— Gabriel Malor Drew writes to say he's lost track, and I have too. I'm in the middle of a whip count update, but for now chew on this:
.S. Rep. Jerry Costello says he opposes the health care overhaul bill in its current form and is unsure if the proposal will pass the House if a vote comes this week. The Democrat from Belleville tells The (Alton) Telegraph that he's concerned the Senate bill would allow public funding for abortions and cost hasn't been fully determined.
Costello was also one of the Stupak Dozen that Democrats spent the weekend saying doesn't exist. Oops.
What It Means [ace]: We were already sort of counting on Stupak's Dozen to flip. If they don't flip, we can imagine that Nancy Pelosi could get a the few votes from hardcore progressives needed to pass this.
But the Democrats have been proclaiming -- hoping, really -- that even though they're giving the Stupak Dozen the finger, they'd come home in the end and vote for the bill anyway. Most of them, anyway. This undermines that. Each of these on-the-fence guys keeps seeming to declare "No."
Stupak says his guys will vote no, Pelosi and Waxman say that ultimately they'll vote yes. Stupak seems better at prognosticating.

Good for Jerry Costello! He is my guy!
I've been asking him to help bail me out of jail when I "act out" upon the passage of Obamacare.
Now we can both avoid that unpleasantness.

I'm thinking that Costello, et. al, would have a better chance dealing with the Giant African Snails of Florida (Top Headlines) than Toonces/ Pelosi/ Reid.
At least with the snails you only risk getting meningitis and they eat stucco - not your soul.

"One of the forgotten arguments from 2008 was Obama and McCain's argument over health-care reform. McCain's lost the argument because Obama pilloried McCain's tax-credit plan as a "tax" on health insurance for the first time. But McCain's plan would have empowered millions of families to own their own health insurance and helped hold down costs by encouraging people to shop for affordable health-insurance options in a widely competitive interstate market. McCain would've ended the illusion that employer-provided insurance is just a free lunch.
Obama campaigned, essentially, by arguing that he would just extend the status quo to the uninsured. He essentially ruled out the single best idea for improving health care — ending the employer tax exclusion for health insurance — because unions hate the idea. Later, he gutted the second best idea — taxing high-cost "Cadillac plans" in the Senate bill — after the unions protested yet again.
Now, Democrat's reforms would offer expensive insurance coverage to millions more Americans — but health care would remain expensive, hyper-regulated, and bureaucratic. Government will add a new middle-class health-care entitlement on top of the others (Medicare and Medicaid) we can't afford now. Call it what you will, but it ain't reform."

Pelosi said she was "very exhilarated" that the non-Reform would pass this week.
Has she been huffing again?

They'll take out abortion language in the reconciliation bill. I'm sure of it.
These blue dogs claiming that abortion is their primary objection will be up the proverbial creek.

I'll take 8-2 odds that you're right. However, abortion is their sacrament. The far left may abandon it if it doesn't have free baby murder in it.

If they don't have the votes for passing the senate bill, they don't have the votes for Slaughter.
No one is going to be fooled. Once the cat was out of the bag with teh "Slaughter solution" it was dead letter. Not a chance that any threatened Dem is going to vote for some dubious and likely unconstitutional bill "deeming" passage of a bill but only with re-writes (in other words, an amended bill), but not vote for the Senate crapload itself.
What would be smart from the GOP is to introduce a revised version of what passed in the House originally with teh Stupak language, the public option, and some of the Senate provisions, and then demand a vote on that to send it to teh Senate. Put the turd back in the Senate's pocket, and make the various House coalitions even more entrenched.

Its a good plan, but why take the risk on Senate passage? (Which I suppose is zero because of Republican filibuster).
The Dems f#$ked this one up; let them own the consequences.

The theory is that the commies who won't vote yes because it isn't liberal enough, would vote for the Slaughter option. I'm thinking they'll lose as much as they gain with that maneuver. As you said, the cat is out of the bag now and there will be no "I never voted for it, I just voted for a rule".
As to which Dems are in trouble, just remember that Massachusetts is as safe a district as there is and I'm sure a lot of the members of the House are machine politicians with weaker political skills -- and far less money and fewer resources -- than Coakley.

I think if I were running the House GOP caucus, I'd stage a daylong GOP walkout in protest of this unconstitutional bullshit. It wouldn't do any good, but street-theater is about all the GOP can bring to bear until election time rolls around (by which time, of course, it will be too late).
And don't invest your hopes in repealing this greasy turd if it passes, fellow Morons. There's no earthly way that the GOP would get enough seats in both houses to override a Bammer veto, which would put any repeal movement way out to 2012 -- at which point other issues and crises would have long since assumed center stage and turned ObamaCare into a fait accompli. It's what the Donks are counting on, and why they are so bound and determined to get this done no matter the electoral massacre come fall. Politicians come and politicians go, but Federal bureaucracies are forever once they're established.
