MichellO's Plastic Turkey Moment
— Gabriel Malor

Of course, President Bush didn't actually serve a plastic turkey for Thanksgiving. The idiot left and their community-based reality made that up and even the NY Times ran a correction noting that the turkey was real, not fake. But that hasn't stopped roughly half of Americans from believing in the myth of the plastic turkey.

The Left milked that non-event for all it was worth, squawking about phony presidents and staged photo-ops. Enter Michelle Obama, who couldn't be more fake.

For months, the Food Network ran ads about a forthcoming episode of “Iron Chef America,” its flagship chefs plus secret ingredient versus time competition. The show would take place at the White House garden, with Michelle Obama making a cameo and plugging her responsible-eating initiative. The network promised it would be its biggest episode ever.

The buildup matched the reality: The Jan. 3 “Iron Chef America” drew 7.6 million viewers, the highest-rated show in network history. In it, superstar chef Mario Batali teamed with Emeril Lagasse, and Bobby Flay with White House chef Cristeta Comerford to cook five dishes using the secret ingredient: produce from the White House garden.

Except for one thing: As first reported on AOLÂ’s Politics Daily blog, the fruits and vegetables used on the show werenÂ’t from the White House. They were stunt produce. Ringers.

All about the photo op.

Can that possibly be true?  If so, the viewing public must be truly desperate for entertainment.  Sheesh.

6 You know, when I first heard about this, I thought "huh, I thought you couldn't use the stuff from the garden because the soil is contaminated".  I didn't really pay any more attention to it because I presumed that the WH wouldn't be so stupid as to think they'd get away with it.

I saw a re-run, vaguely curious as I'm a bit of a vegetable gardener myself. The garden looked fantastic, but I figured that was likely due to a team of round the clock professional gardeners. I did find the amount of honey produced by the hive to be a little. . . unbelievable. And the lack of companion planting indicated that the garden wasn't as thoroughly organic as advertised. . . (I do this do to little space and incurable desire to grow things. I think I'm part hobbit. . .)

Kinda disappointed that the veggies weren't the actual White House ones, but not all that surprised. I hadn't heard about the contamination. The whole thing was a bit gimmicky, as much as I love the chefs involved (despite their politics. They make good food, dammit!). And Michelle's outfit was totally weird. . . prom-dress and too-small-cardigan. weird.

*sigh* I knew the whole thing was too interesting to be true. . . back to my own planning for spring. . .

42 ace -

fellow morons

IRONY ALERT!

When First Lady Michelle Obama planted an organic vegetable garden on the White House lawn in March 2009, she hoped to both set an example of healthy eating and to grow tasty edibles for her daughters and husband. But Michelle's organic dream has been dashed by a nasty toxic legacy lurking in the soils of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. It turns out that a previous Presidential gardening team [Clinton's] had used sewage sludge for fertilizer.

This is a fairly common practice with one huge problem. Sewage sludge tends to be laced with anything that people pour down the drain and often contains heavy metals. Not surprisingly, the National Park Service tested the dirt beneath Michelle's garden and found the plot has highly elevated levels of lead averaging 93 parts per million. That's below the 400 ppm that the Environmental Protection Agency says is a threat to human health.

Oops.

45 slightly O/T, but who thinks it's a good idea for MO to make childhood obesity her signature issue? 46 Alton Brown seems more stable minded to be considered an out-and-out leftie. The most 'out there' episode of Good Eats I've seen is the episode where he talks about responsible eating (eating further down the food chain). This isn't exactly a leftist standpoint... ask any hunter out there about sustainability. When your way of life depends on a food source, odds are pretty good that you'll care about how sustainable that food source is. It's the lefties that go all dogma either way on this issue.

Hey!  Where's the love?  This is so last night!  ;-)

198

“With about 4.6 million viewers, it was the highest rated and most-watched show in Food Network's history," yet most were duped.  Various participants in the show misled viewers with references to "using radishes from the White House garden" and other similar mentions. Viewers were not explicitly told that the vegetables in "Kitchen Stadium" were not the ones they had seen the chefÂ’s harvest.  Why not?  Turns out thereÂ’s  a great reason for that. The food in the White House garden has been deemed toxic. They knew this last year, so the whole scene of picking food from the White House garden was as fraudulent as President ObamaÂ’s promise to put the health-care debate on C-SPAN.

