Obama vs. History
— LauraW

A little while back, Obama was busted here on AOSHQ for his interesting take on historical events.

And today, this:

Obama quoted Abraham Lincoln again yesterday "that government should do for the people what they cannot do better for themselves."

He has used this quote over and over again, and as ever, the mainstream press helplessly accept his every utterance as geese being force-fed for pâté.

Now, I can't seem to find this quote directly attributed to Abe Lincoln anywhere, which is why I am asking Moron Nation to help me find it.

Because I'll bet you dollars to donuts Abe didn't actually say what Obama is implying he did. It is more likely that, as in the case of "Islam always being part of America," this is either an outright fantasy or it opposes Lincoln's original context and intent.

By the way: if you aren't following Mr. Knoller on Twitter, please consider it. He has a nifty job.

FASTEST. UPDATE. EVER.

The legitimate object of government, is to do for a community of people, whatever they need to have done, but can not do, at all, or can not, so well do, for themselves in their separate, and individual capacities. In all that the people can individually do as well for themselves, government ought not to interfere.”

Yes. The opposite meaning. The very opposite.

UPDATE NUMBER B: A nicely-executed post on this very subject, linked by Mike in comments. Thanks, Mike.

Thanks to MJ at H2.

Everybody take a Slurpee with them to the polls on Nov. 2nd!

They may kick you out for wearing WWE gear up in CT, or tell you that you have to cover up any campaign t-shirts, but I think everyone who's voting GOP should be standing in line sipping Slurpees.  Get enough people doing it, I'm sure video of people holding Slurpees will make it into the national news coverage that night.

What a great UP YOURS to Obambi!

"The legitimate object of government is to do for people what needs to be done." Lincoln made these comments on what role the government should play on July 1, 1854. Lincoln asked why government exists. "Why not each individual," he said, "take himself the whole fruit of his labor, without having any of it taxed away...?" He answered saying that government should do what people cannot do by individual effort. Lincoln cited many examples of things that people cannot do on their own: making and maintaining roads and bridges, providing for the helpless, providing schools, and disposing of the deceased's property.

Not really, Wes.  If you have to agree with Obama, don't agree on some of his most absurd grounds.

The vast expansion of the federal 'government' during the Civil War was almost entirely an expansion of the military.  The 'government' shrunk dramatically at the end of the War and by the end of the Reconstruction Era had returned to its historically limited size and role.  The modern expansion of government dates the Progressive Era.

In all that the people can individually do as well for themselves, government ought not to interfere.”

I punched that full quote into here and got this as the top item on the list.  It's a general correspondence fragment from the 1840's and has no addressee.  There may be other uses by Lincoln with a somewhat different wording but I haven't tried looking for them.

93 The legitimate object of government, is to do for a community of people, whatever they need to have done, but can not do, at all, or can not, so well do, for themselvesin (sic) their separate, and individual capacities. In all that the people can individually do as well for themselves, government ought not to interfere. The desirable things which the individuals of a people can not do, or can not well do, for themselves, fall into two classes: those which have relation to wrongs, and those which have not. Each of these branch off into an infinite variety of subdivisions. The firstthat (sic) in relation to wrongsembraces (sic)all crimes, misdemeanors, and nonperformance of contracts. The other embraces all which, in its nature, and without wrong, requires combined action, as public roads and highways, public schools, charities, pauperism, orphanage, estates of the deceased, and the machinery of government itself. From this it appears that if all men were just, there still would be some, though not so much, need for government.

But for years afterward, WikiLeaksÂ’ newly-released Iraq war documents reveal, U.S. troops continued to find chemical weapons labs, encounter insurgent specialists in toxins, and uncover weapons of mass destruction.

An initial glance at the WikiLeaks war logs doesn’t reveal evidence of some massive WMD program by the Saddam Hussein regime — the Bush administration’s most (in)famous rationale for invading Iraq. But chemical weapons, especially, did not vanish from the Iraqi battlefield. Remnants of Saddam’s toxic arsenal, largely destroyed after the Gulf War, remained. Jihadists, insurgents and foreign (possibly Iranian) agitators turned to these stockpiles during the Iraq conflict — and may have brewed up their own deadly agents.

101 More about the WikiLeaks document dump:

It Was IranÂ’s War, Too

No one would accuse WikiLeaks of being pro-war. Not when the transparency group titled its single most famous leak “Collateral Murder.” Not when its founder, Julian Assange, said that its trove of reports from the Afghan conflict suggested evidence for thousands of American “war crimes.”

So itÂ’s more than a little ironic that, with its newest document dump from the Iraq campaign, WikiLeaks may have just bolstered one of the Bush administrationÂ’s most controversial claims about the Iraq war: that Iran supplied many of the Iraq insurgencyÂ’s deadliest weapons and worked hand-in-glove with some of its most lethal militias.

The documents indicate that Iran was a major combatant in the Iraq war, as its elite Quds Force trained Iraqi Shiite insurgents and imported deadly weapons like the shape-charged Explosively Formed Projectile bombs into Iraq for use against civilians, Sunni militants and U.S. troops.

A report from 2006 claims “neuroparalytic” chemical weapons from Iran were smuggled into Iraq. (It’s one of many, many documents recounting WMD efforts in Iraq.) Others indicate that Iran flooded Iraq with guns and rockets, including the Misagh-1 surface-to-air missile, .50 caliber rifles, rockets and much more.

