But here's the problem. Grivalja of Arizona yesterday said he wouldn't vote yes. (Corrected; see below.)
Now he says he just might and probably will.
President ObamaÂ’s message to progressives who are dissatisfied with the Senate health care bill is two fold: First: DonÂ’t forget about the uninsured. Second: DonÂ’t forget what failure to pass this bill would do to the party and my presidency. In a meeting with House progressives today, Obama made the pitch.
Speaking to reporters in the Speaker’s lobby off the House floor, Congressional Progressive Caucus Co-Chair Raul Grijalva (D-AZ) said the President reminded them that “If this opportunity passes, much of our agenda, on the progressive side…it would be difficult, if not impossible for a generation to get back to this issue.”
I asked if the message was convincing to those in attendance.
“It’s pretty compelling,” Grijalva said.
ThatÂ’s a significant change from his tone earlier in the week, when Grijalva said he was inclined to vote against the bill from the left.
Obama reminded the assembled Democrats that doing nothing would be politically disastrous. “To maintain a strong presidency we need to pass this bill,” the President said, according to Grijalva.
That's a problem -- we might expect a half dozen progressives to flip their votes, too.
More Promises: Hey, If You Pass My Bill, We Can Use It As the Foundation for Full-Fledged Socialist Takeover: Telling those leftwingers they can use this as a step on the way to the public option or single payer.
Correction: I first wrote that Grivalja wouldn't flip his vote from no to yes, but now says he might.
In fact, he was a "yes" vote before -- he had decided he might vote against the Senate version of the bill. So he was talking about changing a yes to a no, but now is saying he'll probably keep his yes a yes.
Thanks to "Obama is Carter" for that correction. As he says, this is not a net gain for Obama, but instead a hold, where we had been hoping it was a net loss.

Even they must see that. This is the end of the line. Maybe they think Republicans can't repeal it, but passing this bill this way will bring white-hot hatred from the electorate.
Frankly, I knew this would be Obama's last pitch: Save me.
His presidency is over. The only question is whether people will be disappointed or whether they will loathe him.

Krauthammer seems to be hedging a little bit. One day I heard him say NO, then he said YES in the house but no in the senate on reconcilliation.
Problem is, if the house passes the current senate bill, then we are fucked and its trillions down the drain!

Repeal is possible, but the Republicans are not going to get enough votes in Congress. They'll probably get a bare majority in the House, and close to a majority in the Senate.
So the issue won't be a text book repeal. The Republicans will have to get innovative in removing this program, and show a damn spine when the media harpies come for them.

Repealing this is a total pipedream unless we have 60 votes in the senate, a decent majority in house, and a conservative POTUS. The earliest that comes to be is 2013, and that is not a slam dunk by any means.
We might have white house and congress, but 60 votes?
Could we repeal it with reconcilliation? Ive heard some GOP senators say yes, others have said no, and that is not a chance we can afford to take.

I looked it up.....
In the United States, Congress can verride" href="http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/override">override a presidential veto by having a two-thirds majority vote in both the House of Representatives and Senate, thus enacting the bill into law despite the president's veto. However, a veto may not be overridden if it is a pocket veto, a veto in which the president simply ignores a bill between congressional sessions. The veto override is an example of checks and balances, the process in which various branches of the U.S. government can limit each others' power.

We conservatives fight each other constantly. And center-right folks sometimes seem more interested in attacking solid conservatives then they are liberals.
The left though idolize those on the left most extreme, yeah maybe they are too "idealistic" but really, is that a bad thing? This gives a strong push to keep sliding further left, because that is where what they see as the moral path is.
Additionally, their notion of historical progress and utopianism means that they have to follow up every success that does not bring about Paradise with another push to the left.
I'm not sure the modern left therefore can return to moderatism. Certainly look at the progression of nominees they've had from Gore, to Kerry, to Obama. The liberal half of the Clinton couple was viewed as not liberal enough even after 8 years of boogieman Bush.

The progressive asshats were going to vote for it anyway. They've always been up Obama's ass. We just have to find a way to keep the damn vote below 217 in the House, and I'm still not sure nan has the votes. If she did, they would have already done this thing.
Plus, they have to have, at least, 217 in the House & 51 in the Senate to all agree on the exact same language in a reconciliation bill. That is if they can get 217 in the House to fall for the BS that there will actually be a reconciliation bill passed by the Senate & signed into law by the prez. That isn't going to happen. I truly believe that is just a freakin' ruse to try & get the House to pass the Senate bill.
We have to stop this in the House. If we can't...well, I don't want to think about that.

