Obama Was Not Briefed on Nuclear-Defense Plans Until "Some Months" In Office
— Gabriel Malor

There's a certain thing I do where I know I've got mail that I should open sooner rather than later, but instead I throw it on a counter and pretend to forget about it because I don't want to deal with it. As long as I don't actually open them, I can ignore them. It's a bury-my-head-in-the-sand maneuver and it's dumb, because I know what's in most of those letters.

Apparently, the President does the same thing:

According to a knowledgeable source who would not be identified discussing sensitive national-security matters, President Obama wasn't briefed on the U.S. nuclear-strike plan against Russia and China until some months after he had taken office. "He thought it was insane," says the source. (The reason for the delay is unclear; the White House did not respond to repeated inquiries.)

Warning: the rest of that Newsweek article is partisan trash, including comparisons between Obama and President Reagan and more public knob gobbling than anyone should be comfortable with.

But those three lines jumped out at me because it seems pretty damned important that the President doesn't just bury his head in the sand when he gets uncomfortable. Republicans have been pointing out for a year just how neglectful Obama has been addressing national security concerns. After every major blunder Democrats try and reassure the public that it's not neglect, but rather subtlety.

It's neglect.

So he's got that going for him.

The comparisons contrasts with President Carter continue.

Upon taking office, Carter was briefed on emergency evacuation plans -- Oval Office to back lawn, Marine One to Air Force One. Carter said, Let's do it. Right now. Consider it a drill.

Jimmy Carter knew the importance of National Command Authority. He also knew what could happen.

(My source, by the way, is Executive Orders by Tom Clancy coupled with my admittedly faulty memory.)

What's Obama's solution to this?  From the Obama Limits When U.S. Would Use Nuclear Arms story that's been linked here several times..

For the first time, the United States is explicitly committing not to use nuclear weapons against nonnuclear states that are in compliance with the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, even if they attacked the United States with biological or chemical weapons or launched a crippling cyberattack.

Only a racist, red-neck tea-bagger would see a problem with this, right?

/In the end, there will be only chaos.

Clinton had a degree of likeability. I don't think that a strong move to impeach Obama would be as unpopular down thr road as one would assume, especially when the country realizes that he is preventing very unpopular bills that caused dozens of defeats in the House and up to 6 pickups in the Senate from being repealed.

In short, that he is holding a gun to our heads.

Speaking of unpopular things, check this out.

IRS could tap refunds for health insurance penalties.

People who do not comply would be levied penalties, and if they don't pay them the penalties could be taken out of their tax refunds...

Under the new law, the IRS cannot seize assets or levy fines, so Shulman said refunds were the most obvious option to collect penalties...

They've been doing something like that because they should have resigned back during the intentional dithering over troops to Afghanistan (at the very least - especially given that insane argument that "facts on the ground had changed in the time between requesting a strategic review and getting it" [paraphrased but exactly the insane White House argument]) and Petraeus jumped in whole hog to blame Israel's settlements for the violent aggression of the arabs and other muslims.

61 All the Morons should step back and remember how our original nuclear posture came into being.

After WWII we were (for a short time) the only nuclear power.  It was thought that we could maintain defense on the cheap by eliminating conventional forces and offsetting that with nuclear forces.

We went on a huge binge of decommissioning ships, standing down armies, and generally closing down conventional forces.

When we became a "conventional war pussy" we got Korea. We had a choice of nuking China or going with the stalemate in Korea. We had a Commie in office so we went with the stalemate.

We have sense then built back conventional capacity and then eliminated it again. Now Ogabe wants to get rid of the "cheap" nukes while we are once again "conventional pussies".

This can not end well and history has shown time and time again that every time we disarm and stand down a new set of dictators comes along to challenge us.

The big difference now is that the world is a lot smaller and we will not have months to gear up.

Here's that fig-leaf in the NYT story: But the president said in an interview that he was carving out an exception for “outliers like Iran and North Korea” that have violated or renounced the main treaty to halt nuclear proliferation.

