Netanyahu Withdraws From Obama's Nuke Terrorism Summit Fearing Ambush
— DrewM

And odds are Obama would join the ambush rather than prevent it.

Netanyahu, who plans to send a deputy and two senior advisers to the April 12-13 conference instead, canceled "after learning that some countries including Egypt and Turkey plan to say Israel must sign the NPT," an Israeli official said.

By staying outside the 1970 Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), Israel has not had to forswear nuclear arms nor admit international inspectors to its Dimona reactor, which experts believe has produced plutonium for between 80 and 200 warheads.

Netanyahu's attendance at the 47-country summit would have been unprecedented. Israeli premiers long shunned such forums, hoping to dampen foreign scrutiny on their nuclear secrets.

Aides said Netanyahu originally agreed to go after being reassured by the United States that the summit communique would focus on efforts to secure fissile materials and shun language challenging Israel's nuclear "ambiguity" policy.

Such coordination between the allies has been clouded, however, by rifts over stalled Israeli-Palestinian peace talks.

This ties in nicely with Liz Cheney's speech last night at the Republican Southern Leadership Conference. Her crazy theory? Maybe the US should be friendly towards our allies.

Israel is our strongest ally in the Middle East and one of our strongest and most important allies in the world. Barack Obama is playing a reckless game that could have deadly consequences if he continues on the path of diminishing America’s ties to Israel. Israel is not the only ally to have felt Obama’s wrath — last year the Obama Administration pulled the rug out from under leaders in Poland and the Czech Republic by abruptly canceling a missile defense system they had committed to host. We did so because the Russians complained.

Afghan President Karzai, whose support we need if we are going to succeed in Afghanistan, is being treated to an especially dangerous and juvenile display from this White House. They dress him down publicly almost daily and refuse to even say that he is an ally. There is a saying in the Arab world: “It is more dangerous to be America’s friend than to be her enemy.” In the age of Obama, that is proving true.

On the day that Iran announces once again that it is moving ahead with its nuclear program, Obama's vaunted conference on nuclear terrorism is about to be hijacked by Muslim nations to attack Israel. Wonderful.

As Teh Fred said in The Hunt for Red October, "This business will get out of control. It will get out of control and we'll be lucky to live through it. "

7 According to this "senior foreign policy fellow" the only reason the Republicans like Israel is because Israel kills Muslims.

"he modern Republican Party that has to cater to these racists and that gets me to my fundamental point, it is not that they are pro-Israel. They are anti-Muslim. They do not like Muslims. They are on the side of Israel because Israel is — they don’t like Jews that much to start out with, either — but compared to Muslims, they like Jews fine.

TheyÂ’re infatuated with the Israeli army. Why? Because the Israeli army kills Muslims. I mean, this is what itÂ’s all about[.]"

By that standard we should have loved Saddam and Syria and the USSR and  . . . .

This "summit" will be just a repeat of all of the crap you see at the UN, a bunch of asshat dictators and despots decrying the good guys and taking them to task for having the temerity to want to defend themselves.

I only hope that Israel can hang on till 2012 when we can do a little regime change of our own.  Until then I fear they are in tremendous peril, no Monty Python reference intended.

Just to re-post something I wrote from down below...

If I were Israel I'd be feeling very nervous about now. One thing they always had going was that if things got really bad was that the U.S. was their friend and ally.

Not now.

Basically, they are in a worse situation than England was in 1940 after the fall of France.

Posted by: HH at April 09, 2010 09:03 AM (GkYyh)

28 What worries me the most is that we've pretty much put Israel's back to the wall and it's only going to get worse from here.  They have to know by now that Obama will do absolutely nothing to keep Iran from developing a working nuclear weapon.

All of their talk of sanctions and arms treaties and all that other nonsense is total bullshit, Iran will get the bomb if someone doesn't stop them.  Now, put yourself in Israel's position.

You have no reason to doubt that the asshat mulahs who've been threating you with annihilation for years and years won't act on this the absolute moment they obtain a weapon capable of making that threat a reality.

And you can forget all that fancy missile defense technology that your fair weather friend America supposedly is deploying to the gulf.  First you'd have to count on the fact that it would actually work and stop an incoming attack.  Second you'd have to rely on your supposed allies to have the spine to actually use it, which is questionable at best. And odds are good it will be a moot point entirely, because the most likely scenario for a nuclear attack on Israel won't involve an Iranian missile at all.

It will involve an Iranian warhead, or perhaps more than one, turned over to Hezbollah.   The nutjob terrorist sent off the nuke, and even if you could prove it came from Iran (something everyone in the world would know for a fact) odds are good nothing would get done about it at all.

