— Open Blogger Let's preface this by reminding everyone (as if they needed a reminder here) that they need to get out and kick serious ass in the voting booth on Tuesday.
All of this is moot if we don't get out and utterly crush the Left on Tuesday.
That said, starting Thursday after the election, Senator Bob Corker (R-TN) is throwing a bunch of town hall meetings around Tennessee. The schedule and some thoughts are below the fold...
The schedule will follow this- just a couple of quick thoughts...
Corker didn't push conservatism as hard as I might prefer to this point, although he got in in 2006 with the Democrat takeover. In any event, it'll be rather important to emphasize to the GOP (in whatever strength they have) going forward to stay true to what they've paid lip service- fiscal conservatism, most importantly.
It's going to be important to maintain the enthusiasm of the past eighteen months over the next two years. It would be quite a surprise to have Obama tack to the center (and rather unlikely, to be sure), but to give the GOP any wiggle room would be a big mistake.
As such, I want to urge our Tennessee Morons (as a former TN Moron) to go to whatever one of these is convenient to you, and politely and respectfully hold his feet to the fire.
When I was at the CBS affiliate in Nashville, Corker's people were good to me and receptive, and I suspect the same will apply today. Go let the man know what you think, get on his mailing list, and stay on him!
In the meantime, folks, let's get out and vote, and enjoy the fruits of our labors when we do. Tuesday, we hoist the black flag and start slitting throats.
Here's that schedule...
"Our national debt is at a record $13.5 trillion and rising every day. In six town hall meetings across Tennessee, Senator Bob Corker will deliver a sobering slide presentation on Washington's spending trends and mounting debt levels and then respond to questions from the audience. To view Senator Corker's presentation on America's debt crisis and to access a PDF copy, please visit: http://corker.senate.gov/public/?p=america-s-debt-crisis."
Details for each town hall meeting are listed below. Thanks so much."

It was about time to holster the previous thread and get to the serious business.
It is not enough to win some elections, we need to govern responsibly.

Why am I still seeing ads from the DCCC for the Frank Kravitol race? I thought that one was out of reach.

Just got back from the polling place at Northwest Church. Wait time was about two hours when I left. Don't forget that the early voting locations close at 5 PM, not 8 PM, but at this rate there may still be people voting then.

From what I understand, the DCCC is pumping tons of money into that race. Maybe they're just trying to finish strong.

Don't be concerned. The 3rd parties always drop away the closer you get to election day. Plus if 3rd parties are at the top of the ballot, the down ballot effect they have will sweep a lot of GOP candidates into office. It happened in 92 when Perot ran. The GOP actually picked up seats in the House. In 96 when Clinton was re-elected, the GOP only lost 4 seats, which means although Clinton won with 49% of the vote, the Perot voters probably voted for the R congressman.