But nations like Iran and the Norks wouldn't outsource such an attack to an untraceable terrorist organization....

I would think that being briefed on our national defense strategy in a time of war especially and on our nuclear strike options in particular would be, I don't know, one of the most important and priority things an incoming president should want to be briefed upon???!!!!

I was willing to give benefit of the doubt when I first heard this: no nuclear strikes against non-nuclear countries...why hello Iran, how you doin?  That could be a clever little yank the chain presser (of course, it should be necessity be a ruse, but perhaps a clever ruse).  Sadly, once again, cleverness appears to have nothing to do with it.

I'm beginning to think defense and foreign policy might be better off left in the hands of the joint chiefs, and this administration (including the SoS and the majority of Congress) needn't worry their pretty little heads over such big boys and girls' issues.  That is an excerable state of affairs for a democratic republic, but in this situation perhaps the best thing for the common good. (forgive me Lord, that I feel compelled to say such things)

87 The shelf life of a nuke isn't unlimited. The radiation does strange things to the materials its made out of.

My understanding is that the only thing that has to be periodically "refreshed" is the tritium. We supposedly have an endless supply of that.

The other stuff doesn't degrade too much.

88 unknown jane - "be better off left in the hands of the joint chiefs," in an actual strategic exchange, things are going to happen so fast the politicians are going to be useless. I bet a critical communication system fails on AF1, rendering it unable to reach Kneecap and the Generals just fight to win.

89 This ass also wants to "FREEZE" our nukes right where they are. No more improved and better nukes even thought the Chicoms and Ruskies are moving full bore ahead. That is the most dangerous part.

Well, we've already pretty much abandoned our missile defense shield as well, can't imagine it will be too long before that tech ends up in Chinese and Russian hands, assuming they don't have a good portion of it already.

It's worse than that, being wholly intentional.  This is the nuclear equivalent of his intentional dithering on troop levels in Afghanistan, which was done by the Traitor-in-Chief in order to weaken our position.  He only relented and gave the minimum number of troops possible when he absolutely had to.

In the 1980's, five nations officially had nuclear weapons, and according to the beautiful people, we were at the brink of war at any moment. Just remember that asinine war clock. TV shows, other movies and other bilge in the press repaeated this ad nauseum. Now at least two dictatorships and one democracy have or are striving for nuclear weapons. And our response? Le'ts worry about strategic weapons unassociated with any of that proliferation. India and Pakistan both have nukes, and have previously fought three wars with other. China and India have had, and are having right now, a border war. North Korea practices lobbing missiles over Japan.

155 The whole "retaliation" thing is part of their mental problem - you don't win a strategic war by surrendering the initiative. You need to be ready to strike first, that option has to be on the table. If it looks like a rabid bear, you don't wait for it to bite. That is the real problem with Obama not getting briefed; it means he wasn't keeping the big stick within arms reach. The beauty of SDI is it allows you to catch a few leakers after you hit them with a high hard one - which is why the Russians #1 are trying to get us to get rid of it, #2 are trying to build their own, and #3 have mobilized the international, intellectual left against it.

This isn't just about the US being hit (though it is mostly that with respect to the savages in the arab/persian/muslim world - funny how that works!) but the world unraveling.  Russia has other interests that it is being given the green light on, more every day.

America had better come to grips with what we truly did on Nov 4th, 2008, pretty soon, or there won't be much left to save.  And, on top of this, we have a monetary catastrophe barreling down the road right at us.  This preparation of chaos for that just makes it all the worse.

167 What exactly does Karzai want?

That's a simple one, he wants to stay in charge, or at the very least make sure he can walk away from this without having his head mounted on a pike at some point.  You see, Obama has already made it abundantly clear to the Taliban and pretty much all the other factions that the US will pull out come hell or high water and soon, leaving Karzai high and dry whether he's consolidated his provisional government is ready or not.

You see in another stunningly bad foreign policy decision, our President has already told the bad guys that it's only a matter of time before he surrenders.  All they have to do is wait it out, and pretty soon Karzai will be one big sitting duck.

