Charlie Rangel accuses the President of fighting Dick Cheney's dirty wars. The ethics-challenged representative for NY-15 has (so far) four challengers in his bid for reelection.
BP says the "top hat" is collecting around 10,000 barrels per day and hopes to increase that with a second procedure this week. The estimated flow is 12,000 to 19,000 barrels per day, so that's pretty darn successful.
Fifteen years later, a mother finds her kidnapped kids on Facebook. This is an awful story. The ex-husband kidnapper faces charges and the kids don't want anything to do with the mother who is, after all, a complete stranger.
Afghanistan's first "peace assembly", state-sanctioned and with delegates from around the country, has determined that the best course of action to end the war is to reach out to the Taliban. Obama's "off ramp" deadline for Afghanistan looms.
Classy dame Sandra Bullock makes first appearance since divorce news to accept Troops Choice Award for Entertainer of the Year. To standing ovation, she jokes: "I would do it over again if it was to entertain our troops , and our extraordinary troops deserve something much more than some actress in a tight dress talking about herself." I bet the tight dress doesn't hurt, though.

Source not credible. I imagine that number will be adjusted at some point to reflect a better truth. Kinda like employment numbers from Team Obama that trumpet optimistic numbers initially and then ignore (with MFM collusion) the real numbers that come out later with no fanfare.

The top U.S. students will go to schools that guarantee full tuition or be on a combination of scholarships and private support to fund their degrees. The rest of tuition will be picked up by either federal funds (if the Obamatroids maintain power) or by foreign students. The fact of the matter is that there are plenty of wealthy parents in Asia who will send their kids to U.S. colleges and universities and pay full freight to do so.
So what you will see is a widening gap between the elite colleges and the community colleges. The middle will dry up, which is sad, but a degree from the University of Chicago or Stanford will still be worth a lot.

How far the UK has fallen in just over a hundred years (while muslims haven't changed one iota). Winston Churchill, The River War, 1899:
How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries.
Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live. A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity.
The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property, either as a child, a wife, or a concubine, must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men. Individual Moslems may show splendid qualities. Thousands become the brave and loyal soldiers of the Queen; all know how to die; but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it.
No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science (the science against which it had vainly struggled) the civilisation of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilisation of ancient Rome.Churchill would be utterly disgusted at the suicidal path the West is taking.

It's not a bubble, but government interference in college tuition and textbooks has made those prices which rise faster than inflation every single year (often far outpacing inflation) with less being purchased for more with each passing day.
I get a real kick out of the fact that e-books charge about the same price as regular textbooks did, which has to be one of the most insane things I've ever heard of in my life. An e-book should never cost more than a couple of dollars, but they can charge $70 for a few megs of info because the government is really the purchaser, for the most part.
As to the schools, themselves, Hah-vahd deserves to be burned to the ground. I am hoping that there is soon a major backlash against Hah-vahd scum. Bright people go to Hah-vahd, but the school sees its mission more in certifying inept losers (for affirmative action purposes) than in maintaining any sort of intellectual integrity and it is more likely than not that a Hah-vahd grad is an incompetent affirmative action creation than anyone with a brain, these days.

There's probably some truth to that.
I know they aren't spending it on salaries, though. Grad students get nothing and postdocs, who do most of the work in science, get next to nothing. Most places pay 9 mos salaries for faculty, as if a professor, particularly a research professor, takes the summer off.
Administrators are underpaid as well.

Schools are relieved of many costs and can add to their endowments (though many endowments got destroyed in the wake of the credit crisis) and much of the money goes to kickbacks on construction projects the schools run. Lots of kickbacks for overpriced services of all sorts.
The textbook money, of course, goes right to the publishing companies - with some kickbacks to schools and administrators who shill for them with academia.

"News bites" is a metaphor describing news stories as small and quickly disposed of, as a bite compares to a whole meal. "News bytes" is a pun, a homonym that extends the term "news bites" to electronic media.
I didn't use "news bytes" because it's a bit too precious. Also, entirely overdone. This isn't 1995, after all.

