— Ace A short interview. Here are a few questions and answers from the end of it.
NEWSMAX: So how do you classify yourself politically?MILLER: IÂ’m a Republican conservative. I am an objectivist. I do believe Ayn Rand rings true. I am not the more strident type, so I canÂ’t go all the way with it. But I do believe in accountability in the universe.
NEWSMAX: So you’re a Republican conservative, small “l” libertarian. Would that be correct?
MILLER: I hear libertarian thrown around a lot. I am registered as a Republican. As far as defense of the country and fiscal stuff, IÂ’m conservative. And IÂ’m socially liberal.
NEWSMAX: Are you a tea partyer?
MILLER: Yes, I would go in a second. I like the tea party people; I admire them. Yes, you can put me down for that. I like the fact that it stays small. Those big marches peter out the next day. I like the fact the tea party happens in peopleÂ’s drawing rooms.
NEWSMAX: YouÂ’ve denied it before, but your name often comes up as a potential public servant.
MILLER: You know what? As much as I would love to get at a podium opposite Barbara Boxer, and believe me, I have dreams about that, I am just not cut out for it. It’s the glacial aspect of it. It moves so slowly. I would get kicked out. I would just step up to the mic when they gave me my two minutes and say, “This is bull****.” We have got to make sure that these kids come back from war and they never pay another tax. Forget giving $60 million to ACORN; give it to the troops. I would just be so off the reservation that they’d probably kick me out.

Most of you are familiar with the chapter The Grand Inquisitor, yes?
A modern version would be the Janet Napolitano and Eric Holder as the Grand Inquisitors and the Founders as Christ.

Things occur on a faster pace the more local you get. Rather than Washington, clean up CA before a deal's made mandating a national too-big-to-fail bail-out for CA...
Noh mah Ahnahld, too cowardly to admit he's a damned socialist through and through, originally campaign promising to fiscally conserve CA back in the black out of the red.

Miller apparently went to the Ron White school of debating.
White joked that "I got kicked off the high school debate team for saying "Yeah? Well F*CK you!" I thought I had won, 'cause the other kid was *speechless*. I thought that's what we were trying to do."

I'm with Miller on the whole "libertarian" thing. Even libertarians don't know what "libertarian" means. I heard one of Ace's Morons say that "libertarians are conservatives who smoke weed", and that seems as apt as anything. Miller's been pretty open about his political leanings for a long while now -- which probably explains why his television career hit the rocks. The Dennis Miller Show was one of the few shows I actually tried to watch regularly back when it was on.
He's got a radio show now, but I'm not sure of how much of an audience he draws.
Posted by: Monty at May 04, 2010 12:12 PM (4Pleu)
There's no way in Hollywood or NY showbiz other than liberal tolerance of others' sexuality. No surprise. Fiscal conservatism is about the only practical, enforceable "mandate" to counter the liberal socialist taxing to be spent enforcing programmatic social liberalism.

O/T but deliciously delicious! From Hotair:
The DSCC is spending a significant amount of money to ensure a former GOP Sen. Arlen Specter (D-PA) wins his May 18 primary, sources with knowledge of the move tell Hotline OnCall.
One source said the DSCC is using coordinated funds to help Specter keep a robust TV presence. Ads that tout SpecterÂ’s candidacy now say they are paid for by the DSCC; last week, the disclaimers on the same ads indicated SpecterÂ’s campaign had paid for them.
All told, Specter and the DSCC spent about $407K on the joint ad buy last week. A second source said the DSCCÂ’s contribution is about three-quarters of that amount, or around $300K.
Dems backing Specter may be worried that Rep. Joe Sestak (D) is preparing to unleash a slew of late ads in the fortnight before the primary. A new poll released today already shows SpecterÂ’s decisive lead is sagging; he leads Sestak by a 47%-39% margin, just 4 weeks after holding a 17-point advantage.
Bwhahaha!

In other news, one does not want to get tips from Kos readers on NCAA March madness brackets. On the other hand, you should invite several to your local poker game. Just tell them no talking politics during the game., You have more important things to do, like take their money.

Objectivists and Libertarians are not the same thing.
There's a lot of overlap, however.
And like I said: even libertarians can't agree among themselves on what "libertarianism" means. It seems to be a catch-all term for a laissez-faire, market-oriented, small-government, socially liberal ethos. But it's not really a coherent political philosophy (or even an economic one, as far as that goes).
Objectivism promotes a libertarian style of economics, but again, "objectivists" often can't even describe the ethos they claim to believe in. I don't find Objectivism to be all that compelling in most real-world scenarios. (Objectivism as a governing philosophy has real problems dealing with the complexities of large social systems and economies. It doesn't scale well at all.)
I thought Atlas Shrugged was a pretty damned silly book, though I am a great admirer of The Fountainhead. However prescient Atlas Shrugged was about the perils of government intervention in the economy, it was buried under a hysterical plot and sometimes-unreadable prose.

