New Rasmussen: Coakley's Lead is Down to Two
— Ace

Guys? This is going to happen.

I've already decided the Globe poll was nonsense and that of course the Democratic Party's own poll is worth doodley squat.

So now we have one poll showing a one point Brown lead, and this one showing a two point deficit.

It's going to happen.

Woot: AHFF Geoff notes without leaners included (who may not vote, after all), Brown's really one point ahead.

And on Twitter, Slublog points out something astonishing: Among likely unaffiliated voters, Brown leads 71-23.

Of course, he's going to need that sort of lopsided split to offset the massive, massive Democratic advantage. But I'm pretty sure a lot of Democrats will be voting for him.

More: Via Allah's mighty Twitter feed -- even internal Democratic polls only show Coakley ahead by five.

Cratering: Same internal poll, down from 15 a week ago to 5 now.

Thanks to enoxo.

Panic Button: From Coakley's call to donors...

“It’s a little frightening how much traction he’s been able to get so quickly,” Coakley said on the call, which I was able to listen in on this afternoon, adding that he’d successfully used terror and joblessness to stoke voter fears.

Coakley also pleaded with donors to come through with last-minute funding for what she said would be an extremely pricey home-stretch. “It’s astounding how expensive this is,” Coakley said, saying additional TV ads are on the way. “We can’t stress enough how urgent it is. We need $400,000 in additional TV, $325,000 in getting out the vote mailings, and $80,000 in robocalls.”

Thanks to LoopyD of Spitfire Murphy.

Not so fast.  Geraghty's take is probably right.  Mass. is so Dem. that this just means the national Dems are going to have to spend lots of money to buy, uh, enhance turnout.

But, yeah, I'm donating anyway.  Even a close loss could make the difference in stopping the health care bloat bill.

27 Dammit, ace, I'm trying not to get a woody over this thing because the morning-after blueballs are going to be really painful if and when he loses. The ultimate truth of this is that he's campaigning in the bluest of blue states, for the old seat of Saint Teddy. I'm stoked as hell that it was even close; a win would be.... Man, just don't tease me. If our hopes get too high, the fall will be correspondingly harder if he loses.

Posted by: Monty at January 12, 2010 01:19 PM (4Pleu)

28 I'm still skeptical since it is Massachusetts, after all.  I hope I'm wrong, though.  A Republican win would be the death knell of Obamacare and pretty much the rest of his agenda, regardless of whether or not Brown was seated in time to cast the 41st vote against cloture.  This would be such a political earthquake that any Democrat who is the least bit squishy on the reform bill would find an excuse to vote against it.  Support for it would crater.  Count on it.

Posted by: rsrobinson at January 12, 2010 01:19 PM (zircD)

29

If, and still an if, he can actually pull it off, what will be the excuse?? Cold weather? Special election? Day after a holiday? All of the above? Take your pick.

Just like NJ and VA, they (Dems and the defunct media elites) will spin it any other way so it's not presented as to what it truly is: a referendum on Reid/Pelosi/Obama.

And really, even if he can't win, which will be a crushing disappointment, the fact that he came so close in this state is room for optimism.

By hook or by crook, the Democrats will not allow the GOP to claim this seat.  Probably by crook.

You shoulda heard 'em, trying to out-moonbat each other. Four dim bulbs:  Coakley, Khazei, Rep Capuano (pelosi's footstool), and Celtics-owner Steve Pagliuca. They kept arguing who was more pro-abortion among the four of them. I shit you not

Pagliuca was the funniest candidate. A billionaire, was Mitt Romney's former business partner, and seemed to be a Republican...until he decided he was a Democrat and wanted to run for Deddy's seat.

Pagliuca spent millions $$ running constant TV ads telling everyone how he was a regular joe and a moonbat. He came in 4th! Capuano ran tv ads against Dick Cheney. Capuano came in 2nd.

Is it possible that this entire nightmare could be over?

Is it really possible?

I shouldn't be pinning all my hopes for the future on this one guy, but I gotta be honest with you, I am. I see this as the end of the recession. If the insanity in Washington would just stop, maybe all that cash would come off the sidelines and people wouldn't be so terrified to do anything. We could go back to work, invent things, open businesses, look for customers.

I don't pray a lot, but I'm praying for Brown.

PS I've been reading the comments in the Globe and Herald and have noticed Mass. commenters saying something along the lines of they're voting for him now to stop the machine. He may never get their vote again, but they seem to be agitating for votes for Brown as teaching the Dem party a lesson or something. I don't really care if they are back to being Dems in a year, just hope it isn't hot air.

120 re 62: Brownian motion is the seemingly random movement of particles suspended in a fluid.

Consider a large balloon of 10 meters in diameter. Imagine this large balloon in a football stadium. The balloon is so large that it lies on top of many members of the crowd. Because they are excited, these fans hit the balloon at different times and in different directions with the motions being completely random. In the end, the balloon is pushed in random directions, so it should not move on average. Consider now the force exerted at a certain time. We might have 20 supporters pushing right, and 21 other supporters pushing left, where each supporter is exerting equivalent amounts of force. In this case, the forces exerted towards the left and the right are imbalanced in favor of the left; the balloon will move slightly to the left. This type of imbalance exists at all times, and it causes random motion of the balloon. If we look at this situation from far above, so that we cannot see the supporters, we see the large balloon as a small object animated by erratic movement.

Considering Brown's pollen particle moving randomly in water: we know that a water molecule is about 0.1 by 0.2 nm in size, whereas a pollen particle is roughly 25 Âµm in diameter, some 250,000 times larger. So the pollen particle may be likened to the balloon, and the water molecules to the fans except that in this case the balloon is surrounded by fans. The Brownian motion of a particle in a liquid is thus due to the instantaneous imbalance in the combined forces exerted by collisions of the particle with the much smaller liquid molecules (which are in random thermal motion) surrounding it.

