— DrewM Alaska Night Part Deux.
Just getting started (9:40 eastern). Miller is supposed to have a competing presser shortly.
Palin took a veiled shot at Murkowski during her speech and then directly by name after it.
One challenge with any write-in campaign is what versions of a candidates name will be counted for them. At one point the Alaska Commissioner of Elections said "Lisa M." would suffice. Not so fast.
“After careful review of the statutes it is clear that the oval must be marked and either a candidate’s last name or their name as written on their declaration of candidacy must be present in order for the vote to be counted,” (Lieutenant Governor Craig) Campbell said. It is questionable whether simply listing the first name and initial of the last name of a write-in candidate meets the requirements of state statute, unless that is the declared name by the candidate on the written declaration of candidacy.“If there is a write-in candidate and they have filed the proper paperwork, DOE will follow the letter of the law - nothing more, nothing less. If there are questions of interpretation of the statutes, the Department of Law will be consulted,” Campbell stated.
In the meantime, Campbell has discussed the issue with the Department of Law and has been informed that the Attorney General is reviewing the issue.
That makes this already unlikely effort, even more so. FTR-Only one person, Strom Thurmond in 1954, has won election to the Senate as a write-in candidate.
This isn't about winning an election, it's about Lisa "Daddy Said I Could Be Senator!" Murkowski's ego and her dislike of Sarah Palin.
We really need to hear from John Cornyn and Mitch McConnell in the next few minutes announcing Murkowski is out of the leadership, off the Senate Appropriations Committee (the key to bringing money home to Alaska, her only rationale for running) and in general dead to them and the Republican Party.
Don't know about you but I'm super excited to see how Murkowski behaves in the coming lame duck session.
Mad at Murky? Here's Joe Miller's website.
Murkowski started this dog and pony show off by talking about a facebook page urging her to do this. Here's one to let her know she's a sore loser who has to go.
Murkowski says she made a mistake by not attacking Miller's 'extremist views' and now 'the gloves are off'.

Of course, I'm speculating, but it seems as though Senate Republicans really play by the rules (their own rules) and do things very formally. It'll be interesting to see if there are proxies sent out from the House and retired GOP Senators to say the things McConnell et al can't say yet.

Oh, I totally agree. And yet part of understanding humanity -- actually *understanding* why other people do the dumb shit they do, not just analyzing it after the fact -- is about understanding how powerful hurt feelings and feelings of sudden, unexpected rejection can be. That's where this comes from. The "WTF just happened to me?" thing. Especially for Murkowski, who's always had a (justified) haunting sense that AK voters held her in contempt despite her best efforts to earn their respect.
As I said above (and a hundred times before - I was post #1 on Ace's "let's primary Lisa Murkowski!" thread, if you recall) in practical political terms: screw Lisa Murkowski. But on a human level, I think I understand what's motivating her. It sure doesn't *justify* jack squat...but I'm saying I can understand.

In fact, it probably does not even matter if she stays in to the end or peels a single vote in favor of herself.
Murkowski says she made a mistake by not attacking Miller's 'extremist views' and now 'the gloves are off'.
It seems this is the plan. She's going to play VP 'attack dog' for whoever the dem is. Slam Miller, slam Miller, slam Miller, go dirty, drag him down with you, and then quit.
Raise the kind of irresponsible allegations and dirty smears that the dem candidate (who's actually in this race) would damage himself with.

I really think this woman has not thought this thru, if I remember correctly, there is a dem senator up in 2014, and she would have pretty easily won that seat.
The backlash against her now, in this cycle, will be huge. She really does not get that maybe her worshippers have encouraged her to do a write in, however, the average voter will see a sorry a$$ politician clinging to power, and that will disgust them even more.

DrewM: FTR-Only one person, Strom Thurmond in 1954, has won election to the Senate as a write-in candidate.
OK, that's interesting, but not very informative. We need to know how many serious, credible attempts to get a senate seat by write-in to make a better estimate of her chances.
If Strom was the only guy to ever attempt this, that is a lot different from if Strom and twenty other candidates made this sort of attempt, and only Strom Thurmond succeeded.

One challenge with any write-in campaign is what versions of a candidates name will be counted for them. At one point the Alaska Commissioner of Elections said "Lisa M." would suffice.
So. If'n I were to write in, ohhh, I don't know, say 'Lisa Lisa and the Toe Jam', that would be cool? Cause, you see, I can get down with reliving the '80's, and this would be the best perfect way to make Alaska hip again.

