— Dave in Texas What happens when vehicles we all drive are legislated out of existence?
Americans behind the wheel die.
According to a 2003 NHTSA study, when a vehicle is reduced by 100 pounds the estimated fatality rate increases as much as 5.63 percent for light cars weighing less than 2,950 pounds, 4.70 percent for heavier cars weighing over 2,950 pounds and 3.06 percent for light trucks. Between model years 1996 and 1999, these rates translated into additional traffic fatalities of 13,608 for light cars, 10,884 for heavier cars and 14,705 for light trucks.12* A 2001 National Academy of Sciences panel found that constraining automobile manufacturers to produce smaller, lighter vehicles in the 1970s and early 1980s "probably resulted in an additional 1,300 to 2,600 traffic fatalities in 1993."13
Every. Goddamned initiative. Kills people.
Your son. Your daughter. Mine. The crash cage can only do so much against the inertia.
They are killing us with their rules. The rules we thought, when they initiated them, were intended to save lives.
No more.

The rules will cost consumers an estimated $434 extra per vehicle in the 2012 model year and $926 per vehicle by 2016, the government said. But the heads of the Transportation Department and Environmental Protection Agency said car owners would save more than $3,000 over the lives of their vehicles through better gas mileage."
$3,000? Not when they push the price of oil through the stratosphere.

Where'd you ever get that idea from? Dems never do anything to save lives, since that just drives up health care costs. Dead people are cheaper to insure and their voting skews almost exclusively Demoncrat. It's a win-win from the left's point of view.

The annual tailpipe emissions checks are enough to crush out any carburetor-fed vehicles already. The outlawing of "non-green" old cars is coming, and soon.
In Dallas, the EPA keeps telling city leaders that their air is not clean enough
Dallas leaders choose to dilute their numbers by including surrounding Rural counties, even if they don't share an actual, physical border with them, by claiming that most of the rural county residents commute to the big city anyway.
We have been fighting this for years. What absolute horseshit.

Next they will mandate windmills in every yard to generate electricity to run our households. When we go out to eat, we will be fined double the price of any deemed unhealthy food. We will be pulling little red wagons around to save the environment because gas is too expensive. The Twilight Zone is getting more realistic every day. It is scary but that's there motive. Humor, parody, mockery etc. will "punch them down" to use an over-used phrase.

Each auto company will have a different fuel-efficiency target, based on its mix of vehicles. Automakers that build more small cars will have a higher target than car companies that manufacture a broad range of cars and trucks. For example, passenger cars built by General Motors Co. will need to hit a target of 32.7 mpg in 2012 and increase to 36.9 mpg by 2016. Honda Motor Co., meanwhile, will need to reach passenger car targets of 33.8 mpg in 2012 and ramp up to 38.3 mpg in 2016.
Gee, what a shocka - Obama Motors has a lower standard than Honda! Nooooo, no politics there, noooo.....

We're going to see the same repeat in 2015. Sure, getting a more efficient drive train is market oriented, but when an artificial deadline is created they will have no choice but to once again strip weight off the vehicles that can be used to create a more effective safety cage.

I had a Honda S2000 for a few years when I was in Arizona. Arizona being lifted-truck country, I was often reminded that in an accident I would make contact with the drivetrain under the truck, and not anything designed to actually mitigate the impact. The weight of either vehicle probably would have been of minimal additional importance.

Our Governor Gregoire came out with a study saying the state has 70,000 green jobs now. 10,000 of them were bus drivers and 35,000 were electricians and 10,000 were carpenters. Only 2,600 of the green jobs required the worked to get special training or do anything differently than they did before they became green.

XS11s are still monster bikes, mine's the later model XJ1100, same motor, Maxim bodywork and other bits. I had a wiseco 1298 big bore kit with carillo rods, crank by falicon, and some mid 80's GSXR slingshot carbs. In a straight line it's stupidly fast. Doesn't handle worth shit. Well it does handle, if you imagine you were riding say Rosie O'Donnel with under-inflated tires. And in a corner the shaft jack can make it buck hard enough that you wonder if you're going to ride her the full eight seconds. Other than that it's a peach.

So, what happens when you're coasting your Chevy Volt along and after 7 miles it goes kaput? Guaranteed Capitalism will rise to the scene and charge you x amount of $$ to jolt the battery. Or a taxi driver will benefit. Or someone with an entreprenurial spirit.
There will always be someone out there to make a buck which is the American way. We are not bred to be Socialists.
We had major flooding in Phx, Az in 1987. Cars were stalled all over the place due to water rising up to the door handle. Those that had trucks or more able vehicles offered to help the stalled cars but with a price attached. You can't blame them.

