Obama: A Love Story
— Ace

From JEM in the comments.

So let's establish a long-winded metaphor here. You're a girl, let's say your name is America, and you were in a long-term relationship with a guy - let's call him W - who started off okay, even caught a purse-snatcher and beat the snot out of him.

Then he started going off the rails a little, he let go of the purse-snatcher to chase a guy that he thought might mug him. He went out to drink with Ted Kennedy a couple too many times. Just generally got kind of irritating, stopped listening to you, and you realized that you were really annoyed by his big ears. When he put your money in a bank that was going broke you got really mad.

So next time you decided to have a fling with a guy who was as unlike the last guy as possible. Entirely reasonable.

Except that six weeks into the new relationship you realized he'd named his genital wart and liked to talk to it. He spoke authoritatively about everything, but couldn't actually do anything without calling all the buddies he'd known at Harvard. He'd spent weeks telling you about how different he was than the last guy, but then you noticed he went to all the same restaurants as W. He had a lot of brilliant friends but every time you were near them they were trying to pick your pocket. And then he started lecturing you about all your bad habits.

By now you're thinking homosexuality might be a really good idea.

Other articles: Obama's Summer of No Love from Politico, and Jay Cost on What Went Wrong With Obama, which I'm gonna subtitle myself The God Who Failed.

Or: It's the Geography, Stupid.

Here's Cost:

Was there an alternative approach the President could have taken? I think so. Such a tactic would have acknowledged the sizeable McCain bloc. McCain won 22 states, making his coalition a politically potent minority. Obama should have governed in light of this. I don't mean in hock to it. He didn't have to make Sarah Palin his domestic policy advisor, but he should have ignored the hagiographers who were quick to declare him the next FDR. These flatterers always manifest themselves anytime a new Democrat comes to the White House, and they are of very little help for Democratic Presidents who actually want to be great.

What he should have done instead was disarm his opponents. If he had built initial policy proposals from the middle, he could have wooed the moderate flank of the Republican party, marginalized the conservatives, and alleviated the concerns of those gettable voters in the South and the Midwest. This is precisely what Bill Clinton did between 1995 and 2000, and it is what the President's promises of "post-partisanship" suggested.

Our system of government can only produce policy when geographically broad coalitions favor it. The Senate, more than any other institution, forces such breadth. Obama created breadth the wrong way. He watered down initially liberal legislation to prompt just enough moderate Democrats to sign on. Instead, he should have built policy from the center, then worked to pick up enough votes on either side. The left would have been disappointed, but the right would have been marginalized and, most importantly, Independent voters - who have abandoned the President in droves - might still be on board.

A revolutionary idea in our polarized political climate, I know. Still: ask your average swing voter what he or she thinks of such an approach, and watch them nod in agreement.

23 Ending the war in Iraq was ObamaÂ’s central campaign promise two years ago, so the announcement should have been a huge deal. But by mid-Monday, the story drooped like a limp flag on news websites, sliding below obituaries of bandleader Mitch Miller.

Typically the Obama cheerleader site neglect the real story. The war was essentially over AND won before Obama took office.  The date for exiting the country was actually negotiated by the Bush adm.

39  That is pretty much a unanimous given that need not be said anymore.

He can't do what he "should have done" -- he believed/still believes his own press too much.  Even an ideological extremist will soften their rhetoric and actions if they see it's running counter to their wishes (Slick was an example of this -- he's fairly radical, but has more political sense).

Fortunately or not, this one seems psychologically incapable of such an act -- it remains to be seen what will happen as the pressure increases.

56 Jay Cost and his type don't understand that The Precedent never cared about actually passing any legislation, he just wanted to harm America by making the fight over it as vicious and destructive as possible.  That's why he always picks the side that America hates and tries to stuff it in America's face.

People keep asking, over and over and over, "but why did he do it this way, since it just inflamed people, ..." without realizing that that reaction was the actual goal, not the policy.  The Precedent didn't care two shits about health scare passing, which is why his "vision" of health scare changed daily and why he let Congress run hog wild on it.  He just wanted to fight it through Congress as much as he could, destroying the processes and that institution. That was his main intention.  And he succeeded in that.  And he managed to get the useful idiot junta to vote for something that 70%+ of Missourians just rejected, half a year later.

The Precedent is trying to cause problems in America with his attack on Arizona and his alliance with foreign enemies in that context, like Mexico, and encouraging states to attack each other (as the federal government has not done one of their basic jobs in assuring that one state isn't boycotting another state, as we have the "Full Faith and Credit" clause to explain how states should be treating each other, especially with respect to state laws that have no effect on their state).

None of this is happenstance or coincidental.  The Precedent's effects are destructive because they are supposed to be.  Someday, the slow folks like Cost (and Krauthammer) will realize this obvious fact.

