Obama, Pelosi Double-Down on Pure Hardcore Left-Liberalism
— Ace

Madame Palomino is unabashed about declaring health care reform the first step in a fundamental reordering of America along far more socialistic lines.

Also in Allah's post is this interesting piece by Peter Beinart, worth reading in full. But here's a taste. The term "Superjumbo Democrat" means much as you might guess it does -- the metaphor is to Boeing building superjumbo planes even when the market doesn't want them, thus strengthening its brand. A superjumbo Democrat, then, pursues hardcore liberalism even when the public doesn't want it, in the belief that... I don't know. That for some reason the public learns to respect Democrats for doing the opposite of what they ask of them.

Why exactly Obama—advised by David Axelrod, Rahm Emmanuel and Valerie Jarrett—decided to double down on health care remains unclear. But it’s a good bet that President Hillary Clinton—advised by Mark Penn—would have acted differently. And in acting the way he did, Obama has turned himself into a superjumbo Democrat. For the foreseeable future, he has forfeited any chance of bridging the red-blue divide. Prominent Republicans have already announced that if Democrats try to pass health care via reconciliation, they will not work across the aisle to pass anything major this year. Conversely, Obama has cemented his bond with the netroots. It doesn’t really matter that the health care reform bill he is fighting for isn’t particularly left-wing. For the netroots, a politicians’ ideological purity has always been less important than his willingness to resist pressure from the other side, which is exactly what Obama has just done.

Whether health care reform passes or not, Obama has embraced polarization over triangulation. He has chosen Karl Rove’s politics of base mobilization over Dick Morris’s politics of crossover appeal, with consequences not merely for how he campaigns for Democrats in 2010, but for he campaigns for himself in 2012. And that’s a disaster for “don’t scare the bear” Democrats whether Obamacare passes or not. The reason is that the DLC wing of the party is much more top-down than the MoveOn wing. It has always wielded influence primarily through elected leaders rather than grassroots activists. But today, Obama is the only leader in the Democratic Party who really matters. As the retirement of Evan Bayh illustrates, there are few nationally prominent DLC-aligned politicians left. (The one person who could have rallied that faction of the party against Obama is now his secretary of state). The DLC wing’s best hope for relevance, therefore, was that Obama himself would restrain the party’s base, that his White House would nurture a new generation of centrist candidates.

That hope is now gone. From top to bottom, Democrats have decided to bet the partyÂ’s future on the belief that Americans prefer bold liberals to cautious ones. Now itÂ’s up to the bear.

"The bear" is the American public -- for years cautious DLC types argued that liberals mustn't "scare the bear." Obama, Pelosi, Reid et al. have decided to call the bear's bluff and to try to back the bear down.

3 FWIW, Hilary would have probaly gone for a somewhat less intrusive plan to begin with, and then would have triangulated as needed, depending on public reaction. And by now, some sort of bill may well have been signed, and we would be that much further down the liberal path to a social democracy.

The only thing that can fuck this up for us are...the Republicans.

AmishDude asks in the other thread: "Have you noticed that Graham is the Angel of Death on all of these things?"

hmmm, kinda makes one wonder if Graham and some other Republicans in Congress are undercover operatives for the Democrats. Remember how McCain & the GOP were finally gaining traction in 2008 with domestic oil exploration? And then the 'moderates' show up and pour cold water on our momentum.

Here's Graham again...moving forward with Amnesty at a time when when jobs are an endangered species.

12 It's human nature...these guys know this kind of majority comes around once a generation and they are going to take their shot. They were pretty maxed out on districts and states they could win so it was always going to be down hill from here for them. Might as well take your shot when you can.

If Republicans/conservatives had these kind of majorities we'd be demanding all kinds of wild shit we'd know we'd only have one shot at. Ours would be marginally less unpopular on balance but we'd still be trading dream policies for marginal seats and even a few we would expect to keep under normal circumstances.

20 DrewM @ 12 has it exactly right.  I'd only add that a comparable Republican supermajority wouldn't go nearly as far to the right as the Dem one is to the left.  For one thing, the political will to actually cut a government program -- ANY government program -- is sadly lacking, because the Repubs in question know the "conservatives hate [insert group affected by the cut]" drumbeat would be instantaneous, continuous, and tsunami-level.  For some reason the Dems don't have this problem.

For another, the right wing isn't nearly as unified as the left -- the social con/ fiscal con divide is real in a way that the divisions on the left simply aren't (that's why, by the way, I think this thing will pass if they ever get it to a vote.  In the end, Kucinich and all the rest of the "it's not socialist enough" crowd will hear the siren song of history, since this is their big shot to get the socialist foot in the door of 1/6th of the economy).

Still, let the '10 bloodbath begin, and maybe our guys can force through a few minor tax cuts or something.... or at least stop the bleeding....

The funny thing is, Rove had a cross over kind of guy. W. with his 'compassionate' conservatism (as opposed to what exactly?), his No Child Left Behind, Medicare Drug plan, big spending, etc was built for that kind of appeal.

