Momentum Watch in the Miami Herald
— Gabriel Malor

Last week I wrote about keeping an eye on spin in MFM articles about polls, particularly spin leading to conclusions about momentum.

Momentum is a placeholder for "energy." If a candidate has momentum, then he's doing better and, more importantly, his supporters believe they are doing better. There's a psychological benefit to being on the team whose fortunes are looking up. This is particularly attractive for the weakminded independents who haven't picked a team yet. Which means, even more importantly, the person with momentum can pick off wavering voters, that is someone with a slight, but not compelling preference for another candidate.

This, of course, adds to the impression that the momentum-designated candidate has momentum and causes other voters to vacillate. So on and so forth until there's a sudden rush to the candidate with momentum. People want to vote for a winner, especially if there's some heartwarming underdog bullshit.

Which leads me to this article from the Miami Herald this morning. The headline:

Democrat Kendrick Meek advances uphill in Senate race against Crist, Rubio

Now right there, just the headline and seeing nothing else (a not uncommon situation for news consumers), it gives the impression that Meek has momentum. That he's making important gains against Crist and Rubio. It signals to Democrats and independents who may be thinking about supporting Crist that Meek isn't a dead candidate. That they should think about coming over to the winning guy.

Now let's look at the article. First and second paragraphs are about black leaders rallying to Meek. Then:

On paper, the 44-year-old Meek appears to be a dream candidate for the Democratic Party: A loyal disciple in Congress and the Florida Legislature known for scuffling with former Republican Gov. Jeb Bush. The first statewide candidate to qualify for the Florida ballot by gathering voter signatures, about 125,000 in all. The victorious underdog in last month's Democratic primary against a hard-charging billionaire.

There's so much cocksucking going on in that paragraph, the writer couldn't even use complete sentences. Keep reading:

Still, Crist — who cast off his lifelong Republican affiliation just five months ago to avert a drubbing by Marco Rubio in the GOP primary — continues to peel away enough Democrats to keep Meek at bay. But the tide is turning, according to a Mason-Dixon poll released Saturday that showed Meek in striking distance of Crist.

Translation: "Hey indeptards, he's a "dream candidate" and his campaign is rockin! You know, because it said it right there in the Miami Herald. Meek's campaign is going to run TV and radio ads quoting this!"

And now a small dose of reality. Here's the fifth paragraph, for the two people who read that far down in a Miami Herald article:

The survey found Rubio expanding his lead to 40 percent, Crist slipping to 28 percent and Meek rising to 23 percent. The Sept. 20-22 survey of 625 likely voters has a margin of error of 4 percentage points.

Homo sez whut? Meek, the "dream candidate" who has "advanced uphill" and for whom "the tide is turning" is still losing. No change. No change means no momentum. He's slightly made up ground on Crist, who is...wait for it...also losing. No change. No momentum at all. This is a lame-ass love-letter.

This isn't good news for Meek. This is awful news for Crist. And this such fantastically good news for Rubio, I want to dip my balls in it. The number-one fear for his campaign is that Meek would look so weak that loss-averse Dems and independents would pull the lever for Crist just to avoid having Rubio win.

No fear of that now.

The MFM are so eager to designate Meek the candidate with momentum, they're helping out Rubio. None of which would be an issue, if the author hadn't attempted the momentum spin "Meek advances uphill against Rubio, Crist; the tide is turning!" While technically true, so is this: "Meek still trails Rubio by 17 points; he's going to lose."

And did you catch that one little detail? Look again:

The survey found Rubio expanding his lead to 40 percent, Crist slipping to 28 percent and Meek rising to 23 percent.

Ah ha! See it now? Rubio is the candidate "advancing uphill." He expanded his lead. He's got momentum and he's winning.

29 Don,

I am an independent because I can't stand the libs/dems and what they stand for and the republicans look the same to me but in better Italian suits.  I think that independents have noticed, possibly before everyone else, that it is all about power and keeping the power and not so much about principle and party.  Who wants to join a party that stands for nothing?

Fox just had a debate where that nasty girl who makes those 7th grade girl faces when talking about the republicans basically said that the republican party is the party of the rich and the middle class can just go to hell.  She said it hasn't been that long since the republicans left office and the dems are going to remind them of how they felt.

I'm all for that.  Most people had a nice job and a nice house while GWB was president.  GWB was pushing the education billion dollar business to show it's worth.   No one was trying to build a mosque two blocks from ground zero.  We were moving toward tweeking health care not bombing it out of existence.  Charities were thriving because hey when you are doing well you want to make sure everyone has that chance.

79 The DoD didn't properly vet the book, so they bought the first run of 9500 copies. The redacted second printing is available.