The problem stems from a previous administrationÂ’s having used sewage sludge for fertilizer. Which means it will never be certified organic.

There ya go again, blaming the Bush administration.  Right?  Oh, you say, it was the Clinton administration?

Well, letÂ’s get back to the important stuff.  Sara Palin didnÂ’t create an index in Going Rogue!!!  That means I have to read it to see if IÂ’m in it.  Waaaaaaa.

284 But the show did not disclose that "stunt double vegetables" were used and not produce from the First Family's garden.

Mrs. Obama's East Wing told me the vegetables picked at the White House garden that day in October were donated to a local food kitchen, so nothing went to waste.

So explain this to me, as IÂ’m just a moron.  If the stuff is “deemed toxic,” why are they giving it to food kitchens?

83 There was no way they could have used the actual vegetables from the WH garden.
They had to fly a whole crew from NYC to DC and then they filmed all day at the WH. Were the chefs supposed to fly back to DC and spend all night filming the show too? Not gonna happen. So then the vegetables would have been a day old and look like crap. Solution? Fresh vegetables. It is a cooking show with professional chefs after all. Picking that as the theme ingrediant was just stupid to begin with.

86 From that Politico page it seems Alton Brown is in an early stage of Stossel-ism. I won't write him off yet, and besides I've never seen any lefty-ism on his shows. He actually pokes alot of fun at the government.
Although the "Eat local, eat sustainable" stick is tired and obnoxious.

I watched the end of that episode, so I missed Michelle O. but I distinctly recall Emeril and Batoli praising several times the "high quality" of the vegetables from the White House garden with the implication that was what they were using. I told my wife that if those vegetable came from the White House garden then it was probably the professional gardeners doing all the work. MO, being a city gal, has probably never gardened in her life.

It really didn't occur to me to suspect out right lying, but I should have.

I don't think there's anything particularly lefty about eating fresh food and supporting sustainable agriculture.  I mean, it sounds a bit hippie on the surface, but it's actually delicious and market-smart.  True, preaching about what people should eat seems lefty...

89 It's not hard to be a locovore when everything you need from the starter salad through the main course and sides, to the dessert, including the milk, juices, wines and beers are all produced within an hour of where I live.

There's a couple of different "behind the scenes" stories about ICA out on the web. When I saw that the Klingon-in-Chief was going to be a judge, my interest in the show went out the window. Finding out that the WH Veggie Garden grew some *literally* killer produce is like the ising on the cake and a prime example of all the problems with the current administration.

90 The First Klingons' garden was first under scrutiny back in June of last year, when she brought a bunch of kids out there to supposedly harvest nicely ripe produce after only 60 days of growing time.....

No lie is too big or too small for these people!

Well Batali's the dude -- makes great food and is a NASCAR fan...come on...

I wonder if it was rigged, and that's why Mario lost (because God knows freaking Bobby Flay is a big ol loser most of the time on that show).  Which is fine by me because I can't stand Bobby Flay.

And the "eat local" deal really isn't all that bad an idea -- you are helping to support small, independent farmers and businesses when you go to the local farmer's market.  And if you raise your own food, even if it's just some patio tomaters, you are taking at least a little step towards being more self sufficient.

Of course, the nanny statists hate this with a passion and would love to regulate and tax the crap out of it, so only a few small, specialty, "organic" gourmet places are left -- to service them of course.  Arugula for me, but not for thee.

93 Easy enough to tell if you are a veggie gardener yourself. Those things wouldn't ripen at the same time. Sweet potatoes are long season tubers, and I'm not even sure DC would have enough growing season for them? And tomatillos? Who the hell grows those? They shoulda settled for the All American seed package from Burpee...

94 michelle obama...talk about lipstick on a pig. she has absolutely NO class. she is built like a linebacker, and is F-A-T. there i said it, she's FAT. her ass is the size of a refrigerator, and her feet have got to be about a size 13. and the arms...god, i am sooooooo sick and tired of seeing her big jiggly arms. and let's not forget that furrowed brow and the look being perpetually pissed off.

ugh. she makes me want to throw up. ugh...

96 I proudly eat "locally" and "sustainably" and I'm about as red-state Conservative as it comes.