Israel is such a small country you really wouldn't need a whole lot of warheads to wipe them off the map.  So really Israel is running out of time, and out of options here, and if something doesn't happen soon they'll be left with two inevitable but wholly undesirable choices:

1) A military strike or more likely full scale military invasion of Iran.  It's doubtful a strike would do enough damage at this point, odds are good they'd need to launch a full scale invasion to make sure they were safe further down the road.

2) A pre-emptive nuclear strike against Iranian facilities.

30 I've always though there was something kind of redundant about calling Israel our greatest ally.  No shit they are.  We have pretty much propped the country up since inception. With money, defense technology, etc. Not that I disagree with it, but they dont have much choice but to be our ally.

35 @#25 bergerbilder:

Implosion fission is the tough part; lots of hydrodynamic maths.  The Teller/Ulam design (or Sakharov's Third Idea if you play for that team) has been openly discussed to the point where anyone with sufficient Pu-238 (for the fusion sparkplug) could build something that had some level of fusion burn.  The tough part of fusion weapons is sizing and packaging into something deliverable.  I can't imagine that the Israelis haven't figured this out by now; after all national survival tends to focus the scientific minds.

Most of Israel's warheads are believed to be the Teller-Ulam design, it's a pretty standard design used by most countries.  While it technically uses both fusion and fission it's the fissionable material that creates the biggest portion of the bang.

But your right, for the most part a nuke is a nuke.. the bang is so damn big whether it was fusion or fission really doesn't make a hill of beans difference for the most part.

No, I don't think the military would probably do something like this, my guess would be they would most likely follow orders and fire.  However, while they can order you to fire at an aircraft they generally forget to order you to do your best to hit it, which are two entirely different things.

Besides I just don't see Barry and company having the stones to order the troops to open fire in the first place.  The backlash in the Jewish community alone would be unimaginable.  No, while they seem for whatever reason perfectly fine with supporting these worthless asshat liberals despite their rather thinly veiled anti-Semitic sentiments, I doubt that an action that open or brazen against Israel would be tolerated at all by what has been a pretty solid voting block for them to this point.

I'm not so sure that Obama and the Clinton-administered State Department have taken an anti-Israel stance.

I have always liked Benjamin Netanyahu if for no other reason than because his personality makes him, for lack of a better word, an interesting man.

But he is a lousy poker player; e.g., he should not have come to Washington. He should have gotten Obama's and Clinton's people to come to him.

That being said, he should have left his pomposity and his arrogance and his whiny claims of mistreatment at home, for he continues to give rise to a perception that he suffers from a delusion that the tail is wagging the dog.

BTW, Israel is not one of our strongest and best allies. I suspect that they have been giving migraine headaches to our State Department and to our military for the past 50 years, and before then, for the immediately prior 12 years, the British weren't fond of them either.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but considering the available delivery vehicles (aircraft & missiles), the weight/size vs yield question really makes fusion a necessary condition for militarily practical nukes.

Once you go to clandestine shipping container delivery though, that changes things.

I haven't run the calculations myself, but odds are good that the devastation would be enough to pretty much wipe out the whole country.    Only thing that concerns me is the mass, it might be just enough to kick up a large enough dust cloud to wipe out all life on earth.

If nothing else with the smell that would be generated the Persian Gulf would likely be uninhabitable for centuries to come.

Well technically all thermonuclear weapons are H-Bombs, most rely on a combination of a fission and a fusion reaction to produce a high yield explosion.  The older "A-Bomb" fission only designs really aren't used anymore, the yield by comparison is much smaller vrs the size of the warhead itself.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but considering the available delivery vehicles (aircraft & missiles), the weight/size vs yield question really makes fusion a necessary condition for militarily practical nukes.

Once you go to clandestine shipping container delivery though, that changes things.

The hydrogen injection system in a fusion warhead takes up quite a bit of room and is a big difficulty in creating practical sized delivery vehicles for fusion weapons designed for missile delivery; but it has been done and provides substantial increases to yield. But keep in mind that fusion warheads contain a fission trigger to build the necessary conditions to start the reaction. In many small warheads, the yield from this portion of the weapon is the larger yield. Portable devices I would imagine cannot simply have the room for such a system, so they would be fission only. Keep in mind, based on the mass of fuel used, energy released from fusion is 4X+ greater than that of common fission fuels.

64 Israeli jets don't have the legs to make it to Iran with a heavy payload and back home again and with the situation in Iraq what it is I doubt they would overfly Iraqi airspace.A more likely scenario would be the Saudis or Turks would quietly allow the use of their airspace but in flight refueling would still be a problem without U.S. assistance.

Team Troll is absolutely right.

The source of the headache isn't the Palestineans, Iranians, or Syrians who all keep trying to drive the Israelis into the ocean and take the land.  No.  Not at all.  It's those fuckers who keep calling us up, and bitching about how they're trying to be exterminated again!