No it was properly vetted for security during the Bush years. But it had no been vetted for embarrassment of the Clinton years for a warning about Mohamed Atta, e.g. Able Danger.

So the Democrat vetting is using taxpayer funds to burn the books.

except, the army had already vetted the book and the author, when interviewed on fox said that everything in the book was readily available and findable on the internet and other places.  the only disturbing thing he said was that some of his material was taken out of his office and that he had to threaten to include his testimony in the book in order for his point to be made.  That's concerning.  But hey, the book is selling like hot cakes so I guess they inadvertently gave him a ton of free press.

with all due respect, I don't agree with this.

I am a registered independent, I used to be a democrat.  I have found only those independents who don't know what they actually believe in are the ones who sway one side one year and the other side the next year.

The independent minded independents tend to be libaeratarians and conservatives, (barring stances on social issues.)

Posted by: johnc_recent_EX-dem at September 26, 2010 09:39 AM (ACkhT)

83 All you guys are making the classic mistake with this shit about the "independents". You are confusing the term "independent" with "undecided". About 30% of the population call themselves "independent". All that means is that they are not a registered member of a party.

You will find more of these independents in States with an open primary since you don't have to be a member of the Party to vote in the primary.

But the fact is that the independents almost always vote for one Party or another. On a very small percentage swap back and forth.

Now the typical "undecided" when you get down to within 3 months of an election is a clueless idiot who is not likely to vote anyway.

Posted by: Vic at September 26, 2010 09:40 AM (/jbAw)

84 "Independent" is typical of the dipshits that look at a generalization that hold true, and yet feel that since they are (or feel they are) the exception, then the entire generalization is invalid. The fact is, independent voters are the last to make up their minds, and they are very often influence by what Ace has previously described at a "preference cascade." Which is just fancy talk for "all the cool kids are doing it."

Posted by: XBradTC at September 26, 2010 09:41 AM (wZ1Ss)

85 You know, you can give it up anytime on the weak-minded independent voter who hasn't picked a team yet thing. Unless you want to drive us off too. A pox on both your pathetic political parties. I wouldn't be a member of either any party if you paid me. Why should I swear fealty to an entity that hasn't earned it and doesn't deserve it? 89 As a former independent I registered republican last year. It became clear to me that leaving the early choices to 'political junkies' was not giving me many choices I liked in Nov. I think the country would be stronger if the D party could be pulled back from the commies but its not happening soon. OTOH the tea party folks have made great strides in pulling the R's towards real fiscal conservative positions and constitutional government IMO. And there were years as an independent when I just voted against the politician with the most obnoxious ads. I have to hand it to P/R/O they have created a huge amount of civic energy in folks like me who used to consider voting in Nov and paying their taxes was good enough.

96 I heard a funny story yesterday from one of my friends.  He went to the quintessential liberal institution.  He majored in poli sci and then went on to law school.  He happens to also be black.  He happens to be a conservative....I mean really conservative.  (he sort of came out of the closet the other night in telling this story)

Apparently he could not wait to get his degree.  he got it, framed it, put it up on the wall and then got a copy of his transcript and framed that.  And then he called the one professor, with whom he had two classes and asked the professor to come to lunch.

At the lunch he told the professor that he had to hide his conservatism in the professor's class and, if he didn't realize that was the impact he was having, he, my friend, wanted to let him know that he felt it was sort of an unhealthy environment if people had to hide their true beliefs and just spit back at him the very liberal, almost communist, almost socialist beliefs of said professor.

My friend thought this would be a positive conversation that he was doing something good, that he was letting the professor know that there was no give and take, no real teaching going on and he actually thought the professor would love the feedback and thank him.

do you know the professor told my friend that an institution can rescind a degree.  Did you ever hear of that?  Anyway, that one comment made my friend disgusted.

He says he stood up, they had not even gotten their lunch yet.  Threw enough cash on the table to pay for lunch and said "i've lost my appetite." and as he was starting to walk out of the restaurant he said "this is very contradictory to my beliefs but just remember you don't have to be a lib to play the race card, professor, have a good day" and out he walked.

Now, he told this story to a bunch of lib/dems and he got a lot of "good for you", "what a nerve" "ooo wows".....

the climate in NYC is changing ......

And there are the uninterested who say on election day "oh is today voting, guess I should go and vote"....I've decided that this year I am going to answer that with "your vote is very important and unless you've done the necessary research and observation to vote responsibly, to develop an informed opinion through critical thinking then I might suggest that you refrain from voting altogether until you take it as the serious right that it is"

The Miami Herald's Beth Reinhard is moving to National Journal

"Beth Reinhard has the skill, the wit, the insight, and above all the passion for the game that makes a great political correspondent," said Ron Brownstein, National Journal Group Editorial Director.  "The only thing she lacks is the national audience she deserves.  We look forward to providing that at National Journal, and we know our audience will benefit tremendously from the fresh voice and fresh perspective she will bring to the national political debate."

