Nobody Seems Interested in ObamaCare's High-Risk Insurance Pools
— Gabriel Malor

Remember how it was so damn important to do healthcare reform right freakin' now because thousands of hard-to-insure people couldn't get medical care? President Obama told dozens of stories about people who just couldn't get coverage from greedy insurance corporations. In fact, midnight votes and bought votes and non-stop demagoguery were all justified on the idea that ObamaCare would be necessary to save lives.

It seems that the Democrats had a solution in search of a problem:

States across the country are reporting lower than expected participation in the high-risk pools for people with pre-existing conditions, raising concerns that a lack of public engagement could affect the program's success — and that of health reform more generally.

[...]

Iowa, for example, had received only 32 applications by the middle of this week, even though state officials told the Des Moines Register that they were expecting many more because the pool's premiums are "much cheaper" than those in the state's long-standing pool.

[...]

Kansas Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger, a Republican who chairs the Health Insurance and Managed Care Committee at the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, offered a different take. She said the high cost of premiums and out-of-pocket costs was to blame for the slow movement in Kansas, where only 17 people had enrolled by Friday in a program that started taking applications in mid-August.

The Hill quotes a libtard professor who says that low participation is really because people are put off by the negative things the public are discovering about ObamaCare. No, really, she believes there are people out there who really want this type of coverage -- in fact, who may die without it -- but won't sign up because the press is mean to Obama.

1 Remember how it was so damn important to do healthcare reform right freakin' now because thousands of hard-to-insure people couldn't get medical care?

We all knew that was a lie. The reason he wanted it right now was because HillaryCare died as soon as the public found out what it was going to be.

That is why the rush and why the bill was a huge incomprehensible POS that nobody read.

So the libtard professor thinks that people would rather DIE in order to spite Obama, rather than sign up for healthcare?

The libtards really need to think these things through before they open up their mouths and show us their tonsils.

4 The other thing about "high risk" health insurance, the problem wasn't that you couldn't get it. The problem was that if you wanted it to pay for pre-existing conditions it was expensive as hell.

Now all the insurance will be expensive as hell.

Posted by: Vic at September 12, 2010 11:56 AM (/jbAw)

5 So the libtard professor thinks that people would rather DIE in order to spite Obama, rather than sign up for healthcare? Libtards really do believe that crap. But the truth is, people with preexisting conditions know they can go without insurance, and then just show up at an ER for critical care, then never pay the bill. That's better than paying insurance premiums.

Posted by: XBradTC at September 12, 2010 11:56 AM (X0Ona)

6 Doh.  People can't "sign up" if they don't have any money to pay the premiums.

And why should they anyway?  There are many hospitals all over the country that have a policy of not turning anyone away even if they can't pay, have no insurance, etc.

Ex. Jackson Memorial in Miami takes everyone who walks through the door.

Why would you pay for a policy when all you have to do is say you can't pay and choose a provider that will take you pro bono?

7 Ok, now I"m really freaked out.  Aaron klein on wabc radio has to be a moron.  He just said exactly what someone was saying the other day, was it ace or drew?   Hmmm.....he basically is saying on his show today....so the tea party is effective, so you get the seats, so you get to take over but then what?   Someone asked that question here last week, in the same way aaron is asking it...he is also pointing out that these people ahve been planning this for years and do we actually think they are going to go away that easy.

sheesh creeepy

8 I am under the impression that this new insurance stuff is free free free so what is stopping these people from signing up?

Posted by: curious at September 12, 2010 12:01 PM (p302b)

9 This is where the lie of "million of uninsured" comes from.  They do in fact have ample and cheap (i.e. free) access to critical care already.  Nobody in their right mind would pay for what they can get for free.

15 O/T:  this is how you know this country has changed.  There was a story about a montana family who were in seattle for chemotherapy for their child and their truck was stolen.  They have been inundated with cash and offers of a new car seat and offers of a rental car.  In the good times, one of the car companies would have stepped up and replaced the van with a brand new one....this isn't good that this wasn't done.

20 Just for grins, I went and checked the premiums for the Texas high risk pool. For my age, gender and location, the premium was $568 a month. That's with a 3k deductible. Don't know about you guys, but I don't find that particularly affordable. I'm sure that has nothing to do with the low participation problem, though.

I saw a town hall meeting with Coburn on C-Span this morning.   He says all they need in the Senate is 41 conservatives, real conservatives, and they can get through the things they need to change a lot of what has taken place over the last couple decades.   This November they need 4 more to make it 41.

Now, we definitely need to take the Senate majority, if we can, but if we have 41 strong, conservative Senators, we can stop & defund a lot of crap this administration and Congress has done.

