NHL Final Game 6
— DrewM

Blackhawks can close out the Flyers tonight on NBC.

I originally wanted this to go to game 7 but I'm not going to be around Friday night, so I hope the Blackhawks take care of business tonight (yes, it's all about me).

Unfortunately, I think the Flyers will bounce back tonight and force a Game 7 back in Chicago on Friday. It's not as if they haven't had their backs against the wall in these playoffs and both teams have managed to hold serve at home thus far.

Oh, if you're wondering how to pronounce Blackhawk Dustin Byfuglien's last name, watch this video.

And once again, from puking on little girls to little kids drinking beer, Philadelphia fans show their class...

27 Flyers really need to get the first goal.

It sucks to carry the play and energy only to give up a quick counter-punch goal.

Blackhawks are playing a good 1st road period. Survive the initial burst but the jazzed up home team and then go to work.

42 Hockey question from a non-hockey guy:

What does the coach actually do during the game? Does he ever call plays?

So far the main decision seems to be when/if to bench the goalie for the backup -- and when to pull the goalie for the end of game desperation plays.

The answer is yes, to a point. There are a few set plays on the power play, but largely, he's controlling line combinations and monitoring what kind of attack and defensive schemes are being played.

Football coaches are required to wear clothing with team logos on them.  With the exception I think of allowing a suit maybe twice a year that only Del Rio seems to want to do.  Of course the reason for that is actually based on advertising the clothing to people sitting at home.  And its the reason Belichek always seems to wear the ugliest fucking thing he could find.

That area in front of the net (called "The Slot") is often a lot like a pile up for a fumble in football. A lot of nasty, ugly stuff goes on there. There are players who score a lot from there but they take a beating. Your finesse type players don't go there much.

that's nothing, every fan talks big in the blogs about their team

Posted by: YRM at June 09, 2010 05:49 PM (38UQ3)

179 Huh-

You'll often see different lines play different schemes within the same game depending on their matchups. Case in point, you'll see some lines play box plus one with a man in the box (takes away the open guy down low), or a box plus one with a guy outside the box (takes away the shot and motion from the point). You'll see man-to-man played, and you'll see zone played. Schematically, it's often easier to characterize the scheme by its quality- aggressive or passive.

For a team that moves the puck a lot, it's better to play passively, rather than chase the other guys all over the ice. For a team that likes set lanes and positions, you'll play more aggressively. If you want to have a quick counterattack, you'll want two guys playing against the opposition's point men. When it gets late and you're protecting a lead, you'll often play the inside box plus one; you can have some counterattacking chances off the outside box plus one.

There's also a scheme that Detroit pioneered called the left-wing-lock, where the winger plays behind the forwards but in front of the defensemen. That's easier to diagram than to explain.

Best explanation I can give you is to look for the different types as the game continues; I've seen a whole stack of different ones.

Also, we haven't talked about the forecheck (send one guy, send two), which will dictate a lot of what kind of defense you play. The key with all defenses is for the forwards to get back as quickly as possible when the puck is turned over to the other team.

But really, I hear about the "awesome" philly cheesesteaks, and they use melted Velveeta or Cheez wiz? Really? That stuff just grosses me out.

Hey man, Hawks fans are far from fair weather, they just got sick of Wirtz, AND the team sucked for a few years. I just noticed Philly fans BOOING their team on a shitty powerplay. A team that wasnt on anyones radar going in. A team of warriors. (ok theyre not warriors, how bout gritty hockey players) Fair weather fans?

Lastly, Pronger used to play for the Blues, we know him well. And Id be willing to bet any good Hawks fan would love to have him on their team.

When in doubt...SHOOT THE DAMN PUCK.

That's true. It's always been the team with the most shots on goal nearly always winds up with the most goals.

343 342 - JL says +1

I'm still trying to get bombed enuf to see Kane's shot go in in real time instead of the super-speed bullet-cam.  That shit was totally inhuman - can't even blame the netminder when he can't see the fkn thing.  Kane's "girls like me right now" speech rocks, BTW.  As my attorney I advise me to drink heavily....

THX HAWKS.

PS - Philly - stop puking on people, fking with Santa, telling Mick Schmidt he sux, getting Limbaugh fired from ESPN and being the Buffalo Bills of the NFC - it's not cool.  Winning our first Cup in 50 years couldn't taste sweeter than at the expense of the Broadway Bitches.

