Obama to Poland: I'm a Mother Duffer
— Jack M.

I found this essay by Nile Gardiner to be worth a read.

Hey Joe...we're a couple of Mother Duffers aren't we?

Obama's (at best) ambivalence toward our European allies is a national embarrassment. Yes, DVD gift pack to Gordon Brown, I am looking at you. Yes, unwanted bust of Churchill, I am looking at you too. Yes White House gift shop presents for Gordon Brown's kids, I am also giving you an unPresidential "shout-out".

At worst, his passive-aggressive disdain for our traditional allies places Americans and American interests at extreme risk. Yes, scrapped european missile shield, I am looking at you.

And, to be truthful, I think part of my anger stems from the firm belief, if not outright conviction, that had Polish President Lech Kaczynski been a left-wing, anti-American, despot instead of a pro-American, free-market, anti-communist leader, the Mother Duffer (32 rounds in 14 months? really? OK..Tiger) would have moved Heaven and Earth to be there or to have acknowledged the event in some meaningful way.

Could you really see him skipping out on, say, Chavez' state funeral? Of letting it pass without some solemn intonation about the importance of the Chavista revolution? Really? I can't. No matter how many volcanoes erupt along the ring of fire, I have no doubt that Pres. Tiger Obama would have found some way to show his solidarity with that regime.

Which is what makes this point Gardiner raises resonate so clearly for me:

One would have thought that President Obama might have used the time he would have spent in Poland paying his respects to the Polish fallen. For example he could have visited the recently erected Victims of Communism memorial in Washington, or at the very least have signed the condolence book at the Polish Embassy. But what did he choose to do instead? Play yet another round of golf...

It is hard to think of anything more insulting to the Polish people on the day they mourned the loss not only of their president but much of their political and military leadership, for the president of the United States to be enjoying a round of golf after canceling plans to attend the funeral. It is yet another disgraceful example of crass insensitivity to a close American ally, which has become the hallmark of the Obama administrationÂ’s amateurish foreign policy.

Exactly right. Would have taken an hour out of his day and would have been seen as a welcome gesture by a country who has long counted on the United States to stand with it in opposition to the forces of totalitarianism to the East. The newly resurgent forces of totalitarianism that with whom our dear leader's regime recently signed a ridiculous nuclear treaty.

And don't think this is just me spouting off on a rant here. The Poles themselves have noticed too.

Mr Obama's Sunday golf game prompted anger in Poland, where the Warsaw Business Post carried a headline reading: "Obama goes golfing instead of attending Kaczynskis' funeral".

Hey...what's a backhanded slap to a country assisting our efforts in Afghanistan anyway, right?

I guess, on some level, I should be glad that Obama/Biden blew off the funeral. Lord knows, Slow Joe + open mic = irresistible urge to start a eulogy with a "How many Poles does it take to land an airplane"? joke. God love him.

So, I guess we at least were spared that inevitable, additional embarrassment.

Which, as far as this administration goes, is probably their most significant international achievement.

18 From a Maddie, at that link:

The Chicago area has the largest concentration of people of Polish descent outside Poland. There was a memorial service by Cardinal Francis George and Bishop Thomas Paprocki and a march led by a horse drawn glass carriage from Poland.

I doubt Obama ever connected with the Polish community in Chicago either.

38 Great post, Jack, but we need to stop calling Obama's dissing of our allies "amateurism."  It's not amateurism - he's doing it intentionally.  Basically, if you've been a friend of the US over the past few decades, and especially during the Bush 43 years, Obama does not want to be a friend to you.  Ditching Poland in favor of a round of golf is just the lastest example of his overall anti-allies policy.

The president of the U.S. cannot just put himself in danger of a plane crash. I apologized for Obama and Biden's behavior, the total inadequacy of our own state department and let them know that even though our current regime was too stupid to realize it that we the American people understood how truly important Poland is as an ally and how much they've risked and sacraficed on our behalf.

I informed the Ambassador that my wish is that he would convey my deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the people of Poland, and that just because our current regime doesn't display it that the people of America are truly with Poland in the face of this terrible tragedy.  I would suggest others do the same, you can contact their embassy here:

90 Chavez' state funeral? Of letting it pass without some solemn intonation about the importance of the Chavista revolution? Really? I can't.

