— Ace At least that's what Representative Suzanne Kosmas of Florida seems to say.
The rising costs of our health care system put us on an unsustainable path that is hurting job growth, overwhelming the federal budget, and creating debt for future generations. The House bill does not do enough to slow the growth of health care costs or to rein in spending on care. That is why, after careful consideration I decided that I could not in good conscience support this bill.Fiscally responsible health care reform is attainable, but we must improve upon the House bill. This requires reform that continues to provide choice, does not change benefits to veterans and seniors, and truly rewards quality outcomes and moves us away from the fee-for-service system that rewards quantity alone. There must be real incentives to maintain healthy lifestyles and to provide health insurance plans that are more cost-effective. Finally, any legislation must also make a serious effort to control waste, fraud, and abuse.
Additionally, we should hold insurance companies accountable by preventing them from denying coverage based on preexisting conditions, by eliminating life-time caps on coverage, and by taking steps to lower premiums. However, in the long run, these reforms will be in vain if we don't take significant steps to rein in rising costs, and the House bill did not achieve this goal.
Not sure what sorts of fixes she has in mind. If the reconciliation fix actually reduced costs, that would take it further away from progressives' dreams, which is the opposite, I thought, of what reconciliation is being promised to do.
Suzanne Kosmas is one of the nine previous "no" votes Nancy Pelosi is asking to join her Suicide Squad. And it would be suicide, as her district went McCain by 2 and Bush by 10.
Oh: Note she is specifically addressing the House bill above, not the Senate bill, which is what she'd be voting on, if Pelosi calls the vote. I didn't make that clear.
Whatever "fixes" she'd have in mind in reconciliation would be the opposite of what the persuadable progressives would want.

And therein is one of the problems...the warring groups want different and mutually exclusive fixes.

I don't think they are having much luck getting yes votes and I doubt Pelsoi has or had any in reserve like we all thought. That was 4 long months ago. I think it's all from scratch now.

Since a fee for service system with catastrophic insurance coverage is the best answer I can see.
Posted by: Buzzsaw at March 08, 2010 10:47 AM (zBxXz)
So she basically puked out the Party line and added, "but I'm voting no".
I don't think it really matters anyway for her. If her district was red enough to go McCain there is no way she holds the seat with the public disgust with the Demoncrap Party right now.

Does anyone even know what that is?
Without knowing the numbers, I think its clear Pelosi doesn't have the votes to pass this or the Senate version would already be law.
The question is, how close is she?

The odds may be against her, but unless she's already decided NOT to run again, it would still be in her personal interest to vote "No" on this.

This I know.
Again, if she had the votes, this would be a done deal. Empirically she doesn't have them. . .RIGHT NOW.
My question revolves around how close she is. The House bill did pass last time.
So assuming NO vote defections, and assuming she can satisfy the Stupak abortion caucus (neither of which are safe assumptions), she might be fairly close.
Lets flip the question around. Apart from the Stupackers, how many House members who voted FOR the House bill are inclined to vote AGAINST the Senate version?

22 - One thing about senior citizens is that they have time on their hands. Oh, and they hang out together at the senior centers and commiserate on the topics of the day. Years ago up in Chicago, Dan Rostenkowski (Dem chair of the House Ways & Means Committee, Chicago US House 5th district) was literally chased down the street by an angry mob of seniors. It was a full cane & umbrella waving rout.
Eventually Rostenkowski went to jail for his deeds and his constituents elected a republican!!! Only for one term though. Then those esteemed citizens elected Rod Blagoyvetch as their congressman, and further beclowned themselves by electing Rahm Emmanuel.
I should check and see how the current congresscritter voted on healthcare destruction.

So Kosmas is a 'no' on this unpopular bill but in principle she is in favor of expending government control of medicine.

Just called my guy McGovern (D-MA 3) to tell him to vote no. Said I feared that the worst that will happen is not that they will lose their jobs, but something far worse than that. Made sure to say I wasn't making a threat or a prediction. But that we don't want it, and please don't vote for it.
They took down my name and address. That's positive, I think. Either that, or the secret service will be visiting soon.

The president is also imploring Americans to "Make your voice heard." Never has he given such sound advice.
The health-care debate has now come down to this: Can one man's desires prevail over those of 150,000,000 Americans (the difference between the roughly 225 million who oppose Obamacare and the roughly 75 million who support it)? Can one man — through coercion, threats, and payoffs — prove to be more persuasive to individual Democratic members of Congress than the collective voice of their constituents — expressed through calls, letters, rallies, and marches? Can one man convince Democratic members that their vote on Obamacare doesn't matter (and that they shouldn't care even if it did), or can their constituents convince them that it DOES matter (and that they better care)?
There are only five minutes left in the game. The legs are heavier, the arms wearier, the arc on the jump-shots flatter. And now it's just a question of will.
We face an opponent who is fiercely driven by thoughts of personal glory and ideological zeal to make every effort to consolidate and centralize power in Washington under his control. In defense of liberty and fiscal responsibility, we need to match every ounce of our opponent's perseverance. Let's leave it all out on the floor.
As Magic Johnson used to say before a game's final moments — during which its outcome would be decided — "It's winnin' time."

You know what is missing from all the stories out there? Confimred Yes that are staying yes. Othere than a few you can count on one hand, all the previous yes votes have remained mum. It's honest nancy, Reid and Obama that are confirming the yes votes, not the actua;l people doing the voting
Funny how the previous no votes and the congressmen that are switching to no have all publically stated their position themselves. How many of the previous 217 yes votes have publically stated they are staying yes? 5, 8? The rest pelosi has shut up and is saying what she wants to see. I would bet money there are alot of former yes votes going no but Pelosi, Reid and obama are mnot about to let that info. be publisized.
Alinsky rule: give the perception of success despite the reality. We saw them do this all through the campaign with phony support numbers. it's still going on

If they had the votes, they would not even be talking about it. Nothing but bluster. Pelosi, Reid and Obama can't put up or shut up. Who drones on and on about how they have the votes rather than actually voting right then and there? It's desperate people that know they don't have the votes but pray others will say " oh well, I don't want to be on the losing side of this. Why, I better switch my no vote to yes!". this is grammer school tactic and mentallity the 3 stooges are displaying
Posted by: Ex Dem at March 08, 2010 12:54 PM (0cUgO)
Spot on, Ex Dem.
If they had the votes, the talking would be over. Keep the pressure on, folks. Remember, a written letter has as much influence as several phone calls. Write the congresscritters in the swing districts that you will work hard to unseat in November anyone that supports the Senate bill.