Obama on the other hand has to pander to the base. It's all he knows. Anything to the right of him (like the Clintons) isn't just wrong, it's evil. He's not going there.

Circumstances (9/11) and persistent lying by the Democrats painted Bush as an extremist. As a conservative all I can say is, If Only!

Over at Liveleak.com someone posted the following:

"The danger to America is not Barack Obama but a citizenry capable of entrusting a man like him with the presidency. It will be easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to an electorate willing to have such a man for their president. The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr. Obama, who is a mere symptom of what ails us. Blaming the prince of fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him their prince. The public can survive a Barack Obama. It is less likely to survive a multitude of fools such as those who made him their president...."

Compassionate Conservatism? No Child Left Behind? Medicare Part-D? Shamnesty? Harriet Meyers? Grutter v. Bollinger? These were central themes of Bush's domestic policy agenda. The idea that Bush/Rove did not attempt crossover appeal is PATENTLY FALSE. Bush bent over backwards to "be a uniter, not a divider" but he got a shit sandwich from the likes of Ted Kennedy in return. Indeed, aside from the Bush Tax Cuts, there is hardly a domestic program that was pushed by Bush/Rove that WASN'T designed for crossover appeal.

One small issue with this post:

There is no such thing as "hard-core left liberalism."  To hear the term, you'd think that all the Obama/Pelosi/Reid faction wants is more bohemian coffee houses and Judy Garland photos.  This is, to use the technical term, bullshit.

Technically, "liberalism" means a philosophy of liberty, i.e., the beliefs of Reagan Republicans.  However, over time the term in the US has come to also mean capitalism mixed with a small degree of socialism.

Obama, Pelosi, and Reid do not fit either of these definitions.  Their philosophy is known as Marxist socialism, aka Communism.  If they get their way, it won't mean more bohemian coffee houses; it will mean more concentration camps for those who refuse to toe the Party line.

64 41...exactly.

So the question becomes, how many of the 52%ers are true believers and how many just got suckered by the unicorn fantasies and have/will awaken to their mistake?

Regardless of the percentages now, we are heading to a polarization point where the liberal/conservative populace will not be able to coexist.  Why?  Well, BtotheOCare is exhibit A-Z.  We will either become a socialist country run by statist or we won't, the in-between has disappeared.

Rush says continuously that we cannot reason with libs, they must be defeated.  And while such rhetoric grates on the ears of the great moderates of our society like Brooksie, Frumsie, KPark, and CPowell, the current Constitutional crisis bears out Rush's wisdom.  They do not want to coexist under the founding principles of our nation, so at some point the pot will boil over and there will be blood.

Not sure when, how, or what the why will be, but it will happen.

We have, IMO, 2 hopes.  1.  That B to the O, Gran Nan, and Uncle Harry have misread their hand and overreached in a way that will snap some of the slumbering "bears" back into reality.  Enough to make a difference in 2010, 2012, 2014, and 2016.  A big, game-changing difference.

2.  Well, I can't think of 2 except the return of Christ to straighten this whole mess out.

88 Thank goodness the Empty Suit is tired of talking about this. I don't think I can take another freaking lecture about it. That and having him roll up his sleeves to expose his girly little arms. Lefties are such an androgynous lot: girly men and double butt-ugly women. Amazing that they can reproduce at all. And when they do, they end up with medusa-ugly trolls like Chelsea Clinton. Seriously, it'd take all the tequila in Mexico and all the drugs in California to get a guy to screw the likes of Hillary, M'Chelle, Pelosi... What the hell is wrong with these losers.

98 From Jim Webb:  I support meaningful, fiscally-responsible, and effective health care reform that contains costs, expands access to health care, protects Medicare, and reforms the market for health insurance. I am particularly concerned that we protect Americans with pre-existing medical conditions and foster increased competition among carriers. Significant deviations from these core principles would lead me to withhold my support.   I can take this to mean that you would not vote for the senate passed bill again?

Boeing built the first "jumbo", the 747, based on the belief that airlines would like to own fewer airplanes, offer fewer flights at lower cost per seat-mile, and sell more tickets to move more people.  What's not to like?  A market-driven solution that was a win-win-win for everyone, including the customer.

AirButz on the other hand decided they wanted to build the biggest commercial airplane in the world, a so-called SuperJumbo, so they built the A380.  I am not sure they have made a nickle on it yet, and they are having problems achieving production rates to fulfill their commitments.

I know which one reminds me of ObamaCare, and it ain't the Boeing 747.

110 What would Teddy Roosevelt have to say about this? Theodore Roosevelt: "The American grizzly is a symbol of the American character: strength, intelligence, ferocity. Maybe a little blind and reckless at times... but courageous beyond all doubt. And one other trait that goes with all previous." 2nd Reporter: "And that, Mr. President?" Theodore Roosevelt: "Loneliness. The American grizzly lives out his life alone. Indomitable, unconquered - but always alone. He has no real allies, only enemies, but none of them as great as he." 2nd Reporter: "And you feel this might be an American trait?" Theodore Roosevelt: "Certainly. The world will never love us. They respect us - they might even grow to fear us. But they will never love us, for we have too much audacity! And, we're a bit blind and reckless at times too." Hell yeah, bring it on Nancy!