Anyone notice how market conditions did FAR more far faster to drive up the overall gas mileage of vehicles offered? The government, by 2014, will be about 8 years late to the party.
We have many more choices in high MPG vehicles than we did even two years ago.

Cars today (transportation modules, I call them) have all the appeal of a dead tree stump. Don't care if they are engineered well, there is NO attraction for themselves alone, like the older cars had.
Been wrenching for 40 years, finally retired,at the right time, looks like.
However, I AM the proud owner of a brand new 1968 Plymouth Road Runner, and I defy anyone to attempt to deny me that pleasure.

Driving an 18 wheeler is great on factor one - but awful on factor two - the result is that driving an 18 wheeler is about as dangerous as driving a motorcycle - which is great on factor two and awful on factor one. 18 wheelers can't stop, they can't turn, they just smash into things a car could easily avoid. Motorcycles are easily able to avoid most accident conditions - but when they do get into an accident there is a good chance of the driver being killed.
SUV's ARE NOT SAFE. They are about as dangerous as a 2500 lb car. Because SUV's have crappy brakes and aren't maneuverable they have a higher chance of killing you than a 3500 lb sports sedan - which is small enough, and has great brakes and steering to avoid most accidents - but large enough to do well in an accident if it gets in one. The result:: lowest death rate per mile driven is at this (3500 lb sports sedan) vehicle size.
If you don't think brakes and steering make a safety difference lock your steering wheel and cut the brake lines on your car and tell me how long it is until you get into an accident. Those are by far the most important safety features on any vehicle - the better they are the safer the vehicle.
Overall a Hummer is no safer than a small car because the Hummer will get into a lot more accidents. One quarter of all of the deaths in the Iraq war were the result of traffic accidents - mostly in big heavy military vehicles. Death rate per mile driven is the real statistic to look at when judging vehicle safety.

For example: a 2005 G-35 Infiniti has about the same acceleration as a classic tri-power Pontiac GTO from the muscle car era but gets much better fuel economy because the engine losses to friction in normal driving are much lower for the smaller - higher revving more modern engine.
Going to Formula One technology engines would result in an additional big boost in fuel economy.

198 Don't feel uncool -- you own a Harley. If I got a bike, it would be a Harley (but I'll never own one because I think motorcycles are death traps on wheels).

Oh, and Bob's right about driving accidents. SUVs handle like pigs; they take very considerate driving (rollover is a serious issue) and give people a sense of false security. Still, these little jelly bean cars are not safe either and this new mileage standard is a bunch of bullshit.
I'm intrigued with the Formula 1 technology.

we loves us our 2004 Town Car and our 2001 F150 - big, comfortable, huge, SAFE
In the past 20 years my wife was in two major car crashes. In the first one some silly cow ran too fast and blew a curve on snow/ice and came across the road into my wife's lane - speed limit 50 mph. I'd say the collision speed was in excess of 80mph. Our Ford Country Squire station wagon cut the Cutlas in half. Damage to the Ford - new front clip and bumper. It didn't even damage the radiator. Second instance some clown comes barrelling out of a side access road into a 55mph county highway and misjudges the timing. His Chevy pickup off-center head-on's the wife in our F150. Collision speed in excess of 100mph. My wife got a cracked kneecap from the dash board and a couple broken toes from the brake pedal (very common). Both trucks were totalled but both drivers hobbled away alive and lightly wounded.
Try that with your Geo, (not so) Smart Car, etc.

Psychopaths who wants to kill some one and get away with need to drive a big boat. Hummers are available cheap right now - I urge all psychopaths to drive them; not only would their chances of killing some one go up over an optimal sized car - but as a bonus to the rest of us their chances of dying go up also - removing them from the gene pool and improving humanity.
By the way, I have an autographed copy of Atlas Shrugged - I suspect that the difference between us is that I can see the errors in Rand's philosophy (not her fault - she trusted what Aristotle said; he was the one who was wrong).

Shouldn't that be a 3-cylindar motor based on Formulae Uno?
Yeah, it would only cost 16,000 Euros to put a Renwaat 5.5bar turbo in some limey slopbucket, with the pucker factor of blowing the damn thing to the sky greatly reducing the desire to have it repaired soon after.

