I propose my compromise mostly as a way to call the bluffs of the Dems.  They know that the military option will have a negligible effect on the numbers of illegals--it's the most minimal and onerous kind of amnesty.

And as Sukie Tawdry pointed out, the military can have an assimilating and conservatizing effect on those illegal enlistees.  Of course, a lot of that will be lost if DADT is repealed because many of the more conservative servicemen will eventually leave.  But that's why neither bill should be passed as they now stand.  (Another compromise: repeal DADT--but restore the status quo ante: restate the incompatibility of homosexuality and military service.)

Anyone from anywhere can enlist if he meets the basic requirements. This has been a policy for at least 150 years. My gr-gr-grandfather got citizenship for his service in the Civil War. I'm just saying make it possible for someone who was brought here illegally as a child. The numbers would not be real large, and they have to meet other requirements, just as any enlistee.

As for how the votes are lining up, that link to HA speaks to that issue somewhat. There is no clear list because although we expect to get several "moderates" stabbing us in the back again there are several Dems who are going to cross over and vote with the Repubs (we hope). We will have to watch how they vote on cloture. Dems like to vote FOR cloture on this kind of shit, then vote against the bill itself when the vote doesn't mean a damn thing. They can then tell their voters they voted against it when, in fact, they didn't.

At least this time McLame will vote against it so Grahamnasty will too. This will be a tight one on cloture, but like the "Tax Deal" if they get cloture it is a done deal.

Those pushing for the Dream Act have been going at it 24/7 and are part of the progressive machine.  The Catholic Bishops are supporting it and there are literally hundreds of thousands of students who have been working on this and huge numbers have descended upon D.C.

They are pushing the Maine sisters hard and are making this into a "moral" argument.

Funny thing happened here in Wis. We changed the Assembly, Senate, and Gov. from dem to repub. In the lame duck session the other night, them dems wanted to extend the state workers union contract by 4 years so incoming Gov. Walker could not change it. It passed the Assembly but tied in the senate where the dem leader voted with the pubs to make it a tie vote. The measure failed. Dem leader said the people voted for Walker and the pubs, so the contract should by rights be left to the new gov. Senate then adjourned and went home.

Oh, the dem leader was removed from his post immediately after the failed vote.

The one good thing about this extension is the fact that it will force tax simplification to the forefront.

Obama is already talking about moving toward a flatter, simpler tax code.  The GOP should call his bluff and pass a straight flat tax with a reasonable standard deduction. 

Eliminate payroll taxes.  Eliminate capital gains.  Eliminate the estate tax.  Lower the corporate tax to 10%.

To summarize Obama's first two years, he has used Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Bill Clinton and yes, even George Bush as crutches, unable to accomplish anything on his own merits or with his own managerial skills.
