— Gabriel Malor Michelle's got it:
Democrat Chief Inquisitor Henry Waxman has retreated from his attempt to intimidate companies who dare speak out about the costs and consequences of Obamacare. His April 21 witch hunt session has been cancelled, according to left-wingers. (Update: Fox also reporting same.)
Someone must have told him that publicly-traded businesses are required to publicize when they take a charge against earnings. With ObamaCare trending ever more unpopular, he must have realized that chastising CEOs for complying with the law would only make Democrats look more out of step with America.

It might have occurred to him that more than one CEO might have the stones to answer his idiotic questions by saying "because the goddamn law requires us to disclose material adverse changes you fuckin moron".
That is my theory. I'll bet the preliminary communications from the subject companies were along the lines of: "Fill your hands, you son of a bitch!!!!"
Posted by: Circa (Insert Year Here) at April 14, 2010 09:57 AM (B+qrE)
Well they really needed sedation and straight-jackets before hearing this, so not sure how much "change" there is there, but we can always "hope" I guess.

Here's what Waxman's going to do with his freetime.
Waxman Calls for Baseball Ban on Chewing Tobacco Use
"We don’t let baseball players go stand out in the field and drink beer,” Waxman said during the hearing before the health subcommittee. “The MLB Association won’t let them stand out there and smoke cigarettes,” and chewing tobacco should also disappear from games, he said at the hearing today.

Just got back from the Tea Party rally at Boston Common.
Pretty good. Saw Sarah Palin from afar, but it was great. The rest of the speakers were good. The best speaker? Victoria Jackson. She was awesome. Very real, very sincere. Victoria was on the stage in the back for hours as sort of cheerleader.
There were several protesters. Small groups of 2-4. Hateful and angry. Pretending to mock us, but they were seething. Bunch of young queers. None of them got out of control, that I saw/heard.
A lotta good signs. A few moonbats did indeed show dressed for a 'tea party.' It was so silly; I was embarrassed for them. There was a couple dressed in a tux and a crappy evening dress ranting about being billionaires, complaining about taxes. Again, silly. Ridiculous.

The best part of the day happened before I even got to the rally.
I took the bus/train into town. Hadn't been on a bus in decades. So I get on the bus and asked the driver if they still took cash. Then I asked how to get to Boston Common. The driver said, "Where you going, to that rally?"
I said yep and he said, "I wish I was going."
Why any Republican would run from this movement is simply inexplicable, to paraphrase Robert Palmer.

I caught some of this Leftist "street theater" a few years back when I was in San Francisco visiting a friend. It was some antiwar protest or other (I lose track). Never mind that the impetus behind the protest was sophomoric and meretricious; the event itself was just a big fat FAIL. (And I do mean fat. Whatever happened to the skinny hippie?) It was on the level of an impromptu third-grade play.
A few past-their-prime earth-mommas were tyring to get a chant going, but they kept changing the words, so no one could get a rhythm going. The guys -- mostly sixties-reject grandpops as far as I could see -- were mosly letting the women do the yelling. There was no sense of real outrage or purpose or zeal; it was mainly just a bunch of middle-aged underemployed idjits wasting a perfectly nice summer afternoon yelling to groups of people who were doing their best to ignore them. (And there wasn't much of a crowd, protestors or onlookers either one. I think the total hippie bolus came to less than a hundred people -- and this is in SF on a nice August afternoon.)

THE ISLAND OF DR. PELOSI
[Henry 'Snout' Waxman cowers in front of the imperious Dr. Pelosi, his voluminous nostrils aquiver.]
Dr. Pelosi: "What is the law?"
Snout: "Do not walk upon all fours!"
Dr. Pelosi: "What is the law?"
Snout: "Do not root for tasty, tasty truffles!"
Dr. Pelosi: "What is the law?"
Snout: "Do not expel intestinal gas while in the committee chambers!"
Dr. Pelosi: "What is the law?"
Snout: "Do not embarass Dr. Pelosi!"
Dr. Pelosi: "Which of these laws have you broken, Snout?"
Snout: "I have embarassed Dr. Pelosi. Bad! Bad Snout!" (SNOUT strikes himself on the forehead with a fist.)
Dr. Pelosi: "What is the punishment for breaking The Law?"
Snout: "I must emery-board Dr. Pelosi's toe-calluses! I must prostrate myself before the White House Press Corps and take all the blame! I must make sure that no blame or blowback reaches the sublime person of Dr. Pelosi! I must do these things! It is the human way!"

@52 alex, righto. Were I a corporate exec, I'd be saying, "But no, I insist! Let's have those hearings. C'mon, let's have them on C-Span."
Wouldn't it be sumpin' if citizens had the same kind of subpoena powers those committees do, and could jerk the politicos in for a few words under the hot lights? That'd be some good clean fun right there. Put them "on the stump."
Now, were I a conniving proto-Marxist, I'd just have some appointed and heretofore-unheard-of financial audit committee come up with a report saying that the loss charges were excessive, and release that report to the pet broadcasters without comment. And that is what I expect the administration to do.