Mr. Y-not and I have worked in higher ed for two and a half decades at various institutions, public and private, most of our friends over the years have worked in higher ed administration, and I have never heard of (or even suspected) a kick back on any capital project.
I do not understand why costs keep rising in higher ed, but I suspect that if you tracked when the boom construction times were for colleges and universities you'd find that there is a lot of aging infrastructure out there that is being replaced now. Science buildings and even teaching buildings are much more expensive to build or even rehab now than they were a couple of decades ago. Although most places will use private funds for those projects, they rarely (I actually only know of one specific example) raise funds to endow the costs of maintaining those building projects. Plus, it's quite difficult to raise money for things like parking lots and HVAC systems.
I really don't think you need to invoke nefarious causes like kickbacks to explain the increases in tuition. I think it's more to do with your first point, that the government interference is enough to support inflationary trends, similar to what you see with insurance and medical costs.

I wasn't blaming the kickbacks and such for the rising tuition costs (far outpacing anything sensible) but only offering them as an explanation for where the wasted money is going. Clearly, tuition rate rises are directly caused by the government interference.
Schools have also wasted a lot of the money on creating worthless departments that should not even exist.

No, what they do is point to expenses they were planning on making anyway, such as lab renovations, or use privately funded expenses like endowed professorships to show "matching" for large proposals (of course $500K is chicken feed; even I had a $1.2 grant as a junior faculty member) and even then those sorts of things are not routine. Mr. Y-not was in sponsored programs before his current role - cost sharing is not that big a factor. It's mostly an illusion.

looks like Lanny Davis is pretty pissed at Helen thomas's racist rant.
DavisÂ’s full statement:
“Helen Thomas, who I used to consider a close friend and who I used to respect, has showed herself to be an anti-Semitic bigot. This is not about her disagreement about her criticisms of Israel. She has a right to criticize Israel and that is not the same as being an anti-Semite.
However, her statement that Jews in Israel should leave Israel and go back to Poland or Germany is an ancient and well-known anti-Semitic stereotype of the Alien Jew not belonging in the ‘land of Israel’ — one that began 2600 years with the first tragic and violent diaspora of the Jews at the hands of the Romans.
If she had asked all Blacks to go back to Africa, what would White House Correspondents Association position be as to whether she deserved White House press room credentials — much less a privileged honorary seat?
Does anyone doubt that my friends Ann Compton, head of the WHCA, and Joe Lockhart, who believe in the First Amendment right of free expression as much as I do, would be as tolerant and protective of HelenÂ’s privileges and honors in the White House press room as they appear to be if she had been asking Blacks to return to Africa? Or Native Americans to Asia and South America, from which they came 8,000or more years ago? I doubt it.
Of course Helen has the right as a private citizen under the First Amendment to speak her mind, even as an anti-Jewish bigot – but not as a member, much less privileged member with a reserved seat, in the WH press corps.
In my opinion, her apology was not direct and didn’t address the merits of her belief in the stereotype that Jews are aliens in Israel and don’t belong there. She should be at the least suspended from all privileges in the White House press room since bigots don’t merit such privileges. And I believe Hearst should consider a similar suspension of her position as a nationally-syndicated columnist until she owns up to her bigotry and apologizes for it.”

Posted by: Mark in Spokane at June 06, 2010 02:13 PM (UaVQh)
I think that depends on the subject...a lot of cost in "soft" subjects goes to royalties for included content. My "history of clothing" textbook, written by my professor and about ten years old when I took the class in 1999, was over a hundred dollars because every reproduction of a painting or statue or fashion plate had to be squared with the copyright holder--a museum, another university, or a publisher (Godey's Ladies Book is defunct, but Vogue and Harper's Bazaar still publish). There was a lot of descriptive text about materials and such, but the best way to learn the subject was to look at source material. The only real savings from releasing a new edition as an e-book would be paper and binding.

Not really. About 20 years ago I had to pay over $100.00 for a Anthro lab "text" which was nothing more than a collection of journal articles. Our Prof put it together, had it printed locally and was gonna charge about $25.00 for it (figuring the info was in the public domain) but the journals went apeshit because they wanted their cut. So it wasn't really the government at fault as the purchaser of information -- it was the government at fault as the controller of how it was disseminated.
"Higher Education" is just another racket that government enables and protects.

