Obama Makes Surprise Visit to Afghanistan
— Dave in Texas

I suppose I'm glad to see him take a break from the healthcare bill wonderfulness campaign trail to do something about his other duties.

Barack Obama has told US troops on his first visit to Afghanistan as US president that they are there to help Afghans to forge a "hard-won peace".

Addressing soldiers at Bagram air base near the capital Kabul, he thanked them for their service and said they would prevail against their enemies.

They were there, he said, to "keep America safe and secure".

Glad isn't exactly the right word, but I'll acknowledge he's doing something he should do. He's the Commander in Chief, and our Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines are deployed in a war zone, carrying out our nation's mission, a mission he has endorsed. If he has the courtesy to travel halfway around the world and say "thank you", well good.

Anyone see this?  Obama made 15 recess appointments today:

WASHINGTON – Fed up with waiting, President Barack Obama announced Saturday he would bypass a vacationing Senate and name 15 people to key administration jobs, wielding for the first time the blunt political tool known as the recess appointment.

The move immediately deepened the divide between the Democratic president and Republicans in the Senate following a long, bruising fight over health care. Obama revealed his decision by blistering Republicans, accusing them of holding up nominees for months solely to try to score a political advantage on him.

"I simply cannot allow partisan politics to stand in the way of the basic functioning of government," Obama said in a statement.

I'd like to give him props for this, but, considering the political situation he's in & the fact that more of our troops keep getting killed in Afghanistan & it doesn't seem to touch him at all, I can't.

Does Obama even feel anything other than anger? I don't think he's capable of shedding tears. At least we know that Pres. Bush strongly supported the military & that each tear shed was real. We also know that Bush 43 was an extremely patriotic man. I watched part of Obama's speech & it didn't seem he meant it.

Even though I live in Canada,

A) I still have to file U.S. taxes, until and if I ever get Canadian citizenship and don't renewmy passport, and, more importantly,

B) if the USA is fucked, Canada is as well.

I'm bummed.  I'mnot throwing in the towel, but I do need to escape obsessing over this shit if I want to keep enough energy until Novemeber.

I can't stand what Obama is doing to my beloved country in general. But I must say that he has pleasantly surprised me regarding Iraq, Afghanistan and even Pakistan. I expected him to cut and run by now.

He dithered much too long on the Afghan escalation, but at least he did two-thirds of a surge. You give American troops 2/3 of the numbers they need, they will give you a victory. He has stuck with the Bush strategy in Iraq. His push on the drone attacks has been a success also.

There is one thing about this that gives me pause. I know he didn't want to take any of the actions listed above. That means the military demonstrated to him that the enemy is very dangerous and convinced him to behave in a serious manner. Fear of a massive attack or other giant problems on his watch are the only reasons I can imagine that would cause him to behave in this way.

That is, things like...a merit-based system for appointment of key government officials, battling corruption and taking the fight to the narco-traffickers, which fuels and provides a lot of the economic engine for the insurgents."

So, here we read that Obama isn't in Afghanistan to thank the troops or to urge them on.

He's there to lecture Hamid Karzai on how to run a country with merit-based hiring systems. Or fucking something.

178 The brief glance I got of him before I sprained a finger on the remote, seeing him in that AF One jacket made me want to hurt a cat.  And I love our two kittehs.  Damn, I hope he never makes an appearance anywhere my boy is serving and my kid is forced to show up and applaud.  Barky would be lucky to get a golf clap from D'oh Boy.

180 I will thank Obama the day he mentions the word "victory" & really means it. Otherwise, I believe he thinks "Bush's wars" are a headache he has to endure when he'd really rather be concentrating on domestic policy.

Obama loves the troops so much he wouldnt even meet with the ones in Germany that were laid up in the hospital because the military brass wouldnt let him bring his press and camera detail along during the campaign.

I'm sure he had no intention of using them as political props.

Hold on a sec, let me check....

183 "Glad isn't exactly the right word, but I'll acknowledge he's doing something he should do. " I'm not so sure about that. My guess is he's about as welcome as a turd in a punch bowl.

184 Anyone besides me immediately think "obumble must feel the need for another photo-op" when they read that it was going over there?

Posted by: emdfl at March 28, 2010 02:55 PM (4x0PU)

185 I'd like to see photos of the crowd like the last time. People sleeping, reading a book, texting instead of the riveted awe struck wide eye stares rapt with adoration

Posted by: harleycowboy at March 28, 2010 02:56 PM (tFvnR)

186 i was watching it on tv and when obama went around to shake hands of the soldiers, some of them backed away and would not shake his hands. immediately, the camera angle was shifted so that you could not see this. the shot was from behind the line of soldiers that were shaking, or not shaking obama's hands. it was pretty funny. it was also funny how the media was making sure that no one saw soldiers refusing to shake the president's hand.

so funny...what a jerk obama is...

187 The Passion of the Christ is something everyone (with the exception of young kids) should see.

This is the last movie I ever went to in a movie theater.  I took my Dad. We both wept.  As violent as it was, it seemed necessary to make the point of how He suffered and sacrificed for those He loves.

188 Any word from Ace?

You won't hear anything from Ace until Monday.  CJ offered me another C-Note to ban Ace over the weekend until Monday.  Time are tough, so of course I snapped at the offer.

I watched it with the Youth Group on Wedenesday. It was the third time I've seen it and it's still a massive gut-punch.

Did Obama begins his speech with something like, "Now that you all fight for Socialism instead of Freedom..."

Posted by: Crusty at March 28, 2010 03:48 PM (qzgbP)

192 If he has the courtesy to travel halfway around the world and say "thank you",...

I question his sincerity.

193 He was happy to be photographed with Karzai but not Netanyahu.

President Obama's words have been contradictory but his overall message has been consistent.

I was extremely disappointed when he was elected and my dismay and disgust has increased with each passing month.  Who would have imagined that my Canadian Prime Minister would be more American in spirit than the American President?

We're living in very strange times, my American cousins.

199 Dave;
Going soft?

he was bored of fucking us AND he ran out of Good Weed and Heroin....... THAT is why he went over there.......
 the rambling message was actually:
" they are there to help Afghans to forget about a "hard-won peace".

"he berated  them for their service and said he would prevail in supporting their enemies."

They were there, he said, to "keep him safe and secure while (he) was smokin' hash and formulatin' grand plans for one world government and a New Communist Order."