Well that and the fact that she has a streak of her Dad in her. Despite all her freaky tendencies, she does believe in personal responsibility. I remember that US magazine that came out last year where she *allegedly* bashed Obama's policies. I'm not in the habit of caring about US weekly or their readers but I got a kick out of that. heh! The sex scenes were over the top, and it was a little long and verbose, but boy the message was absolutely prescient. We currently have a society of looters and producers, and the gubamint is out of control with regulation and wealth redistribution in the name of "fairness." The one scene where the doctor who went Galt talks about how he was forced to practice and be paid less was downright eerie. (By the time John Galt showed up, I could have cared less. I really want Arlin to win the primary. I think Toomey has a better chance of beating Spector than an undefined Sestak.
Sestak voted right down the line with Pelosi's agenda. I hope Toomey's campaign gets that out to the voters if Sestak's the opponent. Specter has been making noises that he wants Sestak to release his military records. The only reason he demands this is that he knows there's something derogatory in there.
Sestak's campaign has been strangely silent, I haven't heard anything on the radio from him, just starting to see some lawn signs. I think Specter will win due to backing from the White House. If the election is a squeaker, it would be so great to see neither of them concede and have to employ election stealing Dem tactics against each other.

We need more Dennis Miller types in our corner.
But notice that it's Newsmax interviewing him. If he were a liberal, he would be being interviewed and lionized by CNN or the NYT.
Nice to hear him come right out and say it, though. There are some Hollywood types/entertainers who seem to tilt conservative, but when asked directly about it, they start backtracking because of the flack and hate they know they will get. It's probably very difficult to be in that business and be an up front no BS conservative, so I give him a lot of credit.

Monty, from what I have seen reviewing both sites, the Objectivist's main concern is economics and the government taking their resources and giving it to drones.
There was a time in my youth when I read a bunch of the Rand/Brandeis Objectivist stuff. I find a lot to agree with still on specific points, but as both a philosophy and an economic theory it has severe shortcomings. (Like I said: it doesn't scale. At all.) It also discounts the role of plain old human nature in everyday events, which is its ultimate downfall. My game-theory prof and I discussed this at length way back when -- Objectivism cannot "fail gracefully" in any realistic economic crisis, and would inevitably lead to currency crashes and other fiscal crises.
The lesson I took away? If you want a healthy economy, you have to allow for slackers, deadbeats, goldbrickers, idiots, retards, nimrods, doofi, the helpless, the clueless, the spiritless, and so on. I hate subsidizing their miserable asses as much as the next guy, but it's basically impossible to get rid of them unless you're willing to exile them and let them starve. (And even if the committed Objectivist is willing to do this in principle, the principle breaks down if the deadbeat in question is a spouse or family member.)

Deep dark depression, excessive misery!
If it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all,
Gloom, despair, and agony on me!
Loved that show...

I would love for someone to get out there on the Senate floor and have an actual human reaction to the crap that goes on. It would be fantastic.
Joe Wilson's "You Lie" was pretty close!

Mark Knopfler is a teabagger?
Mark Knopfler probably appreciates great guitarists regardless of their personal beliefs.

Beats the hell outta me.
And as a matter of fact, CBS's cancellation of Hee-Haw in 1971 -- along with The Beverly Hillbillies, Green Acres, Petticoat Junction, Mayberry RFD, and every other "rural show" in its lineup -- is still remembered in the television industry as perhaps the single stupidest move ever made by a network. All of these shows were still incredibly popular and were going gangbusters in the ratings, but were yanked anyway by the idiots who ran the network out a concern for their "image". In other words, they wanted to attract more urban liberal douchebags like RayGun upthread.
The result of the "Rural Massacre" was that CBS went right into the ratings toilet for years thereafter. Meanwhile Hee-Haw went into first-run syndication and prospered for another couple of decades.

I have just about ALL of Chet Atkins records
If you don't have it already, I'd recommend Almost Alone as a pinnacle of Chet's playing. It's mainly just him and his guitar, doing what he does best. ("I Still Write Your Name In The Snow" is hilarious.)

I thought they had explained the "taking care of family members" thing pretty well. You did that for your own self-esteem by your own choice. Whereas taking care of the deadbeats in society was done by armed force from the government.
A good Objectivist doesn't abandon their family, especially if doing that results in just another deadbeat for society to take care of.
For me, allowing society's deadbeats to starve is a viable option.

Roy Clark is a true BADASS. Sadly I never got to see him play live.

If you morons and moronettes out there had been doing this all along, California wouldn't be in the shape it is today.
There are too many of them. They keep moving in from out of state. We can't keep 'em out. Believe me, we've tried.

Sadly, I cannot - my cholesterol will (according to my doctor, anyway) rise up and attack me if I so much as look at the sign.

Anybody catch the oral diarrhea from Russel Crowe and Company re: Robin Hood?
Yeah. Guess I'll be torrenting that one too.
16 months without a theater visit, Hollywood. Keep it up.
I am just on the verge of hitting the 2 year mark. My GF begged me to see that one in the theater. Was gonna take her. Now, not so much.

I'll admit Maher's pretty good. But there's little that will beat Jon Stewart playing a video clip of Bush or Palin and then mugging the camera with a goofy face. Every time the audience laughs and applauds I just cream my pants.