--There's another consideration beyond any savings: With e-books you can more easily control the secondary/grey market. Many e-books are impossible to read in more than one machine, so you'd have to sell or lend out your Kindle as well as the material if you want to recoup some of what you spent on the e-book.

Copyright isn't really just to "enable and protect" "Higher Education" (although I won't argue that they have quite a racket going with the journals). The reason nothing created these days in the U.S. will ever enter the public domain without expressly put there by its creator is Disney. Everytime it starts looking like that first Mouse short might enter public domain, they bribe some Congresscritters.
(Still don't understand why copyright goes after the creator's death. I don't get to sit and collect checks from the work my grandfather did 50 years ago, why should Lisa Marie Presley's kids?)

Those journals only had the gall to demand much of anything because of the incredibly skewed prices that they have received through academia.
I used to be charged over $100 for math textbooks that had nothing copyrighted in them. It was just that the textbook market is skewed by the government funding of it, and the whole market has been warped by that.
"Higher Education" is just another racket that government enables and protects.
Posted by: Ed Anger at June 06, 2010 06:18 PM (7+pP9)
That's too true. And the government does worse, since it sucks private capital through taxes to subsidize the higher-ed market and enable its rocketing costs, even as the huge deflationary pressure of technological progress should make what the universities do that much cheaper.
Of course, we see this very clearly in the fact that most universities charge about the same tuition rate for on-line courses as for regular brick-and-mortar classes. That is clear proof that it is all a scam.

A son of former ABC News anchor Ted Koppel was found dead in an apartment after a day of bar hopping with a man heÂ’d just met, a law enforcement official said yesterday. A drunken Andrew Koppel, 40, had been placed in a back bedroom of the Manhattan apartment to sleep it off and apparently had been dead for hours before anyone realized, said Belinda Caban, who lives in the apartment. The cause of death hadnÂ’t been determined, but there was no evidence of a crime, police said.

Why shouldn't they? It's kinda a critical part of their corporate brand.
I think there should be a "continued use" provision in copyright law. So long as you're actually turning a profit off the creation, you (your heirs, etc) own the copyright. But once you stop publishing/disseminating/whatever the work, it drops into the public domain.
Which would have the added benefit of forcing Disney to sell "Song of the South" in the US...

It's an odd pairing considering El Rushbo's history of anti-gay commentary on his conservative radio show and the openly gay "Tiny Dancer" singer's longtime commitment to gay rights.
When has Rush been "anti-gay" on his show? Has he ever said that being gay was an affront or abnormal? I sure as hell don't remember.

Have a legal question if anyone here knows any Texas law (community property state). My wife's father passed away a few weeks ago, when he married his second wife, they had pre-nup worked up stating that whatever they brought into the marriage was theirs, so as far as his real estate he left, it should be protected. But when he died, he had almost 100k in his checking account, a big chunk was a recent repayment of a loan to one of his friends. The checking account is a joint account, which his second wife can sign checks on. Is his second wife entitled to 1/2 of the balance in the checking account?

We have no data regarding what Rush Limbaugh has done to avoid divorce.
From what I read in Zev Chafets' "Rush Limbaugh: An Army of One", Rush's divorces were relatively amicable. Him and his ex-wifes just drifted apart due to different personalities. For example, Rush's second wife liked to go out a lot while Rush liked to stay indoors and tinker with radio stuff.
Yes, yes, they shouldn't have gotten married in the first place. But it happens. And to the person saying that because Rush is a semi-Christian, he should do more to avoid divorce...um, Christian couples have about the same divorce rate as secular couples. That's no shield to making a bad marriage decision.

Though the 10th Doctor used weapons even though he didn't necessarily like them. Didn't quite understand that, but he did. He also seemed like he was a bit of a pacifist even though he killed people, like the Sycorax leader or some other bad guy that he electrocuted. Perhaps he's in favour of self-defense, then. IDK, his policy was rather confusing.

So, I don't have to follow TR's f'in spelling reform list if I don't want to do so. You can keep believing it's a British thing if you so choose, but the fact is that this ^ particular commission endorsed the change from favour to favor. This means that Americans were actually spelling the word as favour until 1907.
