— DrewM Blackhawks can close out the Flyers tonight on NBC.
I originally wanted this to go to game 7 but I'm not going to be around Friday night, so I hope the Blackhawks take care of business tonight (yes, it's all about me).
Unfortunately, I think the Flyers will bounce back tonight and force a Game 7 back in Chicago on Friday. It's not as if they haven't had their backs against the wall in these playoffs and both teams have managed to hold serve at home thus far.
Oh, if you're wondering how to pronounce Blackhawk Dustin Byfuglien's last name, watch this video.
And once again, from puking on little girls to little kids drinking beer, Philadelphia fans show their class...

Would prefer to see the Flyers win not because I particularly care for Philly, but because I absolutely cannot stand the Hawks or their frontrunning, good-time Charlie, bandwagon fans. Plus the city of Chicago sucks moose dick.

Posted by: MikeTheMoose at June 09, 2010 04:28 PM (0q2P7)
It sucks to carry the play and energy only to give up a quick counter-punch goal.
Blackhawks are playing a good 1st road period. Survive the initial burst but the jazzed up home team and then go to work.

Although I'm cheering for the 'Hawks, in a perverse way I want the Flyers to win tonight, just so hockey lasts one game longer
This is the Bane of all hockey fans...I would gladly take a game 7 if the Hawks were guaranteed the Cup.
Anything short of that and I'm conflicted.

What does the coach actually do during the game? Does he ever call plays?
So far the main decision seems to be when/if to bench the goalie for the backup -- and when to pull the goalie for the end of game desperation plays.

The answer is yes, to a point. There are a few set plays on the power play, but largely, he's controlling line combinations and monitoring what kind of attack and defensive schemes are being played.

Coach works matchups, line composition and set plays from face-off and in power play situations.

Football coaches are required to wear clothing with team logos on them. With the exception I think of allowing a suit maybe twice a year that only Del Rio seems to want to do. Of course the reason for that is actually based on advertising the clothing to people sitting at home. And its the reason Belichek always seems to wear the ugliest fucking thing he could find.

Mike Nolan, when he coached the 49ners sported a suit a few times as well.

That area in front of the net (called "The Slot") is often a lot like a pile up for a fumble in football. A lot of nasty, ugly stuff goes on there. There are players who score a lot from there but they take a beating. Your finesse type players don't go there much.

Another hockey question - what defensive schemes are the Flyers and Blackhawks using? I can only notice the square shaped zone on power play defense.
Chicago's scheme depends on Duncan Keith staying upright.

They booed Santa Claus, you know! Posted by: YRM at June 09, 2010 05:49 PM (38UQ3)
You'll often see different lines play different schemes within the same game depending on their matchups. Case in point, you'll see some lines play box plus one with a man in the box (takes away the open guy down low), or a box plus one with a guy outside the box (takes away the shot and motion from the point). You'll see man-to-man played, and you'll see zone played. Schematically, it's often easier to characterize the scheme by its quality- aggressive or passive.
For a team that moves the puck a lot, it's better to play passively, rather than chase the other guys all over the ice. For a team that likes set lanes and positions, you'll play more aggressively. If you want to have a quick counterattack, you'll want two guys playing against the opposition's point men. When it gets late and you're protecting a lead, you'll often play the inside box plus one; you can have some counterattacking chances off the outside box plus one.
There's also a scheme that Detroit pioneered called the left-wing-lock, where the winger plays behind the forwards but in front of the defensemen. That's easier to diagram than to explain.
Best explanation I can give you is to look for the different types as the game continues; I've seen a whole stack of different ones.
Also, we haven't talked about the forecheck (send one guy, send two), which will dictate a lot of what kind of defense you play. The key with all defenses is for the forwards to get back as quickly as possible when the puck is turned over to the other team.

Pursuant to Red Wings fans- I started off as a Blues fan, moved to Denver, and then lived in Nashville... all I'm missing is Columbus in order to have proper seething murderous hatred for the Red Wings. I couldn't even pull for them when they had Brett Hull and Brendan Shanahan- two of my favorite guys in the game- playing for them. Hell, I couldn't even pull for Steve Yzerman, and you have to be a pretty cold-blooded son of a bitch to not like Stevie Y.

True, but a) I got no problem with the tase, I favor deer rifles for fans who run on the field, b) the woman in question was just some skank who offered the undercover officer a threesome with his brother, c) the guy puked on the daughter of the Chief of Police of Erie, PA, who was sitting right next to her an the time, and d) word out of Philly is that the kid picked up and started yumping on an empty bottle

I dont know, lived in or near Chicago all my life, and the ratio of pizzas eaten by me and most of the people I know, is about 99 to 1, thin crust to deepdish respectfully.
Just saying. Its a touristy thing. Im sure some prefer deep dish, but I cant name many if any, but every time someones comes here, they want deep dish.
But really, I hear about the "awesome" philly cheesesteaks, and they use melted Velveeta or Cheez wiz? Really? That stuff just grosses me out.
Hey man, Hawks fans are far from fair weather, they just got sick of Wirtz, AND the team sucked for a few years. I just noticed Philly fans BOOING their team on a shitty powerplay. A team that wasnt on anyones radar going in. A team of warriors. (ok theyre not warriors, how bout gritty hockey players) Fair weather fans?
Lastly, Pronger used to play for the Blues, we know him well. And Id be willing to bet any good Hawks fan would love to have him on their team.

That shout out to 'the little kid crying after the Hawks lost the cup in 92, I hope you have a big smile on your face now' was great TV.
The guy can be a little much at times but the guy loves the game and he's great on TV because he just lays it all out there. Great job by him.

I already know where the Dakota CC is
Posted by: logprof at June 09, 2010 07:41 PM (Mmw0q)
Not final but the Ice Edge group has a 60 day exclusive window to negotiate a deal with the city that owns the arena.
Bettman wants them to stay there and the city doesn't want to own an empty arena so I bet they work it out.

But, that doesn't take anything away from the Hawks fans here.. been listening to fireworks for the last hour now. Good for them.

I'm still trying to get bombed enuf to see Kane's shot go in in real time instead of the super-speed bullet-cam. That shit was totally inhuman - can't even blame the netminder when he can't see the fkn thing. Kane's "girls like me right now" speech rocks, BTW. As my attorney I advise me to drink heavily....
THX HAWKS.
PS - Philly - stop puking on people, fking with Santa, telling Mick Schmidt he sux, getting Limbaugh fired from ESPN and being the Buffalo Bills of the NFC - it's not cool. Winning our first Cup in 50 years couldn't taste sweeter than at the expense of the Broadway Bitches.
