Michelle Bachmann Forms Tea Party Caucus Within The House
— Ace

This is good in a bunch of ways.

Republicans have been wrangling for more than a year over how exactly to handle the tea party movement, but now Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) is bringing them under the big tent.

The House Administration committee, which usually takes days to approve something of this nature, approved Bachmann's request to create a House Tea Party Caucus in a day. It will certainly give the national movement a more official voice within the House Republican Conference.

....Republican leaders have flirted with the tea party — often appearing at rallies — but there has been no consensus over exactly how to include the movement within the party.

She has to be watchful about who she lets in, obviously. There are a lot of Republicans who'd love to be in this caucus but simply do not meet the entry requirements.

Ah, the continueing effort to pull the TEA party movement INSIDE the Beltawy.

NAACP did it by asking for politicians to speak for it to address its Racism.

Gingrich piled on and said they should.

Now Bachman taking what is an anti Big Gov movments, and pulling its name into one of the largest cesspools of politics... and what is broken... that exists.

By ursurping the TEA party name... Bachman is giving the MSM cover to use her, and ONLY her, as the spokesperson for the movment... somthing they have been looking for for months... because Alinskys tactics need a movment to be personalized, so it can be ridiculed, and frozen.

I am so proud of this woman.

I remember when I was still a deranged democrat, I thought this woman was nuts, and then I finally listened to her as an American, not a democrat, and I found I agreed with her on mostly everything (not social issues) though, and made my first donation to her this year.

I am a huge supporter of the Tea Party, and I have been to several, spoke for a bit at the last one 2 weeks ago, said I was a recovering democrat, and met some of the most patriotic Americans.

I hope the Tea Party movement stays focused on what it has been, smaller govt, adherance to the US consitution and founding principles of indiv responsivility, free market, strong defense of this country's soverignity, belief in American exceptionalism.

11 What good is a one-member caucus?

There's not a single person in our FUBAR Congress who isn't a free-spending, arrogant, unprincipled crook. The only difference is what they want to waste our money doing, and what laws they want to pass to order us to do what's "best" for us..

You gonna have Mitch McConnell in there? Lindsey Graham? Orrin Hatch?

I'm not even sure about Bachmann, so the safest course is to boot everyone out and start fresh.

20 I hope ACE is right, but there are also concerns.

The unethical Leftists will continue to slander the Tea Party Protests.

Many others will try to exploit the Tea Party Protest offering, and some are not going to be the most attractive.

The candidacy of Rand Paul could be a positive or a negative - right now, we just don't know.

I think the world of Ms. Bachmann, and know she has sound judgment, so I think it is a positive.

However, the way it is going, and after that bizarre TEA PARTY Express endorsement of a horrid Democrat - coupled with the equally strange Convention, the verdict is out.

The Tea Party Protest can remain a healthy venue for the fine Americans to voice their outrage at this disaster in Washington - somehow when Politicians try to glob on, it gets muddled.

We shall see...

43 The sad truth is that so many voters are too lazy to check voting history or background on candidates. It is sad that Bachmann has to do this! At least with parties you can get a small understanding of where candidates base their values. The Tea Party movement could risk it's relevance by backing candidates. It then has to focus on the business of getting candidates elected. I think that the Tea Party must maintain its independence to be the real thing, a grass roots movement supporting the conservation of American tradition. Bachmann is a friend, but my fear is that the wrong person can do such harm by taking the power within the movement and using it for their own gain.

Kinda like when they drew the line in the sand at the Alamo. You cross it and there is no turning back. Now we will know better who's for real and who's blowing smoke. Good for her. It's time to stop worrying about what the left will say and to grow a pair. And it will give the newbies in Nov. someplace to go and not just left to wander aimlessly.

The Tea Party is not a party, it is a movement. As long as it focusses on lower taxes and smaller government it will be ok. While I am pro-life and such, this is not the place for those discussions. We can discuss that in another setting. Just stay on track here. If the river is flooding, I don't care what your position on gay marriage is, just keep piling those sandbags.

The left will bitch about anything they can, and the louder the get, the stupider they look. You can get away with crap only for so long before people start catching on.

bugsrus, the problem is you can't leave a vaccuum for just anybody to fill. Then you will get clowns like that guy in Texas, and the media would just love that. Bachman has been out front from the beginning and I would trust her more than somebody just popping up and claiming leadership. Life is a risk, but you just have to say "screw it" and go forward.