Posted by: progressoverpeace at August 04, 2010 11:34 AM (Qp4DT)

57 Clinton at least had a little sense for political viability, he ended up embracing the right leaning agenda of the Congress in 94 and got a lot more done then he would have with the same Democrats who were previously in control (Clinton did not move to the center, he moved to the right, despite what the media would say). I don't see this happening with Obama. With the major Republican victory this year Obama will just clamp down and refuse any moderation in his agenda. He is a life long far lefty, he has never had to compromise, he has spent his life being told how great he is, he probably doesn't even know how to compromise.

Posted by: Drew in MO at August 04, 2010 11:35 AM (wWNlC)

58 The Cost excerpt is good, except it ignores one big consideration:  Obama's ego.  Even Bill Clinton's ego is nothing compared to Obama, and Clinton wanted to be loved more than anything.  Obama is utterly incapable of admitting he was ever wrong about anything.  His plan, proposed from day one, is the only plan he will ever support and push for.  "Compromise" is not in his vocabulary.

62 What Bush did was govern as an American president. Obama can't do that because that would defeat his purpose. 70 IMO, Cost makes the same mistake Goldberg, Ed "Pillsbury Doughboy" Morrissey and the rest of the pundit class make: he sees Osama Obama as just another political wonk (wanker?) like himself, for whom process and "the game" are as important as the result.

If something doesn't work, it's because the pol sold it the wrong way, and should go back to do some additional polling and blog-reading before trying again.

Instead, the Traitor-in-Chief is totally agenda-driven. He is driven by his hatred for America, and his overwhelming thirst for revenge against the country that gave him far more than he earned and granted him special privileges he does not deserve.

He, like the late, not-at-all-great Chairman Mao, is one fucked-up individual, motivated by the forces held within a twisted mind.

Until someone among the chattering (typing?) class wises up and looks directly at the disease and not the discomfort it causes, we will continue in the downward spiral that will, when it hits bottom, leave the Costs, Goldbergs, Morrisseys, et. al. wondering why things went to shit and whimpering to their bloggy-buddies.

72 Our system of government can only produce policy when geographically broad coalitions favor it.

This is why they are trying to concentrate power in the executive and judiciary.  Let's increase the size of government agencies and give them more discretion to interpret law by writing long, vague laws that can mean anything some bureaucrat wants them to mean, and pack the courts to let the interpretations stand.  Like someone in an earlier thread mentioned, they'd just go to a feudal system if they could, but until then this will have to do.

None of this is happenstance or coincidental. The Precedent's effects are destructive because they are supposed to be. Exactly. Does it often seem that he has no grand plan, no master strategy, no programmatic approach to transforming the relation of government to the people? That is because he has only one goal: To make government as intrusive and inextricable a part of every human life as possible. Not a question of efficiency, planning, outcome, prosperity, or costs and benefits. It's control. All that matters is to squash liberty and get people used to the idea that you must live under a mountain of laws and regulations and restrictions. So we can control the people, as the doddering Senator said about Hellcare (name escapes me). Never forget: The leftist vision of humanity's future is an ant colony.

78 #58  None of this is happenstance or coincidental.  The Precedent's effects are destructive because they are supposed to be.  Someday, the slow folks like Cost (and Krauthammer) will realize this obvious fact.

They'll realize it only when their happy homes collapse into ashes.

In their partial, pitiful defense, they've never had to analyze a President with the complete Third World revenge mentality.

What loads of horse shit. They still don't get it, do they?

Obama is phoney raised by muslims and communists and befriended by radicals, revolutionaries and murderers to provide reparations through redistribution.

He was never going to "govern". He was pushed to the top to create radical "change" with a black face so that he could label all opponents racists.

These fools still think he's just any other american libtard.

92 -->Exactly. Does it often seem that he has no grand plan, no master strategy, no programmatic approach to transforming the relation of government to the people? That is because he has only one goal: To make government as intrusive and inextricable a part of every human life as possible.

It's funny, in a morbid way, that The Precedent even stated pretty much this, himself, during his asinine oil spill speech:

"... our determination to fight for the America we want for our children. Even if weÂ’re unsure exactly what that looks like. Even if we donÂ’t yet know precisely how weÂ’re going to get there. We know weÂ’ll get there."

LOL ... though scary.

Clinton was actually SMART.  Not just politically smart, but intellectually brilliant - a guy who could actually consider multiple ideas at the same time and could work with opponents to advance the country's interests (see NAFTA, Welfare Reform, and cutting the Capital Gains rate in 1997).

Philosophically, I probably disagree with Clinton on 80% of the issues, but I can't argue with his style of governance.

Obama is a emotional and intellectual retard.  Any human being who gets to age 49 and still believes the warmed-over Marxist nonsense preached by his college professors is an infant.

100 "But, but, but.. look at all Obummer has accomplished in just 18 short months!"

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.. excuse me for a sec.. Ahahahahahahahahahahahaha.. ok..

His presidency is one big clusterfuck.  He has managed to piss off not only the people who didn't (and never would) vote for him, but nearly everyone who did as well!

His three big accomplishments please no one.