From National Journal's release: Reinhard is the latest in a growing list of talented writers, reporters, and analysts joining National Journal Group.  In the last several weeks, National Journal Group has announced several important new additions, including former Fox News correspondent Major Garrett, Newsweek's Michael Hirsh, veteran magazine writer and editor Matt Cooper, political analyst Matthew Dowd, The Atlantic's Marc Ambinder, USA Today's Aamer Madhani....

173  Most people had a nice job and a nice house while GWB was president.  GWB was pushing the education billion dollar business to show it's worth.   No one was trying to build a mosque two blocks from ground zero.  We were moving toward tweeking health care not bombing it out of existence.  Charities were thriving because hey when you are doing well you want to make sure everyone has that chance.

Posted by: curious at September 26, 2010 12:19 PM (p302b)

Curious, slow down turbo. I am to the right of Reagan politically in addition to being a realist.  The first thing we need to understand is the fact GWB, as much as we may want to square his presidency with a conservative narrative, ran unabated in spending.  Medicare Part D alone cost over $1Trillion.

The entire economy over the last 15 years was based on a super cycle of interventionist economics sustained by the Fed's monetary expansion, speculation and ill-packaged and ill rated bonds sold in the form of collateralized debt obligations; which were in turn bet against by the very same firms who marketed and sold them.  The bets were called credit default swaps and were at the core of the liquidity crisis of 2008.  Investment banks selling the bonds could also bet against the bonds without even owning them.  Those owning the default swaps were essentially shorting the entire housing market and spurned on the meltdown through calling the collateral of firms such as AIG.

Before you continue to vent, you need to understand the fact the economic build up over the last 15 years was completely inorganic and false - -  period.

We are going through a global deleveraging and are in the midst of not a recession but a highly unique depression that cannot be explained through conventional economics for we are in a simultaneous deflationary and inflationary environment for which the Fed is purposefully pursuing a policy of currency debasement and have even come out and stated this.

Understand one thing, there is not going to be an economic recovery.  The monetary unit and reserve currency of the dollar is collapsing and this is not conjecture nor whimsical analysis.  The currency is right now collapsing before your very eyes.

The reality is change and the environment is volatility.

That said, Obama remains a socialist and is a failure of a president, because he is not a leader and is adding fuel to the fire, a fire that was started prior to his arrival.

I don't think that you are being fair to "Burn the Witch." His reading comprehension is so woefully inadequate that he simply didn't understand Gabe's point. So calling him clueless isn't strictly accurate. He had the clues available; he just didn't interpret them correctly. So...he is definitely witless, certainly an asshole, and I will reserve judgment on his fecklessness until he spouts off on something else (although all indications are good).

178 Confidential to The GOP: If you think the people reacted with anger to D.C.'s betrayal of their trust, imagine how they'll react if/when their Republican rescuers offer nothing but more betrayal.

BTW, Boner: "It will not be business as usual" sounds one hell of a lot like "I promise I won't come in your mouth."

The part you quote and the "indeptards" comment in his 'translation', along with the usual contemptuous commentary I guess just contributed to my misreading, though I don't think it's much of a stretch to read it that way.  There's usually a decent amount of seething contempt toward Independents on this blog by a number of people.

And while it's usually just in the commentary, it came across that way in Gabe's post - that's what prompted my ill-considered response, not a "chip" on my shoulder.  And looking back upthread, I see that I only paid attention to the first part of Gabe's clarification, and not the second.  And I'll see if I can start another sentence with "and".

I withdraw my comment and apologize for not starting a more interesting flamewar with more competence.

187 The article is encouraging Meek to stay in the race and telling Crist he will lose and only help Rubio win. There is no way Meek will drop out, and no way he will win with Crist in the race. Maybe toward the end, the Democrats will offer Crist an incentive to drop out and endorse Meek. Rubio will still win, because he is just that good a candidate.

Posted by: Tattoo De Plane at September 26, 2010 03:43 PM (mHQ7T)

193 I doubt Obama would waste an appointment on Crist.  Crist has effectively ended his political career with this insane independent run.  The Republicans will never take him back, and the Democrats don't trust traitors enough to go all in backing them (look at what happened to Specter)

Ogabe might promise him something, then double cross him though.  That would be sweet, and there's nothing Charlie could do about it.  The dems can deny any promise as long as it was only made verbally, and Charlie would look like a pathetic whiner if he did make a double cross allegation publicly.