115 Here's the thing about the superjumbo: when everything is going well, it's a good thing to have. Capacious, comfortable, economical, high-tech, the whole works. It really seems to be the best of all possible worlds...until Murphy's ghost shows up and things fall apart. As they always do. It turns out that gigantism in anything is bad design. It's probably a property of nature. (The average size of a dinosaur was about the size of a dog or a cat, just FYI. The really big boys were a) a small part of the overall dinosaur population, and b) didn't survive very long, either individually or as a group). Being big requires eating a lot -- just maintaining your size takes a lot of work. And if unforseen circumstances occur, just finding enough food to keep your body going can be very hard. Sometimes impossible. You end up burning more energy looking for food than you gain from eating the food you find. Government is in the same pickle now. What governments eat is money, and unfortunately we are reaching a "tipping point" where the government has to "eat" more than it can reasonably find. The looming entitlement diasters -- public pensions, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid -- all require a diet of dollars. And unfortunately, the beast is getting bigger and hungrier at exactly the same time as the money is getting harder to come by. The beast can keep itself alive in the short term by devastating the ecology (in this case, taxing everyone to death), but it's self-defeating because once the ecosystem is ruined, there's nothing left but starvation and slow death. I'm not sure that there's anything mere citizens can do at this point. Our government is pretty clearly hell-bent on ignoring us and continuing to grow. So I think at this point all we can do is position ourselves to weather the collapse when it comes. It a status quo can't continue, then it won't...but the inevitable crash can be much worse than it might have been had people acted to stop it earlier. However, a solution to this problem requires politicians with foresight and a backbone, which means that we are all doomed. Doomed! Doooooooomed! DOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMEED!

Barry is like the transmission from the future in the film "Prince of Darkness". In that movie, the transmission (which shows a dark figure emerging from a church) gets into your head and slowly and inexorably pushes everything else out until the only thing you know is the transmission and its message.

In this instance, those receiving the message is the democratic party and the message is Barry emerging to take over the world. And the transmission is sent by future Barry, not as a warning but as a proclamation of ultimate triumph.

I don't care for this article because it once again ignores the elephant in the room.

Obama and his merry band of Marxists aren't operating under the theory that moving to the left will gain them respect for showing the courage of their convictions.

Or that they believe the public will eventually grow to like their new health care system and thank Democrats for putting it into place.

It has nothing to do with that. The public is going to hate the shitty health care they'll receive. They'll resent it for the rest of their lives and the Democrats know it.

But they're going to ram this monstrosity through anyway because they know that we can't unwind it. We'll just be forced to fight among each other for a dwindling pool of resources that they control.

That's what will keep them in power. That and a fresh wave of illegals who've never experienced just how good US health care once was.

This new system will be all they've ever known. And they'll like it because others are going to be the ones paying for it.

127 Why exactly Obama—advised by David Axelrod, Rahm Emmanuel and Valerie Jarrett—decided to double down on health care remains unclear.

Translation: I, Peter Beinart, Yale-educated DLC-type pundit, can not understand - much less explain - why this administration would continue to pursue legislation that carries so much political liability to both himself and his party.  I can not entertain the notion that Obama might have ideological motivations that far outweigh any political consideration.

P.S. I'm watching the Suicide Girls Guide to Living right now.  It's a collection of clips in which the Suicide Girls offer expert advice on essential life skills (e.g. How to kill a vampire, roll a joint, or recover from a hangover).  I thought their only real expertise was being naked and tattoo'd up.  Fortunately, they deliver all their lessons in varying states of nakedness.  1.5 stars.

130 Back to the point. The Pub leadership has missed opportunities to stop this trainwreck. Among the things I'd be saying if I were Minority Leader in the Senate (hey, it could happen): First, no more unanimous consent on anything, including the renaming of a post office. Mr. Reid, you'll need to have your people sleeping on the floor of the Senate to move the bills forward. My people will object to everything, and I mean everything. The complaint of not reading a bill before voting on it? That'll never happen again Mr. Reid because we'll object every time your side moves to dispense with the reading. Not posting a bill? That's a point of order. No more manager's bills, either, and no more substituting the manager's text for the stated text of a bill. We'll be loud, we'll stop the Senate, and we'll take our chances in November. Remember, Mr. Reid, more people watch Fox. Have a nice day.

136 I think the problem we are all having trouble getting our heads around is, is that we are no longer electing officials to govern ACCORDING TO THE PEOPLE'S WILL, we have elected rulers into office and, once they have passed their healthcare they believe, according to pelosi, they can do whatever they want, because they have broken the will of the people.  We must submit.  Now what does that term, submit, have in common with our formerly acknowledged enemy?