So Karzai is trying to find some middle ground if he can, letting the Taliban know he's not their enemy without alienating the US too much in the process just in case.  All this Obama BS has pretty much put Karzai between a rock and a hard place, he's fairly well screwed either way and he knows it.

171 And Paul, like Obama, has such a transhuman intellect that he understands nuclear strategy intuitively, without any need for briefings on war plans.  So it's perfectly all right that the President ignored one of his primary responsibilities for several months.  Hyper-minds are beyond such petty human concerns.

Why, super-smart trial lawyer Paul was probably winning an exciting court case with a hot babe defendant and a mean old conservative prosecutor, at the very same moment he created his timeless classic joke about Reagan having Alzheimer's.  Ordinary brains like ours can't do that.

172 What's great is that my town's weekly siren test started up as I was reading this article. But after the Cubbies dismal start yesterday maybe a nuke isn't so bad. If you put yourself in the shoes of some Chinese or Russian potentate in some war room planning their world domination schemes you no longer have to worry that the US will counter-launch their nuclear stockpile. Obama will deliberate in his professorial indecisiveness in the key window of mere seconds we have to retaliate. And you truly have to wonder if Obama would retaliate since the man so clearly hates America. He'd probably be happy if every American citizen was dead, just like those Chinese and Russian potentates.

Hey dumbass, here is why nuclear deterents work. They work because it prevents your enemies from attacking you because they are afraid they will get nuked. When you announce you won't nuke your enemies it increases your chances of being attacked and eventually haveing to use the damn things to save your country after it was attacked.

Obama just increased the threat of nuclear war, not decreased it.

"Dither" is actually kind. "Fuck up" sounds so hostile and crude. "Wavering, vacillating and hesitating" are all words that would connote that he was choosing between decisions. He wasn't. He was "dithering" around, attempting to figure out how he could not enrage the far left while at the same time not provide the right with campaign fodder. It's an excellent description of his lack of seriousness about Afghanistan when he would rather have been jamming socialism down the throats of America to level the world wide economy.

In Europe and America, there's a growing feeling of hysteria
Conditioned to respond to all the threats
In the rhetorical speeches of the Soviets

It would be such an ignorant thing to do
If the Russians love their children too

How can I save my little boy from Oppenheimer's deadly toy
There is no monopoly in common sense
On either side of the political fence
We share the same biology
Regardless of ideology
Believe me when I say to you
I hope the Russians love their children too

There is no historical precedent
To put the words in the mouth of the President
There's no such thing as a winnable war
It's a lie that we don't believe anymore
Mr. Reagan says we will protect you
I don't subscribe to this point of view
Believe me when I say to you
I hope the Russians love their children too

We share the same biology
Regardless of ideology
What might save us, me, and you
Is if the Russians love their children too

209 Obama hates America and Americans. Far too many of them, from his perspective, are White. So of course Obama won't retaliate. He WANTS AMERICA TO BE HIT. So he can suspend elections, rule by decree, be Fidel Castro, his big hero. Or Chavez. Obama ruling forever, fulfilling what he sees as his destiny -- punishing America and Whites for "racism." Obama would view 20 million (mostly White) Americans dead as "a good start." That's Obama. Heck, that sort of view is pretty popular among most Blacks. Look at Farrakhan -- out of a population of only 12.5% of Americans, 60% of that below the federal poverty line, he's got a bigger mansion than Oprah, and likely more money. He's also Obama's neighbor.

Yep.  Getting that idea across was exactly the motivation behind the intentional dithering on troop deployments - just to let them all know that the US was wavering and could not be counted on for much of anything.

Exactly, and the moment he did so he pretty much lost the entire Afghanistan war rigtht there.  Karzai doesn't trust us as far as he can throw us, and quite frankly I can't blame him.  Here's the asshat Obama lecturing Karzai on corruption after all the back alley deals, arm twisting and bribes he used to get his health care takeover passed?  Please.