It seems to me this formation shows that even the bill's supporters acknowledge that the American people DO NOT WANT this bill. After all, if this was a notion that garnered public support, there would be other chances. Why couldn't it just pass in the next Congress? Or in a decade? I mean jeez, there was a huge prescription drug entitlement passed when Dems didn't even control the chamber! It's simple - even Democrats know this country doesn't fundamentally believe with them. They understand the majorities they have garnered are a historical accident - the combination of an unpopular term-limited president from the opposing party, a Republican Party that spent 12 years abandoning many of the principles that got them elected in the first place, and a wild radical elected president with the complicity of an adoring press and an incompetent opponent.
And yet, forward they push. Why? Simple - they don't believe in government by the people. The modern American left is a technocratic movement. They know better than the rubes, and they were able to fool the people just long enough to get the majorities they need.
But don't take my word for it - take theirs.

@78: "It depends what you mean by "repeal". Assuming HHS is overseeing Obamacare, pass budgets that do not fund HHS. At all. Which isn't really reconciliation in and of itself, but a clever majority leader could probably finagle it that way."
That assumes that a GOP Congress would have: (1) the desire to shrink the government; (2) the will to actually do it. There is basically no historical proof of either, nor any reason to believe that it will appear in the future. They're pretty much cool with socialism, so long as it is a slow-growth form.

At some point, which gets much closer if Obamacare passes, the federal government will fail because the resources to meet its promises are not available. Also, for those saying that it can't be repealed, remember that the actual provisions of this will not go into effect for a few years but the taxes will be immediate. So don't think that people won't still be pissed off about this in 2012 as they will have been paying taxes for nothing. You then add Obama's veto as part of your campaign strategy and you run on repeal again.
Still, the best thing would be to kill this now.

Okay, they just lost Delahunt. Roller coaster up.
If you listened to Beck today, he had Jim DeMint on to talk about this. DeMint didn't think it was going to fly. However, he advised getting a group of 10 or 12 folks together to go to their local libtard rep's office and to let the newspaper know you're going. He admitted that that was one of the things that struck fear into his heart.
He also admitted to Glenn that once an entitlement is in place, it can't be undone. I think an out-of-the box thinker like Palin could lure people out of it with the tradeoff of a healthcare tax break for opting out and putting you back in control of your healthcare. From there, it will become a status symbol to have easy, accessible healthcare.
How can something as unconstitutional as making citizens buy something be allowed to stand? What about the seven or so states that have already stated they will not enforce ZeroCare?

Has anyone President before, in our history, appealed to the Congress to save his pathetic ass? I can't think of an example. I would think that a Constitutional scholar would have a bit of understanding about separation of powers and all, but what do I know? Of course, we don't have a President, just a Precedent ... so I guess this is "normal" ...
Meanwhile, I have a bad feeling that the treasonous dems are going to close their eyes and set off their suicide belts. This health scare has a decent chance of being passed by dems who are terrified of The Precedent pulling the race card on them, so ... I see secession being the likely reaction to that. Repeal only goes so far, and having passed this turd (that should have died 6 months ago, were it not for the Indonesian Imbecile and his contempt for our system) is a clear sign that this federal government has truly gone feral and will not be domesticated again.

Exactly. If this passes and proves irrepealable, it will have to be yet another case where the citizens taken matters into their own hands. A movement bent on bringing down the system would be in order. Flood it - cripple it - burden it so badly that if falls down. Call the doctor for every ache and pain. Go the the emergency room for every sniffle - just like the welfare scum do today.
Happily, we simply can't afford it. We can't borrow and print money forever in infinite amounts. Eventually the entire system will fall. We will reach a point where people no longer have too much to lose. Then more vigorous action can be taken. Passing health care will bring that day much closer.

Not to mention the fact that it is the US health care market that drives R+D for the whole world. No one spends money to create any drugs, machines, procedures, ... unless they have the US market as the primary target, because that's the only place where the profits are. If we do away with our market, and the extra we have paid for the R+D, the whole world's health care slips into an intense stagnation (as socialist systems are all stagnating influences - as centralization forces stagnation to fit its own limited designs).
I just can't get past the idiocy of liberals who see the Euros drafting off of our health care system (and the extra we pay to for development) and think that the US can also draft off of ...
If this health scare goes through, not only is our basic delivery and availability destroyed, but health care advancement will come to a pretty quick halt.

I agree but am also afraid that we don't even get to be France for all that long.
It's my understanding that the social-democracy economies in Europe have been able to keep going as long as they have, in part, because they were able to draft along behind the U.S.
How long does France get to be France once we go down?

