— Ace As liberal MSNBC (white, of course) host Dylan Ratigan sagely observed, the GOP is using the foulest of Italian stereotypes to hurt the Italian (by way of Greece) Alexi Giannoulias.
Giannoulias... Such a classic Italian name.
You'd sort of have to be a whitebread jackass to not realize that name was Greek, right? The sort of guy born with the surname "Ratigan," whose hippie-dippie parents named him "Dylan," right?
Anyway... when will this anti-Italian assault on the descended-from-a-country-just-an-Andriatic-away-from-Italy might-as-well-be-an-Italian stop?
Thanks to chip.
Sharron Angle also is now returning Harry Reid's fire with a good new ad.
I like Angle's ad better... it gets to the heart of the reason for change.
The anti-Giannoulias ad isn't as effective for two reasons: These funny ads continue to undermine the seriousness of the allegations, making them seem like a goof; and I don't think people care all that much about scandals. Particularly in ObamaTown.

Related across the board.
See. This is what I mean. Nobody probably is going to go out and tell Kirsten Powers how utterly false, misleading, illogical and fucking stupid this article is.
She will get away with spewing this puke and it will get repeated and the left will say, “See! I told you so.” And a few on the right will think that she may actually have her facts straight.
What is reality? Well reality is that during the Russian occupation estimates are that around 1.5 million civilians were killed in A-stan. During the Taliban rule – around 1 million. Since the American involvement – less than 100,000 civilians killed.
Is that too much? For certain! The Taliban ruled A-stan unmolested for around eight years and killed ~1 million civilians. We have been there for 10 years and less than 100k have been killed. IÂ’m thinking a few are around that wouldnÂ’t have otherwise been.
The left controls the terms of the discourse in this country and we shouldnÂ’t allow ourselves to come under that control.
The figures above were found in several places, and are estimates based on those sources since they donÂ’t agree. I believe they are probably pretty close. Wiki Answers, Wikipedia, UN News Centre, etc.
If your interested, the population of A-stan is ~30 million.

So he claims he studied the Constitution, and found a clause that says a former Marine (he is) can kill someone or something (I was laughing so hard I missed the full statement). He apparently wears a badge he made up for himself around his neck. Also, he said that even if the cop who stopped him had found a body in the trunk of his car, he had to right to order him out of the car (or something).
Comedy freaking gold. And sad.

So if you're a corrupt democrat, and you happen to not be lily white, or have what liberals deem as a lily white last name, the GOP is racist for pointing our your corrupt behavior, and because you don't have a lily white last name (whatever that means) and you are a democrat, your corruption is not any problem at all to the elite state-run pro-democrat media.

Meanwhile, Sharron Angle makes me sad to be a conservative/Republican/Tea-Partier/you-name-it. She's the poster child for all the worst possible aspects of the current movement: a shitty candidate spit up by a flawed process. But I don't think it's really meant to be a hit piece. It is being used to keep these things fresh in the voter's minds. And it uses humor to do that in a not so annoying way.
So, as an Illinoisan, it's fine by me. As long as Kirk kicks this guy in the nuts with all the facts during the debates. Giannoulias is a terrible debater from what we've seen so far.. if Kirk can get him on the ropes in the debates and get that flop sweat flowing, it will be a sweet sight to see.

Just curious - you do you live in Illinois? Chicago, especially? Because for those of us who are from there (okay: for ME) I have to say I see it the exact opposite way. This ad is wonderfully effective because this is all we have been talking about up here in this race. Seriously, the media was going gangbusters to inflate Kirk's mini-fracas about his military service up into a Major Scandal precisely because you just CANNOT AVOID this shit about Giannoulias. And the "Godfather" font might be seen as a cheap shot for any other candidate, but not Sexy Lexi -- you have to understand that the words "Alexi Giannoulias" and "mob banker" have been joined at the hip for several years now in Chicago parlance...this is not a new thing.
It's beautiful, really, just how corrupt and incompentent Giannoulias is.