Believe it.   We can hold their feet to the fire.   We must.

I hope they lose a lot of money as well as that seat.

Dr. Benishek is a surgeon so he can easily vivisect his Demotard opponent on the health care issue.

the other thing about the high risk pools that is the big dirty secret is that they allow abortions.  and guess what?  that is federal funding of abortions...

my congressman, Perriello (Dem, VA5) swore on a stack of Catholic Bibles that he would never, EVAH, vote for anything that allowed fed funding of abortions.

but then again, he went to Yale law school, & he is smarter than the rest of us in rural, Bible belt VA5....

Well, I haven't checked Hewitt since he charges for his podcasts...however, if you subscribe to the Ricochet podcast, he shows up there probably once every two weeks.  It's still worth a subscription, Lileks and Jonah Goldberg show up often.  Rob Long and Peter Robinson are the regulars and they get pretty good guests no matter what.

So we looked at the high risk deal. It was more expensive than COBRA. So, we got COBRA. Which means, if we don't find jobs soon, we'll reach the end of our financial tether sooner. We'll lose the house sooner. We'll move in with my 88 year old mother sooner. I'll blow my brains out sooner.

107 I think when you charge for anything on the internet, there are few takers.  Oh sure you get the bloggers who view it as "the cost of doing business" but "the folks" just assume they will be able to read it or hear it if it is of any import when someone links to it, otherwise no one cares.  I think even beck is giving stuff away for free now.  I love batchelor but i would not pay to hear the podcasts.

There are already over 3500 pgs of regulations from the bill.   That is not the actual bill, but regulations stemming from the bill.   It is expected that there will be well over 70,000 pgs before it is said and done.

What doctor, hospital, or insurance company will be able to get it all right?    Those regs are being written by Sebelius without any oversight what-so-ever.   She has already sent a letter to major insurance companies, who have raised their premiums due to the cost of some of the regs, that there will be consequences if they try to blame those increases on the bill.   She threatened them with not being able to receive any federal funding in the form of subsidies to cover the preexisting regs & the 26/yr old so-called kids funding.

So, essentially, what she is doing is puttting her boot on the neck of insurance companies for telling the truth about the damn bill and the reason for additional costs.    They will not be able to offer insurance under the regs she will implement and they will be out of business if they aren't allowed to raise their rates to cover the cost of the regs.

She is nothing more than an agent of a tyrannical goverment that spits on the constitution.

Ah, lawyers.  It's just a little thing, but I think emblematic of the whole problem we have in this country:

"I have read and agree to the terms and conditions."

For iTunes alone, the terms and conditions are over 70 pages of text.

And your point is?  What did you expect from Sebelius the baby killer?

Sebelius received $12,450 between 1994 and 2001 from physician George Tiller, one of only 3 providers nationwide, who performed Late Term abortions.

The Associated Press, however, reported that from 2000 to 2002 Tiller gave at least $23,000 more to a political action committee Sebelius established to raise money for Democrats while she was serving as state insurance commissioner.

Planned Parenthood and has raised money on her behalf.

Sebelius vetoed anti-abortion legislation in Kansas in 2003, 2005, 2006, and again in 2008.

125 The resaon is that Obamacare won't tell you what they cover. I have a serious kidney disease, my state pool (TX) offers to pay for the first transplant. In all my dealings with the new Obamacare, they won't even tell me what they cover. I mean they told me it would cover it but they wouldn't give it to me in writing. Trust us is all I got. They can't tell me what doctors I can go see or even how my deductable will be calculated. I havebeen on self pay for years, so I took a moderare deductable plan from my state pool and it only cost me about $150 more than the Obama/Pelosi version. In addition if you are already enrolled in your state pool you can't switch unless you drop coverage for 6 months, so I am hardly surpised enrollment is low. I'd be curious though about states like Cali with truly useless high risk plans. I was on that waiting list for 8 years and never got anywhere.

Posted by: Roy at September 12, 2010 02:59 PM (naXUl)

126 There are a number of problems with the ObamaPools©:

In New Jersey, only 2 (two!) people have even signed up.

In Pennsylvania and Ohio, being pregnant moves one to the head of the line.

Rates in some states are so high that, even with "subsidies" (that's thee and me paying the freight, BTW), rates are too high for many folks to bite.

In other states, rates are so low that you'd have to be a moron (present company excepted, of course) not to sign up.

And HHS Secretary Shecantbeserious (or, as my co-blogger calls her, Shebullshits) can whine all she wants: the Fed's don't set the rates, the states do.

Well, the states and hobos.