The GOP that sits in the house next year will not be all the same faces as last time. You will still have good guys like Ryan and Sensenbrenner, but to reclaim the house will at least 39 new guys beating democrats, plus pubs replacing ones beaten in primaries. How about letting these people come in feeling they have support instead of beating the crap out them before they are even sworn it.

I always work harder for a boss that I felt appreciated my busting my ass for him. The ones I knew who didn't and just treated me like crap, they just got enough out of me to write out my paycheck.

52 This is the time for the Tea Party to transition from becoming a movement to actually governing.  It's always a dangerous time because actual governing requires compromise, which risks the identity of the movement.

The Tea Party now faces an existential choice:  It can become effective, which means it has to compromise to get support from non-Party Republicans and Democrats, or it can remain ideologically pure, in which case it will be totally ineffective and might as well not exist.

The Progressive movement didn't get to where it is today by drawing lines in the sand.  They accepted compromise because they knew they could come back and get just a bit more.  If we're going to undo the damage they've caused we need to have the same mindset.

Posted by: Jeff Gauch at July 17, 2010 10:49 AM (CO/RA)

53 Entry requirements: earnest pledge to uphold the original meaning of the Constitution and Bill of Rights; eagerness to fervently and dramatically cut spending including a willingness to cut government branches, departments, and payrolls across the board; a vow that more taxes and tariffs are not the solution; a pledge to never vote for a bill that increases spending or borrowing.

Not entry requirements: anything else unrelated to the primary message of cutting government down small enough to fit in the Constitution, including any stances one way or the other regarding abortion, marriage, foreign policy, etc. The more the Tea Party strays from the message, the more easily the Tea Party will come apart and simply become simply the 'angry' wing of the GOP.

Posted by: LA Liberty at July 17, 2010 10:52 AM (V9PCL)

54 Now the left has a person to target as racist not just the formless mass of the tea party. They already think Bachmann as a nut now this will just give them more ammo to go after her and she will continue to kick the around.   I think it is wonderful because if the republicans did not take hold of the tea party after the election the Dems are going to say that they are all members of the tea party when they are out of power. And as they always do they will just forget all the race cards that are being played and claim that it was the republicans that called the tea party racists.

57 I love the Tea Party movement, but the Mission Statement in this post has a flaw. "adherence to the Constitution" could be worded better. Overnight abolishment of, say, Social Security would be a horrible shock to the country. I would say "restoring the Constitution." Better still, I would leave it out. I love the the Constitution, but the Tea Party needs just one or two things upon which all factions agree. Reduction in government spending, and limiting the size of government are those things. And the Tea Party Caucus is not the Tea Party. If it messes up, the Tea Party rolls on.

I mean, I've heard of purity tests, but Christ, "stay out of power!" is a tad unproductive. What should the Tea Party be, a permanent and powerless protest organization?

Posted by: schizuki at July 17, 2010 12:28 PM (Xd9fe)

63 I like the idea of Bachman trying to corral some of these congressional knuckleheads.

Agree.  Although a beauty of the Tea Party is that it's decentralized and outside the Beltway, at some point we've got to have at least some kind of official structure, no matter how loose-- even the Sons of Liberty had one.  I think this will help coalesce and concentrate.  It will provide some kind of centralized standard so that we don't wind up a circular firing squad, and to help organize behind truly conservative candidates.  We can have the most firepower that way.

And I can see how the movement can be confusing to someone new to it; we all saw it grow, but for those just waking up, the Tea Party is a whole bunch of different websites, often for the same area.  Who's the Tea Party?  Who's 9/12?  What's the difference?  Whose endorsement really matters?  If we want it to last, it should be standardized--not co-opted, but a united patchwork of Constitutionally-based concerns.

And how long have we been screaming for the GOP to wake the fuck up and look at its own poll numbers?  If we don't want to hand the White House right back to Obama, we must prevent a three-man race.  Taking a Tea Party caucus within the GOP will create pressure to force out Rhinos.  Ain't room for everybody, and one of the main reasons (out of many) that McCain didn't win is that people saw him as Obama Lite, and so sat home.  Providing a true, conservative alternative to him whom we can all support is the only way to win in 2012.  I think the most efficient way to do this is from within the party.  True conservatives and Tea Partiers know that we will be all up in their grills if the start turning Rhino, and they'll be out of a job in two years.

The reason the "Reform Party" fizzled out after '92 is that it was personality-based, not really idea based, and if we want the Tea Party to stick around as watchdogs I think it should have at least some kind of foothold from within.