Reality check. When was the last time a GOP senate
ever did anything right? What left wing nominee have they ever
filibustered? What tax have they ever
stood against? When have they ever
stopped spending? Remember, the contract
with America? Remember how it was deep sixed by the GOP senate? Remember the last time? Remember how they promised and promised to
stop the madness and then put Ted Stevens in charge?
You watch, every leadership post will be filled by a pork barreling, ear marking, double talking, pontificating, smoke blowing, aisle crossing, back scratching, quid pro quo ing, bribe taking, leather chair sitting, whiskey sipping, country clubbing, junket riding, USDA choice grade A old bull R I N O.
And every single one of these old bull rinos will think itÂ’s just their turn to loot the treasury.
The holy rino empire is fat, dumb, and happy with the way things
are. They like being the "loyal" opposition. That
way they can cruise under the radar while they take bribes and earmark their
way to a long and prosperous life.
Notice that no matter how many seats the Rs actually have in either chamber,
the Dooms always allow them all the earmarks they want. Why is that
do you think? Because if the rinos have their earmarks, then they won't
fuss. They will look the other way while the Doomcrats turn America into
a 3rd world joke.
Look at Murkookski. She is bragging that her status as a ranking member
of the minority allows her to bring home the
pork. That's her entire campaign. Yeah, I know,
its Murkooksi. But, they all do it. There is not one rino up
for election who isn't singing the same song.
We've been here before. The Republican Party came about because the Whigs
would not stand up to the "slave power." Now the
Republicans won't stand up to the "government power." It is
long past time for history to start repeating itself.
“… Already long ago, from when we sold our vote to no man, the People have abdicated our duties; for the People who once upon a time handed out military command, high civil office, legions - everything, now restrains itself and anxiously hopes for just two things: bread and circuses.” (Decimus Iunius Iuvenalis, describing the end of the Roman republic in Satire X, A.D. 200)
Posted by: VADM (Red) Cuthbert Collingwood (RN) at October 31, 2010 02:28 AM (UL/HQ)
Typically, you get around 40% turnout in a midterm. This assumes that one party is more excited than the other. What one party gains, the other loses, so the totals remain about the same.
I am guessing this will be true this year as well (despite the hype). The GOOD news for Republicans is, that even the far left pollster, Gallup, predicts a 15 point win for Republicans if this ends up being the turnout model. 15 points in the generic spells BLOOOOWOUT, I am sticking with my prediction from 6 months ago of 75 seats.
Remember that the people you see at rallies such as Becks and TDS's are pretty much activists on the fringe. Most people are just regular folks living their lives and going to vote. If you did a poll on the street, I am pretty sure 80% of those asked wouldn't even know who was running for Congress in their district, but they would know who "The Situation" is.

The subject of his opinion piece -- ranked choice voting. I'll let him explain it to you:
Debated vigorously when Ross Perot earned 19 percent of the presidential vote in 1992 and Ralph Nader tipped Florida away from Al Gore in 2000, split votes have become a regular feature of our elections. It wouldn't surprise me if a dozen races for governor and U.S. Senate were won with less than 50 percent of the vote.
Ranked-choice voting handles voter choice with a sensible change. After indicating your first choice, you have the option to rank alternate choices.
If no candidate wins a 50 percent plus one majority, then those rankings are used to simulate an instant runoff: the weak candidates are eliminated, and their backers' votes are added to the totals of the frontrunners. The candidate who wins a majority in the final instant runoff is the winner.
[ . . . ]
Having more competition forces candidates to clean up negative campaigning and stick to the issues. Knowing they may need support from supporters of other candidates to win, candidates have to tone down personal attacks.
Reaching out to more voters also helps them govern better when they win.
The fundamental issue is majority rule. Without a majority standard, you can't hold power accountable. It's a blight on democracy when an incumbent can be returned to office even though 60 percent of voters reject that candidate as their last choice. That's why both Sen. John McCain and President Barack Obama have actively backed ranked-choice voting. No party has a lock on majority rule, and both major parties can stand up for it.
--------------------------
Still crazy after all these years. So here's another crazy scheme you can look forward to the Democrats jamming up your ass.

The Tea Party is obsessed with myths about America's past. The Founding Fathers are revered as gods, the constitution is sacrosanct, America was uniquely established to be the land of the free. This reverence for the late 18th century might explain why some of its members like to dress up in colonial garb, trying to look like Mr and Mrs George Washington. In Colorado, they even go in for pioneer re-enactments, where the women and children are in period dress, the men spend the weekend dressed as Davy Crockett wandering around with muskets and everybody lives in tents (but with portable lavatories nearby).
I went to one such camp near the ski resort of Crested Butte, where I came across Bob McConnell, a veteran action man who'd served in Vietnam and climbed Everest. Another political virgin, he was running for the Republican nomination for his local congressional district.
"Breathe that air in," he instructs me as we walk towards the re-enactment camp. "That's America. That's freedom." Washington did seem another country. But Bob says it's everywhere, controlling Colorado's land, farming, minerals, even the air they breathe. He will fight to get the federal government off the state's back, he says, if he gets to Washington.

Followed up, of course, by a bunch of snobbish comments by the eurotrash. It's fun to make left wing heads explode worldwide.

