I have heard that Chicago actually has the largest concentration of Polish people outside of Warsaw. No other city in Poland has more then 1 mil people total and we've apparently 1.1 million of them.

Not if you are leaving from here (*USA). You would only go down through the ash, and that time could be reduced to less than 1 minute I would think. And surely there are areas where the ash is reduced even from there. Those engines are designed to ingest some debris, cause the air isn't that clean anyway. It is said it is too high to be a danger to people on the ground. So that would imply a band of possible ash you might have to pass through. People are calling for airlines to resume service, it they do then they must think it isn't that dangerous.  Maybe I'm wrong. Not an expert on turbines, volcanic ash, or high altitude air currents.
