When we had primaries here I had about 6 friends in another district that I knew had never voted in primary races.   Always acted as if they didn't have time.    I researched all their primary candidates, printed sample ballots for their district, and filled them out.   Then I asked them all to have a girl's night out on that night.    (the pols closed at 7:30 in their district).    I told them all I would pick them up around 6:00.  

Once I had them all in the car, I drove straight to their polling place.    You should have seen their faces when I pulled in.   I told them all I would leave them there, if they didn't go in and vote.    Well, they did, and when each one of them came out I asked how they felt.   To a person, they said they felt good about it, and was glad I had done what I did, and they were surprised it didn't take as long as they thought.

Don't have to worry about them voting again, but I have a few more that I plan to do the same thing with in November.

The way I see it, there are two types of government -- there's the type where other people tell you what to do and exert their control over you, and there's the type where you decide matters over your life and property. I say "government" in the broadest possible sense, encompassing pretty much all human interactions. For lack of better terms, the first is tyranny, the second is freedom.

Each is appropriate in a certain setting. Tyranny (at its best) describes what parents do with their 1-year-old children and what companies do with new hires, for examples. Mentally handicapped people are also subject to a level of tyranny, depending on the level of their handicap. When a cop tells a driver to do something, the driver complies. Tyranny is part of life, and it's good -- but only sometimes.

But there are people who like to be on the upper side of these interactions, just because. They take a perverse pleasure in telling you what to do. The more arbitrary their power, and the more their subjects suffer, the more they like it. These are the sadists who become the religion cops in Taliban Afghanistan or join the Gestapo or become street toughs hassling people on buses. It's a power thing, and it strikes me as demonic.

Consider: Bush didn't have overwhelming support for invading Iraq. He responded by trying to increase popular support for the invasion. He was going to do it anyway because he thought it best, but he also tried to convince everyday Americans that it was best. This is why I consider Bush to be a great president -- not because his decision was correct, but his authority was wielded respectfully and in the service of those who gave it to him.

Obama, on the other hand, considered the passage of the health care bill to be a victory even though six out of ten people opposed it. The thing is that he didn't even try to convince me that this was a good thing. He was all about the votes. It's as though he didn't care what popular support he had -- or, worse, he cared but preferred more opposition. (Ace has pointed this out; as commenters have pointed out, he's been on fire lately.)

As far as what people like these believe in, I'm convinced there's no philosophy or worldview they hold in common except for this: You belong to them. There are no limits to this -- they'll take part of your money, then the rest of your money, then your stuff, then your soul. And they're everywhere.

Then again, so are we, and this November we have to, have to, have to step forward and be counted, each and every one of us.

210 The error here is in thinking that what matters is what the elected officials do, and therefore, what influence can be exercised over them. That is wrong. Votes do not determine reality. Reality does not follow elections. The elected must of necessity obey reality. They can pretend not to for a while, but the longer they do so, the harder it bites them in the end. Ace hasn't figured this out. I keep seeing posts here about Obama's poll numbers. He has been in the 40s for the past six months: NOTHING SIGNIFICANT HAS CHANGED. A significant fraction of the population of the USA was capable of voting for the man in the first place, and are not likely to change their minds: that is the real, basic, problem. The electoral course is a dead end. We will not be voting our way out of this situation, and the Tea Party, as admirable as its ideals are, will not have any serious impact on the current progress of events. Electing Republicans this year will just be one more part of liberalism's two-steps-forward-one-step-back dance. Republicans are constitutionally incapable of actually opposing liberalism, as they are fundamentally liberal themselves. The only way out is through. (Oh, and Reagan? As governor of CA, signed the first no-fault divorce law in the country. Yeah, great job there. That's eaten away at this society more than just about anything else that's happened. The verdict of history is not yet complete on this man.)