Tea Party purists lose sight of art of compromise
It is important to emphasize that although they might share the same goals, not all Tea Partiers are rigid purists. It is more accurate to say that while not all Tea Party supporters are purists, all purists are Tea Party supporters. And make no mistake: Unlike the Goldwater convention delegates, the Tea Party candidates care about winning. With 30 percent of Americans identifying themselves as Tea Party supporters, according to a recent Gallup poll, the Tea Party is campaigning hard this year to elect "true" conservatives who believe in small government, lower taxes, individual initiative and traditional family values (and who oppose having a "socialist" in the White House). Supporters know they might not always win, but they consider a few setbacks a small price to pay for the unwavering commitment to principle over popularity and - when the cause is deemed morally right and just - to anyone who has a conscience and acts on it.
It is difficult to be an enemy of conscience. It is also foolish. Nonetheless, serious dilemmas and problems arise when individual conscience is elevated to an absolute, transformed into an uncompromisable principle, and then is regarded as the only valid guide to political action. Here we begin to see what separates the Tea Party purists from the professional politicians.
[ . . . ]Traditional politicians generally look at the world of politics differently. Unlike the purists, they do not identify compromise with moral degeneracy. They believe in accommodation. They know from experience that working with the opposition broadens public appeal and support. Despite the popular fashion to decry our politicians and political parties, they function as a major channel through which important policy decisions are ultimately made. Without their role as brokers who can both compromise and integrate conflicting interests and demands, a bargaining society such as ours would break up into separate warring parts (as happened once in our history). But the politicians have played their most vital role in achieving agreement on "the rules of the game" by which all contestants accept each other as legitimate, thus making for a less ideological and intransigent politics.
-----------
The lesson? If the Tea Party succeeds there will be another Civil War, and we don't want that, right?
Assholes

I used to get hit by that fake hard drive scan worm regularly. The last time I got hit by it was actually here through one of the ads that used adobe flash player as the vehicle of entry. I couldn't get the thing killed fast enough and it wiped my hard drive.
Sine then I have gone to Fire Fox with add-ons for "no script" and "ad-block". In addition, I have NOT loaded adobe flash player on FF. If I want to view a specific video I fire up IE8 which has it loaded, but I am careful as to which videos I load.
Since I went to that I haven't had a single hit by any virus threats, including Hot Air.

To every new
Congressman and Senator we say to you: "If you think for one moment
we have sent you to Washington
merely to pick up where your predecessor(s) left off, then sir/madam, you are utterly
delusional. We The People are your bosses, not vice-versa. If you fail to heed
our collective voices we will find a substitute for you. And we are prepared to
keep repeating this process until we arrive at the person who understands the
limitations we are putting upon your powers."
In a somewhat more personal vein, I happen to be a naturalized American - a
transplanted Brit. There honestly has not been a day in my life where, if even
for just a fleeting moment, I have not expressed a private prayer of gratitude
for my family's being welcomed into the greatest and most exceptional country
that has ever existed - and that includes the year I spent in combat in Vietnam.
I am 65 years of age, and unfortunately my wife and I have never been able to
have children. Consequently, I do not have the same "stake in the
future" as those of you who are parents. Nevertheless, I have been absolutely enraged over the past two
years to see our government use its credit card to incur $3 trillion in additional
debt with no discernible results, and most outrageously
of all, with no present intent to repay that debt. Instead, the obligation for
repayment of that crushing burden has been "kicked down the road" to
generations yet unborn. And the 'rationale' involved? "Well, our children
are just going to have to accept the fact they will not be able to have the
same life-style we have purchased for ourselves."
Not quite the American
Dream is it? Not quite the dream that spurs people from all over the world to
leave everything behind and make their way to America - so their children will
have an opportunity to prosper beyond anything their parents could have
realistically hoped for themselves.
Let's hope Tuesday next is as great a beginning as we suspect it's going to be.

For those concerned that Republican establishment efforts to hold onto power may bear fruit eventually--
The heart of that establishment resides in the Senate. Getting Federalism back via a return of Senate nominations or elections by state legislatures (with perhaps ratification of the choice by the people in the general election as a way to allow the people a check on their state folks) will perhaps drive a stake in that heart.