Stimulus - Even the leftards are starting to see we ain't been exactly stimulated.. (Think of whacking off to a pic of Helen Thomas here..)  The economy is tanking worse than ever and jobs outlook is even worse.

Health Care reform..  no public option for his progressive base..  pisses off seniors by raiding Medicare.. pisses off his young supporters who will now be paying twice as much for something they didn't buy previously anyway because they didn't think they needed it.  Score another big one for Barry!

Financial Reform.  No one can 'splain to me what the fuck they reformed, much less what it means to me.  Several thousand pages and they still have to appoint someone to actually write the regs! What The Fuck?  The progressive base is pissed off because the corporatist Geithner is running the show.  Wooohooo! Another score for the Barrymeister..

So, us Conservatives never expected much from him, so we can't really be disappointed.. but the lefties heads are exploding like popcorn..

Don't Ask Don't Tell - libtards were yelling at him in a town hall yesterday.. that's one of his meeting where everyone is screened really carefully!

Repealing Bush Tax Cuts - Barry will blame Congress for this when they aren't allow to sunset..

all kinds of shit.. it's more fun reading the lefty blogs these days listening to them fight with each other about who's to blame for the dilemma they're in (that is the ones who are not in denial).  It's like Christmas in August!

Yes, they are fools who don't see the problem that American libtards for the most part think that everything Obama wants is a good thing. They are with him, and blame every problem in life on racists, i.e. Republicans, i.e. Tea Party. Con artist opportunists of all social classes have migrated toward Marxism in hopes that they'll get more and climb higher on the global socialist pyramid. There are no starving masses in America. The audacious hope to be the new haves by taking from workers; not so much to take the place laboring in the work force. Rather, simply cut to the chase. Stay on welfare and take the goods from services they never rendered, and refuse to render by taking an available job. It happened throughout Europe, Asia, Latin America and Canada, the Middle East and Africa.

It has been happening in America since FDR/LBJ in order for Obama to have already gotten away with treason, uncontested. Where to date is the impeachment process begun in Congress? Republicans in Congress, rather than confronting Obama, throw up their hands while unconstitutional laws are signed. They give lip service to upholding the Constitution and LEGITIMATE Congressional legislative procedure and rules of protocol by members while Obamarx's revisionist-truth goes marching on.

104 Clinton didn't hate the U.S. He wasn't embarassed by it and had some sense of history. I didn't like him. In fact, I remember hating him or so I thought.

The major difference between Clinton and Barry, is that Clinton is an egotist, whereas Barry is a narcissist. Clinton was out for Clinton. He wanted power and prestige (and, no doubt, the money and babes that would come along with it). He was willing to do whatever it took to get that, even if it was at odds with his ideology.

Barry, on the other hand, cannot conceive of his ideology as being wrong, or of himself not being the one to bring it's transformative power to America. Yes, he craves power, but not because he wants it - because he feels it's his rightful place to be at the top of the pyramid. Any other outcome wouldn't make sense to him.

Shows that a single Arkansas Democrat mother did a better job raising a boy who became potus than "the typical white" multicultural Marxist grandparents did. At least the Clintons were of age when they chose to support the SDS ideology; whereas Barry got it along with Mohamed from the cradle.

110 Clinton's taxes on laborers were so high, we had to borrow a third of our family income to pay the IRS.

Clinton's mass murders outside of Waco, TX and Bosnia sealed his fate in hell, the only band that will let him play sax.

Posted by: maverick muse at August 04, 2010 12:28 PM (H+LJc)

111 Clinton at least had a little sense for political viability, he ended up embracing the right leaning agenda of the Congress in 94 and got a lot more done then he would have with the same Democrats who were previously in control (Clinton did not move to the center, he moved to the right, despite what the media would say).

That version of Clinton sure disagrees with the one I remember. He vetoed welfare reform twice before signing it when it passed by the Republican congress with a veto proof override.

The much bally-hood shutdown over the budget was planned in advance of the budget even being drawn up by Congress.

Everything that Clinton was given credit for by the press was the result of the congress and everything that Newt was blamed for was the fault of Clinton.

All of the rest of the Cinton apologists posts are overlooking how bad he actually was.

FOLKS - just because Clinton is not the radical anti-American communist like Obama doesn't mean thay he was any less evil than he was when he was in office. Let's not forget that the changes that were made to CRA and F&F that led to this collapse were done under the combines Clinton-Dem congress cabal before the Repubs took the House.

In short, don't get all rosy glasses for Clinton because Obama is smearing our faces in shit.

Ahahaha! Yes, "different kind of a news cycle" with "very inflammatory" commentary. It's just all so new and unprecedented, isn't it Mr. Harkin? Just ask that liar, Chimpy McBushitlerburton and his Satanic cohort, Cheney, about that and how times have changed so uncharacteristically since Obama was deified by the MFM. Maybe, Senator, you could even manage to interview Sarah Palin and demand that she tone down her rhetoric considering all the kid gloves handling her post-Alaskan attention.
