2 God, I miss him.

I didn't like a lot of his domestic policy, but I never doubted that he loved America.

God bless you too, W.

I can't wait to see what the Bush Policy Institute churns out.

And I wish President Bush would speak up on certain things such as Israel, terrorism, etc.

4 I do not miss Bush. Terry Schiavo, bailouts, amnesty, bizarre war in Iraq...

I do, however, miss Ms. Beasley.

5 Nice to someone with a soft spot for ol' Jorge. He'll always be known as the George bookend at the far end of the republic. At this point, even his wife wouldn't vote for him.

There's nobody here that'll say W was the best President evar, but he's certainly a lot better than the Obamanation we have now.

And I'll bet W can produce a long-form birth certificate.

/Couldn't resist the birther shot.

He has integrity, he was honest to a fault, but he wasn't a great president.

I will always be appreciative of him, but the spending he didn't veto just piled on to our current problems.

My feelings are mixed on Bush. I disagreed with about half of what he did, but he was a good man.

Mallamutt.

He really should have made some budget cuts to offset the tax cuts. I know the tax cuts result in increased revenue, but that doesn't show up on the balance sheet because the government just spends the increased revenue they receive.

The budget deficits were inexcusable.

I've always been of the opinion that if you think a war is worth fighting, that you should be willing to part with spending programs to help pay for it.

In the lead up to the Iraq war, when the democrats were voting in lock step with the republicans, he should have come up with a better way to fund the war than through borrowing. He should have had in the Iraq War resolution some massive cuts elsewhere that he could directly point to being used to pay for our soldiers. The dems would not have been able to politically vote against it at the time.

but hey, hindsight is 20/20 right?

Bush was a mediocre president. Better than Clinton and Obama, but he was an underachiever in the White House.

We had our boots on the throats of the Democrats and could've set them back 50 years. Instead Bush and the useless leaders in Congress let 'em off the hook.

Obama is a complete failure and still has pretty good ratings. Why? Because the Democrat party is much better at politics than the GOP. This is cause for concern. They're failures and yet they're still winning the PR war, easily.

Preznit Prissypants McTarballs doesn't especially care for the military.  And they know it.  I'm sure he considers them a bunch of mouth-breathing knuckle-draggers  who are doing what they do because they could never aspire to his intellectual "achievements" at Hahvahd.  Oh, and there's all that "caring" he exhibits as a community organizer.

Mallamutt. I agree. i don't blame him entirely, but he could have used his bully pulpit more, used the veto pen, or requested new leadership in the house and senate. Delay was an ass, and Hastert was a fool.

As for whoever was talking about Obama. He is in the 40s and he is in his second year. He has the potential to become a lame duck 2 years into his presidency in november. i wouldn't call that a political success.

Posted by: Ben at June 11, 2010 08:37 AM (wuv1c)

35 @35
I agree with that assessment.  Bush ran as - and tried to govern as - a uniter.

It is a testament to his personal inner strength that he withstood the vicious criticism leveled at him all those years without cracking, particularly since the characterization of him by his enemies was that he was some sort of evil, power mad super-villain (while at the same time being a moronic boob).  Nothing could be further from the truth.

Contrast that with Obama's thin-skinned reaction to even the mildest criticism.  I think there is a very real chance Obama will crack and either OD or something during his presidency.

Whatever Bush's flaws as a President, he was motivated by love for this country and belief in doing what was right.

I think he did an excellent job under extremely difficult conditions at taking the fight to the terrorists and off of our soil and that was what mattered most, particularly in his first term.

41 Bush began 2 wars that he could not end. Economically the USA did poorly. He wanted to have 2 wars while cutting taxes especially for the rich. The rich were paying twice as much during and after WW II and we were able to pay off a 100% GNP sized debt quickly

At the end, I was really tired of 'defending' W.  Certainly not after the 'crash' of summer 08.

And I get mad everytime I hear someone says W is the reason we got Obama.

Oh, yeah?  There were lots of reasons we ended up with Obama, only people too lazy to think will say W was the cause.

Michael Collins - you don't know what the hell you're talking about.

1. The effective tax rate on the "rich" has remained around 25% for the last 60+ years in spite of changes to marginal tax rates.  Raising marginal tax rates to 90% did nothing but chase capital out of the economy.  That's why that famed right-wing nutball, JOHN F. KENNEDY ran on cutting the top marginal rates.  He wanted to increase government revenue by increasing economic growth.

2. Bush's tax cuts reduced rates for EVERYONE, especially the poor.  I'm sure you don't understand basic math, but cutting the lowest marginal rate from 15% to 10% is a lot bigger cut than trimming the top rate from 38% to 33%.  Not only that, but Bush doubled the child tax credit, which had a major impact on the working class and middle class.  Personally, Bush's tax cuts for the "rich" have saved me approximately $2500 a year in federal income taxes - and I ain't rich.

3. REVENUES INCREASED dramatically following the implementation of Bush's tax cuts.  The government was taking in about 2.1 trillion in 2001.  By 2007, revenues had increased to about 2.75 trillion.  That's a gigantic increase.  Unfortunately, Congress spent money at even a more torrid pace, causing the United States to run deficits.

Looks like Bush is running for President again. At least that is what I understood Nancy Pelosi was saying on the TV a few minutes ago. Their main campaign will be to run against the Republicans who know/knew Bush or ever heard of him. (Something like that.)

Her  flat eyes are something like dinner plates. Souless  dinner plates. Disturbing.

Wooden stake. Hammer. Pelosi. Some assembly required.

52 In a way, this video is a microcosm of what was good and bad about W.  He humbly thanks everybody for asking about him and for the privilege of serving (anybody see O doing that, at any point, ever?) and then starts talking some shit about "global health."  WTF?

Oh, and the comments under the video are... most instructive.  My personal favorite begins:  "You are a sick old man and soon you will sicken and die.  This brings me great joy."

My feelings are mixed on Bush. I disagreed with about half of what he did, but he was a good man.

That pretty much sums it up for me.  As I posted in a recent thread, his 2nd term approvals were so abysmal because the left hated him no matter what, and the right, much of which actually has some intellectual integrity, washed our hands of him once the spending and the shamnisty crap got out of control.  At the same time the left was screeching about what a horrible fascist dictator he was, he doomed himself by governing too far to the left.  I do admire him a great deal, as I do Sarah Palin, for remaining classy (to a fault) about the absolutely horrific vitriol hurled his way.  I like him and his wife personally very much, but I will never think of his administration without a great deal of frustration.

As Beck kept saying throughout the 2nd term, "What happened to the guy on the firetruck with the bullhorn?  Where'd he go?"

Why would I ever miss Bush? The last year he had congress (2006) I made almost 70k, in Year 2 of the Glorious Reign of Barack the Magnificent I've been unemployed since Jan. Now I can pursue my life-long dream to be an Artist like Nancy says. That evil Bush made all of us work for a living, but Barack(bless His holy Name) has set us free.

All seriousness aside, there were things I diagreed with W on. No Child being one, but I know that Bush truly believed that education is the key to any kind of decent life in this world, not a way to pay back a union. TARP, what we have now was not what he intended. As for his lack of vetoes, remember he had to keep a majority of Congress on his side, and not all the backstabbers were Dems.

He managed to handle all the crap thrown at him from both sides with a grace and serenity that I know I would not have had. And neither would most other people.

57 Terrific inaugural speech, I've posted parts of it several times and they're always well received. President Bush was the right, and very great, man at the right time despite his flaws. He was a great president and I'm proud I voted for him twice. He wouldn't be my first choice, but in the time and place he was, he was golden. Certainly I'd have voted for him over the two bozos we had up last time.
