— Gabriel Malor Democrats in many districts aren't disclosing their polls, which would be the usual practice if there was anything remotely reassuring about the data. Make the contrary inference.
The members who conducted polling are among the GOP's top targets this year. Reps. Mark Schauer (D-MI), Earl Pomeroy (D-ND), Chet Edwards (R-TX)*, Ike Skelton (D-MO), Rick Boucher (D-VA) and Chris Carney (D-PA) were among those who paid for polling. The campaigns involved largely refused to discuss their internal polling, citing policies against revealing internal strategy. Megan Jacobs, a spokesperson for Edwards' campaign, pointed to a strategy memo arguing Edwards' campaign is far ahead, but the memo doesn't cite poll numbers.
Spokespeople for Schauer, Pomeroy, Skelton, Boucher and Carney, along with a dozen other members of Congress, did not return calls or emails seeking comment about their surveys.
But members and candidates will frequently release polls when doing so would help boost fundraising or drive a favorable narrative about their race. As rumors fly almost daily about another internal survey that shows an incumbent in tenuous position, Dems leaving some surveys unreported makes GOPers believe those polls show bad news.
Common feature of many of the listed Democratic names (Carney, Shauer, Pomeroy, etc.): they initially wavered on ObamaCare, but ultimately voted in favor of the unpopular healthcare overhaul...after Democratic leadership promised that it would help them with reelection. Oops.
Oh, and who could have guessed that Democrats in an election year would make noises from their face flaps that sound like Republicans?
*Commenter Naqamel points out that Chet Edwards is a Democrat. The typo is in the original and I'm sure it's a typo. The immediately preceding sentence identifies what follows as GOP targets. Still, good eye, Naq, I've got some stuff you can edit.

Not to worry - the democreeps are going to tax the evil job producing "rich" and save the middle class by extending the evil Bush tax cuts for the "middle class".
The same "Bush middle class tax cuts" that didn't even exist during the Bush years. Amazing. Magically, "Bush tax cuts for the middle class" appear right on time for the mid term elections. Don't be fooled, the taxation sweet spot for democreeps isn't just the already-over-taxed-wealthy, but those making around 150-250K.
So the liar democreeps will attempt to paint Republicans with the same accusations they use at every election: that they like to give tax breaks to the wealthy. Yawn. Meanwhile, Americans are finally waking up to the fact that every 2000 page bill that Barney Frank writes and Obama sings into law, is just more taxation, more job-killing/liberty-killing suffocation.

Umm.. well, no, not until we do an environmental impact study on the effects of logos on mutant bass. Not to worry though, we'll just pull a few hundred million out of the stimulus slush fund and ship it off to Berkley, and we'll have a study that says whatever we need it to say.
On the upside though if we can find a couple of mutant sea bass in the Gulf we can probably get BP to foot the bill for the study. Either way with our government working on the problem we should have an answer sometime in the next 8 years.

I live in Rick Boucher's district and it is in the middle of Appalachian coal country. And that is one of the unspoken and un-talked about elements of the upcoming elections. The Democrat Party, with the Obama-Dem Cap and Trade bill, has firmly cemented its position as the political party that wants to kill coal. The coal miners know this now as a fact. Before the Cap & Trade bill was made public the Democrat politicians from WV, eastern KY, western PA, southwestern VA, the Powder River basin in WY, and every other coal producing area of the U.S. could always claim that they supported coal. Not anymore! The Dem Party is the Kill Coal! party. I have yet to see any reporter or columnist try to analyze or quantify the effect this will have on the voting habits of miners-union and non-union alike. If the Dem Party thinks that union coal miners are going to toe the company line in November, as is usually the case, then they are in for a big shock. The union miners around here now realize that the national Dem Party and its members are more that comfortable with their industry and jobs being eliminated. As those Pro-Coal people tend to say: Kill Coal! THEN FREEZE YOUR ASS OFF IN THE DARK!

Speaking of faith, I'm re-reading this absolutely fabulous piece by David Harsanyi - found here. Read it - he nails it.
One of many money quotes:
"...It was faith in the American people that led to health care legislation that denies you the right to buy insurance outside of state lines or have any useful portability or even enjoy the same tax break that corporations are afforded. The left has so much faith in Americans that it has to force you to purchase a government-approved plan...."

ATLANTA - Georgia voters cast more Republican than Democratic ballots in Tuesday's primary for the first time in state history, a difference of 285,000 votes.
GOP ballots outpaced Democratic ones by a margin of about 3-to-2, according to unofficial returns (63 percent to 37 percent). Overall, about 1.1 million Georgians - or 22 percent of active registered voters - cast ballots in the gubernatorial contest, which drew the most votes, according to unofficial returns.