Brutus: Thanks, Bob.
Judas: It's good to be here.
Benedict: Hello.
Bob: So, initial thoughts?
Judas: Well, it's pretty crass.
Benedict: Agreed.
Brutus: Oh, absolutely. I don't want to stray from the topic...
Bob: I think I know where you're going.
Brutus: Yes...
Judas: No, it's okay, we can be honest.
Benedict: Yeah, we're not here to compare to each other. I mean, Ceasar was a great and brilliant general, but a tyrant.
Brutus: Okay, I just wanted...
Judas: No, we're cool.
Bob: Back to Alaska and...
Benedict: Murkowski.
Judas: (says something under breath)
Bob: What was that?
Judas: Nothing!
Brutus: (laughs)
Benedict: It's not just crass, though.
Bob: What is it?
Benedict: It's a shot in both feet.
Judas: Oh, absolutely.
Brutus: I think we all agree on that. Epic miscalculation.
Bob: Of what, specifically?
Brutus: What *isn't* it? I mean, public mood, party response, career prospects...
Benedict: The TEA Party's leverage...
Judas: In *Alaska* of all places.
Brutus: I mean, Sarah Palin may never have said she could see Russia from her house, but it seems like she could say she can't see Murkowski's future from there either.
Benedict: (laughs)
Bob: I am a little surprised at the relative joviality over this.
Brutus: Well...
Judas: Well, it makes *us* look better, certainly.
Benedict: (laughs)

Talk about a bitter clinger trying to hang onto power by any means possible.
Does anyone else feel that this practice of running after being beat dishonors and undermines the political process? I hope that states will move to foreclose the possibility of primary-losing candidates running in some other fashion in the general election.
The Republican party should require every Republican candidate who receives funding to sign a contract that binds them to return the money if they are no longer the candidate of the Republican party. They should then sue the candidates that try to pull a Crist or a Murkowski and hound them throughout their campaign. This might make it a little less palatable to run and lose and then run again.

Fuck her. I do not like to speak badly of Republicans, but this shit has to stop and people Murkowski, Crist, and the rest of the selfish fucking scum need to be bitchslapped so hard that others will think twice before playing this childish game.

And yet part of understanding humanity -- actually *understanding* why other people do the dumb shit they do, not just analyzing it after the fact

FIFY.
Look, you can feel sorry and 'understand' Adolf Hitler if you twist your cerebellum into a pretzle sticks.
It's just as plausible she's an egomaniacal bitch with overwhelming sense of entitlement and superiority, and a vendetta against Palin which she's taking out on her proxy out of sheer spite.

Joe Miller tells National Review Online that Sen. Lisa Murkowski, a member of the “ruling class,” is “refusing to relinquish power.”
Miller, Alaska’s GOP Senate nominee, defeated Murkowski in an August primary. In a press conference tonight in Anchorage, Murkowski announced her plans to continue in the race as a write-in candidate. Miller says that he has “been told directly” by senior GOP senators that Murkowski will now “lose her seniority and her committee positions.”
Miller says Murkowski’s move “should shock anyone with integrity,” calling it another example of how her “lifeblood is power.” She has, he says, a “disconnection from reality.”

Sen. Mitch McConnell, Senate GOP leader, weighs in:
“Senate Republicans informed Lisa Murkowski that we will respect the will of the voters in Alaska and support the Republican nominee, Joe Miller. I informed her that by choosing to run a campaign against the Republican nominee, she no longer has my support for serving in any leadership roles, and I have accepted her letter of resignation from Senate leadership. Lisa has served her state and our party with distinction, but Republicans acknowledge the decision Alaskans made and join them in support of the Republican nominee, Joe Miller—the next Senator for Alaska.”

The trick is to get Snowe to track right - and *stay* there. Oh, not all the way, be realistic. But key issues.
I think it's possible, she wants to keep her job, she's pretty secure electorally, it would be hard to run someone too much further right against her because her base is pretty far left... BUT I think she can be begged/borrowed/stolen on key votes and major fiscal issues, unlike Specter.
The really good news about today is that it looks like the Murky smackdown may actually be the scare they need - O'Donnell v. Castle got too caught up in party politics and people are making excuses about what that means. But Murky, Murky looks like she's going to be a pretty clear "message."
So this might turn out okay, keep the remaining incumbent RINOs a little scared, bring some new blood in. Heck, if the GOP can actually cut ANYTHING in the next year and a half, we could even pick up more seats in 2012 rather than another pendulum swing (a weak one if any).

Have we learned nothing from the Delaware fiasco? If we don't have the support of the brave, loyal moderates, we will lose elections and not regain control of the senate.
Now I am all in favor of letting the tea party express their views. But we must not let passions blind us.
This is why I am supporting Lisa Murkelsky for senate via write in ballots.
Now, many of you may be thinking that Lizza Merkowski is a RINO. Now I'll admit she is a little free thinking at times. But no one in Alaska doubts her integrity! She has always put Alaska's interests first in her votes.
Also, we very much need to elect 10 conservative senators to regain control of the House. We already lost Mike Castle. If we lose Lisa Morcowski, I don't see how we will ever regain control.