Now I am engaged in a great public struggle, testing whether my vacation or any vacation so conceived and so dedicated can extend longer. I am teeing off on yet another course of my choosing. I have come to dedicate a portion of my time as a final resting-place for the idea that I got elected to waste my brilliance on a nation of takers who will not give. It is altogether fitting and proper that I should do this: after all, I won. But in a larger sense, I cannot obfuscate, I cannot concentrate, I cannot sound at all profound. My advance men, Marxist and red who smuggled me here have conflated matters far above my pay grade to adjust or correct. The world had better note and long remember what I say, period, so it will never forget what I've done while here. It is for you the admiring rather to be dedicated here to finish my work which I who got here have thus far so nobly avoided. It is rather for me to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before me--that from these uneven roughs and fast greens I take increased devotion to that cause for which I will give my last full measure of devotion--attaining a ten handicap--that I here highly resolve that these divots shall not have been dug in vain, that this nation under God shall have a new cause for rejoicing, and that governing over the people, despite the people, in defiance of the people shall neither deflect nor impede me, the greatest leader on this earth."

Charlie Gibson,  you are so correct sir.  It's far easier to pump out welfare babies, smoke crack, and deal a little ganja to make ends meet, especially when the monies made from my government job is so small.

You ask about my government job?  I'm a professional welfare recipient who works hard at her job. On occasion,  if I've spent most of my money on dope, I just do a little flat-backing for extra credit.

My kids now eat all three meal a day at school, and on the weekends, I send them to the local church for free food. Also, the church ladies come around every few weeks to see if we need anything.  I always have my list ready, and they buy all the stuff for me free.  On my list now is about ten bags of candy for Halloween,  and a few slabs of pork ribs for my end of summer barbecue.

Well, I gotta go now and take a nap, 'cause life is hard!

128 As I understand the Lincoln quote, he meant: (1) If individuals can't satisfy some need of theirs at all, then it's the government's job; and (2) If individuals can't satisfy some need of theirs AS WELL AS the government can, then it's the government's job. AliBama's remark most closely resembles (2) above. He mistakenly leaves out Lincoln's limiting it to needs, and so mistakenly, I think, attributes to Lincoln the view that it is the government's job to do everything and anything it can do better than any individual can. But even limiting it to needs, it seems that Lincoln is advocating a much larger role for government than the minimal state types would accept. How much of our lives does that cover? How many of our needs can government satisfy better than individuals can? Common defense? Law enforcement? (Think Hobbes) What else? We know what AliBama thinks. He thinks there's nothing he can't do better than any of us: health care, education, business, housing, lunch, and thinking---because you bitter clingers and fraidy cats can't think straight, so he'll have to do it for you. Be the wave.

Even though Obama does for this country what Lucille Ball does for assembly lines, I have to point out that Mark Knoller's tweet is WRONG...

Obama did NOT say "that government should do for the people what they cannot do better for themselves."

Here's Obama's EXACT quote...

"We believe that government has to be lean and efficient, but in the words of the first Republican president, Abraham Lincoln, who, by the way, would have difficulty winning the Republican nomination today, we also believe that government should do for the people what the people cannot do better individually for themselves."

That "individually" is VERY important...Even the most conservative can agree that there ARE things in which the government can do better than individuals. (Defense anyone?)

So if we were to ask "What can the government do that individuals can't?", conservatives could come up with about three things and Obama and the Left would come up with abut three thousand...Because the Left sucks...

But that's not the issue...

The issue is whether or not Obama included individuals instead of making a general statement against them...And he DID include it...

Mark Knoller's tweet did not...False information...

Lincoln is clearly talking about what we, today, would call public or joint goods, which individual action simply cannot effectively provide due to problems such as free riders or very high costs of coordination.

There is simply no way to interpret that Lincoln quote to mean that govt should provide things individuals can provide for themselves, even if govt might in theory be a bit more efficient.

Captain Bullshit strikes (yet) again.  I remember back in the 2008 campaign, Ace said Obama got some of his stuff from the Department of Making Shit Up.  He still does, maybe now there's a czar for that??

132 “The legitimate object of government, is to do for a community of people, whatever they need to have done,..." Note that Lincoln said "need to have done". Stress on "need". But the way the current prez phrased it, he would have the government do nearly anything it wanted to be done. Regardless, Lincoln, I hope, would have limited the "needed" action to Constitutional action.

Well, most people probably can't fight a war, so Lincoln (if in fact he said it) was right about that.

And of course most people can't legally loot their neighbor. For example if I can't afford good health  care, I can't mug my neighbors to force them to pay for it. But government can! Lincoln would be SO proud of OBamaCare!

You have to remember the context here. Lincoln was, at the time of this message, a Whig. The Whig party was the party wanting internal improvements, in oppositon to the Democrats, who didn't. This has nothing to do with any right of big government to tell him how to split rails. Its his (and a lot of people on the frontier) desire to have a frickin' road built or a canal built so that they could sell their goods more than a mile from home.

I've got an Abe Lincoln quote for you

"I will say then that I am not, nor ever have been in favor of bringing about in anyway the social and political equality of the white and black races - that I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races living together on terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be the position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race. I say upon this occasion I do not perceive that because the white man is to have the superior position the negro should be denied everything."  ~ Abe Licoln

I guess that goes right along with Obamas "blacks are a mongrel race" quote.