Not Obama Is Not Enough
There are risks involved, but if Republicans are to be taken seriously, they must be willing to detail specific alternatives to the Obama agenda.
….at some point, blanket Obama-bashing without a comprehensive alternative will turn stale. Critics of Obama — if they are to be taken seriously — will have to be about more than not being Obama. Instead, conservatives must identify exactly how to undo the Obama agenda — and do so in a way that does not earn them the disdain that the Republican Congress earned between 2001 and 2006, and the Republican administration between 2005 and 2009.

Actually, the platform of NO would work: No more government programs we can't pay for
Such as..?
No more saddling our kids and our grandchildren with a debt that can not be paid back
That's a talking point, not a platform. Liberals used that against Reagan.
No more government running the auto industry, healthcare, insurance company and investment firms
As Hanson points out, the GOP will have say a bit more on healthcare.
No more vascillating on Afghanistan
So, get out now? That's not vascillating.
No more tax increases
That's one concrete idea.
If you read Hanson, part of this is not directed at Democrats, but Republicans. If you let them get away with vague platitudes, you'll get 2001-2006 all over again:
We need some notion of a contracted agenda, so that conservative voters can hold conservative politicians to account in this age of anti-incumbency. Voters wanted closed borders, balanced budgets, ethical members of Congress, and less government between 2001 and 2006. They believed that all of that had been promised — and then were sorely disappointed.
In short, conservative voters want to see something specific — as much to keep their own honest as to defeat the other.

The difference between Obama and President Reagan, besides one being a leader and the other being a faculty member, is that in 1982 Reagan's economy was showing signs of improvement.
Paul Volker curbed and corrected Carter's inflation, which set off a quick nasty recession, and the economy was back on track for robust growth and employment.
At the same point in Obama's term, the economy is clearly getting sicker. There is no light at the end of tunnel in this so-called recovery. We are going deeper and deeper into the tunnel.

Obama is the shepherd I did not want.
He leadeth me beside the still factories.
He restoreth my faith in the Republican party.
He guideth me in the path of unemployment for his party's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the bread line,
I shall fear no hunger, for his bailouts are with me.
He has anointed my income with taxes,
My expenses runneth over.
Surely, poverty and hard living will follow me all the days of my life,
And I will live in a mortgaged home forever.
I am glad I am American,
I am glad that I am free.
But I wish I was a dog .....
And Obama was a tree.

Do any moron's drive a Ford Flex crossover vehicle? Like it?
nope, but I think a lot of Ford cars are good looking, and they apparently have good track records.
When i was buying a car earlier this year, it was between a Toyota Rav4 and a Ford Escape.
The only domestic car I would buy is ford.

oh, and CJ and VDH are right: we ain't gonna win shit with this shitty GOP campaign
I've said this a few days ago and didn't get great responses.
The only GOP member who has actually written down his ideas for the future is Paul Ryan.
Boehner and McConnel are happy to win without saying anything. I think this is a bad idea. While it may be enough to win in 2010 by being the "not obama" party, it isn't enough for me.
We have serious problems, we need to have serious discussions and ideas on how to solve those problems.
If the Republicans win without making any promises or promoting any ideas, then they can do whatever they want when they win and not be held to account.
We all just assume they will do what we want, but without puting forth a platform, it allows them to do what they deem politically expedient when they win, not what is right.
I have this creeping feeling that when the republicans win, they will do what they always do, make deals with democrats to share the spoils.

All economists agree? Har. All generalizations are always wrong (most of the time). It's interesting to see that our betters in Europe don't agree. And if your last statement is true, then why did President Obama insist on a pay as you go law? Why is he (occasionally) talking about deficits? You dare disagree with the Dear Leader?

"Feds defend response to Tennessee flooding" or better, "Had there been an actual response, we would be successfully defending it... now... at this present time."

Its great to have big ideas. It helps to actually get elected to implement them. And the last time I checked, DVH, George Will and all the alleged big thinkers of the conservative movement had not won a single race.
No, it's not just 'golly great' to have big ideas, it is essential. Again, just look at 2001-2006 for what happens when conservatives (who are not supposed to define themselves by simply winning elections and running government) elect a GOP government based on bumper stickers and prayers that the other side will come off as worse.
If you read Hanson's piece, there is nothing complicated/boring about the ideas, other than they actually exist.
For all their weaknesses, Lefties out of power at least always have a clear laundry list of what they would do in power. It is consistent, if childlike, from election to election. There was very little consistent about the GOP in the Bush years. It was a Democrat Lite grab bag.
Just hopscotching from meme to meme, news cycle to news cycle, election to election...fuck that.