347 25:  OK, one final ? before I resume drinking - who the hell thinks people who root for a team that hasn't won a Cup in 50 fucking years are "bandwagoners" or "front runners" ?

Insert hand, pull head out of ass.  Rinse.  Repeat.

348 Ah, the Calder Cup final is tied 2-2, and the Bears roll on.  Damn, they're good.

Posted by: logprof at June 09, 2010 08:36 PM (Mmw0q)

349 Bullshit. Sports fans in general are dickheads, no matter what the city. A bunch of drunken man-children starting fights over what fucking piece of laundry somebody else is "rooting" for. and a bunch of spoiled millionaire laughing all the way to the bank while children starve in the streets. Burn, Chicago, burn.

351 No. Keep on spending your emotions and money on a bunch of greedy fucks who could give a shit about anyone else. Keep on thinking that your city is great because a bunch of mercenaries won a foreign sports trophy. Keep pissing on one city for the conduct of their sports fans while your own city's sports fan are no friggin' better. Laugh along with Dear Leader as he pretends to care about hockey and soccer and golf as the world burns.

352 As a life long Saints fan (40 years) and a Hawks fan since the late 80's, this has been a pretty good year. Now just plug the damn leak and it will be a good week.

Yeah, no sports person, especially not hockey players, EVER do anything for charity or the community.

Keep telling me what I should be authorized to spend my money on, you clueless nutjob.

Then when you're through pleasuring your high horse, go play in traffic on your nearest highway, you dreary wailing fuckwad.

354 They do wonders for the community. Tooth donations are their specialty. After the parade on Friday, where hundreds will probably die, the players will go back East Bumblefuck and pick their toes. By all means, spend your money on nothing. That Blackhawks jersey will do wonders for you when the revolution starts. Bring the salt, if it all hasn;t been confiscated yet.

355 Q: Who is more tiresome, Porky or Matt X?

356 That Blackhawks jersey will do wonders for you when the revolution starts.

BWAHAHAHA! The mysterious Internet Revolutionary commands!! Rise up, comrades! Let us exchange one set of fascist totalitarian impulses for another!

357 358 Q: Who is more tiresome, Porky or Matt X? Oh, Porky by a mile. I remember classes at university listening to shit like his comment. "Oh! Musn't have fun with SPORTS! Why do you like it? I don't, and therefore you musn't! I think it's stupid, and therefore you MUST NOT LIKE IT!!!! If it's fun, it's WRONG! I don't care if IT'S FUN!!!!" Worst conservative impulse out there, wish it could be wiped out for all our sakes. Stick it in your ass, Porktastic.

358 In case it got lost in my previous comment... stick it in your ass, Porky.

Posted by: Squatch at June 09, 2010 09:51 PM (+/6so)

359 And in case that one got lost... Porky = has hockey fun in ass.

Posted by: Squatch at June 09, 2010 09:52 PM (+/6so)

360 I'm still not entirely clear where we think Porky should stick it.

Posted by: Waterhouse at June 09, 2010 09:53 PM (6EZ2b)

361 Perhaps... just a sec, lookin' it up... I'm thinking, his ass would be a good place. Hehehehe!

364 357:  When the revolution starts ?

Do any of you cluefuckless wanna-be "revolutionaries" have any hobbies outside of training for the dot-connecting black-helicopter-tracking bunker-digging 2012 Paranoid Intelligensia Olympics ?

I'm truly sympathetic that the jocks in your school gave you that lifelong-trauma-inducing wedgie and stole your girlfriend in the 9th Grade, but please spare those of us who semi-successfully transitioned into adulthood.

Rooting for a sports team is not dysfunctional.  Not rooting for a sports team is not dysfunctional.  Hating on people who do or don't do so solely on that basis is dysfunctional.  Get the fuck over your teens and join the rest of us or kindly shut the fuck up.

Posted by: Spudskie at June 09, 2010 11:16 PM (pvi/L)

366 The only fair thing to do is to take the Stanley Cup away from the Blackhawks and give it to Galarraga! What the hell, shit happens.

The more I think about it the better I like it.  It may just start a movement.

Send in your Super Bowl rings and Olympic medals to:

Armondo Galarraga

My Flyers went down fighting. And for that I'm really pissed off at Obama. Not once did he ever root for the Blackhawks or say "Go Hawks!", giving them the Obama curse. That's the only reason why Chicago won. Obama didn't predict they'd win.