RE: F1 technology that 'only' runs at 15000 RPMs. You have no idea how much it costs to get an engine to run at 15K RPMs. You're aware that 600CC sportbikes currently have a limit about right around 15K RPMs.
Those are 600CCs with extremely oversquare bores, meaning they make NO torque and are only suitable in a lightweight vehicle (a sportbike weighs about 420lbs full gassed) and don't begin to make power until around 8 or 9 thousand RPMs; F1 engines are the same way; no power until the revs come up, which means you have to go full throttle to get moving, killing your gas mileage.
You think you can throw one of these engines into a 3500 pound vehicle and get it moving? F1 cars weigh about 1100 lbs.
A 15000 RPM engine that makes 90% of it's power in the last 20% of it's rpm range is useless in a street-driven car.
Do you think you can double the engine size and take it 15K RPMs and make it affordable and trouble-free. LOL.
If you want to talk about 'intriguing' technology then then LeMan LMP1 diesels are intriguing.
Sit down and be quiet about shit you have no idea about.
To address your point regarding how likely a vehicle is to crash: A vehicle is 100% unlikely to get into a crash. It doesn't drive itself. It's all about the driver, and most drivers aren't good enough to maneuver either a SUV or a 'lighter' sportscar out of a crash, especially considering most crashes are NOT a result of maneuverability or lack thereof. People crash because they don't pay attention. That's why Mercedes is building in features to compensate for driver stupidity.

" when you get a big heavy vehicle you don't improve your chances of survival "
Bob, can you please cite the research that supports that statement?
NTHSA and others have proven otherwise. I have anecdotal evidence from my family and friends that proves otherwise.
"Psychopaths who wants to kill some one and get away with need to drive a big boat."
Ahhhh, so you admit that silly little 4-speed rollerskates are dangerous to the occupants. Oh and BTW, NTHSA and others have proven that these little cars are more dangerous in ALL crashes including so-called one car accidents. So the real line is, "If you want to commit suicide one should immediately go out and buy a Smart Car and drive it alot."
"Save the planet! But a Smart Car and remove your carbon footprint permatnently!"

RightÂ… Formula One technology. So, youÂ’re given an engine that, in average, has a life of 500 miles. Not 50,000. Not 500,000. 500. They rebuild formula one motors after every race.
Top that with the fact that Formula One engines cost about 25K on the low end, and youÂ’ve got a repair bill that is so big that you could buy a new SUV every year, AND pay for the fuel at 10 miles per gallon, and you are still ahead.
Throw in a little discussion about horsepower vs. torque and the fact that a formula one engine doesnÂ’t make ANY OF EITHER until it hits about 7 or 8 thousand RPM (consider the stall on the torque converter and the amount of slippage necessary to allow 7 thousand RPM to transfer power smoothly to a drivetrain spinning at ZERO RPM at take-off) and youÂ’ve got an engine that overspools like mad just to cruise around a parking lot, and an transmission that roasts itself alive every 20 miles in stop and go conditions.
WhoeverÂ’s idea THAT was is not thinking.
Now, clean diesel technology? That, there, is the future. My wife drives a 1.9 liter VW Golf. It gets 52 miles per gallon, and hauls serious ass. I drive a one ton pickup (for work) that has a diesel in it. A similar truck with a gas motor would be luck to get 10 or 11 miles per gallon. I routinely get 18 and 19. Diesel tech is where itÂ’s at. That, and getting us away from the reciprocating piston ICE paradigm (possibly quasi-turbine phot-ignition engines are the future?)
Posted by: Goober at April 02, 2010 01:57 PM (QNRoi)
To further my point on Formula One – ever watch one of them take off from the pits? What happens? One of three things…
1.) They get a push from a helper truck. This usually happens at the start of the race. Why is that? Could it be because they donÂ’t have enough power below 7K RPM to even get an 1,100 pound race care rolling, much less a 4K pound sedan?
2.) They get a push start from the pit crew, then gun the engine and dump the clutch, spinning the tires as they take off. They don’t do this to look cool or put on a show – it is literally the only way to get the car rolling without stalling it.
3.) They rev the ever loving shit out of the motor and dump the clutch, spinning tires and putting on a hell of a show. Same reason as above. To keep the car from stalling, every time you stopped at a light, youÂ’d floor the gas, wait for the RPMs to come up to 7K or so, then dump the clutch and do a smokey burn-out in order to get rolling. Better not try to learn to drive a stick in one of these. Of course, you could solve the problem by using an automatic with a 7K rpm stall torque converter. You could just, then, burn off all that clutch-dumping shock in friction inside the transmission. You know, wearing, heat-building friction? You know, the stuff that wrecks auto trannies in a few miles?
OK, I’m done making fun of the “Formula One technology in my daily driver” idea.
Anyone want to discuss real options? Clean Diesel? Quasi-Turbines? All-Electric (which, by the way, if we could come up with a way to efficiently store electricity, would be BADASS. 100% torque, 100% of the time. You want power? Drive electric!)
I think the future lies in further research of homogeneous combustion photo-ignition carriage type engines (like the quasi-turbine) and the development of efficient ways to either store electricity or create it in a small space (fuel cells). I would love to have a 150 horsepower electric motor in my truck. It would out-pull my 275 horse diesel any day.