I've seen Kirk in action many times -- both in debates, and speaking to him in person, and observing him in person doing the old retail politickin' give-and-take thang -- and the one thing I'm biblically certain of is that he will crush Giannoulias in a debate. He comes off as the opposite of slimy, whatever that is. ("Boy Scout"-ish seems about right, which is incidentally is why the whole Army Intel fracas was such a ball-buster. Kirk may be a semi-squish on some social issues -- welcome to IL-10! -- but the one thing he is emphatically NOT is a stereotypical weaselly Chicago pol.)
I've also observed Alexi up-close. He is actually pretty good in the scrum -- the face to face stuff -- because he's handsome, athletic fellow who carries himself with confidence. If he's fielding only softballs, he can actually come across as reasonably likable. But he freezes up like a deer in the headlights in the face of substantial questions, and he is utterly unable to handle discussions of his own record, either as Treasurer or at Broadway Bank.
There's just no reason why Kirk should lose this. But then hey, look at the Colorado GOP! Or the Nevada GOP!

Any thoughts from downstate on Brady? I'm in Madison temporarily, so I don't hear quite as much buzz on the governor's race as I should. Brady's still a complete cipher to most of us in Chicago and North Illinois...and I'm thinking that's 100% A-OK, because the more the collar counties think of Brady as a mere abstraction of "not-Quinn" and "not-Blago," the better really. How's he doing?
Incidentally, I predict a clean sweep in Nov: not only do Kirk and Brady win, but Bob Dold retains Kirk's old IL-10 seat as well (which would leave the national Dem party even more slaughtered, gutted & heartbroken than they would otherwise be, given that it's one of four congressional seats they think they can win this year). Meanwhile Phil Hare and Debbie Halvorsen are introduced to the joys of early retirement. Maybe Bill Foster too? A man can dream...

And even if it was, well, remember the crap Kennedy had to put up with. The best way to deal with genuine bigotry is to give 'em what they don't expect, and force 'em to deal with the fact that, yeah, you're good enough to be here. Anything else just reinforces it, and nothing gets better.

As an Illinoisian (and one of significant Italian heritage, so fuck you haters) I think the ad works:
Alexi is a mobster, and he's connected with mobsters. The snippet with Al Capone was a nice touch -- income taxes. Kirk is not popular, but Alexi is beyond mobbed up and the people of IL would pay dearly for his corruption -- that's the winning attack for Kirk here imho.
I agree with my fellow LOL peeps here: if Kirk follows up on this with exposing Alexi's desire to raise taxes and tie him to the freaking bank bailouts (oooh, that would be nice), then Kirk should win this in a walk over. If they can get Lexi and Pat Quinn together...even better.
And once again -- screw you to all you whitebread Eye-tie haters out there; we don't like you too much either ;P

Greek ... Roman ... Meh. It's all Greco-Roman. They're the same, as evidenced by the fact that there is Greco-Roman wrestling. No one complains about mixing Greek and Roman together in that, but you get all bent out of shape because someone thinks that a name that ends in "oulias" is Italian. Anyone could make that mistake. It's like people who think that only a real retard would call McDonald a Spanish name, when it's obviously Swedish.
The honorable Dylan Ratigan was just assuming that everyone associated with the mob was Italian. That's the sort of stereotyping that a good liberal understands is part of his job. We don't care about no stinking names.

It's funny, pretentious, and a little sick that these non-colorful persons appoint themselves Identifiers of Perceived Slights Against Those Not So White.
And once they've identified the "offense", I guess they fancy themselves some sort of Champions of Diversity. I betcha five bucks Dylan Ratigan couldn't quote one classic Joe Pesci line. I bet he never ate baccala, wouldn't even know where or when to find it. I bet Ratigan doesn't even have his own Italian tailor, he probably buys his suits off the rack.