The headache isn't coming from Hezbollah RPGs crashing into densely-populated settlements.  It's those damn settlements getting in the way of the blast!

The headache CERTAINLY isn't the captured media footage of dead / dying Israeli civilians lying in the rubble.  Nope!  The headache is ABSOLUTELY the manufactured media footage of dead Syrian militia dressed up like civilians to throw off Israeli snipers.

What is really sad is that Obama is going to force Israel to ally with Russia soon...

Russia is having its own terrorist problems, and are about to lose patience with the Wests namby pamby tactics... and if Israel gets thrown under the bus by Obama, they will seek out the next most powerful ally just out of pure survival.

Problem is that Israel is one of the best weapons designers out there.  There technology sometimes even exceeds our own, and if they start supplying Russia with design help... look out.

Why is everyone wondering about our Israel policy.

Obama's father being a communist muslim certainly was an anti-Semite. As a youth, Obama when to a Muslim school in an Muslim country which was certainly anti-Semite. Then when Obama was old enough to go his own way he chose to go to a church with an anti-Semite preacher.

I suspect the title "Dreams Of My Father" actually refers to a world without Jews.

Posted by: Dionne&Brainless at April 09, 2010 10:42 AM (J0rOD)

88 Israel's very smart to get out of this conference. Obama's game-plan has been blatantly clear for some time.

Get nukes on the public agenda as a major item (sorta like health care) ->

Forge agreement with Russia, continue to gin up the topic as a major, major, major national security issue ->... See More

Gather Israelis and the usual gaggle of Israel-haters into a big room and pound, pound, pound on Israel about how change has come, it's time to make the tough decisions, needs to be a nuke-free middle East, etc. ->

Regardless of outcome vis-a-vis Israel, go to Arab states with new bragging rights about having stuck it to Israel. Beg for reciprocity in the form of support of weak Iran sanctions; beg Palestinians to be happy with a finally-Israel-hating America and make some kind of media-ready deal with the Jews even if the whole thing is a sham ->

Arabs laugh in Obama's face and repeat the exact same demands from 1948, 1967, 1973, 1981 etc.

Announce major diplomatic breakthrough.

What many posters don't realize is the SIZE of the area we are talking about.

Once you take out the Negev Desert.. you can drive the length of Israel in about 2 hours.  You can drive the WIDTH of Israel, in places, in HALF an hour, to an Hour.

If you give the Palestinians all that they want, it CUTS the country into pieces, with no territorial integrity.  It also places the ENTIRE country inside the range of Medium Range Surface to Surface Missles, from areas held by a group that is SWORN in their founding documents, to destroy them.

I've been to the Mideast a few times... and to Israel once... I'll take Israel over the rest of the Mideast anytime.

You know, I'm going to reply straight up:

Yes, under the British plan the Jewish refugees would have assimilated, or at least cohabited peacefully, and it could have worked too -- there was a long history of Jews living in the area already, and their relations with the Palestinian Arabs was not always so hostile.  The Grand Mufti kind of threw a wrench in the works though.

As for Israel being a pain in the ass -- well of course it has, and we've been a pain in their ass too.  Allied countries are merely that; they are not your siblings or your lovers.  Countries work to their own best interest, or should; to expect differently is to be foolish.  To expect Israel to always be aggreable to us is as ridiculous as to expect us to always be agreeable to Israel.  HOWEVER, it is in both countries best interests to work together as allies, and it is in the best interests of many of the surrounding Arab states to have it remain so as well -- the American-Israel allegiance provides a certain stablity to the region that would not be there if it was gone.  This dimwit is endangering not just Israel, and not just the U.S. with these shenanigans.

Looks good on paper, Jane, but it isn't the reality. Cite one service that they render that the USA couldn't do without? They need the USA. The USA doesn't need them. Even if you're naive enough to call them allies, they've repeatedly dropped the ball, and they're not even pulling their own weight in that region. Until they clean up their act, they will continue to be a liability, not an asset. They don't get along with anybody. They're obnoxious and abrasive with everybody, even people who try to help them.

We'd have a much easier time believing your vague talk of Israel "pulling its weight", if you hadn't shown your hand earlier when you critiqued Israel's founding.

And now you pull out the pushy obnoxious JewIsraeli canard, like that helps your case.

Ever look around the countries surrounding Israel? See a lot of democracies? Countries ranked high in economic freedom and prosperity? What's the religion of those countries - Buddhism perhaps? Something with a reputation for tolerance (and I'm not talking some bullshit "dhimma" pact with second- or third-class status)?

Israel did get along with Iran and then Turkey before they, too, decided they were Muslim. Coincidentally that also coincided with their turning away from Israel, which must be coincidence.

But by all means, keep fucking that chicken. Maybe you can get it to squawk the Horst Wessel Lied.
