More Johnson Please
— Dave in Texas

Since I had a mid-air posting collision with Gabriel about Ron Johnson's lead opening up over Russ Feingold, here's a Johnson campaign ad several readers mentioned in the comments.

It's ball-dippingly good.

7 That's why liberals get the vapours whenever somebody suggests that the government should "privatize" Social Security.

There's NOTHING to "privatize"- the money is ALL GONE!

8 I dunno, I thought it was 'meh.'

It's not that Washington treats it like a ponzi scheme, it's that it IS a ponzi scheme.  It relies on new suckers to pay off the old suckers, and that's coming unraveled by the weight of demographics.

Johnson will face the real challenge when someone asks him what his solution is.

Russ Feingold ??

Never heard of him.

Posted by: charlie gibson at September 17, 2010 06:30 AM (AT52Q)

10 With that ad Johnson should be looking down at Feingold and yelling "You can't see me!"

What a kill shot!

11 That was a nice, simple, clear, and devastating political ad.

Beautiful!

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo ( NJConservative) at September 17, 2010 06:32 AM (LH6ir)

12 Even if the politicians hadn't raided the "trust fund" (was there ever a "trust fund", or did it disappear when LBJ started using the SS accounting tricks for the general gov't fund?), SS would still be unsustainable because of the demographics - a longer-lived retired population with not enough younger workers paying into the system.

Ron Johnson knows the problem, but will he have the fortitude to articulate the solution?  Privatization and having people prepare for their own retirement, that is?

I'm afraid the only possible "solution" is to look everybody under 65 in the eye and say: "You fucked up- you trusted us!" and tell them the truth- their money is gone and they won't be getting any of it back.

This is exactly the tact other Republicans need to take when the lying ass dems start crying "evil killers of the helpless and of senior citizens" that they continuously employ.

The dems have been allowed to control the terms of this discourse and other arguments for far too long.

These programs (soc. sec. and medicare) are unaffordable today and will only continue to be a disasterous burden until they are dismantled and reassembled in a workable way.

Over $100 trillion in unfunded obligations according to the President of the Dallas Federal Reserve.

Over $100  trillion.

44 The SS payout age was based on life expectancy in 1940; it needs to be linked to it, and second - a line needs to be drawn, after which a slowly increasing amount of SS taxes go into personal account and a simple array of investment choices can be selected by the payee. Down the road those choices can be expanded to include private management, etc.

Their health care reforms guarantee access to medical care, will slow spending that is bankrupting the nation and should reduce future deficits, to boot.

The financial reforms offer some protection against another economic freefall. These shouldn't be hard sells.

But you do have to sell them when the opposition is blasting these achievements 24/7. Sadly, few Democrats are blowing their horn, especially over health care, and some are actually running against that success. This is self-defeating behavior.

That's right, she's telling them that most Americans support ObamaCare.  That they should really start talking up the great things they have done to the economy.  You go, girl!

Other than the temporary comfort of delusion, what good does pumping out crap like that do? I could have compiled an AoSHQ graph (based up McCain's level of favorables over Obama) showing that McCain was on to a crushing lead over Obama in 2008.

Well... first of all.. our 'representatives' have  spent so much..  the truth is..
If you are under 40 or possibly.. under 50.. there is no social security for you.
Baby boomers will suck dry every tax dollar until they are gone.  Sorry.. but its true.

Stop giving SS to millionaires.   Donald Trump will get a check every month.

70 Well, "raiding" the trust fund isn't really the definition of a ponzi scheme, more like a fly-by-night (or 80 years) scheme.  SS is a ponzi scheme but for demographic reasons.  Keeping every cent for SS would be a great plan except it looks like SS is entering its decades of deficits.

IMO - raising the retirement age is not a solution.  A part of the solution is to stop using SS contributions as general fund money.  Had SS and Medicare not been used as a slush fund for pols, they would probably still be in trouble but less by a huge factor.

I believe that a market based solution, even given the problems in the economy now, is still the answer, at least something self managed.  All of that money would build a pretty solid basis under the economy that would help to keep things like what are going on today from happening.

But the contributions absolutely have to be made off limits to the sticky hands of politicians.

Posted by: THe NKVD at September 17, 2010 07:32 AM (Snu7z)

81 Re SS ponzi scheme and its unsustainability. What a lot of you younger Morons are missing is that there have been three tax increases, one of which added a series of ever increasing tax increases so they wouldn't have to vote on it again. Also, they already increased the retirement ages.

All of that was to put the program on sound actuarial grounds that would give a large surplus to take of the "boomers" when they retired. And it would have except...

What happened was that the pols spent the money after LBJ took it out of the "lockbox". I say now, before they do anything else to SS such as even further tax increases or "eligibility" changes that they go back with a special tax on all the members of congress who voted for a negative budget since the first tax increase, their heirs and assigns, and issue a special tax that takes all their wealth and income except for a poverty level amount and adds it to the SS trust fund period.

After that, then we can look at other needed fixes. Like privatizing it so the communists in Washington can not use it for a slush fund.

Yes, the ones that worries me the most is off transcript from O'Rielly.  I've found the transcript myself at Fox.  The other ones are either not really sourced or not really bad...unless you hate Christians.

91 I've found the transcript myself at Fox.

Why not post "here's what they are saying" and include the link to Fox.

IN fact please do post the link to Fox I want to read all of it.

92 Ok, here's a tiny url...it won't let me post the long one from Fox.

93 Thanks for the link. I read the entire thing. O'Reilly came across like the ass that he normally is. She had two major points:

The people who wanted to Clone the monkeys have openly admitted that this was step in the work to clone humans. Now I don't know whether that is true or not but it would be very easy to find out if people wanted to look into it.

O'Reilly says "That's the slippery slope argument and I don't buy it". First, it is NOT the slippery slope argument if they have openly said they want to do it. And second O'Reilly is full of shit, the slippery slope argument is very applicable because the left has been doing that since the 30s on the way to communism. It is also the major driving force behind the liberal justices and loss of property rights in Kelo from Stare Decisis.

No, I thought she came off very well in a hostile interview with two opponents.

As for the "cloning issue" itself I am still not completely made up of mind on that issue. But I do know this, cloning monkeys for stem cells on Parkinson research is a red herring. In fact embryonic stem cell research is a red herring and a major BS item.

The secret here with her, and other conservatives, is not just how to conduct an interview where all the parties are actively hostile, but when to not conduct the interview at all. I know all politicians like to think any press is good press, but I am thinking that for Republicans who are not RINOs that is not true.

If Mr. Johnson from Wisconsin wants to really get seniors in WI riled up, besides talking about how SS has been robbed, he should talk about how ObamaCare is going to take $600 billion out of Medicare and give it to

1) young people, who are 2) maybe here illegally, and 3) who vote for the democrats.  The death panels will be the bureaucrats at Medicare who won't approve any procedures if you are over 65, and the doctors who won't be able to afford to care for patients over 65 because the docs won't get a dime for treating them.

He should also mention that AARP is a bunch of lying weasels, AARP is making money hand over fist by selling insurance products to seniors at the same time AARP is conspiring with Obama to defund Medicare.
