— Pixy Misa Hi everyone. If you were awake for some reason and noticed the downtime, that was us moving to our new server, which is even shinier than our previous new server.
I emailed Ace to let him know it was happening today, not realising he was taking a few days off. Sorry about that!
Server specs by request:
Dual Xeon 5670 (total 12 x 2.93GHz cores)
24GB ECC Registered RAM
Adaptec 5805 RAID controller with battery backup
3 x 2TB disks, RAID-5
3 x 32GB Intel Enterprise SSDs, RAID-5
2 x Gbit ethernet - 1 for the the private network, 1 for the internet link (yep, we have a full gigabit link to the internet)
Dual (redundant) power supplies
Running CentOS 5.4, latest OpenVZ and CPanel
The server is upgradeable to 12 disks total and 144GB of RAM.

(Sigh),, I'm sick and tired of everyone talking behind my back, calling me a wimpy effeminate man so I decided to put some manly shop tools in the White House basement where I could exhibit my masculine mastery of fabrication, auto repair and in depth home improvement. Here's what I've learned so far;
DRILL PRESS: A tall upright machine useful for suddenly snatching flat metal bar stock out of your hands so that it smacks you in the chest and flings your beer across the room, denting the freshly-painted project which you had carefully set in the corner where nothing could get to it.
WIRE WHEEL: Cleans paint off bolts and then throws them somewhere under the workbench at the speed of light . Also removes fingerprints and hard-earned calluses from fingers in about the time it takes you to say, Oh sh*t...
SKILL SAW: A portable cutting tool used to make studs too short.
PLIERS: Used to round off bolt heads. Sometimes used in the creation of blood-blisters.
BELT SANDER: An electric sanding tool commonly used to convert minor touch-up jobs into major refinishing jobs.
HACKSAW: One of a family of cutting tools built on the Ouija board principle, It transforms human energy into a crooked, unpredictable motion, and the more you attempt to influence its course, the more dismal your future becomes.
VISE-GRIPS: Generally used after pliers to completely round off bolt heads. If nothing else is available, they can also be used to transfer intense welding heat to the palm of your hand.
OXYACETYLENE TORCH: Used almost entirely for lighting various flammable objects in your shop on fire. Also handy for igniting the grease inside the wheel hub out of which you want to remove a bearing race.

PHILLIPS SCREWDRIVER: Normally used to stab the vacuum seals under lids or for opening old-style paper-and-tin oil cans and splashing oil on your shirt; but can also be used, as the name implies, to strip out Phillips screw heads.
STRAIGHT SCREWDRIVER: A tool for opening paint cans. Sometimes used to convert common slotted screws into non-removable screws and butchering your palms.
PRY BAR: A tool used to crumple the metal surrounding that clip or bracket you needed to remove in order to replace a 50 cent part. HOSE CUTTER: A tool used to make hoses too short.
HAMMER: Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a kind of divining rod to locate the most expensive parts adjacent the object we are trying to hit.
UTILITY KNIFE: Used to open and slice through the contents of cardboard cartons delivered to your front door; works particularly well on contents such as seats, vinyl records, liquids in plastic bottles, collector magazines, refund checks, and rubber or plastic parts. Especially useful for slicing work clothes, but only while in use.
SON OF A B*TCH TOOL: (A personal favorite!!) Any handy tool that you grab and throw across the garage while yelling SON OF A B*TCH at the top of your lungs, just as your in-laws or any impressionable children walk through the door. It is also, most often, the next tool that you will need.

Probably not. RS has become more consumer oriented. But I am sure you can get every bit of it through Amazon, which is where I get most of my stuff now.
And as to cost, the last time I bought any of that kind of stuff it was expensive as hell, but that was a few years ago. I expect the price has come down some now.

It doesn't have the very latest kernel stuff, so, for example, I didn't end up running the ext4 filesystem before it was discovered that ext4 had a nasty habit of losing files. I have found that since I went to FF with ad-block and did not load flash player the pages load very fast. I have every few problems with it hanging up anymore and on top of that it is a lot safer for those damn fake virus scan trojans.

Yep, we're using OpenVZ for virtualisation. It's lightweight and more resource efficient than other systems, but it only lets you run Linux VMs.

Despite his superior press, Barack is nowhere near as clever as Clinton. I think this is Clinton just setting The Won up. It is no lose for Clinton. He is carrying Demo water so he is obviously being a team player and can't be blamed if things go south. OTOH, he is perceptive, and must know how this sort of rhetoric irritates people. Its not so much that its loading slow, its doing that thing again where the page only loads up to a certain comment number and the comment box doesnt appear at the bottom of the page.
I recall you mentioning awhile back that spam has a lot to do with it.

I just fired up a brand new home PC last night, although it's not as impressive as your server it's the nicest PC I've ever owned.
Dual core AMD Athelon at 2.5GH, geeked to 3GH, 2GB memory at 800MH (couldn't afford the 1066), a huge Cooler Master CPU cooler that barely fit, 9 bay tower (can't figure out the front audeo plugs, no standard pinout maybe, back ones work fine though), 550W PS, a serviceable microATX MB, 500GB SATA HDD, GeForce 9800 video (I'm a gamer), Windows XP Home (32 bit OS on a 64 bit MB, *sigh*, only SN I have without buying a new one), Viewsonic refurbished wide-screen monitor, new mouse and keyboard (wow I can read the letters and no crumbs!)

It did it a few times earlier in the thread not long after the first spam wave arrived. I guess when the spam hits it infiltrates just about every thread on here temporarily overloading the server. Since then, no problems.

LOL, when I first moved to SC I used to have to go up to Raleigh on business quite a lot. Cary was a nice little community where I would stay overnight and enjoy the restaurants without all the hassle and crowds in Raleigh.