Perhaps because it's leaderless...it can't be decapitated. I read something earlier today about this. Because there is no top-down structure, you can't negotiate with the Tea Party. I think the left would love to make Sarah the de facto leader but hopefully she'll slip out of that trap.

One of the things I loved about Reagan was his ability to use humor effectively. Our country has been pretty stressed out for awhile, and any leaders that can lighten the mood like Sarah did will be appreciated.

Unfortunately I don't think it's till '14.
Graham holds on in SC because:
1.) Behind the polite exterior he's a fucking blade man, a knife-fighter who will slice you open with a smile and leave you holding your guts in your hand before you even realize what happened;
2.) Remember this year's SC primary season? Yeah, that's generally what you're working with in SC politics. Nikki Haleys come along once every now and then. Will Folkses are thick on the ground every single year, forever. Compared to what could be, most SC politicos think they've gotten off pretty okay with Graham. (N.B. Jim DeMint is hugely unpopular with the SC GOP and not even particularly beloved by a number of the rank-and-file voters of that particular state...which says nothing whatsoever normatively but is still an interesting comment on the difference btw. in-state and out-of-state attitudes towards these politicians we think we know so well.)
This was all the old calculus, though. This was the calculus during an era where it was just *assumed* that primaries could be controlled safely by the state party, free of national interference or attention. I actually agree with you, Entropy, that I have trouble seeing how Graham survives a primary challenge in 2014 unless the climate of the nation has notched down by several clicks. But even if it does, I still think he's got a big ol' bullseye, Bob Smith-style, on his back.

I'd forgotten that one, thanks for the reminder. (And was it McCain that said "bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran"?)
Honey, I forgot to duck.

I was way too young to remember when this actually happened (what was it, 1984?) but I wish to God I'd been old enough to know at the time. I would have been having a riotous good time with the splenetic overreaction of my liberal buddies. One of my all-time favorite Presidential goofs.
Reagan was one witty dude.

1.) Behind the polite exterior he's a fucking blade man, a knife-fighter who will slice you open with a smile and leave you holding your guts in your hand before you even realize what happened;
Yes, but Nikki Nimrata has used her forbidden Kama Sutra technique to seduce all seduce all his gay friends so he has no support.
Really though, Lindsay's base of power is a bunch of wierd foppish southern guys with girls names... the ones that got their asses kicked by the new Governess.
Here's to hoping she uses her katar to disembowel them all.
2.) Remember this year's SC primary season?
I remember last years. Graham escaped without a challenge with some shenanigans and it didn't hurt that McCain was running for POTUS.
'14 will be a midterm.
And SC hates him. Like all their state legislature has officially told him to fuck himself in writing. He's been officially censured.

I don't know what the hell is going in South Carolina but it's like it's home to some secret evil league of anachronistic homosexual aristoi.
That really blows my mind.
Why do all these old white dudes have pink ties and girls names?

President's Address on Alaska and Murkowski
Let me be perfectly clear. We as a country cannot allow factions to separate us and define who we are, who we can be and who we should be. America's destiny has always been North. Alaska is held as a destination of dreams and embodies the diversity of America's great land.
Before tonight's national address, I signed Executive Order Freedom's Volley ensuring Alaska's future and diverse landscape is maintained by it's daughter of Alaska, Lisa Murkowski and in keeping with the tradition she has brought to the table of diversity, I have, through presidential order, designated Senator Murkowski as the Republican Candidate for Senate.
Let me be perfectly clear, this was done out of the deepest consideration of Alaska and should in no way be construed as a politically motivated act; nor should it be demeaned in any way. For this is a teachable moment for America.
President, Barack H. Obama

Reagan was one witty dude.
Yes, he was, and I hope you will experience a president as beloved as he was during your lifetime.
'Night everyone.

Here's how it happened. In those days in SC, there was no GOP worth mentioning, and for virtually all offices winning the Democratic primary was in effect winning the general unopposed. The incumbent, Burton Maybank, was also a former Governor and not only popular in the state, but revered. He won the Democratic primary for another term, unopposed, but then died suddenly.
After his funeral, party leaders met and decided to substitute Brown as the candidate, since there was no provision in state law for a second primary. The newspapers highlighted that they had literally left Maybank's funeral and met to nominate Brown, so the man wasn't even in the ground. This outraged the public. Brown wasn't the one who was behind it, but it was his candidacy upon which the wrath was directed.
Thurmond then offered as a write-in candidate, and vowed to resign the seat before the next election cycle and compete in a primary without any benefit of incumbency (which he did).
Were it not for the public anger over the disrespect shown to a much loved citizen, even Strom couldn't have won as a write-in.
So Mercowsky has no chance to win, but I suspect it's worse than that for her. Maybe her top supporters and those on her campaign payroll (who would love to draw a paycheck the next eight weeks) urged her to run, but many more will see her as a sore loser.
Put the over/under on her final total at 5%, and that may be too generous.
