.
I don't mind if someone else steps up. Probably several better options, but we need to knock this Steele guy out of the party because he is costing us needed votes.

You do sound like a feminized homosexual but that's neither here nor there.
"I see...when terrorists strike us, instead of attempting to, I don't know, apprehend them"
You sound like John Kerry. 9/11 did not warrant a criminal investigation you bedwetting queer, it warranted war, and since we knew where the perpetrators were assembled considering they took responsibility, the prudent thing to do would have been to vaporize them while they were all assembled in one location. You had al qaeda, the taliban, osama and zawahiri in one location. With one [ maybe a few] swift nuclear strikes we could have delivered a massive blow to the islamists without expending so much blood and treasure. Now go play with your pussy, homo.
Posted by: Bullets&Beer at July 02, 2010 02:27 PM (BedzM)
As completely out of step with current politics this may sound,
you have to admit, it would have worked. And we would have won the war on terror. Simply nuking those affiliated with al qaida, in one strike, would have ended any discussion about whether it's a good idea to murder thousands of our civilians.
It would have been far more palatable close to 9/11.
saying we will do everything we can to strike back at this kind of attack, with absolutely no hesitation beyond identifying our enemy, would have stopped this problem dead cold. We wouldn't be hearing Iran or North Korea's bullshit. Russia wouldn't be nearly so bold as to help our enemies.
There is a time when that most extreme measure is useful.
Posted by: Chili Corn Chips at July 02, 2010 02:58 PM (dUOK+)
If you listen to it all, it comes off awkwardly, but what he appears to be driving at is the method of prosecuting the war. The Special forces-centered approach of the Bush admin, where US forces are largely not regular infantry, but support, intelligence, special ops, air-strike callers, etc and the Afghans do most of the actual fighting vs the Obama approach of injecting larger amounts of regular infantry to fight the Taliban directly. Much truth in that, he just didn't get it out right. As is often the case with him.
Nobody cares what he says, he's a side show. If the Obamunists think people will vote for them because of what Steele says, let them engage in their usual clutching and grabbing at phrases and words and act out their Goebbelsian fantasies of being the master propagandists they think they are. Nobody will remember what Steele said about anything in a week.

Steele isn't going to be the reason voters say they voted one way or the other, I agree, but getting a message to candidates, planning our strategies for which races are important (such as Dean's Secretaries of State program which is constantly used to beat us over the head, such as just today in Byrd's old seat), dealing with finances, and just a slew of nitty gritty details... that shit makes a huge difference on election day.
Turnout can be severely affected. limited resources can be steered with wisdom.
Just Steele... he doesn't give a shit. We're not ready to take over, in his book. He wants minority status as a party.

It amazing how often he manages to shoot himself in the foot considering he's usually chewing on it.
To call him a buffoon is an insult to buffoons.

With this latest bit I am beginning to wonder if he's a plant from the other side.

Wrong. Blackwell is the guy whose plan the tea-party-type conservatives are using to take over the party.
As Baldilocks said, they picked the wrong black guy.

This is a quantum leap of stupidity beyond his previous efforts. He sounds more like Bob Barr than the RNC Chairperson. The DNC couldn't hope for better fodder if he was on their payroll (which BTW might be worth investigating).
To hell with him resigning - he should be openly and publicly fired - throw him a bone about his loyal service then unshamedly toss him under the nearest bus.
He's a Republican Jayson Blair.
No more affirmative action hires for the RNC Chair. Put Palin in his chair and to hell with anyone who cries "racism." This man's idiocy transcends the bounds of racial politics.