That's cool....but the first entry requirement should be passing a test on the US Constitution. ...Passing it at least 95%.

I'm at the point where I think everyone should pass a test on the Constitution by at least 95% before they can run for ANY public office, no matter where or what it is.....

So what?  It's not like she advocates for it and it isn't like she has a choice in paying the taxes that fund it.  If she's eligible for that money she'd be stupid to deny it out of principle.  Somebody would get it.  She wouldn't save a dime for anybody.

Milton Friedman used to say the same thing, undoubtedly better than I am.

78 I just hope Mrs. Bachman doesnt go down the Sarah Palin road, and become a mockery of conservatism. I feel, and it is only an opinion, that Palin needs to keep her yap shut.

Posted by: Dalton at July 17, 2010 04:19 PM (2CHXn)

79 Think of it this way: if Bachmann hadn't had the idea to do this now, some opportunistic squish RINO type down the road might have done it, for the purposes of reelection and increased visibility. All the while not caring one whit about the Tea Party or its message. In short order, it would have become a meaningless and useless entity. Obviously the jury is still out on whether it will help or not, but at least with Bachmann at its head, it has a fighting chance. And if the Tea Party as a whole doesn't like it, they can just ignore it.

81 Exactly, Book Geek. You can't leave open like that for anyone to walk in and proclaim himself "leader". I trust Bachman more than anyone else right now. Ryan and Pence are great and would do a good job, but they are better in policy and party leadership. Michele has the fire and has been there from the beginning. And on this narrow range of purpose, there could be dems willing to join. I think more are realizing they have to get their party back from the loons or they won't have one.

83  1st of all, I'd like to say, that Nancy is the most wonderful woman I've ever met.
That being said, Michelle Bachmann is not all that bright.
The Tea party can have her. They won't get very far.
And neither will Sarah Palin. They both sound like harpy parrots.
I think the GOP will pick up a few seats this year in the House.
Maybe 6 or 8. Not enough to make a difference.
Maybe 2 in the Senate. Still, not enough to make a difference.
I really don't expect much change with this up coming election.
A few small victories. But nothing great.
It's the silent majority we have to think about.
Yes, some people agree with the tea party.
Most are appalled by their rhetoric.
And a lot of people just dismiss them as being a passing phase in American politics. Which I tend to agree with.
Then there's the people who just laugh at them.
  Bachmann? Seriously. Palin? Seriously.
We'd be better off with GWB  running again. Well, maybe not GW. Tom Delay?

84 #85: Junior, you know you go by "Ron", and I go by Ronald, so people don't confuse us.  When you say stupid stuff like that, it makes me look bad.  We talked about this.

85 Dad.
Your Alzheimer's is acting up again.
But it's ok. Your mental condition is understandable
Being a flip flopper all your life can burn up what brain cells you had.
Is that you Space? I see your bloog is still based on distortion and lies. Pretty appropriate coming from the likes of  you.
But then again, it is Space of Aids.
Lying Liars and the Lies they tell.
 That's you Space.
And your deluded followers, sheeesh, talk about morons.
So, who you backing in the next Prez election Space?
The Quitta from Wassila?  Crazy Eyes Bachmann?
The Huckster? Pawlenty? Mittens? Dream on Space.
So? You gonna ban me again for calling you a liar?
The truth hurts Space. You must hate yourself a lot.
Anyone who hates as much as you do, usually hates themselves. I pity you.

I'll say a prayer for you. You're gonna need all the help you can  get . St Peter will want a good explanation.
And he'll see right through your lies.
Go ahead and ban me. I doubt I'll be back here.
The Silent majority will be the deciding factor in the next 2 elections. Especially the Prez election in 2012.
And you clowns picked Bachmann. For that alone, you deserve to lose. How's those feet feel? They gotta be hurtin after shootin yourself in the foot so many times..
Keep it up. I'm counting on it.

bigred, are you referring to that state senator who formed an "Independent Conservative Republicans" group and then opened the door to any GOP member of the legislature, no matter how lousy his voting record?

It's so sad when one of your children turns into a drooling liberal moonbat.

World, I apologize for my brain dead son.

