Nomentum! Strange Bedfellows Edition
— DrewM

Congressman Luis Guiterrez of Illinois isn't happy with the exclusion of illegal immigrants from ObamaCare, so he's going from Yes to No.

Gutierrez, a member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) in which he serves as chairman of its Immigration Task Force, said the caucus still has concerns over the extent to which the healthcare bill excludes illegal immigrants as well as legal residents from receiving benefits in the healthcare plan.

"They are enough to say I can't support this bill," Gutierrez said during an appearance on MSNBC.

We'll take no votes anyway we can get them.

OT, but good

Found an interesting bill in VA Assembly: House Bill # 18

CHAPTER 2.4.

VIRGINIA GOODS AND SERVICES RETAINED IN-STATE.

§ 59.1-21.29. Certain Virginia goods and services not subject to commerce clause.

All goods, as defined in § 59.1-198, manufactured or made in Virginia and all services, as defined in § 59.1-198, performed in Virginia, when such goods or services are held, maintained, or retained in Virginia, shall not be subject to the authority of the Congress of the United States under its constitutional power to regulate commerce. [ Provided that this section shall not relate to (i) any goods or services ordered, procured, or purchased by the United States Government or (ii) ordered, procured, or purchased by any contractor pursuant to any agreement with the United States Government. ]

I found this over at the VA 10th Amendment Center

According to the status of the bill, it passed the House, and is in a Senate Committee (chaired by a D). So it may or may not have any further legs

A. The bill has little or no chance.
B. They benefit politically from aiding in it's demise.

I think the Founders were geniuses. Giving people that kind of liberty ensured that there would be so much controversy over important issues that sometimes nothing would get done, which in the long run is better for the cause of said liberty.

We have a Republican party that shoots itself in the foot when it gets a majority, and a Democrat party that shoots itself in the foot when it gets a majority.

Winners: The American people.

I have been saying all along that i think this would pass, i am even more certain now. I haven't seen, in my short life, a president, congress and party commit so much political capital to something that wasn't a war effort.

Look at Bush, when he saw that he couldn't reform Social Security, he gave up. When he saw he couldn't get Comprehensive Immigrations reform through, he gave up.

Honestly when was the last time you saw a party, president and congress invest so much effort, energy, and credibility and fail?

They've invested to much to let this one go down. This will be passed by hook or by crook.

His goal is to permanently marginalize white males because he believe, with cause, that racial and gender separateness will create a Democratic majority forever. The goal is to redistribute wealth and create a Northern Latin country. It is openly discussed with approval on every college campus.

33 Perhaps if Mr. Gutierrez and members of the Hispanic Caucus want to retain any credibility they should explain why we should not follow the 'enlightened', 'progressive' and 'socialist' model for the treatment of immigrants contained in the Mexican Constitution. Not only would illegals be barred from receiving health care benefits under its provisions, but naturalized Mexicans, and permanent resident Mexicans are banned from all elective offices, from all judgeships, and from all public policy positions, in addition to being barred from owning any real property in Mexico.
If he and his Hispanic Caucus feel that the Southwest is part of Mexican Aztlan, they why should we not administer it in accordance with the rules laid down in Mexico ninety years ago?

Posted by: eaglewingz08 at March 12, 2010 07:49 AM (dv8zz)

34 From Roll Call:

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) used a Thursday meeting with President Barack Obama on immigration reform to warn him that the issue “could come to a halt for the year” if Democrats use reconciliation to pass health care reform.

Graham, along with Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), met with Obama to update him on their efforts to advance immigration reform legislation. During the meeting, Graham said he made it clear to the president that the already difficult task of passing immigration reform becomes even harder when reconciliation is in play.

46 In many ways 'twill be Blair's Law that saves us if we get through this. The Hispanic lobby, hard left, porkmeisters etc. genuinely don't feel that this is a good bill (bills?). They want the wins that motivate their respective bases. However, if enacted they don't want to be left out and want their pet cause recognized. And if it's not enacted they go on record as fighting for their pet cause.

The incentive structure just isn't there but for about 20% of Americans. Which, interestingly, is right about where it's headed in polling. Success breed success, failure breeds failure, and the more this thing looks like a loser the more squishy/halfway reasonable people will turn.

They might get it through procedurally, eventually. But by that point ObamaCare will be radioactive and Obama will be too. He still wins though.

The kabuki-fu is so thick it's getting impossible to see through the greasepaint.  Guittierz is from a gerrymandered safe hispanic seat in Chicago.  He's friends with Prez Zero going way back, there are various Rezko and other connections, all the Chgo dems are corrupt and connected to each other.

There has to be some reason why suddenly all these yes votes are flipping to no.  What that is, I can't tell.  The current Senate bill has to be passed as it currently stands, and signed into law, before any "changes" could be made to it, and if the dems in the house think the dems in the senate will change their bill once it's law, then the dems in the house are truly the dumbest people in DC.  And that's dumb.

51 Including illegals is an open invitation to massive insurance fraud.

If I were a doctor of lesser ethical inclination, I'd simply fabricate dozens of phony illegals, making sure they all had a "medical history" with LOTS of preexisting ailments needing expensive weekly/monthly "treatment", then start whacking the insurance companies like crazy.

Whatever you'd have to front in premiums could easily be gotten back within a month.

Since the patient after all is illegal, addresses can be phony (or done in collusion with a flop house somewhere).

You could even make a lot of money fronting the premiums for actual illegals in case a situation arose where some agency demanded presentation of a physical body for some sort of verification.

The CHC are fools if they think real illegals will sign up for something that's going to cost them money when they can get health care for free today.  That will NEVER HAPPEN.  These people avoid paperwork and anything that smacks of "official" like the plague.  They don't use banks, everything is cash or convenience store money orders.  They don't have phones; they use prepaid phone cards or throwaway TracPhones.

I would bet money that well over 80% of any "illegals" signed up by insurance companies would be completely fake.

Just a little background here from the Chicago Sun-Times:

Rep. Gutierrez bought a town house from Antoin 'Tony' Rezko's firm and paid far less than his neighbors did, but the congressman says he got no special treatment...

Gutierrez paid $434,900 three years ago for the town house along the Chicago River just north of Diversey. That's far less than his neighbors paid for any of the other riverfront town houses in the development, records show.

Gutierrez no longer lives there. In March, he sold the town house for $610,000 -- a 40 percent profit....

Gutierrez said he's been friends for 20 years with Rezko, whose family has donated more than $19,000 to the congressman's campaign funds over the years.

I agree, at the end of the day this will pass. Repealing this over the Presidents veto will take 67 votes in the Senate, it will never happen. The left, with one bill, turns us into a Eurosocialist nation, which has been their wet dream since Wilson. They will win back the majority over the next decade by saying all the problems with health care are because the government doesn't spend enough on it.  Unlike the hapless fools in the GOP, the left can think long term.
