— Ace Blame Bush for this-- the guy was unpopular when he left, but apparently not unpopular enough for Democrats to keep buttering their bread with him.
A prominent Democratic pollster is circulating a survey that shows George W. Bush is 6 points more popular than President Obama in “Frontline” districts — seats held by Democrats that the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee sees as most vulnerable to Republican takeover. That Bush is more popular than Obama in Democratic-held seats is cause for outright fear.
Ed linked this earlier, with his take.
This Hotline piece is mostly a lot of obvious stuff-- use Obama for discreet (no cameras!) fundraising, make each election individual and personal, etc. -- but damn, there is this quote:
"He is a walking radioactive disaster," one senior Democratic operative said of the president.
Many people keep offering Mr. Wolf's advice (as usual, his version of it as offered on his cameo on Sesame Street): Gentlement, let's not start soaping each other's backs just yet.
And at this point, I guess I have to really endorse that. This is no point for complacency or just assuming outside forces are going to make this happen.
There are no outside forces. Every American citizen is a force of one. When Americans decide to skip out on their civic, patriotic duty and leave elections up to other people, or to the impersonal, irresistible outside forces that don't actually exist, bad things happen.
There is no "wave" here except the wave we make. We are the wave. And if you're not registered to vote -- you're not the wave. If you're not planning on voting -- you're not the wave. If you're not emailing relatives you know lean right and encouraging them to check Obama's power, to stand up and be counted -- you're not the wave.
There will be no wave at all unless we set our minds on making it happen. Obama's popularity in polls will not restrain him -- we have seen that already. We saw him arrogantly demanding ObamaCare despite 60+% opinion (and strong opinion) against it.
He actually -- kind of -- doesn't care about polls. Maybe that is to his credit. Maybe not; I think he takes a perverse delight in thwarting you, defying you. Making your lives worse.
But he doesn't care much about polls. He doesn't care about what you believe, what you think, what you want. He only cares about power-- and power comes from elections. He cares about what he has the power to do, over your objections.
There is only one way to restrain that power. And just taking pleasure in bad polls isn't it.
We're not sending a message here in this election -- messages mean nothing.
We are sending an opposition. We are sending a majority hostile to his plans for continued socialization of the United States. We are sending a Congressional investigators armed with the subpoena power and the power to put witnesses under oath -- and recommend them for perjury charges, should they lie.
We are not sending a message: it remains in the power of the target of the message as to whether or not he will respond, comply, or defy.
We are sending something he will have little choice but to comply with. That's not a message he can ignore at his whim. That's a reality inflicted upon him by voters which he has no choice but to bend to.
We are sending a hard limit to Obama's power. We are sending America back to Congress.
Don't forget that. And I know some of you feel so burned by politics or GOP betrayals and all of that. I know that. I know many readers here, despite their apparent interest in politics, actually dropped out of the system years ago and now are entirely spectators.
Obama won on a crushing wave of such similarly-disaffected voters coming back into the system to make their voices heard for once in decades.
You saw the power of that.
Please show Obama the power of that as well, but going the opposite way.
It is the contention of many of those disaffected with the system, of conventional two-party politics, that if conservatives would just show what a potent force they really are, the GOP would stop trying to encourage moderates to vote their way and instead focus on disaffected hard-right conservatives to vote their way.
Well, on that score, it's put up or shut up time. Because if you're still sitting out this election, after all you have seen, after the ruin visited upon our country, after socialism has galloped ahead so quickly and so heedlessly -- if at this point you still will not undertake your basic American duty to cast a ballot on election day, then it is clear you never will, and it is clear there is no point whatsoever in chasing your vote, for your vote will never be cast.
You will then have decided to simply live as a spectator in your own political life, leaving the decisions most important to you to other people and to chance, and in that case, the GOP is quite right, on a rational, pragmatic, utilitarian level, to simply ignore you forever and chase the independents and moderates who do vote.
The choice is yours, and the choice could determine the path of American progress or ruin for the next forty years.

Hey, you know what my contribution to this tsunami is going to be? Voting for Chuck Smith against Bobby Scott, D-VA-03, in a district that's something like D+25. Scott's run unopposed in most cycles and averages around 70% of the vote.
Two years of pure purple outrage, and... that's it. Touching one futile button on the screen.

Kinda bugs me when Ed "Poppin' Fresh" Morrissey gets drawn into the discussion, though. I don't dig squishes who dilute every strong stand with "in fairness..." or seem to worried about the minute ups and downs of polls.
Nor, for that matter, do I want to align myself with people who so fear words that their filters block out words like "revolution."

Aug. 19 (Bloomberg) -- President Barack Obama said the jump in unemployment claims shows the urgent need for congressional action on legislation to cut taxes and ease credit for small businesses.
Obama once again called on Republicans to stop blocking the measure and said lawmakers should take up the bill when they reconvene in September.
“Small businesses and community banks that loan to small businesses have been lagging behind,” Obama said at the White House before he and his family leave for a holiday on Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts. “If we want this economy to create more jobs more quickly, we need to help them.”
Either he's this out of touch with reality or someone needs to change the script in the Royal Teleprompter. What are Republicans blocking to help small business? Barry's increased taxes and regulations on them

I think the entire "it's Bushitler's fault" has bit them in the ass. It has become a punch line now for almost everyone but the left, who, continues to use for all occasions.
In America we always pull for the underdog. No, I'm not saying that a former president is an underdog, but when you constantly blame one person for all ills and your own mistakes, people ascribe underdog type projections on that person.
In short, fuck a bunch of Obama.