Everything President Obama does is based on his radical leftist academic perspective on life. Chavez is not white (by his definition) and is a member of an oppressed minority, so supporting him is right. The Poles are white Europeans so they are the oppressor and he doesn't need to show them respect.

Not if you are leaving from here (*USA). You would only go down through the ash, and that time could be reduced to less than 1 minute I would think. And surely there are areas where the ash is reduced even from there. Those engines are designed to ingest some debris, cause the air isn't that clean anyway. It is said it is too high to be a danger to people on the ground. So that would imply a band of possible ash you might have to pass through. People are calling for airlines to resume service, it they do then they must think it isn't that dangerous.  Maybe I'm wrong. Not an expert on turbines, volcanic ash, or high altitude air currents.

That's just a slap in the face of Poland IMHO. Warsaw is a 5.5 hour train trip from Berlin.

That was pretty f#cked up.  Merkel, most of all, should have been there.  And she was certainly close enough.

I'm with the Cur here.  If he had even a remotely decent GPA, it would have been yet another example of his stellar intelligence.  Even the legendary "B+" would have been touted as how difficult that was to maintain at an Ivy League school and it was equivalent to an A+++++ at some hill-billy school like Idaho.

194 All the fucking Europeans who wanted "that cowboy Bush" gone have gotten exactly what they wanted. I don't know if the Poles sucked down gallons of Obama's kool-aid the way the Germans, French, and British did, but I suppose Poland has a long history of being collateral damage anyway.

Merkel spent 2 days trying to get home from San Francisco because of the ash cloud and was probably worn out by that.

The German President and others took a helicopter to get to the funeral.

Merkel had the sense not to be seen in public having a great time during the funeral.

Speaking of which, have you seen that article on Drudge about the faulty computer models (I'm shocked!) for doing something so simple (comparatively) as forecasting the ash cloud's path?

"Flawed computer models may have exaggerated the effects of an Icelandic volcano eruption that has grounded tens of thousands of flights, stranded hundreds of thousands of passengers and cost businesses hundreds of millions of euros.

The computer models that guided decisions to impose a no-fly zone across most of Europe in recent days are based on incomplete science and limited data, according to European officials. As a result, they may have over-stated the risks to the public, needlessly grounding flights and damaging businesses.

'It is a black box in certain areas,' Matthias Ruete, the EUÂ’s director-general for mobility and transport, said on Monday, noting that many of the assumptions in the computer models were not backed by scientific evidence."

LOL.  These Euros and their climate models - which are far more complicated than merely modeling the movement of an ash cloud ...

And we have our idiot State department talking about evil human global warming, now ...

206 In all honesty, Obama did not belong at the funeral of a brave man who loved freedom and was a good ally of the USA.  After all, Obama was and is against every value the president of Poland stood for.  It is just as well he did not dishonor that sad event with his presence.

He's not too bright when it comes to protocol anyway; the useless DVDs he gave to Gordon Brown and the iPod he gave the Queen of England full of video footage and photographs of her 2007 United States visit to Virginia. Thoughtless and crass. That's how he rolls.

If Fidel Castro or Hugo Chavez happens to kick off before he leaves office, you can bet he'll be right there getting in his photo op at the state funeral.

This latest snub follows the renege on the missile defense agreement with Poland and the Czech Republic. No one could blame them if they simply said 'Fuck Obama. We'll wait until the United States gets another leader in office.'

211 He's not too bright when it comes to protocol anyway

Few people are, especially in this day and age. Yet a proper leader would select an experienced subordinate to properly deal with protocol issues. State and Defense are full of people who do that sort of thing in their sleep.

That's assuming that all of these faux pas' are unintentional, of course.

Exactly right.  The ash cloud is a legit excuse: a ten-minute drive up 16th Street isn't, and comes across as a deliberate slight even if it isn't.

Why do I now feel the need, as an American, to go around explaining to foreigners, in the inestimable lines of Mr. Incredible: "I'm not affliated with him!"

The media always told me I needed to do this with some other presidents, but this is the first time I really have felt any great urge to do so (although now the media tells me I need not).