I'm not indisposed; in fact, I'm becoming less so with each passing moment.
What I meant by the bitter clingers being indisposed was that real america doesn't hold the senate, the congress or the presidency. It appears to be a temporary situation and they know that. I also think they know that they have awakened a sleeping giant----one that f-up the last election by nominating McCain, staying home for the sake of purity, or not putting out enough numbers to counter act the fraud. Indisposed as in not available for the moment or not active for the moment. It is their chance to change america but they don't have much time.
I have to admit that they have been clever. They have the media, they have the voter fraud, they have the universities, they have the aliens, they have the poor and the lazy. But we are still here and I think that there are more of us than there are of them---at least I think there are.

The GOP has been concentrating on the cost issues, ceding all of the truly nasty and un-American aspects of the dems' plans. It's pathetic and has been driving me crazy.

Very true. I've written about this now and again. Leftists have the whole world to choose from, for systems that are closer to what they claim they want, but they have to muck up the unique nation that stands alond in its individualism and respect for private property (though that respect has been very successfully attacked by the left and taken down 5 notches, already).
It really does highlight the authoritarian streak of the Left. In fact, trying to deny people the right to leave might be the central mark of authoritarian systems.
Posted by: 18-1 at March 04, 2010 10:15 PM (bgcml)
Competition is not allowed in leftist systems, since they always lose. It's funny, in a morbid, disgusting way, that the same leftists who scream bloody murder about the need to teach biological evolution in high school but have never met an evolutionary pressure that they didn't think they knew better than. The left is always striving to build empowered, peerless, competitionless entities, which any cursory knowledge of evolutionary theory (or basic common sense) would clearly point to the idea that such entities always grow in grotesque and destructive ways.
This is why I can't believe anyone with more than two brain cells could even support the theory of the UN, let alone actually implementing such insanity. Now, that is a truly peerless, competitionless entity, though the left tries to create their own by restricting the right to leave their leftist utopias.

Depends on your expectations. There are some warm third world nations in this hemisphere that aren't violent or disorderly - just poor - and have NO welfare state. They like people with capital and skills and a work ethic. I hope to be making my land purchase and setting up accounts later this year or early next year in my area of choice. Sadly I'll need to work at least 10 more years to build up my retirement pile. I hope other morons who are old enough to have accumulated stuff will start looking around as well. Very much so. I am so distressed that the GOP never addressed this point of the Euros leeching off of our system and the fact that we pay extra for the best, and driving advancement, that I don't even have words for it.
One of my favorites is the whole "we need to re-import drugs from Canada where they are so ever so much less expensive than the US" idea.

Hear, hear! I laugh when I hear the re-importation arguments. It's almost as if these idiot leftists thinkt hat the drugs originated in Canada. They are just clueless. And, again, the GOP has had nothing to say about this.

Do you mean this Raúl Grijalva (D-AZ)?
Raúl began his public career as a community organizer when he joined with several other advocates to start El Rio Community Health Center. During his time at El Rio, Raúl worked with other activists to "encourage" local governments to "invest" in older and minority neighborhoods. He helped organize "neighborhood empowerment efforts" that prompted the city of Tucson to expand services to the south and west sides...
...From 1974 to 1986, Raúl served on the Tucson Unified School District. He was a hands-on board member who worked to increase funding and support for public education, and who advocated on behalf of teacher, employee and civil rights (Unions & La Raza)...
...Since his election to Congress in 2002, Raúl has worked to improve the quality of life for working families by promoting minimum wage increases, supporting legislation to prevent intimidation, and pushing to help employees organize and represent themselves in the workplace.
And in case you were wondering about the demographics in his chunk of a red state:
The southern boundary of District 7 coincides with 300 miles of the US/Mexico border. Only TexasÂ’ 23rd district has a longer stretch of the southern border.
The urban center of District 7 contains the central, south and west sides of the city of Tucson (The shootier and stabbier bits). The population within the district is predominantly working-class families, from a variety of ethnic and racial backgrounds. The majority of TucsonÂ’s Hispanic, urban Native American and African-American residents live in the 7th congressional district.
I'm really quite curious about this "strong candidate" that the tea party is supporting. I ain't heard a peep of a real contender going up against the asshat in his district. Unfortunately, I fear that Grievance Grijalva is as well ensconced in his patch as any other race-hustler / poverty pimp from a big blue state city.

Item 1. REPEAL obamacare "
Naw... With McConnell in charge of the Senate,
Item 1 : Cower in the corner in fear of how it might look taking people's insurance away.
Item 2 : Blather on and on about how the Democrats used parlimentary tricks to pass Obamacare without making any coherent concise message about what the GOP stands for...
Item 3 : Repeat Item 1 thru Item 3...