I researched all their primary candidates, printed sample ballots for their district, and filled them out. Then I asked them all to have a girl's night out on that night. (the pols closed at 7:30 in their district). I told them all I would pick them up around 6:00.
Once I had them all in the car, I drove straight to their polling place. You should have seen their faces when I pulled in. I told them all I would leave them there, if they didn't go in and vote. Well, they did, and when each one of them came out I asked how they felt. To a person, they said they felt good about it, and was glad I had done what I did, and they were surprised it didn't take as long as they thought.
Don't have to worry about them voting again, but I have a few more that I plan to do the same thing with in November.

And that I ask in lieu of any Xmas/Birthday gift. I actually wanted to say don't bother sending one otherwise, but thought better.
Am I buying votes? I sure as hell am trying. If only we could each convert one. Penpals or somtin. Pull all stops nov here we come.

I always vote -- every election (I don't do primaries every time, but generals, yeah), just because.
I've got everyone in my family who can be persuaded going out to vote...and...I've got about 2 dozen former registered Dems, who are all fired up and ready to vote -- straight party line GOP (amazing what happens to people when times are tight and their party basically spits on them). We're meeting for a "vote party" (that way we can keep each other fired up and ready to roll).

I know you take a lot of smack for being too moderate at times and being too willing to accept moderate candidates. I don't know all of your stances, but it's likely you're more moderate than me, as I'm just to the right of Limbaugh, Reagan, and Thomas. But, I will say that your postings in the last couple of weeks have been spot on. Just the right amount of rah rah, red meat, win one for the Gipper (see what I did there) with a reasoned, yet edgy delivery.

The party schism is on the right, for sure. I'm talking about the unwillingness on the left to embrace a central party theme, at least superficially. When Reid starts questioning the wisdom of the GZ mosque my bullshit meter shorts out.

This time it's different. Guaranteed. That 40%, which I'm a part (61 yo and never been more pissed off), and a Tea Partier (www.mosov.org) will see to it that whoever we send to Plant DC will NOT go soft. If they use either "cross the aisle" or "bipartisanship" just once, they the voices will be deafening. They will be watched like a hawk on a perpetual basis.
That 40% will never leave the protest sidewalk again and go back into the house. We have taken up permanent residence on that said sidewalk.

Cost me more than $130 to get it fixed. Especially when the first (national Big Time computer-fixer chain that has its techs drive around in VW Beetles *coughs*) repair lasted a matter of hours and the damn pop-ups were in control again.
And as for my feelings about the Tepid Air crowd: they represent what I consider bad news for conservatives. We cannot win if we backtrack, equivocate, play "fair" and revel in "nuance." Honesty and directness are the only policies, IMO.

Berserker, #166: ... what they believe in, what makes them tick ...
The way I see it, there are two types of government -- there's the type where other people tell you what to do and exert their control over you, and there's the type where you decide matters over your life and property. I say "government" in the broadest possible sense, encompassing pretty much all human interactions. For lack of better terms, the first is tyranny, the second is freedom.
Each is appropriate in a certain setting. Tyranny (at its best) describes what parents do with their 1-year-old children and what companies do with new hires, for examples. Mentally handicapped people are also subject to a level of tyranny, depending on the level of their handicap. When a cop tells a driver to do something, the driver complies. Tyranny is part of life, and it's good -- but only sometimes.
But there are people who like to be on the upper side of these interactions, just because. They take a perverse pleasure in telling you what to do. The more arbitrary their power, and the more their subjects suffer, the more they like it. These are the sadists who become the religion cops in Taliban Afghanistan or join the Gestapo or become street toughs hassling people on buses. It's a power thing, and it strikes me as demonic.
Consider: Bush didn't have overwhelming support for invading Iraq. He responded by trying to increase popular support for the invasion. He was going to do it anyway because he thought it best, but he also tried to convince everyday Americans that it was best. This is why I consider Bush to be a great president -- not because his decision was correct, but his authority was wielded respectfully and in the service of those who gave it to him.
Obama, on the other hand, considered the passage of the health care bill to be a victory even though six out of ten people opposed it. The thing is that he didn't even try to convince me that this was a good thing. He was all about the votes. It's as though he didn't care what popular support he had -- or, worse, he cared but preferred more opposition. (Ace has pointed this out; as commenters have pointed out, he's been on fire lately.)
As far as what people like these believe in, I'm convinced there's no philosophy or worldview they hold in common except for this: You belong to them. There are no limits to this -- they'll take part of your money, then the rest of your money, then your stuff, then your soul. And they're everywhere.
Then again, so are we, and this November we have to, have to, have to step forward and be counted, each and every one of us.
(Sorry for being all verbose and stuff. I hope there's something useful here.)

theyve celebritized the presidency and politics in general, but theyll never learn. just as with hollywood, so the same with them. people liked lindsay lohan at first didnt they...now everyone laughs and agrees shes an annoying piece of garbage. same thing with obama, and as we all know, its more fun to tear someone down after theyve been so high up.
obama and the democrats arent going to just "wake up" tomorrow and shift the polls, theyre only gonna get worse, or at the least, stay right where they are- loathed. i think these elections in november will only make them angrier despite their stupid smiles and the eventual 'this loss is actually good for the dems' crap we're gonna hear from the media. this is gonna be an epic pounding of epic proportions.