Nope Karzai knows he can't count on US support at all now, and he's trying desperately to position himself for a US pullout.  If that means handing the keys to the country over to the Taliban and company so be it, he'll do it in a heartbeat to save his own skin.

There isn't any other Afghan who's dumb enough to think that if he becomes the US puppet leader he'll live for much longer than a year, since that's pretty much as long as most of them figure it will take Obama to completely loose all intestinal fortitude and run from this fight like the little bitch that he is, it's not like Obama hasn't made it abundantly clear what his intentions are whenever some reporter asks him about it.

So no, we have no real Afghan support any more and haven't since Obama pulled that stunt.  They'll go through the motions for now but I'd be willing to bet dollars to doughnuts the vast majority of them, government administrators and Afghan troops alike, are cutting side deals with the Taliban even as we speak.  And considering how tenuous our situation was there to begin with, I think it's safe to say that Obama has already surrendered Afghanistan to our enemies.

The current Afghan administration has his number I think, they know that Obama will put up a couple of big show "offensives" so he can take credit for a "troop surge" strategy and make himself look all Presidential, then he'll claim victory and order a pull out.

Once the US pulls out Obama will not let them come back under any circumstances, and the Afghan's know this all to well.  They'll get no financial or military support or backing from the US at all, or at least not nearly enough to make any real difference to their situation.  The afghans realize that this isn't a war to the US anymore, it's a Presidential photo op.  Sad, but true.

All Barry cares about is Barry.   He spouts whatever he thinks people want to hear, but in the end the only thing that matters to Barry is Barry.  If there is even a democrat out there dumb enough to believe otherwise just wait till November and see how much damage your anointed one has done to your party.

To remove such an option from the table, or to state publicly exactly how and under what circumstances you'd be willing to use such a deterrent, that's insane.

I hear a lot of the peaceniks always going on and on about how we need to get rid of all nuclear weapons.  I say no, we don't.  We do need to keep them out of the hands of nut jobs, this is a given.

But the since the advent of the nuclear bomb we haven't had a major global conflict since.  We've had some minor skirmishes here and there (when placed in a historical perspective of course, no war is "minor" to those that fight in it), but a major all out world war hasn't occurred because it's too damn dangerous for either side to start one.  Before that we were fighting a major global conflict pretty much like clockwork every 40-60 years or so throughout the entire recorded history of mankind.

237 President Obama wasn't briefed on the U.S. nuclear-strike plan against Russia and China until some months after he had taken office. "He thought it was insane,"

That's obvious, given that Obama refuses to use nuclear strikes no matter. No matter what the plans were, Obama would not facilitate their execution. That illustrates the insanity is within Obama himself for refusing to defend our nation, no matter.

What a pathetic beggar for affection from his heroes in China, Russia, Islam and Venezuela. "PLEASE LIKE ME! I'll let you kill my nation so long as you like me. There'll be all the more plunder and power for the rest of us once these damned bitter Constitution lovers are gone." That's what Michelle's kids would get from it all, MORE.

240 Reagan was a real American and believed in the American way.  Reagan was always mindful not to spend taxpayer money for his own personal benefit. This moron hates everything America stands for.  He only likes the private plane, his endless photo ops, the parties, parties, parties, where he serves the $100/# beef, and thinks we all want him spoiling the baseball games and basketball games, he has expensive date nights, all on the taxpayer dime.  Bush didn't have the endless cocktail parties because he said no business gets done at a cocktail party.  Of course he didn't have the drinking problem of BO.  I suppose we should give the girly guy a break, he's never had a real job before he doesn't know what to do.

@24: "Or should we just sit around and die while Obama and his Pretorian Guard huddle together in a safe haven?"

Give that cracka jooo a kewpie doll!  Small one only, though.  The actual correct answer is that you should sing hymns, praises, and hosannahs to My Majesty as your insignificant ass dies.  Merely sitting around and not actively worshipping Me is borderline treason, peasant. My Glory will live on in comfort; and really, that is the only thing that matters.
