Right.  Saracens - as they were known - transmitted some things from Greek, Byzantine Roman, and Asian culture to the medieval Europeans.  There was also a great deal of interaction from the Crusades.    

Averroes gave Aristotle and Plato to late medieval scholastics like Aquinas whose ancestors had burned them.  But it's not like the Muslims wrote it.  And Averroes other contributions have been blown up far beyond reality. 

The problem with all "best medieval scientists or doctors..." arguments is the medieval period lacked in science and medicine compared to either what came before or after.  Not counting castles and catapults of course.  They stacked up pretty well.  So Muslims would slap on a mud poultice instead of amputating the arm.  It's not exactly an MRI and vascular surgery.

I'm incredulous that soon we won't even be able to launch a man into orbit anymore.  As a kid, I wrote to NASA all the time asking for info about various projects.  It was free for the asking.  I stayed up and watched the moon landing.

Thanks B-HO for gutting one of the things that truly inspired me as a kid.  I'm afraid the rest of the country isn't far behind.
