New comment spam policy

When I do periodic comment spam edit/cleanups, I'm going to be posting the spammer's IP.

Sunlight is the best disinfectant. Those with the skilz and desire, feel free to have some fun with those IP's.

Unless its somehow rolled into the Movable Type terms of use or there is a privacy policy that I don't know about, I'm not sure how posting IPs would be doing anything wrong. Except perhaps violating the trust of other commenters, something that wouldn't be an issue with spammers.

And yeah, if your box has been converted into a spam factory, you should probably tighten up the graphics.

Most spam comes from foreign servers. There's about 30% coming out of a large provider down in Boca who apparently is in cahoots with one of the world class spammers.

The best I've ever been able to isolate an IP address down to without provider account record access is to the town/city level.

Winning on a 12(b)(6) motion right off the bat is a whole lot cheaper than lengthy litigation. The question is whether posting the IP address with the recommendation as written cracks the doorÂ—even slightlyÂ—to litigation. Best to leave that door entirely shut when you can. Like I've said, I'm not sure if this opens the door. I could well be entirely off base. But the initial "smell test" tells me that you should look into this more closely before proceeding. You've got a lawyer on the blog here. Talk to him.

When I see a list of recent comments over on the right side of the main page, and I click on a comment I want to read, why does the link simply take me to the article? I then have to click "Access Comments," try to remember the commentor's name and/or a phrase they used, and search on that.

It would seem simpler to me that if I click on a commentor's name in the sidebar, I should be taken to that comment. Of course, I don't know web programming so perhaps that's not possible with our current system.

There is ample legal precedent that spamming is a form of theft of services against the person running internet connected machines. The spammer is using bandwidth, and disk space.

There is also Federal laws against spamming that was enacted back in 2004.

There are a few steps you can take to protect yourself when you decide to screw with spammers or whoever. Just be sure you know about that kind of crap.

104 BTW, Movable Type already displays IP's and has done so for quite a while, it just does it in a form that's not the traditional canonical dotted format.. An IP address ALREADY IS what the (xxxxx) after the comment date is.

So your IP is ALREADY being displayed every time you post a comment.

Since we've been using this for some years now with no legal blowback, posting the same IP in dotted form is in essence posting what already is being posted.

How do you suppose people figure out what when some particularly obnoxious troll is being sock puppeted? They do it by looking at the IP of the sockpuppeter and noticing that its different than the troll's IP.

Not really. They'll just shunt through some non-transparent anon proxy in Djbouti/Thailand/etc and the post will look like it came from Djbouti/Thailand/etc.

A direct send from the PRC could be caught, but these people are smarter than that. That would only catch the amateurs who'd smarten up quick anyway.

If the Movable Type IP banning software allowed for wildcards or ranges (which seems not to be the case), it would be sweet. Then we could whack the whole IP range assigned to abusuve providers hosting particularly persistent spammers. Assigned provider IP ranges are readily available.

I'd hesitate to ban whole IP ranges with a US based provider right out of the gate, I'd probably contact them first and tell'em they have a problem customer and see what happened first.

How into the guts of Pixy's server can you get? Might I suggest a firewall suggestion of tweaking iptables? Review these two lines and see if it will help:

iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 80 --syn -m limit --limit 1/m --limit-burst 5 -j ACCEPT
iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 80 --syn -j DROP

The first line says, "Allow up to 5 HTTP requests (essentially a GET or POST here) per minute."

The second line kicks in after that limit is passed and blocks further requests from any IP breaking rule one.

Modify as necessary the "--limit-burst" integer depending on the rate of the spam. These two rules added on to the INPUT chain will discourage automated spamming which is really the most annoying kind. This is an especially brutal and effective method to inhibit spamming... short of visiting their homes and clubbing both their client and their head.

If there's no TOS (and there isn't here) then the owners of the site can be arbitrary dictators if they want to be (as long as it doesn't violate the TOS between them and their web providers--*NOT* the same thing as having a TOS for some jerkwad who wants to sell crap in the comments). Whoever owns the site, well they pay for the site and they get to control the content, unless the content itself is illegal. Thus, they may allow or disallow whoever they please, and they can edit comments however they please--again, so long as it doesn't violate any laws nor does it violate the TOS contract they've got with their own service providers.

Ace of Spades HQ isn't a government site or organization--they don't HAVE to let anyone say anything as no one who visits the site has a first amendment right to post their comments. So this isn't about censorship. If you're a visitor, you have no right to display a comment. End of story.

You're seeing the difference between internal and external networks. Microsoft tends to use 192.xxx.xxx's by default other's may use 10.xxx.xxx.

The link between your PC and DSL/Cable modem almost always stays the same (unless you've got your own internal machine somewhere handing out internal IP's and leases, or a DSL router with a couple of machines plugged into it.), the modem's IP not so much.

All I did was reboot the machine (and power up DSL box) this morning. Its running Windows 2000 and is plugged into the DSL box directly with one of those funky back-to-back type ethernet cables.

The IP address a LAN card is bound to isn't going to be what the world sees. Today my LAN adapter's IP is 192.168.1.96 -- which is a "private" IP address. The DSL box has an IP address it shows to the world of 77.128.134 which is going to be different in about 30 seconds ;->
