I don't blame him for pulling up there, the threat of thunderstorms and lightning isn't something to take lightly.

You know? I would have sworn I saw a Twitter post by NBC's Chuck Todd this morning, explaining to us how other Presidents have skipped Arlington on Memorial Day. Like GWB skipped out on Arlington in 2002.

To deliver a speech at Normandy, on May 27 2002.

I likely got that wrong, and I apologize to Chuck Todd for that.

According to ExJon, VP Joe did a respectable job at Arlington today.

51 One of my stepbrothers closest friends served in the Old Guard at Arlington .
When I first met this kid he was kind of a semi hippie party dude . Nice kid , eager to have a good time , the kid in the neighborhood that bags your groceries on Saturday .
Service with the old guard changed him for life . He's now a serious citizen and a fine man .
God Bless the Old Guard and the heroes resting at Arlington . My father has been there with his comrades for the last fifteen yrs.
I'm glad Obama wasn't available .

No he doesn't. He has a son, Beau ( the other kid's name is worse, Hunter)who is a lawyer, and who did serve as a lawyer in Iraq. He has been home for months. During the Bush Administration, Biden threw a tantrum about Iraq, and claimed that Bush policy was going to get his son killed, Of course he gave a quiet apology after it turned out that Beau hadn't as yet gone near Iraq, and would be serving behind a desk anyway.

Actually, Biden's son Beau Biden has been back for some time. While he served in Iraq, he is a JAG officer, so he wasn't exactly doing foot patrols in Fallujah. Note, his son suffered a stroke earlier this month. I hope (and I hope that all the morons on this site also hope) he makes a speedy & full recovery.

Now, as far as our president hangin' out in Chicago as opposed to laying a wreath at Arlington. The Tomb Of The Unknowns is not the gravesites of those three individuals, but symbolically is the resting place of all US veterans, regardless where they are buried, if their graves are even marked, if anyone remembers them, etc. The Tomb Guards are there 24/7 to show that the Army (and by extension all US military branches) will never forget them. The President is the Commander In Chief and, unless the business of the State takes him away, should at least make the trip to Arlington to pay his respects to ALL who have passed. It is a symbolic gesture; however symbols are very powerful, especially in the military.