88  Haa! LOL.

This aberration you call the Tea party,or  as they originally called themselves Teabaggers, will be short lived.
I'm a centrist. Call me what you want, it won't change my positions on matters.
Everyone that disagrees with you is a moonbat or whatever.
 Good. That's good.
Being a centrist, I see the Tea Party for what it is.
Mostly Libertarians, Far right Republicans, Confederates, and a fair amount of the gullible .
You guys keep stumping on dismantling Govt. Keep saying the you want to privatize Social Security. Keep saying that you want to use vouchers for MediCare.
Keep saying that you want to get rid of the Dept of Education.
Keep saying that you want people of Hispanic origins to have to prove that they are citizens . You can't just stop someone on the street and make them prove their status.
I'm against illegal immigration too. I think the whole country is against that. My solution? Fine the people who employ them. Jail time. From the home owner up to big biz. Bust them all. Make it so they don't want to come here. You can't just round all of them and deport them.  There's too many.
I guess that's your fault dad. You never should have given them amnesty.

89  Reagan would be considered a Liberal nowadays compared to the current GOp and Teabaggers.

Son, this isn't one of your more lucid days is it?

You really should consider not doing drugs anymore, m'kay Ron Jr.?  Study history, and you'll find that I was farther right that the collection of Republican and Democrat/Independant voters that comprise the TEA Party movement.

It is so sad to see you try to co-opt your father's great name because you are worthless in your own right.

It's not that our liberal friends are ignorant...it's just that they know so much that just isn't true.

Posted by: Ronald Reagan - Greatest President of the 20th Century at July 18, 2010 07:21 AM (7mXZ/)

91  Dad, you've stopped taking your meds again.
You know you get psychotic when you do that.
I know when you raised taxes 3 times, it made you look bad.
I know when you taxed people's unemployment, made you look bad.
I know when you did nothing about the Marine barracks in Lebanon made you look bad.
I know that when you gave all the illegals amnesty made you look bad.
I know when the whole Iran Contra thing happened, you looked very bad.
I know when you pushed for the Brady bill, you looked bad.
I know when you came up with NAFTA, you looked bad.
Hmmmm? I guess you weren't all that great after all.
And by comparison, you would be considered a liberal. Compared to the current GOp. And, the teabaggers.
Take your meds dad. You're not making any sense.
Of course, common sense isn't a conservative strong point.
Just look at the previous administration. They broke the bank..

I feel terrible for you son; that AZT must really do a number on your mental faculties, huh?  At least you have an excuse for being a mental midget...most other libs are just retarded by personal choice.

Really? I've been present at most all of them in some way, shape or form.   Haven't seen you at any of them.  Which ones have you been to?

Fibber; we know you've been too busy making liberal moonbat heads explode simply by getting up in the morning, you rascal, you.

95  Dad, you're babbling again. Here, let me get you a handkerchief for all that drool.
I know you can't help it.  Maybe Mom can tie you up and gag you again. You know how you make an ass out of yourself when you babble and drool like that.
Sis says to say hi. But she still thinks you're all fooked up.
Mom thinks it's time to send you away.
I'm surprised they let you finish out your term. Being you had a degenerative brain disease and all. Good thing Poppy Bush was there to run the show for you. Ya gotta luv his father, Prescott. Up standing Con.
Then there's Dumbya. And some people want Sarah.
 What? Wasn't Dumbya bad enough?
The definition of insanity applies here. You clowns keep doing the same thing over and over, expecting different results.
I know you can't help it Dad. But those friends of yours are such bozo's.
Not a brain cell amongst them.

Son, stay where you are--we're on our way over to pick you up.  I'm really sorry Ron Jr., but we're going to have to bring you to that nice big white building again.  You remember, the mental hospital?  The nice place that gave you all sorts of nice pills to go with your pudding?  Yeah...now you remember!  That;'s right...little Ronny Jr is gonna go on a trip to Thorazine Land again!

I know we can't cure you of your stupidity, but maybe we can try to drug the liberal batshit insanity from your pot-addled mind.

(Damn, Nancy--this son of mine is a total dipshit--when can I disown his liberal ass?)

Posted by: Ronald Reagan - Greatest President of the 20th Century at July 19, 2010 06:49 PM (7mXZ/)

97 This is very good. You will notice that she is not trying to lead the Tea Party. She is trying to support the Tea Party. Demint also gets this as demonstrated by his comment at one of the rallies where he said, "I am not talking to you. I am standing with you."

There is a reason this approach is better. It has to do with the Tea Party structure as a complex adaptive system. Such a structure can be actually be measure and understood. Doing so helps add clarity to what many find to be a confusing situation.

I posted an explanation here that some might find helpful.