Can anyone see the allegory here?

Which is pretty damn good, if you ask me. I know a lot of you turds think little of Romney's conservative bona fides, but speaking as an ardent conservative myself and longtime political junkie, Romney is a good conservative and a damn good Republican.

So that's who Scott Brown is. If you like Mitt Romney, you'll like Scott Brown. Or you can keep believing the shit you hear on the toob and keep letting the Northeast liberal thing cloud your judgment.

Heh!  The Democrats weren't supposed to have to work this hard.  This is Ted Kennedy's fricking seat, for crying out loud; you know, the Lyin of the Senate.  This election was basically supposed to be a cakewalk/coronation of Coakley to replace the dead Chivas Regalty.  I think the Democrats assumed they could run a dessicated dog turd, and it wouldn't matter.  I am really hoping and praying that Scott Brown can pull this off, and that it is as spectacular as Bob McDonnell's win in Virginia.  That said, even if he does lose, this race is forcing the DSCC to spend money that they weren't anticipating to spend.  I hope it empties their fricking coffers and shakes their soulless bodies to the core.

I wish Brown would remind the people of the commonwealth that this 'special' election is kind of a farce. The senate seat was supposed to be vacant until we had the special election.

The governor and the state legislature had NO FUCKING RIGHT to change the laws AFTER Kennedy died and appoint a place-holder just so the Democrats could advance their agenda in the interim.

This is fucking bullshit. And the people should be outfuckingraged. I know I am. Paul Kirk is an unelected illegal vote in the US Senate. What happened to the government of the people, by the people, and for the people?

Coakley to donors on private conference call with DNC Chair Slingblade Kaine:

203 I understand perfectly well the game face on idea.
Vote for Brown, send money, but at the same time, be aware of the next step. If he wins, be prepared for a possible fight to stop a weak Republican in the Senate from switching a vote - Half a billion dollars speaks volumes.
And also, don't scream or cry later if Brown - as he indicates he will do - votes with the Dems sometimes on crucial issues down the road.
Right now, the Game Face has to be on to stop that travesty of a healthcare bill from passing.
But while being told to put my game face on, being called every name in the book and ridiculed for stating possible outcomes is not a good way to treat your readers. Especially ones like me who have supported this site and Conservatism in general for quite a while.

It's possible.  That's why the GOTV effort is so crucial.  But we may have to keep reminding ourselves that at this point, a loss is still a win.

As for the "unenrolled" voters, I think most don't really care about the corruption b/c "that's the way it's always been."  Unenrolled doesn't necessarily mean independent, it usually means apathetic.

I went to a legal seminar in Mass last May and couldn't get but one (local) guy to talk politics with me.  He claimed to be a Republican and was a money manager for one of the big funds in Boston. I asked him why they kept electing clowns like Barney Frank and he said nobody would run against him. I asked why he didn't run against Frank and he kind of laughed like there was some joke I wasn't in on.  Is there some joke I'm not in on?

279 B+, This is a once-in-a-generation (20 years) shot at capturing a Senate seat in Mass; Ted Kennedy's seat, no less. It also happens to be a completely unexpected GIFT, a possible way to stop ObamaCare, which was all but passed. And you're complaining Brown may disappoint you in non-specified ways somewhere down the line? What? What? What? Don't look a gift horse in the mouth. If a once-in-a-generation gift is presented to you, try not to complain that the gift may not be *precisely* what you would have bought for yourself if you had an unlimited budget and the item even existed at all.

285 Ace, I am pro-Brown. What I should have typed (the comment that set this whole thing off) is that while I personally believe Brown could be a problem down the road, right now, even Satan is better in that seat than Coakley. She and the Democrats have to be stopped. Rest assured you can count on my support for Brown and Conservatives. But I am really really really hoping he doesn't do a 180 on us someday. That said, there is nothing to be done BUT do the right thing and put Brown in office. We'll have to deal with any (possibly, possibly not) problems later. Fair enough?

Posted by: Fresh Air at January 12, 2010 04:24 PM (c/qlU)

287 B+, Andy

My suggestion would be to research Coakley's record and get the word out about it. There's plenty there, starting with today's garden club story and the paedophile priests, the rapes, and the terrorists (I think we have one locked up in Sudbury).  Also keep mentioning her ties to the massachuetts machine, and "big pharma" (aka that fundraiser).

Even if Mr. Brown won't (and shouldn't) campaign/attack negatively, that's not to say we can't.  But at least be as calm with the truth about her as possible.  Don't embellish; the truth speaks for itself.

Posted by: someone2 at January 12, 2010 04:25 PM (r3dr/)

Posted by: B+ at January 12, 2010 04:25 PM (hIOnV)

289 I get frustrated by what I call "Hypothetical Politics." In Hypothetical Politics, we are each free to dream up some imaginary candidate we would support, if he existed. This has nothing to do with real-world politics except to the extent it distorts it. I don't really know much about Scott Brown except he's campaigning, generally, as a real-life Republican (even a conservative leaning one!), and is vowing -- making it a centerpiece of his campaign, in fact -- to filibuster ObamaCare. And the other thing I know about him is he is REAL. His name is REALLY on the ballot. He REALLY has a chance of winning. I am just so tired of people who want to do nothing but talk about Hypothetical Politics with fantasy candidates who support their agenda 100%. This is the real world. Specifically, this is Massachusetts. And without knowing a lot about Scott Brown, I can tell you he has one major advantage over any Hypothetical Politics candidate you can postulate: He exists.
